Just got this in my student email
Dear Ohio State student,
A large number of large parties are being planned by students for this weekend, and my goal is to promote your safety. With that in mind, this note will review the applicable laws and university policies so that everyone is informed about the risks and responsibilities of large crowd events, as well as the potential negative consequences of becoming involved in an out-of-control event.
As last Saturday's Woodfest demonstrated, large parties and street "fests" can become uncontrollable. Most people just want to have a good time, but when that many people (many of whom are drinking) gather, spaces can become overwhelmed and otherwise sensible people get caught up in the excitement and act dangerously. Your safety is our top priority. That is why the university strongly urges you not to host large parties or attend them, and why we support police in enforcing laws and shutting large gatherings down at the first signs that they are becoming unsafe.
You can review relevant laws here, but these are key points I want to make:- When police issue an order to leave the area (disperse), this is not a suggestion. It is a command, and failure to follow it is a violation of the law. When the order is given, you should immediately leave the area or go inside your house and shut the door. It is not OK to stand on the lawn, porch, roof, etc. to watch.
- Under the Code of Student Conduct, students who host parties that become out of control can face sanctions in the student judicial process. Think carefully about whether you want to be responsible for the actions of hundreds of strangers. Even if the situation doesn't rise to the level of judicial action, you are likely to be faced with paying your landlord for property damage and with a huge mess to clean up.
- Throwing bottles and cans at people is assault and a serious offense that can result in a felony conviction that will be on your record forever. In addition, arrests for a crime of violence will likely cause you to be placed on immediate interim suspension from Ohio State, pending final outcome of the judicial process. This would mean you could not complete the quarter.
- People who come to watch and take photos and videos are part of the problem. If you get caught up in a crowd that is out of control, you could be charged with rioting, even if all you are doing is watching.
- Porches and balconies have weight limits, and roofs are not safe places to sit or stand.
- Your reputation is on the line. In the digital age, your involvement is searchable forever by potential employers, graduate schools, relatives, loan officers, and anyone else who has an interest in knowing more about you.
Sincerely,
Dr. J
