Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    August 26, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 rolls in Race 5 and has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6 (9:00 PM EST)

2-Hunters Hero (9/5)-Drew off by 4 lengths versus easier, now steps up and shouldn’t be out of place here. Has won 3 of 13 at Yonkers. Does best when racing near the top of the stack and that should be the case tonight.

    Race 7 (9:20 PM EST)

3-Thunder Hunter Joe (2-1)-Rolled the back half in 55.1 to win and takes a good step up. Keep in mind, did win 6 of 12 last year and banked over $317K. So, will respect chances versus this group in a competitive affair.
5-Mamba (8-1)-Looking for a price and this 4-year-old was pace compromised in last. Can stalk and rally down the lane here and they should go to the half faster than 57.1.
7-It’s a Me Mario (6-1)-Jason Bartlett sticks with Shane Tritton and picks off of Thunder Hunter Joe. Can’t see a way for this one to win unless the pedal is down off the gate. My guess is an aggressive drive is coming and should offer a square price.

    Race 8 (9:40 PM EST)

3-None Bettor A (5/2)-Has gotten on the point versus better but faded each time. Takes a significant drop-in class and George Brennan might be able to ration the speed better this time.
4-Wattsup Sunshine (5-1)-Connected for a dead heat win in last off a sharp effort. Comes back at the same condition and that’s a benefit that could lead to the Aussie invader being able to double up.

    Race 9 (10:00 PM EST)

4-Mirage Hanover (5-1)-Stratton chooses off Venturesome Arden N who has won 2 straight and is now steering this very fast 3 yr old. This is a fresh horse who should offer a square price. Willing to take a swing the Jake Leamon pupil is up to the challenge.
6-Racing Rampage (3-1)-This 4-year-old has been so good week in and week out. Matt Kakaley will be out and rolling, should land on the point or in a close-up seat and will be one to beat again.
8-Energetic Hanover (6-1)-Has been off for a little over a month and tuned up with a nice qualifier on 8-14 winning by 7 lengths in 152.3. Has won 7 of 19 this year and will look for the Tony Alagna entry to fire hot off the bench. The post is an issue but has won from an outside post before and the 8-hole draw will help the price.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    2/3,5,7/3,4/4,6,8
    Total Bet=$18

      #3
      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#8 That Thing You Do Firster goes for a team that has this one working pretty regularly for the debut, and she draws well to try to keep tabs on the inside pace players early on. Some appeal -- take a look at her on the tote and track.
#1 Hazard Pay She just hasn't been able to stay in the final yards of her first three starts against special weight groups, but she has some upside here while flashing that pace from the fence against this cheaper claiming group. Could run them off their feet.
#3 Boujie Betz She faded badly after setting the tempo against a small special-weight group in the debut run, and it wouldn't be a shock to see her stick around a bit better today with that race under her belt.
Race Summary That Thing You Do is a fresh face for an interesting team, and she's making her first appearance in what feels like a really logical spot that isn't too deep.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#9 Michaelshatrick He has been a little one-paced in a few flat tries so far, but those all came going short against special weight groups, and the drop and more leisurely route tempo might allow him to get in the mix a little bit more today. Some appeal at a midrange price.
#7 Strategyforyou He was a good fit behind an easy winner when getting into this level for the first time, and something similar probably keeps him in the mix with these. Still worry that he'll have just enough company near the top to soften him up.
#1 Uncle Caesar Dropper has been in much tougher spots so far, and he'll get blinkers while trying a claiming group for the first time. Nothing to write home about on form yet, but he's an obvious threat for a capable team.
Race Summary Michaelshatrick could stay in the frame with these if he's able to transfer something like the two-back run to this cheaper route trip. Worth a look while stretching out.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#7 Rozay Summer Nothing I want more in this spot than a plug-along closer -- she has been solid in her two starts over the local footing and should get a a great setup to wait and launch one steady run late to land it.
#6 Candy Reward I think there is a little quality to her, and she might be able to take her solid recent score here and move it around two turns. The big worry is that the race flow doesn't seem to flatter forward players, and I'm worried she could get caught up with the other ones early.
#8 Vinos Angel She rises while in really good form after cruising home against a couple cheaper groups, and she might get the right kind of trip while settled just in behind the quicker pace players. In the mix.
Race Summary Rozay Summer moved nicely into the pace last out before flattening a bit, but I think a patient ride today could make her really dangerous to scoop up a handful of pretty committed forward players.

