Meet the Contenders: Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park | Sat.

Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown trail preps in Florida, New York and California dot the map this Saturday. Gulfstream Park’s Grade 3 $265,000 Holy Bull Stakes at 1-1/16 miles is the track’s first two-turn prep on the Florida Derby path.

Horseplayers at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet be sure to take advantage of the up to $10 money-back special if your win bet finishes second or third in the key Derby preps. In addition to the Holy Bull, the promo also is good for Aqueduct’s Withers Stakes and the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita.

Let’s meet the contenders for Saturday’s Holy Bull (Race 11):

#1-KINETIC CONTROL: Trainer Dale Romans comes in hot with 3 straight Gulfstream victories between last Saturday and Sunday’s cards. Churchill Downs fourth-start maiden breaker Nov. 22 is set to make his first start of the year. Sired by the Romans-trained Not This Time. Jockey Junior Alvarado is a 2-time Holy Bull winner (Mohaymen ’16, Rocket Can ’23).

#2-FEROCIOUS: Smashing Saratoga debut winner for Gustavo Delgado raced exclusively in Grade 1 stakes for the rest of 2024. Runner-up in the Hopeful and Breeders’ Futurity before a mid-flight fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Barn knows the way to Louisville having won the 2023 Kentucky Derby with Mage. Jockey Javier Castellano owns a pair of Holy Bull victories (Algorithms ’12, Audible ’18). Ferocious, a $1.3 million 2-year-old purchase by Flatter, will race with blinkers on for the first time on Saturday.

#3-TAPPAN STREET: Dec. 28 debut winner expected to vie for favoritism as he rises into his first stakes. Trainer Brad Cox saddles the $1 million yearling purchase by Into Mischief, who is out of a half-sister to Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante winner Grace Adler. Luis Saez guided 2014 Holy Bull winner Cairo Prince. Saez hops off stakes winner Guns Loaded to take the seat aboard Tappan Street on Saturday.

#4-GUNS LOADED: Wire-to-wire winner of the 1-turn mile Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream on Jan. 4 to kick off the Florida Derby series. Jose D’Angelo trainee makes his first start around 2 turns after winning 2 of his first 3 overall. Son of Pegasus World Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Gun Runner. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. takes the mount, replacing Luis Saez, who opts for Tappan Street in the Holy Bull.

#5-HE’S NOT JOKING: Grade 3 Grey Stakes winner at Woodbine on the Tapeta surface seeks his first win on dirt. Uncompetitive eighth at Churchill Downs last out in his only dirt try, beaten 10-1/2 lengths in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. John Velazquez’s lone Holy Bull win came in 1997 aboard Arthur L. Josie Carroll trains the Practical Joke colt.

#6-BURNING GLORY: Rallying 1-turn mile maiden breaker in his third start Dec. 1 at Churchill Downs. First start away from Louisville will be his first stakes test as well. Trainer Bill Mott won this race 2 years ago with Rocket Can. Tyler Gaffalione piloted ’22 Holy Bull winner White Abarrio. Juddmonte home-bred by Into Mischief is out of a half-sister to the star racing and broodmare Close Hatches.

#7-BURNHAM SQUARE: Nine-length maiden breaker Dec. 28 at Gulfstream Park in his third lifetime start. Won over the Holy Bull’s distance while racing with blinkers for the first time in that breakout performance. Ian Wilkes trains the Whitman homebred by Liam’s Map out of their star mare Linda, a Grade 2 winner routing on turf. Edgard Zayas was aboard in his last win and returns.

Santa Anita Race 1: Post: 12:00 PT Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 6-Dealers Special; 5- El Rey Rey; 9-Navajo Warrior
Backups: 10-Brave Blend; 1-Big Juanito; 4-Spearfish.

Forecast: The Saturday opener is an inscrutable starter optional claimer for older horses over nine furlongs on grass that requires as much coverage as your budget allows. A case can be made for almost every entrant in the field. Dealers Special was favored in a similar affair last month but wound up seventh after an impossible trip when wide throughout losing as much ground as he was beaten by. He’s reunited with “win rider” U. Rispoli and hopefully this time the R. Baltas-trained gelding can drop over, get cover, save ground, and then have room to rally when given his cue. El Rey Rey has had trip issues of late that has darkened his form but offers a reasonable chance at a price if he can reproduce his best effort. The J. Mullins-trained gelding can turn it on late if the race shape breaks his way. Navajo Warrior, off since Halloween, returns protected and earned a number in his maiden claiming win that makes him a solid fit at this level. The work tab is solid and should have him plenty fit, and if he can duplicate his dirt form in his first try on grass the T. Yakteen-trained gelding will have a reasonable look at it.

