Race of the Week: Saratoga's Jockey Club Gold Cup | Sunday

The Lead:
Saratoga's 2024 summer hits the homestretch this weekend with closing-day Monday, but not before Breeders' Cup Classic division rivals clash in Sunday's Jockey Club Gold Cup. The longtime Belmont Park fall fixture has made its home at the Spa since 2021. At a mile and one-quarter, it stretches Grade 1 Whitney alumni an additional 220 yards from Saratoga's other premier race in the division.

Horsesplayers at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet can take part Saturday in a Bet $100, Get $25 promotion. Bet $100 or more at both Saratoga and Del Mar this Saturday (on Pacific Classic Day, no less) in order to collect the $25 wagering credit.

Field Depth:
Grade 1 winners here include ARTHUR'S RIDE, TAPIT TRICE and defending champion BRIGHT FUTURE. Graded stakes winners DISARM, PYRENEES and HIGHLAND FALLS have been competitive at the highest levels. This field is very evenly matched in terms of class.

Pace:
ARTHUR'S RIDE dominated the Whitney on the front end and potentially could be lone speed over this longer trip. BRIGHT FUTURE hasn't had any speed this year, but his best races are tracking the lead and adds blinkers. DISARM and PYRENEES have the ability to sit fairly close in the right scenarios. Give an edge to those near the front in the JCGC.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-TAPIT TRICE: Superb return from 11 months on the sidelines to win the Monmouth Cup. Last year's Travers third-place finisher should handle the track and has had an aggressive 4 workouts since that race 43 days ago, indicating there's no bounce pending. Picks up 8 pounds and doesn't get a favorable pace set-up, but I'm counting on him to deliver what he has in the tank for a Todd Pletcher barn that has won this race twice in the last 4 years.

#2-KUCHAR: Longshot entrant was beaten 10 lengths in the Monmouth Cup by return rival Tapit Trice and now faces an even tougher and deeper cast. Off the board in all 3 Saratoga starts, there's not much to embrace or to forecast a massive rebound.

#3-BRIGHT FUTURE: Seeks back-to-back Jockey Club Gold Cup victories, but a 22-length defeat in the Whitney behind several of these paints a less promising picture. Blinkers go on this 5-year-old for the first time, who has made but 10 starts lifetime (winning 5). Expect Javier Castellano to keep him in the early mix as best he can if the horse has any interest in running Sunday vs. the Whitney no-show. Preference here of the Pletcher trainees goes to Tapit Trice.

#4-DISARM: Gun Runner 4-year-old just hasn't lived up to the promise yet, teasing a year ago that he'd be among the very best of the Classic division in 2024. That hasn't materialized after a modest allowance win was followed by out-of-the-money tries in the Grade 1 Foster and Grade 1 Whitney. He'll pick up 8 pounds and be tasked with making up nearly 7 lengths on Arthur's Ride from their last local head-to-head. You'll know a half-mile in if he's coming to work; if he's not up into the pace, he's unlikely to fire his best.

#5-PYRENEES: Hot hand saw a 4-race winning streak snapped when a solid second in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster last time at Churchill. Third-place finisher Skippylongstocking recently won the Charles Town Classic in repeat fashion, while Foster winner Kingsbarns has been retired. While he's never run 10F, he was only 110 yards shy in the Pimlico Special while finishing well. He stacks up with most in here and capable of a share.

#6-HIGHLAND FALLS: Well-traveled Brad Cox trainee has contested the Santa Anita Handicap, Oaklawn Handicap, Blame and Monmouth Cup literally from sea to sea with Arkansas and Kentucky in-between in his last 4. He's shown up in all 4, even if only 1 victory to boast for it. Rider change to Flavien Prat can't be underestimated as he's been an absolute stakes phenom this summer at the Spa. Pedigree screams 10F.

#7-ARTHUR'S RIDE: Cruised to victory in 4 of his last 5, all in front-end fashion, and clearly the one to catch in search of a Whitney-JCGC sweep at the meet. Win here could make him favored for the Breeders' Cup Classic and certainly in the driver's seat for an Eclipse Award in the older dirt male division. Pace-wise there should be no excuses. He's won locally in allowance company over 10F in a razor-sharp 2:00-4/5, and it's hard to see any of these running anywhere close to that fast. He'll have to regress to lose this, even if picking up 8 pounds.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
ARTHUR'S RIDE is 6-7 in the exacta lifetime and has a win over the track and distance, plus gets a pace edge.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
PYRENEES has been 5-1 and 10-1 in his last pair and figures to be no better than fourth choice here among 7.

Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
The ARTHUR'S RIDE-TAPIT TRICE exacta will be short and the most likely combination, but there could be value in splitting them with a pair of respected chances. $50 exacta part-wheel ARTHUR'S RIDE over PYRENEES and HIGHLAND FALLS.

