Yeah, that (Laimon crap) is why I was surprised when SX told me that Royce had gone to the blue. Helio wore a blue as a protest to the path sport bjj has taken. The blue is the beginning, so he was trying to say that bjj needs to get back to the basics. So I guess Royce is following his father's sentiment.

White's not the beginning?

White is the absence of rank. A blue is generally considered the beginning of practicing bjj... but yet, white is the beginning. But philosophically, blue is the beginning of your bjj journey.

Of course. There is no prescribed curriculum, but you have to know some stuff.

^ supposedly he is a fine grappler. In BJJ though, if you train at a legit place, you are really close to the source. So to you guys, Royce is just a famous MMA pioneer... but to a lot of guys (not me, because I am not in his lineage) Royce is a guy that comes by the gym a couple times a year and you actually know them. MMA and BJJ are a couple of the few sports where your average joe can train right along side with world famous fighters.

Speaking of, Roger is coming to my gym next Saturday and we are going to watch one of my training partners fight that night.

Yeah using Matt Hughes as a measuring stick is pretty tough. He did hang with BJ Penn and choke out Ricardo Almeida and thats just the tip of the iceberg. He would definitely be a handful for anyone similar in weight, black belt or not simply due to his rare fusion of wrestling and submission grappling both offensively and defensively. Dude is strong as an ox and has elite level top control.

Not specifically with regard to techniques. Advancing rank is a combination of technical ability, rolling ability, and mat time. It is not standardized though. There are some things every blue belt ought to know...

Quality control is done by lineage verification. Some are more lax with the lower ranks than others. There are a lot of pretty shitty blue belts out there. You don't see a lot of shitty purples, you see some that aren't up to snuff with the rest of the purples in the world, but you don't see purple belts getting beaten by legit white belts, unless they are wrestlers or juokas or something. It just flat out doesn't happen.

He is a beast. He has a really solid submission and control game from top... and he has the ability to get there.

aside from all of that, it is not true. Royce is definitely definitely a legit black belt. He is not world class, nor was he ever... but he is still a very good blackbelt. Matt Hughes would smash 99.5% of all bjj blackbelts, including Laimon into little tiny pieces. So I fail to see how that is the measuring stick for blackbeltiness.