Santa Anita Race 2: Post: 12:28 PT Grade: B+
Main Ticket: Stan From Malibu
Backups: 2-Cody Boy.

Forecast: Based on his most recent outing – a career top tough beat runner-up by a neck while more than five clear of the rest in a similar restricted (nw-2) $16,000 claimer last month – Stan From Malibu should outrun this field. Clearly the controlling speed in a field with nothing but sluggish types, the son of Stanford appears to prefer the Santa Anita main track, and assuming he breaks cleanly can take control early at this abbreviated sprint trip and never look back. We’ll use Cody Boy on a backup ticket just in case our top pick fails to fire, but the bulk of action must go to the C. Gaines-trained gelding.

Santa Anita Race 3: Post: 12:57 PT Grade: A-
Main Ticket: 3-Kopion
Backups: none.

Forecast: Kopion was visually quite pleasing winning the La Brea S.-G1 on opening day while remaining undefeated in three starts around one turn, two of which came over this track and distance, including last year’s Santa Ynez S.-G3. The pace in this seven furlong affair shouldn’t be terribly intense, and this daughter of Omaha Beach is plenty quick but not a need the lead type, making her impervious to the race flow. Her workouts in the interim have been sharp, just as impressive as they were before the La Brea and based on pure numbers she’s fast enough to win right back. While each of her challengers have positive factors in their chart that make them quite dangerous, a small field of only four entrants requires us to take a stand, and she’s it.

Santa Anita Race 4: Post: 1:28 PT Grade: B+
Main Ticket: 3-Rodriquez
Backups: none.

Forecast: Similar to the Santa Monica S.-G3 30 minutes earlier, this race has just four starters (actually five but we’re not counting the hopelessly overmatched Valentines Candy), so from a wagering stand point we are required to zero in on a top pick or simply pass the race. Let’s go with Rodriguez, a maiden winner taking on his Eclipse Award winning stable mate and logical favorite Citizen Bull. From the first crop of Kentucky Derby winner Authentic, the B. Baffert trained colt finished second sprinting in his debut at Del Mar and then improved his Beyer Speed figure 22 points when graduating by seven widening lengths over this track and distance four weeks ago. Based on the projected race flow, J. Hernandez is more likely to employ a stalk-and-pounce strategy rather than gun for the lead, and in doing so his connections can find out if that type of trip will be viable down the road. With two very sharp breezes in the interim (visually more impressive than Citizen Bull’s), he may have more upside at this stage of his career.

Santa Anita Race 5: Post: 2:01 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: Word Play; 1-Source.
Backups: 6-Runamileinmyshoes; 7-Miss Roberts. 10-Mysticism.

Forecast: There should be enough pace signed on to compliment a closer, and Word Play (GB) should fit that role nicely in this first level allowance downhill turf dash for fillies and mares. The route-to-sprint angle is highly effective in these slalom events, and after three outings going a mile last fall the daughter of the high class stallion Saxon Warrior looks capable of rolling off the Hill and tagging the leaders close home. We’re not sure what effect the addition of blinkers will have but the race shape certainly should aid her cause. Three easy training track breezes since her most recent start on opening day should tick her over nicely. Florida invader Source, seeking valuable ship-and-win, also is turning back in trip and brings speed figures that aren’t quite good enough to beat this field but are close. She’s never actually sprinted – she won her debut in France at slightly shorter than mile and has run long in five subsequent starts – but lands top rider J. Hernandez and should be heard from late.

Santa Anita Race 6: Post: 2:34 PT Grade: B+
Main Ticket: 4-Rashmi; 3-Sareeha (Ire).
Backups: 5-Mahina.

Forecast: Rashmi, victimized in the American Oaks-G1 on opening day, returns in much easier spot after finishing fourth (beaten six lengths) behind legitimate Grade-1 performer She Feels Pretty. She simply was given too much to do after losing valuable early position due to her poor outside draw, and under the circumstances she lost little in defeat. Today, from the comfortable number four post position, she’ll be able to dictate her trip under Frankie, who has won with her in the past. Sareeha (Ire), claimed by M. Glatt for $25,000 in November at Del Mar, has improved dramatically (as many do) since joining this stable and is seeking valuable black type in this graded stakes over a mile on turf. She’s a versatile sort that can win on the front or from mid-pack, so new pilot A. Fresu (who takes over for out-of-town regular pilot F. Prat) has the luxury of playing the break and assessing the race flow. Two easy half mile recent breezes should have her primed for another major effort.