Al Cimaglia: The Red Mile Early Pick 4 Analysis

The Red Mile has a 17-race card set to go featuring Kentucky bred two-year-olds. The $1.00 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $7,500 guaranteed pool with a low 12% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6 (6:40 PM EST)

1-Go Dog Go (5/2)-Hasn't missed the board when not breaking stride and in 3 races has recorded 1 win. Raced well in last but was handled conservatively after breaking in the previous race. Should get a cozy trip and Todd McCarthy could provide a more aggressive drive after putting in a flat line.
5-Chat Room (6/5)-This is handy freshman trotter who has good gate speed and can win racing at the top of the stack or coming off cover. Looks like a main player at a small price.
6-Landing On Time (7-1)-The Linda Toscano pupil has good tactical speed and should land near the leaders when the wings fold. Could surprise at a solid price if minds its manners.

Race 7 (6:59 PM EST

2-Pantsuit (9/5)-Missed by a nose in last after getting on the engine and setting quick fractions only to get caught at the wire to lose by a nose. That race went in a quick 153.1 and was off 15-days before the start. Should take control early on and this time Dexter Dunn will probably rate the mile differently, also comes back in sequence.

Race 8 (7:18 PM EST)

5-Lancelot (9/2)-Broke stride in its debut at 3/5 and finished a distant 4th. Yannick Gingras sticks with the Nancy Taker trainee and is worth another look. Willing to take a swing for a rebound and the Bar Hopping colt will be a much better price this time.
7-Wellsze J (2-1)-Raced in the slop in its Lex debut and then broke stride in the next start. Has had excuses and its last race on 8-18 was better, getting on the point and losing by a neck. Missed a start before the last outing and comes back in sequence this time. Loses Gingras but Andy MacCarthy can get the job done.
8-Ready Freddie (9/2)-Team Miller pupil has the earmarks of handy freshman. Raced on the point and came a close 2nd after breaking stride in its debut. Then rallied off cover and rolled by at a square price. Should offer a solid price with this post draw and will string along.

Race 9 (7:37 PM EST)

1-Amazon Princess (5-1)-Princess has troubling finishing off miles. So, this is a spot to shine because she fits with others and could get a suck-around trip. Could offer some value, and if Terry Skinner saves ground, she could roll by down the lane.
4-Reddington (7/2)-The connections on this $80,000 yearling purchase are looking for some relief. Has banked only $2,376 in 12 starts but could cash the top check versus this crew. Marvin Luna can provide a good steer and hopefully won't be bet down.
7-PD's Gabriel (7/5)-Posted 1 win in 5 races at Lex this year and has never missed cashing a check. That makes her the 7/5 morning line chalk and will probably be driven like it. That's cause for pause, but hopefully Devon Tharps pushes the button at the right time and works a smooth journey.

Del Mar - Race #4

#3 Forty Niner Gold	He's probably got a little company from some of the other pace drawn outside of him, but he has some dangerous pace at this sharper trip than he has ever tried. Might be an OK midrange price.
#4 Lemon Sushi	He has a little ability to press the pace that might serve him well to sit just off the top choice and try to get first jump. Wouldn't be shocked to see him find the wire at the right time ahead of the finishing threats.
#5 Galland De Besos	He rallied well enough to get in the picture late last out without being a real threat, and he would benefit if all the pace went on send missions early on -- opposite success profile from the top choice.
Race Summary	Forty Niner Gold is a bit of a question mark late, but he has some dangerous pace and might be able to see out this shorter trip -- I think his baseline keeps him in the mix.

Del Mar - Race #7

#4 Pony Express	He probably has his hands full with the guy drawn just inside of him, but I wonder if he can prove the quickest of the pace and control the tempo enough to keep the chalk at bay.
#3 Muth	Obvious one to beat with a couple Grade I wins on his page, but part of me has a mild worry about the fact that he's coming back in a relatively modest spot for a multiple Grade I winner. Could roll.
#2 Indispensible	Took him a long time to graduate, but I wonder if he might be able to clunk past some of these late for a share on the rise. He's catching a really deep group for a listed spot, so I'd be a little surprised to see him grab more than a piece.
Race Summary	Pony Express should get a little jump on Muth, and I'm hoping that guy is just a touch below his very best today based on the comeback placement. 'Express was up the track last out, but that was behind Travers winner Fierceness.

Del Mar - Race #8

#6 Formidable Man	He showed a sharp new element last out when rallying from way off the pace to score in a race that was not friendly to forward players on paper. He should be in a much more tactical spot today in a race without a ton of speed, and his typical effort should be enough to land a modest renewal of this race.
#4 Stay Hot	He has done some decent work here, but he has found graded company a little tough on occasion, and I think the top choice should be able to handle him. Logical alternative if you're against the pick.
#2 Gold Foot	Forward player is a little cheap overall on paper, but he should be in a really good spot near the front based on the expected race shape and could stay for a piece.
Race Summary	Formidable Man should be a handful here at a short kind of price, as he has a class edge in a soft Grade II and should get a perfect trip to take over whenever asked.

