Fair Grounds - Race #6

#2 Queen Jubilee	Think it might be a bit of a cat-and-mouse game between two of the likely chalks in this one and #6 Our Shenanigan, but I think this one might be just slightly better and able to withstand being on the inside of that game.
#8 Ruby's Ghost	She finished up with a little bit of energy after a slow start going short in the debut run, and there is probably enough upside to consider her today with a cleaner trip and more moderate route tempo. Some appeal.
#3 Pretty Sassy	She went evenly in the debut try, but there is plenty of reasonable upside today off that try while getting around two turns for a capable team. Consider.
Race Summary	Fun race, but I think Queen Jubilee will be able to handle these at a modest kind of price. She has some speed and already owns a couple running lines that might be enough here. Check out the debuter on the rail, too -- big pedigree.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

#15 Sippin on Gin	He only goes if this comes over to the main track, but I think his decent sprint debut might stack up well enough here. Might like this route run if he gets to try it.
#1 Toni's Inferno	Think he has a little bit of appeal while getting over to the turf again if this one stays on. His only career turf run was decent enough while trying cheaper at Evangeline this summer, but I wonder if that might be a sneaky good fit at this level if he can get back to it.
#8 Gem of a Storm	He finished up OK at first asking here a couple weeks back, and the running lines on paper suggest the pace should at least be fair if this goes on the lawn with the full bunch that entered.
Race Summary	Sippin on Gin gets the solid call if this gets rained over, but Toni's Inferno is the midrange price play if this stays on. The race flow could set him up nicely to save some ground and try to come through late.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

#8 Whata Moon	There are a couple of tactical types who could potentially keep her honest, but she's got stretchout pace with a couple solid running lines to her name so far. Should try to take these as far as she can.
#1 Play With Fire	Sharp run from her to score on the grass in the debut try, and she has been working steadily on the main track here since. Don't blame anyone taking a shot on the main at this time of the year, and she's probably right there if she likes it.
#6 California Sunset	Suppose she has a claim on this while dropping for a top team, but I think this is a competitive enough race, and that always leaves me worried about how these connections will get bet. One of the ones.
Race Summary	Whata Moon stretches out from the wide draw, and I'm hoping she'll lay down an honest tempo and never stop.

2^nd race [Clm 15000, 6 ? F] – (2) Super Chief (C) was bet down from 5-1 to 3-1 and finished second after a long head-to-head stretch duel. (1) Beary Funny won his last two starts for a $16,000 tag moving from N2L to N3L conditions. (5) Return the Ring comes back from a 10 month layoff as a new gelding when he won for a $35,000 claiming price and makes a significant drop in class. (7) Charging Aero was claimed for $16,000 two races back and lost all chance at the break last time for $25,000.

3^rd race [Clm 25000 N2L, 6F] – (6) Betta Go Go Go ran first or second in his last four starts hitting the board in 15 of his 19 career races. (1) Alpha Sonny was second at this condition two races back and then tried a NY-bred allowance. (5) David’s Tuition has been off since February of 2024 when he was running in starter allowances at Penn National. (7) Rhum Pressure will move over from Finger Lakes where he had four top three finishes from his last five starts.

5^th race [NY, Md 40000, 1 mi] – (5) Pocket Queens moved from turf to dirt, dropped into the claiming ranks, and ran second well clear of the rest of the field. (8) Syl’s Pleasure was sent off at 5-2 in his debut to run second and gets blinkers on. (4) Our Preferred Pal will drop out of three maiden special weight races where he showed some speed and gets blinkers on and Lasix for the first time. (6) Rodeo Star was second a couple of weeks ago for a $25,000 tag.

6^th race [OC15k/SAL 10k, 1 ? mi] – (2) Greener Pastures has won five out of his last six starts all going two turns at Laurel or Parx and should appreciate this long-distance starter allowance. (8) Valenzan Day was first or second in his last six starts getting claimed three times. Linda Rice just took him back. (1) Beachwalker and (1A) High Tide make a Rudy Rodriguez entry where both are win contenders. (3) Winnin’onweekends won three races in a row during the summers at Parx in starter allowances.