Santa Anita Race 7: Post: 3:06 PT Grade: X
Main Ticket: 5-Pilot Commander
Backups: none.

Forecast: Pilot Commander removes blinkers after setting the pace before weakening in the final furlong when finishing fourth (beaten just over two lengths behind Raging Torrent) in the opening day Malibu S.-G1, a performance that earned him a career top Beyer Speed figure (100) that makes him a standout in this second level allowance group. The pace projection looks comfortable, and a bullet recent breeze (5f, :59h) jumps off the page, so this B. Baffert-trained son of Justify is certain to be an extremely short price as a logical, no value, rolling exotic single.

Santa Anita Race 8: Post: 3:37 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: Seal Team; 7-El Potente; 2-Air Force Red.
Backups: none.

Forecast: Seal Team (GB) is hung outside in post nine just as he was when finishing a close third in the San Gabriel S.-G2 behind Johannes, and there’s no horse quite that good in this year’s renewal of the Thunder Road S.-G3, so if he can work out some type of decent trip (meaning dropping over a getting some cover) the son of War Front can return to the winner’s circle for the first time since winning the Twilight Derby-G2 in the fall of 2023. His most recent outing produced a career top 99 Beyer speed figure and anything close to that today should be good enough. “Win Rider” U. Rispoli knows him well and should have the R. Mandella-trained son of War Front doing his best work close home. El Potente didn’t beat a field anywhere this strong when winning a fast allowance race over this course and distance last month but he’s definitely on the upgrade and could easily produce another significant forward move based on his current improving form. He’ll be prominent throughout and if the pace turns up on the soft side he should be able to stick around a long time. Air Force Red missed last week’s off-the-turf Clocker’s Corner S. but returns a week later and projects to have a strong pace presence. If he becomes the controlling speed – that’s the trip J. Hernandez most likely will seek – he should take this field a long way.

Santa Anita Race 9: Post: 4:08 PT Grade: B+
Main Ticket: Berlin Wall; 6-Letmein
Backups: 9-Chasing Ryter.

Forecast: Berlin Wall was best when third in his debut against a similar maiden special weight sophomore state-bred field on New Year’s Day but today – assuming he breaks with his field – the son of Practical Joke should be along in time. The S. Knapp-trained sophomore broke poorly from the rail to lose his best chance but then closed resolutely to be beaten less than two lengths, and from a barn that has powerful stats with the second time starter angle he’s the logical top pick. Letmein, second in the same race our top pick exits, ran quite well in his own right, and with rising speed figures and adding blinkers Mr. Big gelding also should continue to step forward.

Santa Anita Race 10: Post: 4:39 PT Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 7-Ciro du Marzio ; 6-Jeweled Shillelagh
Backups: 9-Heart Headed; 11-Call Sign Seven.

Forecast: Ciro du Marzio was a bit keen early but otherwise enjoyed an ideal ground-saving trip in his promising U.S. debut at Del Mar in late November when hitting the front in the final furlong before being worn down in a legitimate race for the first level allowance competition. He shows a healthy work pattern in the interim, so we’ll assume the Justify gelding will improve in his second local start for W. Ward. Jeweled Shillelagh employed good stalking tactics in winning a restricted allowance affair over this course and distance last month, earning a career top Beyer number (85) that makes him a fit in this league. A similar trip is protected today, and the weight off due to the presence of bug boy Carmona won’t hurt. It may be significant that “win rider” U. Rispoli opts for the other M. McCarthy-entrant Call Sign Seas, who’s a bit slower on figures than ‘Shillelagh and is marooned in the 11-hole but is lightly raced, exits a graded stakes, and may have more upside than our top pick.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Late Pick 4 Analysis

Cal Expo has a 9-race card, and the 0.20 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $20,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6 (8:15 PM PST)

3-Sylvester (12-1)-Price shot comes off a bumpy journey, Luke Plano sticks and will look for a cozy trip tonight. Should be racing near the top of the stack and the price is right to take a swing.
4-Hoo Nien A (2-1)-Has been trying but the trips haven't been smooth. Gets ++ driver change in Lemoyne Svendsen, and if the veteran gets a good steer, it could be picture time.
7-Spartacus Bluechip (7/2)-Dropped to this level in last but took the long way around and could not advance down the lane. Did win at this level on 12-20 and will look for an aggressive steer.