FAST GISELLE - The Jun 13th affair at Santa Anita was at a class level of (97). Dropping down the ladder based on class a significant amount, so she should be in a good position. You have to like that most recent race speed fig, 94, which is the best latest race speed fig of this field. This mare gets a weight break of -5 lbs from last race. Its possible this could make the difference right here. Three consecutive improved speed ratings (88-91-94) make this one a solid contender. LADY ZETA - This mare is rounding her way back into shape. Should perform well today. Coming off a sixth place finish at Colonial Downs, some may skip this horse. I'm not. She just missed hitting the show spot, and has pretty good morning odds today. FANCY AZTECA - Lopez's agent must relish anytime Dutrow gives them a mount; win pct together is good. She must like the track here. Shipped in to take the money on Jul 20th and she looks tough once again.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 PACIFIC ROSE (ML=7/2), #7 FLOGE (ML=9/2), #3 VICOUNTESS (ML=6/1),

PACIFIC ROSE - 7/2 is not offering enough value for any entrant in a sprint of 6 furlongs that hasn't finished in the money in a short distance contest lately. In the last affair this entrant finished fourth. Doesn't look promising for her chances today. This questionable contender ran a substandard fig in the last race. She shouldn't run much better and will likely get beat in today's race running that fig. FLOGE - Any horse coming out of a route race should show some early speed to tangle with the sprinters. Notched a run-of-the-mill speed fig last time out in a $75,000 Optional Claiming race on August 11th. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that fig. VICOUNTESS - Be a little shy about this 3 year old versus the veterans. Will do better with more experience. Not easy to back any mount in a short distance clash if she hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last sixty days.

SEVEN WONDERS is my choice. He has been travelling quite well as of late while recording very strong Speed Figures. Could beat this group given the 104 Equibase Speed Figure put up in his last outing. Has earned solid speed figures in turf route races in the past. EXPLAIN THIS AUDIT - He has been running admirably and the Equibase speed figs are among the top in this field. Has been constatntly running well recently. RIMPROTECTOR - Could wake up with Lasix change (with second time Lasix) today. Has to be carefully examined - I like the figures from the last contest.

Has garnered strong Equibase Speed Figures in turf sprint races in the past. BRAZILIAN SEA - Have to suppose this one will do well following the quick turnaround. ONE TRUTH - He looks formidable in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint. Is a key contender - given the 65 speed rating from his most recent race.

BOURBON CALLING - Great chance for this pony. Solid late speed and should have good position. Dropping in class figure points from his Jul 26th race at Saratoga. Based on that data, I will give this horse the advantage. NOLO CONTESTO - Trainer Abreu moves this horse down the ladder based on class to face a weaker level today. Look for a solid race this time out. Just missed hitting the board on August 15th at Saratoga. With decent morning line odds in this race, he has my interest. MARKET ALERT - Dropped down in class last time around the track, and keeps in that lower class in this event. A good sign this equine is comfortable and ready to go. Is ranked at the top in earnings per race. A powerful try in today's race can increase the lifetime earnings.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 CHARLIE FIVE O (ML=5/1), #5 CRITICAL THREAT (ML=6/1), #13 GANGLY (ML=6/1),

CHARLIE FIVE O - In any contest of 7 furlongs, I like to play a contender that has been on the board in short distance affairs recently. 5/1 is too short of a value to take on most any mount that has run poorly in back to back races. CRITICAL THREAT - The third place finish in the last race was not the best. Common speed fig last race out at Saratoga at 6 furlongs. Don't feel this entrant will improve too much in today's event. GANGLY - Didn't look like a winner last time. Probably won't make a winning move today. The speed rating last time out doesn't fit very well in this clash when I look at the class figure of today's event. Mark this horse as a likely underpriced equine.

1^st race [Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (8) Hurricane Nelson ran twice at Saratoga this summer with a pair of seconds after setting the pace. (4) Cuando has five top three finishes on turf and dirt. Three weeks ago he was on the lead and finished second. (7) Duration will make his debut for Chad Brown and Klaravich Stables. (2) Montalcino was an expensive 2-year-old purchase that ships up from Keeneland for his debut.
6^th race [Md 40000, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (11) Adventurous Spirit returns from a June layoff with four good starts in the past two years for Todd Pletcher. (9) Get It to Matthew has shown early speed and now is listed as a gelding. (4) El Alacran has also shown early speed and has some back class to rely on. (1) Guile was claimed from a third-place finish three weeks ago.
7^th race [Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (7) Endless Vow (B) was second in her debut well clear of the rest if the field despite the jockey losing his crop and now she gets blinkers on. Wayne Lukas second-time starter finishing second. (3) Snowyte has fast works showing in preparation for her first race as one that was mentioned as a talented 2-year-old.
12^th race [Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), 1 ? mi] – (1) Tapit Trice won the Blue Grass (G1) last year, was third in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and the Travers, and had an impressive 2024 debut winning the Monmouth Cup (G3) by more than five lengths. (7) Arthur’s Ride romped with front-end efforts in his last two starts including the Whitney (G1) which was run on a slopped and sealed track. (6) Highland Falls was second behind Tapit Trice in the Monmouth and won the Blame (G3) before that for Brad Cox. (5) Pyrennes was last seen in June running second in the Stephen Foster (G1). He won the Pimlico Special (G3) which was his fourth win in a row at the time.
