I'm laying the points with Syracuse on Saturday afternoon. If you had the Orange in their February 25 meeting with Marquette, you had to be thinking you deserved to cash the ticket. Syracuse was the better team for much of the game leading at the half and holding a seven point lead with just over seven minutes left in the game. In fact, the Orange looked primed to pull away. But they couldn't overcome Davante Gardner's career-best 26-point outburst or a 29-5 deficit at the free throw line. Gardner averages 11.4 ppg and he nearly doubled his rebound average, grabbing eight in the contest. And yes, that FT disparity was ridiculous. Marquette took 35 FTA to just 7 for the Orange. I'd be absolutely shocked if the whistles blew that much in favor of either side in an Elite-8 matchup. Despite Gardner and the FT situation, the game still was close to the end, with Marquette winning 74-71 as a 1 1/2 point home underdog. Just looking at that number in Milwaukee tells me Syracuse is a tad under-valued in this neutral site affair. It's also a fair statement to say that the Syracuse 2-3 zone is working much better now than it was a month ago. There are no leaks in Boeheim's trademark defense right now which means less damage to be done by Gardner. This version of the 2-3 mu¸st be beaten from the deep perimeter and Marquette comes in making just 30.5% of their 3-pointers this season which ranks 308th in college basketball. The Orange allow just 6 made treys per game on 28.7% shooting and they give up just 20 made FGs per game overall on 37% shooting. The defensive numbers get more impressive the deeper you dig. The Orange have allowed their three Big Dance opponents just 0.77 points-per-possession. Size (big time), defensive play, shooting, and line value all lie with the Orange and so do the situations. Syracuse is a beast on the defensive end, averaging over 9 steals per game. They have 11, 10, and 12 steals in their three tourney games and when the momentum starts rolling it usually continues under Boeheim. His Orange teams are on a 28-11 ATS run after producing at least 10 steals in at least two straight games. Meanwhile, the Eagles are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six games overall and they've covered just 9 of their last 27 away from home after covering at least two straight games.