Race 7 (8:35 PM PST)

3-Love Your Work A (12-1)-The trip was bumpy in the Goldschmidt Final and that snapped a 2-race win streak. James Kennedy takes the lines and is in a spot to get sucked around at a big price.
6-Dancin Lance (7/2)-Will toss last from the 9-hole, and before that came off 2 nice wins. The last picture came against this kind from post 5 and could return to winnings ways here.
8-Sneaky Hill (5-1)-Aces invader has been off since 9-17. Qualified twice at CalX, and the last was a very sharp effort on 1-18. Should offer a square price and will take a swing the Plano trainee will fire hot off the bench in its CalX debut.

Race 8 (8:55 PM PST)

5-KB Mac (6/5)-Came 2nd at this level on 12-20 leaving from post 8 and came 2nd as the chalk. Simply put got an awful trip in last, was used hard going 3 wide early in the mile and later hooked wheels. Drops to a soft spot against a formless bunch. Will look for better from Svendsen and should down this group with a fair trip.

Race 9 (9:15 PM PST)

2-Treasure Horizon (7/2)-Drops and Plano sticks on the Goulet trainee. This is an ugly race and not feeling the short price. But will use from the inside and look for an efficient trip with the best pilot in the race between the pipes.
6-Polk Dotlady (2-1)-Northfield invader lost all chance in last breaking stride form post 10. Will look for better in the 2nd start in town and the short field should help.

The Lead:
Saturday's Sunshine Classic and Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf are co-featured on a card that promotes the Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park. The $75,000 Sunshine Classic (Race 10) is part of the Xpressbet Beat the Host contest. Outplay Santa Anita & XBTV racing analyst Millie Ball for your share of weekly and seasonal prizes.

Field Depth:
Stakes winners LURE HIM IN, SHAQ DIESEL, LIGHTNING TONES and BIG MARTINI are among the leading ledgers. Stakes-placed KHOZEIRESS, SECRET CHAT and AWESOME TRAIN provide depth in the field of 12. The horses with the strongest company lines appear to be KHOZEIRESS and LURE HIM IN, the latter Grade 3-placed.

Pace:
Rail-drawn POWER HUMOR likely will be sent to maintain the rail draw edge at this 1-1/16 miles configuration at Gulfstream. But it's HOLIDAY PAY and BIG MARTINI in posts 11 and 12 expected to hustle hard exiting 1-turn races and with a short run to the clubhouse turn. Inside-outside speed usually makes for a hotter pace scenario than what shows on paper. ONE SHARP COOKIE could add to the early fray mid-track. You don't want to close from the clouds with the sixteenth pole finish line in play, so a horse just off the hot pace should be advantaged.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-POWER HUMOR: Primarily a 1-turn runner who has had trouble finishing the deal and will get some help from the rail draw, but the outside speed and additional distance likely negate those gains.

#2-KHOZEIRESS: Inconsistent sprinter failed to offer much in this race last year when sixth, but comes into chance for redemption second off the layoff in the form cycle, which has produced victories for this 5-year-old the past 2 times it's come up in the pattern. Should get an excellent trip under Luis Saez.

#3-LURE HIM IN: Defending champion of the Sunshine Classic rallied to win this race by a head last year at 7-1. Hasn't won in 7 starts since while facing mostly stronger competition than these in the process. Post and running style are both benefits to the way this race could set up.

#4-SECRET CHAT: Lightly raced and well-bred son of Union Rags exits back-to-back allowance wins around 1 turn since moving to Victor Barboza's barn. In a race full of veterans where you have seen the ceilings, this is the up and comer to fear most. Pedigree says 2 turns will suit and the draw is excellent.

#5-AWESOME TRAIN: Superfecta finishes in 8 of his last 9 races with a strong dose of claiming races involved. Antonio Sano has him peaked off 2 straight wins and ready for his biggest test so far.

#6-ONE SHARP COOKIE: Should be another potential pace threat exiting the sprint ranks and will be drawn between potential other speed, making for a tough trip. He's won 3 of his last 4 trips over the Gulfstream main and is freshened for this. Distance will be the test.

#7-SHAQ DIESEL: He's 8-for-9 in the superfecta since coming to David Fawkes' barn in 2023, but all of those starts were around 1 turn. Running style and pedigree suggest 2 turns are within reach and there's no strong case to make against him - just prefer others a bit more.

#8-BELTS 'N BROOKS: Yet another 1-turn specialist who has gone the trip unsuccessfully just twice in 24 starts. 10 of his last 11 have been superfecta finishes against softer competition.

