    Re: UFC 118 Penn-Edgar 2 Toney-Couture

I just look at Toneys boxing style. He was never the kind of guy that would stay outside and fight. I dont even think the guy has good footwork to be honest. He gets in close and moves his upper body really good, to avoid damage, and is good at counter punching in close.

That is like, the worst thing to do with a guy like Couture. As soon as Toney gets close the fight is going to the ground.

      Re: UFC 118 Penn-Edgar 2 Toney-Couture

The ONLY thing I am worried about is a close quarters uppercut. Randy always does that same hook and feint... hopefully he just walks out and shoots, no punches at all. Toney is not going to be able to stop it, he doesn't need to set it up.

I do have the sinking feeling about this fight. But I am trying to not let emotion overtake the clear logic that Toney cannot win this fight. Did you watch the countdown? He is not even training with a real trainer. He has some police trainer guy... and he obviously doesn't know shit.

I did see it. I thought Juanito was running his camp? Not that I would have given Toney a chance then, but at least Juanito has a resume in MMA.

What do ya'll think the UFC's purpose is in making the J-Lau/Ruediger fight? Do you think their intent is to make a legitimate matchup and give Ruediger a chance to get into the UFC, or is it just an attempt to get Lauzon back on track with a win?

I think Terry Etim got injured and they needed a late replacement.

Just read this over on MMAjunkie:

"Pierce is by no means a great wrestler....2x HS state champ, didn't do anything at Portland St which I didn't even know had a wrestling program....I looked into this one hard for my UFC 118 Breakdown, and Alves has "been doing Judo for 25 years, Muay Thai for 10, and BJJ" he is not a BJJ 1 trick pony, and will have a strong advantage on the feet....if he can stuff a Pierce takedown and get a clinch, he will likely be able to bring it to the mat with a nice judo throw/trip. Best value of the card imo."

Toney has zero footwork. He uses a shoulder roll to avoid punches .He has really good upper body movement but no footwork

Like I said, I am thinking about Alves as well, and I have heard nothing but terrifying things.

That said, the problem I have with that breakdown is that Alves' judo experience is being overstated. He cant' be much older than 25 years old. So what if he has 25 years experience, what has he won? I can't find any accolades on his judo competition. We know that Pierce knows how to take dudes down. He took Fitch down, and IIRC, slammed him. Using that same argument, I am sure that Pierce has at least 15 years wrestling experience (I started wrestling when I was 7- giving me 26 years of wrestling- does that mean I can take Pierce down too?).

Still, I hear Alves is a badass and very exciting. Nothing bad ever comes out of NU. So maybe he is the best value on the card... but you are betting on a fart in the wind against a known commodity in Pierce. If you are strict value guy- do it. I don't know how you can favor him though, because he has never had to fight a wrestler yet in his career. And this will be his first fight in the U.S., and it is under the bright lights. I just want to see him one time first. Maybe I am missing the boat by doing that though...

This is where I'm at. I doubt I'll bet him unless his line goes up a little more. Maybe .25u just in case.

^ I think Florian will do it now. Initially I thought Maynard was the play... but I have changed my mind. Florian is the new GSP.
