I would love to know what percentage of fights are won by the guy with more failed takedown attempts. I could be wrong, but bet it's more than half.

Majority is a bit of an overstatement from what I remember of the Alves fight. GSP had like 10 takedowns and only one or two were stuffed/not used to hold Alves down for a while.

I agree with luke. Shields has a good chance at being able to dethrone gsp. Koscheck was able to get gsp down 1 out of like 2 or 3 actual td attempts. the one in the first round showed that GSP isnt immune to takedowns. What sets shields apart from other wrestlers is that he doesnt give up on his takedowns, but rather just chains to a different technique much like sonnen (sans any striking). If his double leg td is stuffed he transitions to a single, then ankle pick/trip and so on. Its very impressive how dilligent he is in completing the td. Theres nothing worse than betting on a wrestler who doesnt use his wrestling (stevenson last night). Anyway I expect that line to be at least GSP -600, if not higher

"good chance" meaning its possible. Like the patriots have a good chance to win the superbowl. I think he has the best shot out of any welterweight. its still unlikely but if he doesnt do it, no one will.

I think GSP will fuck Shields up.

I think the only way to get GSP down is to have a really good, explosive shot and Shields isn't that kind of wrestler. GSP should stuff him easily, circle, and box his ears off.

Koscheck is that explosive wrestler. Obviously he didnt use his offensive wrestling at all, but maybe he didnt believe he could take GSP down consistenly. Either way, Shields is a different type of wrestler than fitch (clinch oriented/unathletic), Koscheck (double leg/confident in striking), Hughes (double leg/unathletic/confident in his striking).

I don't think Shields has much of a chance against GSP and I hope the line is a lot better than -600. Shields has shit standup and GSP is the bigger, stronge and better wrestler. Shields only advantage is in the BJJ department which only comes into play if he can take George down or George takes him down. George doesn't have to take him down to win. Shields has to get the takedown to win. I don't think the BJJ gap is big enough for Shields to get the insta kill if it goes to the ground. He isn't Damien Maia, even he has trouble subbing other grapplers sometimes(Miranda, Grove).

It also makes it a lot harder to take someone down when they are a better striker than you. GSP= Better striker + Better wrestler and he is arguably the best at utilizing those two skills together out of anyone in MMA.

Shields only way of winning is managing to sub George. He isn't holding him down or outstriking him. Honestly I think he might get Tko'd in this fight. If he has to stand with George for 25 minutes he is going to take a lot of shots. Maybe I'm wrong, I know he has beaten a lot of good guys, but this is the worst stylistic matchup for Shields in all of MMA. And its Georges.
