Re: Off topic thread(basketball,movies,etc whatever)
I competed saturday... I will have a vid in a couple days. I only ended up getting 1 match in, which I won on points, making me the unlimited weight champion. It was a really interesting experience. I fought a 260 body builder (there was no one in my weight class, no one in the weight class above either, so I asked if I could fight the big'gins). I got taken down for the first time ever in bjj competition. But I got a sweep and a guard pass. But the guy was a damn hulk, really solid and strong- a fairly ripped up 260. I am a roly poly 200. Good times, boring fight to watch I am sure, but it meant a lot to me to get a win off my back against a bigger man.

Congrats, Scientist.
This will no doubt make you even gayer for BJJ.
lol, indeed. The truth is that my wrestling ability has faded hard with time (and I am only 33). So I
cling to bjj as my last chance to be a badass.
Honestly, I just like the sport. I like the sporting aspect of it... but I have come to terms with the fact that it is no better than any other martial art. Some guys can translate the bjj into mma very well, some guys can't. You see the same thing with wrestlers, judoka, boxers, MT guys, etc... it is a crucial aspect that you have to have... but in terms of MMA and self defense, I fully understand that it is just another art.
You look at a wrestler like Rashad, not a great wrestler, but he has made it work. Then you see guys like Rosholt, Munoz, Lindland, etc, their takedowns look horrible. Same thinh with judo, Ishii/Sok/Karo- or if you watch TUF, you see Sako (a national level judo) actually get thrown by Brookings, a mid to low level college wrestler. BJJ is the same, for every Maia or Jacare, there is a Galvao.
So I get that, I just like the sport as an entity in and of itself, outside of MMA. So I like when I see it exercised in MMA. But I also like to see a nice judo throw. Actually a really sweet throw is probably my favorite viewing experience in MMA.

That's cool, Scientist. I understand what you're saying and it's cool that you have found something that you really enjoy doing. I think I'm still trying to find that thing for myself. Once I have more time and money I'm going to get back involved in something again.
BTW, I think Karo's judo has translated pretty well, especially earlier in his career. And I think Rosholt's wrestling actually translated very well, he just didn't have any sub-defense.
Re: Off topic thread(basketball,movies,etc whatever)
Fail on the "deal with it" image?
I meant Karo/Ishii as guy's with judo, not necessarily that they have not translated it... Karo has made his judo work, some guys don't. Judo gets a bad rap because a lot of the pure judo guys are not seen as being as good at takedowns as the wrestlers. But I think this has more to do with judo mindset than anything. People forget that Maia and Jacare are judokas too... Jacare was a judo guy before he was a bjj guy. His takedowns have worked quite well in mma. I always make sure to mention Jacare in my judo players in MMA set.
As for Rosholt, if you can't pick up submission defense, I count that as not translating it. Its like saying some bjj guy has translated his bjj well, if only he could get takedowns. He can't, so it doesn't matter.
