Scott Spreitzer laying the points with Oregon State on Saturday night. The Cal Golden Bears are an absolute mess right now, thanks in part to an injury-bug that has turned the starting 22 into a M-A-S-H unit. Nearly half of their 22 starters are sidelined at this point of the season and now they have to face the firepower of the Oregon State Beavers. We went against OSU, taking 26 points and not only cashing with Eastern Washington, but the Eagles came through with an outright win, dropping the Beavers from the top-25. But since then, Mike Riley's squad is unbeaten. Oregon State has won five straight games. The offense has scored at least 33 points in all six games this season, averaging 43.3 ppg on 507 yards per game. QB Sean Mannion is tearing defenses to shreds with a fantastic receiving corps and an accurate arm. Mannion has completed 67% of his passes, despite throwing 289 times. He's averaging nearly 9 yards per attempt with 25 TD passes and just 3 INTs. Brandin Cooks leads seven players in double-digits in receptions on the season with a whopping 63 grabs! Six of those seven players are averaging over 10 yards per catch. The OSU attack faces a Cal defense that ranks 102nd against the run, 124th defending the pass, and 123 in total yards allowed per game. They're allowing over 43 ppg on the season (124th). No less than eight defensive players, including LBs and DBs are banged up and either listed as questionable or out for this game. They'll likely be missing RB Daniel Lasco who is expected to miss two games with an injury. Lasco is Cal's second-leading rusher. Oregon State is off a huge win over a decent Washington State team and they do have Stanford up next, but HC Mike Riley keeps the troops focused. The Beavers are a perfect 3-0 on the road this season and last year had no problem in a post-Stanford, pre-Oregon sandwiŸch, crushing the Cal Golden Bears 62-14 as a 15 1/2 point favorite. The Beavers are on a 20-9-1 ATS run away from home and they're outstanding in the month of October where they truly hit their stride, going 41-15-1 ATS the last 57 times. The Golden Bears are on a 1-10 ATS slide at home and they're on a 0-8 ATS losing streak in conference play. It's been a tough first season for Sonny Dykes and the season gets a little longer this week. I'm laying the points with Oregon State,

393 Utah Utes plus 4 1/2 over ARIZONA WILDCATS

The Utah Utes (4-2) travel to the desert this week to take on the Arizona Wildcats (3-2). The Utes come into this game winners of two of their last three, most recently stunning the #5 ranked Stanford Cardinal last week, 27-21. The Cardinal was held to just one touchdown after the first quarter in that game. Despite that impressive victory and taking on a difficult schedule that has included Oregon State, BYU, UCLA and Stanford, the Utes have gotten no respect, as they enter this one unranked. Their two losses have been by a combined margin of ten points. A few bounces here and there, and they could be undefeated. The Wildcats are going in the opposite direction. Opening up the season versus lightweights Northern Arizona, UNLV and Texas San Antonio, they began their 2013 campaign undefeated. In recent weeks, they have lost to Washington (31-13) and a struggling USC team (38-31). Last year Arizona defeated Utah 34-24, a Utah team that ended the season with only one more victory than they have right now. Despite the ten point win, the Wildcats outgained the Utes by a small margin of 31 yards. The Utes will be looking to atone for that loss this week. I think they’ll be able to do so. The Utes are well balanced offensively, as they average 277.7 yards per game passing and 192.5 yards per game rushing. In last year’s game, Ute QB Travis Wilson passed for a solid 28 for 40 for 311 yards and 2 TDs. This year he has accounted for 18 TDs (13 passing, 5 rush), passing for 1,640 yards with 61.7% completions and 283 yards on the ground. His receiving corps is led by Dres Anderson, who has 28 catches for 592 yards and 5 TDs on the season. Versus Stanford he caught 4 passes for 82 yards and a TD, and added another TD rushing. Last year versus the Cats he caught 7 passes for 73 yards. Joined by Sean Fitzgerald (20 catches for 296 yards and 3 TDs) and Anthony Denham (16 catches for 220 yards and 1 TD), the Ute wideouts are more than competent. As for their ground game, they possess two versatile running backs in Bubba Poole (441 yards rushing, 5.2 yards per carry, 195 yards receiving and 1 TD) and Lucky Radley (163 yards rushing, 6.5 yards per carry, 47 yards receiving and 3 TDs). Poole was a major catalyst in their victory versus the Cardinal, as he combined for 186 yards rushing/receiving. The Utes should fare well on the ground versus the Wildcats, as Arizona allows 169.2 yards per game. The Wildcat offense has had their share of problems through the air with QB B.J. Denker. They have averaged just 161.6 yards per game passing, which ranks them at a abysmal #115 in the nation. In fact, through five games no Wildcat has more than 15 catches. Although the Wildcats have a decent back in Ka’Deem Carey, the Utes counter with a defensive front that has allowed a respectable 133.7 yards per game rushing. Although that does not rank them among the nation’s best, the Ute defense should hold up decently well versus the one dimensional offense of the Wildcats. It’s a defense that has seen the likes of the potent offenses of Oregon State, BYU, UCLA and Stanford. Arizona pales in comparison to thehse teams. The Utes should be able to have their way versus the Wildcat defense with Wilson, Anderson, Poole and Radley. They should get a nice road win here, and as a result, win some respect and prove that Cardinal win was no fluke.

          UTES 35-28 (3 Units)

                            UCLA (381) AT STANFORD (382)
Latest Line: Stanford -5.5; Total: 54.0

Stanford has been quite a profitable school for me to wager on in the David Shaw era, going 21-11 ATS (66%). However, this current Cardinal team is just not as impressive as in years' past, especially on defense where they have allowed 318 passing YPG in Pac-12 play this year. This won't hold up against UCLA stud QB Brett Hundley, who has led his team to a 5-0 mark (SU and ATS) with 34+ points in each game and 547 total YPG, which ranks fifth in FBS. UCLA's defense allowed 381 rushing yards in the two losses to Stanford last year, but it has really improved in this area in 2013, holding opponents to a mere 138 rushing YPG on 3.4 YPC. The Cardinal are just 2-13 ATS (13%) off an upset loss in Pac-12 play since 1992, and UCLA has thrived in the underdog role under Jim Mora, going 5-1 ATS (83%). The Bruins will remain unbeaten with an outright win on Saturday.
                            PLAY ON: UCLA