        #4
        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #1
#8 BARCA BILLY (3-1) Back with own kind, one to beat on best, distance the question.
#1 BACHMAN (8-1) Switches back to conventional dirt, can rally for share at a price.
#6 MIDNITESTATEOFMIND (9-5) Won the duel but lost the war to trip-sitting winner last out.
Race Summary BARCA BILLY tested Maiden Special Weight company to no avail after a pair of runner-up finishes sprinting at this level. He stalked the pace 5-wide in one of them and was out-kicked by the 1-to-2 favorite in the other. Bet to win and place and play a 1,8/1,6,8/ALL trifecta.
        Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #2
#1 CHARBONNAY (5-2) Tested stakes company out of town after maiden romp here.
#7 SWEET MO B (3-1) Stablemate of top one has good speed and good post to use it from.
#2 STURGEON MOON (6-1) Debut win at 1-to-5, jockey stays here after riding Charbonnay.
Race Summary Trainer John Ennis sends out a formidable 1-2 punch in this 6F allowance, but they are uncoupled in the wagering. CHARBONNAY, an easy maiden breaker at one mile two starts back, chased a fast pace to the stretch in the Ellis Park Juvenile. The top two finishers were 3-to-5 and 3-to-2 coming off wins at Churchill Downs. SWEET MO B broke his maiden at Churchill Downs at 4-1/2F, faded in the lane in a useful 6F allowance at Ellis Park and can use his speed to full advantage from a favorable outside post. Bet on CHARBONNAY to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-7 exactas.
        Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #5
#3 SHE’S MAGIC (3-1) Went well for new barn, gets Burgos to ride, move forward makes her tough.
#6 TOUGH AS NAILS (15-1) Led at stretch call twice at 1M, edged away in slow paced route at Belterra.
#2 FROSTED VICTORY (8-5) Broke maiden in debut at distance, overmatched in allowance company.
Race Summary SHE’S MAGIC equaled her top speed figure – both at one mile on the turf – but failed to sustain her stretch bid and finished third. She could upgrade to a victory in her second start after a 10-week layoff for high-percentage connections. Bet to win and place and play 3-2, 3-6 and 6-3 exactas.

              # 3 HITCHPIN 5/1
BACHMAN is the strongest bet in this race and could score at a price in here. Don't overlook this gelding in your bets - very dangerous with Villarreal aboard. He looks very good in this spot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. Must be given a shot based on the solid Equibase Speed Figure put up in the last contest. MIDNITESTATEOFMIND - Overall the speed figs of this animal look formidable in this race. Lately Bermudez has been on fire which may give the edge to this gelding. HITCHPIN - Could provide positive dividends based on very good recent speed figures with an average of 51.

My choice in here is BREEZIN BRIANNE. Is worth a look and may be a bet - strong Speed Figures (64 average) at today's distance and surface recently. Her 65 average has this filly with among the best Equibase Speed Figs in this contest. Snow has her trained solidly to break rapidly out of the gate. WHY NOTS A WYNNER - Has been racing in the most competitive company of the field lately. ANSTRUTHER - This racer ought to be bet on at the expected high odds. Should compete quite well in the pace contest which bodes well with this group.

