In all honestly though, Zy is right. I hate watching ultimate amatuer kickboxing. I mean, after 20 minutes of neither guy landing a meaningful shot, you think someone would think... "hey I should see what happens on the ground."

If I remember correctly, Shogun tried to take Machida down a couple of times and wasn't able to make it happen.

Machida is a strange case though. He's got blackbelts in Judo and Sumo. I'd be very surprised to see even some of the best wrestlers in the world take him down with any kind of ease. Dude has spectacular balance and Shogun's wrestling has always been somewhat lacking. I'm not even so sure that taking Machida down was the gameplan so much as the name of the game was space and leaving none of it. I think he used the takedown attempts knowing his ground game was equal to or better than Machida's as a means to prevent separation in order to constantly keep the pressure on Machida and hopefully take him out of his own gameplan. In the end it worked.

That argument makes zero sense. In UFC 1 you had a boxer come in having no clue what was going on and never trained a second in his life on the ground .Toney has been training his ground game for 9 months.Will it matter ? Who knows? But its not the situation


Saying go watch UFC 1 makes about as much sense as saying "go watch Sylvia-Mercer"

Toney can't hang with Randy on the ground. We know that. If Couture gets him down it's almost definetly over. I don't deny that but, fights start standing. Couture is now 47 years old..his chin isn't what it used to be and neither are his takedowns I'll bet. I know his wrestling ability still grossly outclasses Toney. It is possible Toney can catch him on the chin. If he does once, very hard...that could be the beginning of the end. The only thing is Toney might have a hard time following C. to the ground if he stuns him..that would def be a bad idea.

I saw it, so I know how this fight will turn out.

This is a classic example of a fighter's chances being exaggerated over time. When this was announced, everyone was like wtf Randy will kill him. After it percolates for a few months and the hype sets in, everyone gets doubts. Yeah, and Dan Hardy is going to beat GSP too. Pffft.

Couture's takedowns definitely arent what they use to be.

Couture should win easily but no way in hell would I lay -600 on him

Randy still has a nasty clinch game even if his chin and takedowns aren't what they used to be(not like the takedowns would have to be olympic grade to be effective on a guy coming from only boxing until this past christmas).
