Historically, the Olympic break in the NHL is tough for handicappers. Hockey action will end on Sunday, February 8 and not resume until Tuesday, February 25. The problems after the break are obvious--lack of momentum and continuity, injury, emotional and/or physical fatigue. But there are also problems before the break--some teams are just 'playing out the string' looking for some much needed time off while teams that are playing well will go hard down to the wire.

In my view, the Winnipeg Jets are a team that will be battling all the way up to the Olympic break. After a lethargic start to the season they've been a different team under new coach Paul Maurice. Since Maurice took the reins the Jets have won 9 of 11 with their only two losses by a single goal. They've been playing excellent defense and getting great goaltending from Ondrej Pavalec. Most importantly they play hard for 60 minutes every night.


The Washington Capitals have been a huge disappointment this year and have been in horrible form of late. The Caps are struggling in every phase of the game. Actually, their power play remains one of the most dangerous in the league (tied with Pittsburgh for most PPG in the NHL) but nothing else is working. Shoddy defense, inconsistent offense and po¶or goaltending. Most problematic could be their lack of intensity on a night in/night out basis. Alex Ovechkin remains a defensive liability (though a great offensive player) and could be distracted by the forthcoming Sochi games--for a competitive Russia team in front of his countrymen.


Winnipeg's focus and tenacity should get them the victory here against an inconsistent Washington side that either is looking ahead to a challenging Olympics or a much needed break.