#9-LIGHTNING TREES: Consistent check-getter like most of these, but failed to win in 8 starts last year. While 0-3 around 2 turns, his last was promising over this 1-1/16 miles trip. Can't fully discount for a piece with a great pace set-up. Emisael Jaramillo jumps to ride Power Humor.

#10-SOUPER WATSON: Claimed for $25,000 by Saffie Joseph Jr. last out after a runner-up try at Woodbine. Winless in 7 starts for 2024, but this barn tends to move them up with 33% victories first off the claim. Dirt form yet to be discovered, so I'll take a wait-and-see.

#11-HOLIDAY PAY: Saffie Joseph Jr. and John Velazquez make a rare pairing with this wide-drawn sprinter expected to be gunned for early position. Didn't miss the money in his first 8 starts, but misfired as the favorite in his last 2. This will be his first try in stakes company. With an easier pace set-up, perhaps; but feels like too much to ask.

#12-BIG MARTINI: Wire-to-wire stakes winner in a Tampa sprint last time out, Reylu Gutierrez really has no option other than to come busting out from the 12-hole. Quality 1-turn form and extremely consistent, which sounds like about 6-8 of them in this field. Post makes you demand a bigger price.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
Take your pick in this super-consistent lot. LURE HIM IN is proven over the distance and class, so he gets the nod.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
So many mid-range price horses to choose from in this one. At 8-1 morning line, I'll lean heavily on KHOZEIRESS.

$50 win and place KHOZEIRESS.

4^th race – (8) Vixen was a competitive sixth in the Breeders’ Cup and gets the nod here. (2) Correto could be tough to catch here. (1) Fixin to Bee should pose a late threat. (4) La Gioconda could like turf. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-8.

7th race – (1) River Thames (A) was an impressive debut winner and should handle winners here. (5) Tux exits a stakes and looks like the main rival. (7) Rolando has speed and will be dangerous here. (2) Conquering Cat will be helped by a rail trip. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5-7.

9th race – (6) Gunmetal was an impressive debut winner at Fair Grounds and gets the call here. (7) Grayscale has been working sharply since a debut win. (2) Donut God is 2-for-2 and cannot be ignored. (5) Gate to Wire is worth a look on dirt. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5-6-7. Doubles: 2-5-6-7 with 2-3-7-8.

10th race – (7) Coco Cool gets back on turf and should prove best. (8) Mi Bago has enough speed to overcome the outside post. (2) Charlie’s to Blame fits nicely here. (3) Maui Strong can make her presence felt in the stretch. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-7-8.

12th race - (2) The Queens M G finds a spot where she can start her 3-year-old campaign with a win. (7) Eclatant was third in a Grade 2 stakes and looms the main rival. (9) Rojo Rita was easy maiden winner cannot be ignored. (11) Stunner has speed and could be a main factor despite the post. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-7-9-11.

3^rd race [Ruthless, 7F] – (4) Moonlit Drive (A) was a debut winner three weeks ago for a trainer that rarely wins with first-time starters. (1) Win N Your In will make her first start outside of Florida where she was a two-time stakes winner against open company and Florida-breds. Blinkers go on after running third in the Gasparilla at Tampa Bay Downs. (5) Hollywood Beauty was a debut winner that then ran in three stakes races. After a trainer change, she romped by more than eight lengths in a stakes race at Parx going the seven furlong distance. (3) Volleyballprincess is a rare North Carolina-bred that won his first start at Parx and then was third in that stakes race behind the 5 horse.

6^th race [Toboggan, 7F] – (1) Maximus Meridius won the Gravesend while racing as part of a pace duel and pulled away by a half-length. (4) Coastal Mission won the Parx Dirt Mile in September and then the Forty Niner (G3) at the Big A. The 6-year-old has 14 career victories and $1.1 million in earnings. (2) Full Moon Madness returned from a long layoff to win an allowance and then was part of the pace battle with the top choice. (6) Nelson Avenue won the Blitzen at Parx by more than 11 lengths on a muddy track going today’s distance.

(4) Golden Degree has won three times since she was claimed by Linda Rice earlier in the year for $30,000 and was second at today’s level last time. (1) Shesalittle Edgy ran first or second in all four of her recent races. (2) Sunday Girl ran a career best race in an allowance victory in her second start following a four month layoff.

