Both of these teams have similar things in common. For one, they're two of the worst teams in the league. Also, both the Flyers and Rangers have had problems scoring which has come from a lack of putting shots on net, with the Rangers are the bottom of the league with 193, and both tied with just eleven goals so far this season. The Rangers are a little banged up heading into this one missing stars goalie Henrik Lundqvist and forwards Ryan Callahan and Carl Hagelin. I don't think that the Rangers are a "team" right now and I like the fact that the Flyers have been off a week since their 4-1 home loss to Pittsburgh in a game that was tighter than that final score. Look for a huge effort from the Flyers tonight.

2-Unit Play Take #54 New Jersey (+100) over Vancouver (7 p.m., Thursday, Oct 24th)
Vancouver is off a wild 5-4 win on Long Island vs a Islanders team that was short handed. The Devils have been slow out of the gate but get a second and final shot this season after losing 3-2 in Vancouver in a game that was on back to back games for the Devils. Now New Jersey catches Vancouver on their sixth game on the road and their fourth in six day's, look for the Devils and former Canuck goalie Cory Schneider to get some payback tonight.

2-Unit Play Take Over (5.5) Chicago at Tampa Bay (7 p.m., Thursday, Oct 24th)
The Blackhawks played Tampa Bay at home in the second game of the season in Chicago and despite putting a lopsided 39-16 shot total up lost the game 3-2. I think we will see much more offense from Tampa Bay on home ice in this one, it also looks like aging Blackhawk goalie Nikolai Khabibulin will be in the net. I think this one will get over the total with easy for two teams that have good offense.

The Bucs are winless and they have allowed 31 points in each of the past two weeks and the Panthers have scored 30-plus points in three of their last four games. Schiano can’t be thinking the Bucs will win this game with 17 points. One thing it looks like Schiano was right about and that is that Freeman is not an NFL quarterback. Glennon might not be Andrew Luck, but he is going to be aggressive. He has thrown at least 43 passes in each of his three starts and this week he might attempt 50 because he will be without his starting running back, as Doug Martin will be out with a shoulder injury.
The Panthers are primarily a running team, but the Bucs have tended to go over vs these types. Tampa Bay is 6-0 OU when hosting a team that has rushed the ball for an average of 30-plus times per game season-to-date. The SDQL text is:

Last week against the Falcons, Tampa had a whopping 37:49 of possession time, but they lost 31-23. This also points to the OVER, as the Bucs are 6-0 OU off a loss as a dog in which they had at least three more minutes of possession time than their season-to-date average, going over by an average of 11.9 ppg. Carolina has a chance to be over 500 for the first time in FIVE seasons – the longest streak in the entire league. They should not be passive. The Panthers are 7-0-1 OU since 2002 when favored a team with no wins after week one. The SDQL is:

Last week against the Rams, Newton was an efficient 15-of-17 passing and this is an OVER indicator. Carolina is 9-0 OU as a road favorite after a week in which they had fewer than ten incompletions. The SDQL is:

Finally, we have a league-wide system that just plain continues to win. At the beginning of the season it read, “The league is 26-0 OU on the road when they are off a game vs the Rams last week in which they scored 30-plus points, had at least 152 yards passing as long as they are not a dog by more than a TD and their game against the Rams did not go over by 21-plus points.” Now it is 28-0 OU with an average OU margin of plus 12.3 ppg. The Panthers qualify here.
Desperate for a win, Schiano has become a risk taker, going for it on fourth down and playing aggressively on both sides of the ball. This is why the Bucs’ last two have gone over and this one should as well.

Note: With autumn in the air, the leaves changing colors and pig roasts aplenty, the return of the NFL ‘Ugly Pig’ is upon us and with it the Bucs assume the role with aplomb (if there is such a thing) tonight. And our always unerring database points out the fact that winless home dogs in the NFL have long been moneymakers, currently on a 30-18 ATS run on the blind since 2009. Granted, there is almost never anything appealing about these pigs, err dogs, and this year’s Tampa Bay edition is no different. They have, however, shown moderate improvement since their Bye Week, holding each of their last two foes to season low yards. Meanwhile, the Panthers enter on a roll with a pair of wins and covers over Minnesota and St. Louis. It should be noted, though, that Carolina is just 4-7 SUATS in games off two wins-exact, and also 0-3 SUATS away in games after posting 30 or more points on the scoreboard in each of its last two games. With the Bucs headed off to Seattle next week, this looks to be the perfect time to crack the win column and finally make some bacon with these swines. The clincher from our database: 0-5 or worse NFL dogs from Game Six out off a loss of 8 or more points are 14-0 ATS since 1980 when facing a sub .800 opponent off a win of 4 or more points provided the winless dog scored 17 or more points in its last game and the opponent scored less than 50 points in its last game.
