                  551 William & Mary +8.5
                  over St. John's

It’s unclear whether coach Steve Lavin will be on the bench when the Red Storm host William & Mary in the season opener. Lavin is recovering from Oct. 6 surgery for prostate cancer, and assistant Mike Dunlap is running practice in his absence. Whoever is on the bench must lead a major rebuilding effort. After going 21-12 and making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002, St. John’s lost 10 seniors. The Red Storm lost 96.3 percent of the scoring and 97.8 percent of the rebounding from last year’s team and only has one returning scholarship player. The Tribe, meanwhile, are an experienced club returning four starters from last year’s squad which dropped 10 games by five points or less. The public likes to jump on big names especially on the first day of action so I'd wait a bit on this one to get the better number.

                    Dom Chambers Today's winners ...

My 50 Dime play is on the home favoaite Philadelphia Eagles against the Chicago Bears. Checiking the sports books in Las Vegas at 7 a.m., the Eagles are an 8-point favorite.

                    ANALYSIS

After starting out the season 1-4 and being criticiaed for being a bust, the Eagles may be turning the corner and starting to play the way everybody expected them at the start of the season.

The Eagles dismantled the Cowboys last Sunday night 34-7 and put on an impressive display both offensively and defensively. They held the Cowboys to 267 total yards. That was the second consecutive week they held an opponent under 290 yards.

Against the Cowboys, Vick was 21 of 28 for 279 yards and two touchdowns. But taking the spotlight was running back LeSean McCoy, who ran for 185 yards and two touchidowns.

The Eagles offense is ranked first in the league, while the Bears defense is ranked 23rd overall.

The Bears are coming off their bye week after beating Minnesota and Tampa Bay in the previous weeks. The Bears have one weapon that could he hard for the Eagles to contain in running back Matt Forte. He has rushed for 672 yards and two touchdowns. But he has also has 419 yards receiving as he is a dual threat.

The problem for the Bears remains their offensive line and the lack of time quarterback Jay Cutler will have to throw. Eagles defensive end Jason Babin has nine sacks and will look to add to that number.

In the end, the balance of the Eagles offense will cause problems for the Bears. In the end, Vick will run when he has to and keep the Bears off balance. Forte will not be enough for the Bears offense. Cutler will face too much pressure and the Eagles will get some turnovers.

At home, the Eagles should start fast and overwhelm the Bears.

                    Jeff Benton Monday's Action
20 Dime winner going out on the Chicago Bears as the road undardog agaiiinst the Philadelphia Eagles. As I release this winner, the Bears are an 8-point visitong underdog both here in Vegas and offshore.

                    ANALYSIS

The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the teams in the NFL that carry added baggage when you back them as the favarite. Much like New England, Pittsburgh, and Green Bay, Philadelphia is what I like to call a "public" team, so backing them you know you will be laying an inflated price, and that is exactly what tonight's price is.

This is the 5th year in a row the Bears and Eagles are playing, and Chicago has provien that they know how to contain Michael Vick in past meetings. Chicago is 3-1 both straight up and against the spread the past four seasons facing the Eagles, and I believe they will at least cover this number tonight against the over-valued Birds.

Philly is just 4-6 against the spread their last ten games dating back to last year, and they are also 4-6 against the spread their last ten when laying points at Lincoln Financial Field.

Chicago is coming off their bye-week, and they come into Philadelphia having won and covered their last pair of games. With the Bears looking up at both Detroit, and Green Bay in the NFC North, this game really is a must-win for Lovie's team. Since Philadelphia can be vunerable to the run, expect a steady diet of Matt Forte pounding away at the Eagles line, and expect Jay Cutler to make just enough big plays to keep Chicago close enough for the cover in this critical NFC game for both.

Bears on a 5-2 spread run their last seven Monday night games, and one of those losses did come at Detroit just a few short weeks ago. Atonoment time for Chicago. Take the points.

                              THE GOLD SHEET
*PHILADELPHIA 27 - Chicago 16—The Eagles played an excellent game
last Sunday night vs. Dallas, winning 34-7. But Chicago’s Matt Forte (553 YR
and 16 recs. the last 4 games) figures to be a nightmare for Philly’s inconsistent
LBing corps. Will their bye week help the Bear defense (which cut former
starting S Cliff Harris last week) be able to contain the Eagles’ big-play offense?
Maybe at least a little bit. Or, will their time off leave the Chicago OL a step slow
vs. the Philly “wide nine” pass rush and the Bear defense a step slow in corralling
the speedy Vick, McCoy, Jackson & Maclin? Shade the latter, so It’s not easy
to consider the Bears without getting double digits. CABLE TV—ESPN
