This may have an effect on the fight:

There is a possibility Cruz has been having troubles in training camp, which is why he is finally getting the surgery. I don't see the point of coming out and saying you are getting surgery right before the fight. I think Scientist may be right, Cruz is already making an excuse just in case he loses (Jorgensen said this about Cruz as well). If Cruz can't effectively strike tonight, Jorgensen's chance goes way up.

I am going to go with Jorgensen to avoid a potential IWS curse. Too bad Cruz is going to win since I originally was going to bet him.

yeah, I just don't see the point of telling us now. If it is not going to affect anything, why not tell us after the fight, or next week? Why come out 8 hours before the fight and tell the world that he has trouble with his hand and after tonight, he will need surgery. Why supply your opponent with this information?

My guess is that he will be fine, but if things start going south, expect some overly-dramatic hand shaking and elbows when he should be punching- "look how tough I am trying to hang in there even though I am fighting with one arm! Oh and that is the reason I am losing too..."

Even as a WEC champion, Cruz has said in the past he doesn't believe fans know much about him or truly respect his accomplishments.

It's part of the reason he decided to accept this fight instead of undergo surgery on his right hand that would have kept him sidelined the rest of the year.

"Just because I have the belt, that changes people's outlook on you, period," Cruz said. "But do they have respect for me as a fighter yet? Probably not. But I don't care. I'll go prove it on Wednesday."

If Cruz ever gets that respect, then there's a chance Benavidez's claim will hold true.

As of right now, he should probably start expecting a very hungry opponent this week.