                  #6 HECTOR (ML=7/5)
                  #7 SHY DA RUNNER (ML=7/2)

LOOKIN TO EXCEL - My handicapping 'sense' tells me to watch out for this entrant in this event HECTOR - I like a thoroughbred that manages to hit the board as often as this gelding. Almost always in the money so don't leave him out of your exotic bets. This gelding is in fine form. Finished first on Aug 13th. Earnings per start (EPS) is something that I think can be a very important factor. This horse is ranked at the very top in this field. SHY DA RUNNER - Jock hops up aboard after getting to know the fine animal by riding in the last race. That's always a good to see. When Girten gives Morales a leg up on any thoroughbred, you have to feel that with their win percent you have decidedly more than a fighting chance. I have to like this gelding's chances of winning at the shorter trip.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #5 MISTER B (ML=4/1), #3 KNIGHT LEGEND (ML=9/2),

MISTER B - The speed figure last out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this horse as a possibly overvalued equine. KNIGHT LEGEND - Placed much too far in the rear on October 5th for me to bet on at the probable odds in today's sprint event. Tough to support any less than sharp equine in a sprint affair if he hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last couple months. The long vacation will probably be too much to overcome for this horse.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #4 LOOKIN TO EXCEL to win if we can get at least 4/1 odds

CAJUN MISCHIEF - Likes to go to the lead and the fact that today is a shorter distance should be advantageous. This gelding is in fine form, having run a good race on August 7th, finishing third. Gelding was a beaten favorite in a $12,500 Maiden Claiming race last time out. Was a good performance even though he finished third. Garnered a nice turf fig on August 7th at Louisiana Downs. A repeat in this race, and this one has a great shot to win. This gelding's last speed figure notched on Aug 7th is number one in last race speed ratings. NATIVE REQUITE - Don't often see a profitable ROI like +31. This rider/conditioner tandem has done well together over the last twelve months. Just see his recent fig, 61. That one fits in this group. This horse is for real on the grass. TrackMaster turf figure in last race at Louisiana Downs was tops in this bunch. BLUME - Always be careful of the longer priced horse when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 PRINCE PERFECTA (ML=7/2), #11 MY STORY (ML=5/1), #6 PICASSO BABY (ML=8/1),

PRINCE PERFECTA - You always think this horse has a shot to win, but he just misses often. Hasn't been on the Louisiana Downs oval in the last three weeks. Cause for some concern. This mount's record tells you not to bet on him as the chalk. MY STORY - In the last race this pony finished seventh. Doesn't bode well for his chances this time around. Don't believe this questionable contender will make a winning move in today's race. That last speed rating was run-of-the-mill when compared with today's Equibase class figure. PICASSO BABY - Don't think this racer is worth 8/1 in this race.

If you want a good play for this one, feast your eyes on PEMBERTON. The brain trust knows that speed is King in harness racing. This standardbred will unlock our way to a nice victory. Has a formidable shot in this one, if he can perform to his back class. The brain trust noted a very compelling showing out of this fine animal last time. Hoping for a duplicate of that to take the whole enchilada. PRETENDER - His 95 avg has this horse among the finest speed ratings for this race. Has a substantial shot in this one, if he can perform to his back class. DISTANCE LEARNING - This entrant and Nixon have some sort of connection going. In the money clip for this tandem is high.

SADDLE UP is the clear stand out wager in the eyes of the panel of smart guys. Worth serious consideration here given the markings in the TrackMaster speed fig department alone. Unquestionably the class of the pack with an average rating of 91. A nice pick. This trainer, and the driver Bartlett, go together like salt and pepper. Their results together are top notch. GENTLE GIANT - Had one of the most competitive TrackMaster speed figs of the race in his last race. I'd recommend using in your plays. When the trainer Adamczyk puts Siegelman up for the drive really good things happen. Just check out the 19 win percent. UCANTTOUCHTHIS - Take a long look at making this horse your win bet based on excellent win percentage alone. The 4 position sports a much better than average win percentage at Yonkers Raceway.
