What do you mean "doesn't work?" Because I see MMA guys get locked up in it all the time with nowhere to go.

Also, didn't you say that Nino guy used it effectively?
That's what I'm getting at he says it doesn't work but it was stole from bjj. So does that mean parts of bjj don't work?

Since when are MMA gloves "4 oz gloves?"

Was there some sort of switch? They've been 5 oz for as long as I can remember--at least stateside--but I keep running into articles talking about "4 oz. gloves."

I liked the pride gloves the best, weren't they 6 oz?

Anyone here ever considered just going the route of formulating their own fighting system?

Obviously it's been done a thousand times before but it's a way to get past whatever you feel are the faults or limitations of whatever it is that you're currently doing.

It works for a stalling position, for a few seconds. You can accomplish the same thing but better with an over-under. It is really hard to create any offense from it though. you have the omoplata, that's about it.

Nothing in bjj works in isolation. Bjj is about flow. The system takes some of the flow out of bjj, IMO. Nino used it as part of his game... he didn't go out looking for it. When it was there, he took it... not like what you see today, where guys think it is a magic bullet. It's not.

Look, I have had this discussion way too many times. I just can't bear to have it again.

Keep believing in 10thpljj. I really don't care. There are newer academies that have produced world level talent in mma and bjj... so you can't use that as an excuse.

Who says anyone believes in 10th planet jj. I said no gi and any system designed with strikes in mind is the future.

I think thats just a matter of time. All it takes is one young athletic freakishly limber kid to grow up training 10th planet for ten thousand hours.
I have no problem with catch... but I believe in results more than theories. Abu Dhabi is a no gi grappling competition open to any style of grappler. It is dominated by bjj. You get the occasional catch guy or wrestler doing well, but its 90% bjj... and the only non-bjj winner ever was Mark Kerr. Catch has been around since before bjj came on the scene.

As for MMA, wrestling and bjj are the two grappling styles. But really, it is wrestling + bjj cross training vs. bjj. I mean a pure wrestler with no cross training would get subbed about 100% of the time.

I will agree that sport bjj players have lost their way. I saw this vid of the first bjj worlds today... you see how much the sport has changed. The takedowns used to be a much bigger aspect. All the old schol guys had takedowns too. Even Royce took down that big Judo guy.

                      ok... so bjj then...

bjj was designed for self defense. The sport of bjj is relatively recent.

The gi is meant as a training tool for grappling. Even the best no gi grapplers train mostly in the gi.

Do you know who many more bjj guys there are compared to catch? Its just a numbers game, nothing to do with the effectiveness of the style.

Ok so BJ is good at bjj... how has his rubber guard worked out for him? Has he ever used it to transition to anything ever? No.

He gets all his subs from the back. He took Hughes' back using "Octopus guard" which was labeled by Eduardo Telles, but is also old. Telles doesn't claim to have created something though... he just has a DVD showing how he uses the position. If Eddie would do that, I would be on board.

Yeah, winning every grappling competition populatzing a sport and dominating it will do a lot to grow your following.

There are WAY more wrestlers and judokas that bjj players btw.

I don't want you to admit it... I don't care. But let's not act like bjj is some antiquated art that is pointless because of the gi.

You say "look how many bjj guys there are though..." My response is that a quality product garners a following quickly. Catch has been around longer and has not managed to emerge as the pre-eminent martial art in all that time. I like catch, and I have trained under and Eric Paulson CSW trainer for a while... but it is a lot more limited than bjj. I like BJJ because it is the most dynamic grappling art... you can attack whether you are able to get on top or not. If I am not as good a wrestler, I can still win.

I'm just glad catch wrestling doesn't have the culture bjj does that makes any practitioner think his shit doesn't stink. Call catch wrestling limited all you want. No one will listen to your lies.