Best bets: Betta Go Go Go (3^rd); Pocket Queens (5^th). Best value: Super Chief (2^nd); Greener Pastures (6^th).

8th race – (7) Hot Blooded (C) dropped from 9-2 to 7-2 and finished a wide third. Makes amends here. (5) J P Hellish will welcome a return to Tapeta. Race 9 at Oaklawn Park | Sunday January 19 | Post Time 5:22 PM Eastern

Pippin Stakes | Purse $150,000 | Fillies and Mares, Four Years Olds and Upward | One Mile and One Sixteenth

Analysis and top contenders:

Tripolina (6) is the fastest horse in the field. Better still, her opening odds will offer excellent value. This is because there are a pair of so-so favorites in the race in Taxed (5) and Corningstone (1). Taxed has won just one time in seven starts at Oaklawn, finishing second three times including five weeks ago when beaten four lengths by Corningstone as the prohibitive 4 to 5 favorite in the similar Mistletoe Stakes. Before that, Taxed lost four straight races and was never really a thread in two of those. Her last win came in a third level allowance race last April at Oaklawn where she earned a 102 Equibase Speed Figure. That effort even if repeated isn’t good enough to beat Tripolina, who earned a 103 figure four weeks ago, and Tripolina is expected to improve off that effort. As to Corningstone, she won the Mistletoe on a muddy track in a field of five. Prior to that, like Taxed, Corningstone had not won in three races and her last win before the most recent was in a second level allowance last June with a 93 figure.

Back to Tripolina, who is a lightly raced four-year-old with a lot of improving to do in her second start since shipping in from Woodbine and moving to the Hartman barn. She closed strongly from last of nine to get second in that race, which screams “prep” for a longer race like this one. She stretched out just once previously, in the fall of 2023, finishing second in the Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes, at this distance. Vasquez rides back after getting to know her and her pattern for improvement off what is already the fastest last race in the field is undeniable because she earned an 86 figure three back, then 93 two races back, then 103 last month.

KHAFRE - I think the shorter distance will help this gelding stay the distance. RETURN THE RING - This gelding's last race was back on Mar 1st but I do believe he can run a good one coming off a layoff. This horse picks up a lot of dough per race. I believe he can augment the lifetime bankroll right here in this race. SUPER CHIEF - The 90 latest race figure looks strong on paper. JAKE ROCKS - This pony coming off a strong performance in the last 30 days is a win candidate in my opinion. That last race must not have been too hard on this gelding for him to be able to race again so quickly. May have to bet on this thoroughbred in this race. He has been claimed in each of his last two starts. This gelding should be at the peak of fitness, this far into his form cycle.

My choice for this race is ONE RASCALLY RABBIT particularly if the morning line of 15/1 holds. Is a sharp contender based on numbers recorded lately under today's conditions. Must be considered - I like the numbers from the last competition. Overall the speed figures of this animal look very strong in this race. MIAS IRISH DYNASTY - With a strong return on investment of +10 this handler has shown very good results with entries running at this distance and surface. Must be given consideration based on the very good Equibase Speed Figure posted in the last race. FILTHY RICH - With Levario aboard him, this gelding will probably be able to break out early in this race.

VITTORIO - Look for this gelding to run a lot better right here in this race. Last contest at Oaklawn Park finishing sixth on the mud is no sign of his true talent. FIFTY CENT DOLLARS - I like to wager on this handicapping angle, a pony coming back off a good outing within the last 30 days. EASTSIDE COOL - The rider/conditioner twosome of Bacon and Hartman has a strong ROI together. Have to make this gelding a solid contender; he comes off a good race on December 22nd. Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Undeniably on edge for a good one today.