Race 7, 3:46 p.m. EST - The Withers is the fourth of six stops on the New York road to the 2025 Kentucky Derby with qualifying points [20-10-6-4-2] that are available to the eligible finishers. Only two horses entered in the seven-horse field have already earned some Derby points. A moderate pace is expected in this 1 1/8 mile race which is carded as race 7 out of 9. (7) Omaha Omaha picked up five Derby points when he finished second in the Jerome last month with a late rally. The Virginia-bred has already shown that he can handle racing around two-turns with wins at Delaware Park and Laurel Park. Toboggan Stakes | Purse $175,000 | Three Year Olds and Upward | Seven Furlongs

Analysis and top contenders:

Nelson Avenue (6) enters the race having won three of five since Wayne Potts took over his training last summer. He finished second in another of those five and his only bad race came when badly overmatched in the Cigar Mile Handicap. He ships in off a romping 11 length win at this seven-furlong trip at Parx but he won at Aqueduct in September and missed by a length when second here in the Forty Niner Stakes in October so has no problems running well at Aqueduct. Lezcano rode him at Parx last time out, likely to get used to him with this race in mind, and the 111 Equibase Speed Figure, which is by far the best earned by any horse in this field, ever, was no fluke as he earned 103 to 108 figures in his three races for Potts in August through October.

The other horse with some probability to win is Coastal Mission (4), a warrior with 14 wins in 26 career starts and five runner-up finishes as well. Like Nelson Avenue, Coastal Mission has one win and one runner-up finish at Aqueduct, the win coming when beating Nelson Avenue by a length in the Forty Niner Stakes in October. Jockey Bocachica accompanied Coastal Mission to New York for that win and rides back, and with 107 figures in three of his last five races there is little doubt this horse can win as well.

Both Maximus Meridius (1) and Full Moon Madness (2) can be considered for third on trifecta tickets and second on at least one exacta ticket. Compared to the top two, whose combined record is 20 for 41 on dirt, these two have records of 4-4-1 (in 13 starts) and 3-2-2 (in 10 starts) so are a cut below the top two in terms of their probability to win. Maximus Meridius just won the Gravesend Stakes on December 28, at six furlongs, with a 103 figure over the track at six furlongs and has won at six and one-half furlongs but does not run as well at this seven-furlong trip. Similarly, Full Moon Madness has run this distance or a one turn mile four times, finishing second once and third once, although he did win the only time he ran six and one-half furlongs. He was second in the Gravesend and can run well but appears unlikely to win.

Withers Stakes | Purse $250,000 | Three Year Olds | One Mile and One Eighth

Analysis and top contenders:

Global Steve (1) has dominated in two starts, although the second wasn’t as impressive on paper as the first. However, visually that second win, which came in the Future Stars Stakes on December 30 at Parx, was very impressive. He improved from a 76 Equibase Figure first time out to 85 second time out and the projection to 94 makes him tough to beat. He gets the rail and has tactical speed and there is little doubt about getting nine furlongs as he’s a half-brother to Cagliostro, who finished second in the Smarty Jones Stakes, a Derby prep like this race, in 2023, then third that summer in the Indiana Derby. Trainer Reid won this race last year with Uncle Heavy at nine to one with Sanchez aboard, who rides Global Steve, off a stakes win at Parx just like Global Steve won last out. Furthermore, Reid has good success with shippers to New York as he’s won with seven of 28 (25%) over the past five years.

Mo Quality (5) finished a game second in the Smarty Jones Stakes last month to Coal Battle, who had won the Springboard Mile prior to that so had more stakes experience than this colt who had just broken his maiden. He’s improving and is another worthy of respect as he makes his second start in a two-turn race. Still, his best figure of 89 one back before a 78 figure last out suggests he may prefer a one-turn race better than this two turn one.

Omaha Omaha (7) finished second of seven in the Jerome Stakes last month, a one turn mile over the track. He made up eight lengths in the last half mile which suggests the extra eighth of a mile here may suit him. However, it is often the case that closers at a mile find themselves even further out of touch at nine furlongs, so he may be kept to a minor award again. Just the same, Omaha Omaha won at a mile and one-sixteenth around two turns before the Jerome, although he was also 10 lengths back after a half mile. He improved from a 74 figure three back to 85 two back to 91 last out and could take another step forward.

Uncle Steve (4) and Captain Cook (6) could complete the trifecta by finishing third. Uncle Jim finished third at a mile after a win at seven furlongs and is improving but likely not this good yet, while Captain Cook broke his maiden by nine lengths at seven furlongs last out in the second start of his career, first for Dutrow, and could also make his presence felt for a minor award.
