CORNING, IA (KCCI/CNN) - An Iowa man is nearing the end of his pledge to live through Lent on beer alone, just as Franciscan monks did centuries ago.
During a season of sacrifice, J. Wilson has had people wondering.
"I want to educate beer people about God, and I want to educate God people about beer," Wilson said.
He pledged on Ash Wednesday to live Lent on only beer and water.
"Forty-six days is a long time. I've lost 22 and a half pounds, I think, as of today," Wilson said. "My energy is high. I can do anything. I can go out and chop wood right now."
But living on liquids alone has had its downfalls.
"I'm tired because I go to the bathroom four times at night: 12 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 6 o'clock, so I don't get a whole lot of rest," Wilson said.
Wilson, a local newspaper editor who sipped while at work, has been tempted.
"There were a couple of days where I felt, you know, grrr, hunger pain. You know, 2 o'clock in the afternoon, grrr, 'I could go for some lunch right now.' Four o'clock, there it is again," Wilson said. "It's not a drunk fest. My body couldn't sustain a drunk fest for that period of time."
Instead, Wilson says it has been spiritual.
"I've learned that one, these monks could certainly do what we've heard they did," Wilson said. "Two, I think our human body is more resilient than we give it credit for being

Actually the human body produces enough to sustain itself for extended periods of time provided it is hydrated properly. There are people who fast completely for a month at a time consuming only water and the body uses fat reserves and whatnot. They say after three days or so you actually don't even get hunger pains.
Usually a person can live on water alone for about 3-5 weeks before the body starts consuming it's own proteins(muscle tissue and whatnot). But the world record is 18 days without food or water. I imagine whoever set it wasn't doing a whole hell of a lot to purposefully avoid dehydration and caloric expense but still the possibility is there.Last edited by Ludo; 04-24-2011, 09:56 PM.2013: +8.24u(increased unit size on 5/19)

Also, the beer is more than enough to keep you alive with the carbs alone. Assuming he's drinking 2-4 beers a day minimum he should be building enough carbs and sugars to at least function on a normal level if he hydrates at the same time.2013: +8.24u(increased unit size on 5/19)
