Jim Feist's FREE Pick, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2024

    9/28 12:00 PM PT / 3:00 PM ET

CFL (783) OTTAWA REDBLACKS VS (784) SASKATCHEWAN

    Take: (784) SASKATCHEWAN

Reason: The matchup between the Ottawa Redblacks (8-5) and the Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-7) on Saturday, September 28, 2024, has Ottawa looking for their first playoff berth since 2018, but they face a tough challenge on the road against a resurgent Roughriders team. The Redblacks have been inconsistent lately, losing three of their last four games. Injuries have been a significant issue, particularly on defense, where key players like linebackers Adarius Pickett and Jovan Santos-Knox are sidelined. Offensively, Jeremiah Masoli has stepped in for the injured Dru Brown at quarterback, but despite solid performances, the team has struggled to find offensive consistency. Ottawa's defense has been vulnerable, particularly on the road, allowing an average of 35 points per game. They have also been turnover-prone, giving the ball away eight times in their last two outings. The Roughriders recently snapped a seven-game winless streak with a 37-29 victory over the Calgary Stampeders. Trevor Harris, back from injury, has been in excellent form, throwing for 903 yards over his last three games. Running back Ryquell Armstead made a huge impact in his debut, rushing for 207 yards. Defensively, Saskatchewan has been opportunistic, leading the league with 35 takeaways. Their defense could capitalize on Ottawa's turnover issues, giving them a strong chance to cover the spread at home. Saskatchewan, buoyed by their recent form and home-field advantage, Should cover this spread here on Saturday. Your free play is on Saskatchewan.

CFL (785) MONTREAL VS (786) TORONTO

                    Take: (785) MONTREAL

Reason: The upcoming CFL showdown between the Montreal Alouettes (11-2-1) and the Toronto Argonauts (7-7) on Saturday, September 28, 2024, promises to be an intense battle. Montreal is vying to clinch first place in the East, while Toronto seeks to solidify their playoff position. The Alouettes have been one of the top teams this season, with a potent passing game led by quarterback Cody Fajardo. Their defense has also been formidable, ranking second in the league in points allowed (21.4 per game) and excelling at limiting big passing plays. Montreal is undefeated on the road this season (6-0-1), and they boast a well-rounded offense that averages 26.8 points per game. The Argonauts, led by quarterback Chad Kelly, have been more inconsistent. Despite Kelly leading the league in passing yards per game, Toronto's defense has struggled, particularly against the pass, allowing the second-most passing yards in the league. Offensively, they can put up points, but their defense has been a liability, giving up big plays and 295.5 passing yards per game. With Montreal having a balanced attack and strong defense I like them here today. Take Montreal.

                              Jack Jones

Jack's Free Pick Saturday: Northern Illinois +7 -110

I like the spot for Northern Illinois. They suffered a huge letdown last week coming out of their bye and losing outright to Buffalo as as 13-point favorites. That was predictable considering they were coming off their 16-14 upset win at Notre Dame as 28-point dogs, plus they had this game with NC State on deck. It was a classic sandwich spot.

Now humbled, the Huskies should bounce back with a big performance against NC State this week with this opportunity to play another Power 4 opponent. Plus, they had no business losing to Buffalo when you dig into the box score.

The Huskies outgained the Bulls 359 to 184, or by 173 total yards. They held the Bulls to just 9 first downs while registering 24 first downs themselves. This defense held Notre Dame to 14 points, and they'll shut down this suspect NC State offense as well.

The Wolfpack continue to get too much respect from the books and have from the jump. They are 0-4 ATS this season. They only beat Western Carolina 38-21 as 32.5-point favorites in their opener. They were blown out 51-10 by Tennessee as 8-point dogs. They were life and death with a bad Louisiana Tech team in a 30-20 home win as 20.5-point favorites. And last week they lost 59-35 to Clemson as 17.5-point dogs.

Keep in mind Clemson was up 59-14 before calling off the dogs in the 4th quarter. The Wolfpack outscored them 21-0 in garbage time to make that score look closer than it was. They trailed LA Tech 17-6 at halftime and were tied going into the 4th quarter. That's a LA Tech team that only beat Nicholls State 25-17 at home and lost outright to a bad Tulsa team 23-20 as 3-point home favorites in their other two games.

Now that we are getting the full +7 on Northern Illinois at a couple books in Circa and DK, it's time to pull the trigger. Make sure to get the full +7 before firing. Bet Northern Illinois Saturday.

                                Dave's Saturday Free Play:

                                1* on Connecticut -6.5 -109

The Key: Buffalo took advantage of a flat Northern Illinois team coming off the big upset of Notre Dame last week. The Bulls upset the Huskies 23-20 despite getting outgained by 173 yards. It was a complete fluke. UConn won't be overlooking Buffalo this week after that win. The Huskies have been impressive since losing at Maryland in the opener. They came back with a 63-17 win over Merrimack as 15.5-point favorites, a 26-21 loss at Duke as 17-point dogs and a 48-14 win over Florida Atlantic as 1-point favorites. They racked up 421 rushing yards on what was previously a pretty good FAU defense. The Huskies are hitting on all cylinders and should at least be a TD favorite over this Buffalo team that has no offense, ranking 127th at 267.5 yards per game on the season. The Bulls won't be able to keep up in this one especially since they are dealing with key injuries at WR and TE. Take Connecticut.
