Coyotes at Kings: What bettors need to know

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-220, 4.5)

THE STORY: The Los Angeles Kings have crafted one of the most dominant playoff performances in recent memory, leaving them a win away from reaching the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 19 years. They'll get their first crack at it Sunday afternoon as they entertain the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals. A capacity crowd is expected at the Staples Center, which has already seen plenty of playoff action this weekend and could be the site of the Kings' biggest win since 1993.

TV: 3 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC

ABOUT THE COYOTES: Little has gone right for Phoenix in the conference finals. After coming in on a high following a six-game elimination of the Nashville Predators, the Coyotes' vaunted defense has been overmatched by a deep, speedy Kings roster that has generated 116 shots through the first three games of the series. Coach Dave Tippett noted that his club took several penalties in the third period of Game 3 that perhaps shouldn't have been called. "The game is turning a little dishonest and it's embellishment by players," Tippett said. "When it's done well, it's very hard for the referees, very hard."

ABOUT THE KINGS: Given the way Los Angeles has played this postseason, it's easy to forget that the club came into the Stanley Cup tournament as the eighth seed in the West. And yet, despite having to tangle with the top three teams in the conference, the Kings are just the third team in NHL history to take 3-0 leads in each of its first three series. Los Angeles failed to close out Vancouver at home, dropping Game 4 of its first-round series for its only loss of the playoffs. The Kings used home-ice to beat the St. Louis Blues in the fourth game of round two and will look to do the same against the Coyotes.

    TRENDS:
    - The under is 6-1-2 in the last nine meetings in Los Angeles.
    - Coyotes are 1-5 in the last six meetings in Los Angeles.
    - Kings are 20-6 in their last 26 overall.

    OVERTIME:

    1. The 1995 Detroit Red Wings and 2008 Pittsburgh Penguins both opened with 3-0 leads in their first three best-of-seven series. Both teams went on to lose in the Stanley Cup finals.

    2. The Kings have gone without a power-play goal in eight of their 12 postseason games, including an 0-for-5 effort in their 2-1 victory in Game 3.

    3. Coyotes F Martin Hanzal returns to the lineup after serving a one-game suspension for boarding Kings captain Dustin Brown in the third period of Game 2.

Spurs at Clippers: What bettors need to know

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers (7.5, 190)

THE STORY: The Los Angeles Clippers landed their best punch and still couldn't slow the San Antonio Spurs. Because of that, the Spurs will have a chance to deliver a knockout blow to the Clippers in Game 4 of their Western Conference semifinal series Sunday night. Winners of 17 consecutive games, San Antonio roared back from a 24-point deficit Saturday to stun the deflated Clippers on their home floor and take a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

      TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE SPURS: Coming back from such a huge deficit is one thing, but the manner in which San Antonio did it was something to behold. Trailing by 12 in the third quarter, the Spurs ripped off 24 unanswered points to take a 12-point lead while holding the Clippers scoreless for over eight minutes. Tim Duncan, Danny Green and rookie Kawhi Leonard combined for 22 of the 24 points. Leonard had a stellar all-around game with 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals. He also nailed three 3-point attempts to help San Antonio finish 9 of 22 from behind the arc.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: Blake Griffin had his best performance since injuring his knee in the series against Memphis. He finished with 28 points and 16 rebounds, and scored 14 points to spark Los Angeles to a 33-11 first-quarter lead. Fellow All-Star Chris Paul, playing with a strained hip flexor, had 12 points and 11 assists but has scored a total of four points in the fourth quarter in the three games. Reserve guard Mo Williams helped pick up the slack with 19 points. After hitting nine 3-pointers in each of the first two games, Los Angeles connected on just three of nine attempts Saturday.

      TRENDS:
      - Spurs are 17-6-3 ATS in their last 26 road games.
      - Clippers are 2-6-2 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog.
      - Spurs are 13-3 ATS in the last 16 meetings.

      BUZZER BEATERS:

      1. No team in NBA history has ever come back to win a series after trailing 3-0.

      2. San Antonio’s 17-game winning streak extending from the regular season into the playoffs is two shy of the NBA record set by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2001.

      3. Duncan has four double-doubles in San Antonio’s seven postseason games.

Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Dodgers

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers (-105, 7)

The Cardinals and host Dodgers conclude a three-game series with their two starting pitchers looking to reverse recent fortunes. The Cardinals’ Kyle Lohse has allowed three or more runs in three of his last four starts, while Chad Billingsley has gone six straight starts since his last win. The two National League division leaders will meet again in St. Louis in late July before playing a four-game set at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 13-16.

Both teams are missing several key players for the series finale, including the Dodgers’ Matt Kemp, who hopes to return when he’s first eligible on May 29. The MVP candidate landed on the disabled list last Tuesday with a strained left hamstring. The Cardinals are without Jon Jay (shoulder), Allen Craig (hamstring) and reliever Kyle McClellan (elbow), but right fielder Carlos Beltran appears to have avoided the disabled list after missing parts of four games last week with a sore right knee.

        TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Kyle Lohse (5-1, 2.70 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Chad Billingsley (2-3, 3.83 ERA)

Lohse began the season with an impressive April for the second straight season, but he’s struggled in his last four outings. After being pulled from his previous start because of a strained left hamstring, Lohse gave up five runs over 6 2/3 innings last Tuesday. He was 1-1 with an 8.71 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers last season.

Billingsley allowed four runs over four innings last Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, lasting just four innings for the second straight start. After walking one batter in his first three starts combined, he’s walked 15 in his last five outings. Billingsley is 1-4 with a 4.65 ERA in seven career starts against St. Louis.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in Los Angeles.
        * Over is 4-1 in Billingsley's last 5 starts vs. Cardinals.
        * Over is 9-3-1 in the last 13 meetings.
        * Cardinals are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings in Los Angeles.
        * Dodgers are 2-5 in Billingsley's last 7 starts vs. Cardinals.
        * Cardinals are 0-5 in the last 5 meetings.

        UMP TRENDS - Alfonso Marquez

        * Under is 9-1 in Marquez's last 10 Sunday games behind home plate.
        * Under is 18-7-1 in Marquez's last 26 games behind home plate vs. Los Angeles.
        * Under is 18-7-1 in Marquez's last 26 games behind home plate vs. St. Louis.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. Utilityman Jerry Hairston (hamstring) is expected to rejoin the Dodgers in the middle of next week after a brief rehab assignment.

        2. Cardinals prospect Matt Adams went 4-for-5 with two homers and five RBIs for Triple-A Memphis on Friday. The first baseman is batting .338 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs.

        3. Los Angeles is 12 games into a stretch where it plays 18 of 23 games at Dodger Stadium through the end of May.

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

          Streaking

Derek Lowe, Cleveland Indians (6-1, 2.05 ERA)

The big veteran came into this season with something to prove and is doing just that. He fired a complete game shutout in his last start, scattering six hits while walking four. It was his first shutout since he notched one with the Cubs in 2005 and has allowed two or fewer runs in five consecutive starts, four of which he won.

Wade Miley, Arizona Diamondbacks (4-1, 2.52 ERA)

The 25-year-old lefty pounded the strike zone with 72 strikes out of 102 pitches in his last outing to help the Diamondbacks to a 5-1 win over the Dodgers. He lasted 6 2/3 innings and allowed just a solo home run while striking out five. Miley is 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA since joining the rotation last month.

          Slumping

Kevin Correia, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-4, 4.50 ERA)

Correia was doomed by one bad inning in his last trip to the hill. He allowed five runs in the fourth inning in a 6-2 loss to Miami Tuesday night. After the game he told reporters that the Marlins made him pay when his command wasn’t the sharpest, but he has now lost four straight and has issued 12 of his 15 walks this season during the drought.

Colby Lewis, Texas Rangers (3-3, 3.63 ERA)

Lewis lost his third straight start Tuesday, a 7-4 setback against the Royals. He had two throwing errors in the first inning and ended up yielding four runs before getting out of the frame. He went 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs (five unearned). In his outing before that, he struck out 12, but also served up five homers.

            Notable quotable

"Me and coach have been together for nine years in some capacity. We've had many different conversations, some like that and some not. It wasn't the first, it won't the last. We know how to move on from things and we know each other wants the best for each other. There's no harm done. We're a family." – Dwyane Wade after his altercation with Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra in Game 3’s blowout loss to the Pacers.

            Notes and tips

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Saturday morning in New York. Jones was arrested at 5:02 a.m. ET after he crashed his Bentley, according to the Binghamton Police Department, ESPN.com reported. Jones and the passengers in his car were not injured and an investigation is ongoing. Jones (16-1) won the 205-pound UFC title last year by stopping Mauricio Rua and has defended the title three times since. His next bout is scheduled for Sept. 1 against Dan Henderson.

The Minnesota Lynx begin their WNBA title defenses Sunday in a home matchup with Phoenix. The Lynx, which are 20-7 against the spread in their last 27 home games, opened as 10.5-point favorites against the Mercury. The total is pegged at 174 points.

Cleveland Indians pitchers have walked 154 batters this season. Among American League teams, only Toronto (160) has walked more. Making that statistic even more distressing for the Indians is that the top two starters in their rotation both rank in the top three in the league in walks. No. 2 starter Ubaldo Jimenez leads the league in walks and No. 1 starter Justin Masterson is tied for third in the league in walks.

                        Hondo

The beat goes on and on and on. Hondo wiped out yesterday with the Yankees, D’backs and his Preakness investments involving Creative Cause, which creatively caused the debt to grow to 1,645 draveckys.

Today, Mr. Aitch threw the dart and it landed on Hudson -- 10 units on Los Bravos.
