There has to be an element of luck in success, even if it is just by avoiding the bad luck. Whether it is the chaos which creates the opportunity, or whether you just luck out not getting caught doing something stupid.
When I was in college, I stole some money from my employer and I also ran over a kid and drove off (he wasn't hurt). Had I been unlucky enough to be charged with either felony, I am sure my life would be quite different. We can push the odds in our favor, those being the only 2 felonies I have committed in my 16 years as an adult, but we can never really eliminate chance from our lives.
I also cheated in school a lot and never got caught.
