MLB roundup: Tanaka to pitch Sunday for Yankees
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE
New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka is expected to be back on the mound Sunday in a major league game for the first time in more than two months.
The Japanese right-hander is scheduled to start against the Toronto Blue Jays in Yankee Stadium as long as he makes it through a bullpen session in preparation.
Tanaka has not pitched in a game since July 9 when a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow surfaced. On Monday, he tested the elbow by throwing 65 pitches in five scoreless innings of an instructional league game, giving up six hits and striking out four.
"He's pitching if he's OK," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before the Yankees played the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night. "We'll see how he holds up."
Girardi indicated that Tanaka will be limited to 70 to 75 pitches against the Blue Jays. Tanaka also could start one more game before the end of the season.
The Yankees want to see how the elbow responds and determine whether he will need surgery.
Tanaka signed a seven-year, $155 million contract with the Yankees last winter and has a 12-4 record with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts this season. He got off to a fast start with an 11-1 record and 1.99 ERA in his first 14 outings.
---Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton hopes to return before the end of the season after suffering facial injuries when he was hit by a pitch last week.
Stanton posted pictures of himself Tuesday on Instagram showing his face after he was hit by the fastball from Milwaukee Brewers starter Mike Fiers and the progress he has made since he was struck on the left side of his mouth last Thursday.
"The Aftermath…Making huge progress!! Want to thank everyone who has played a part in my recovery process. Your kind messages, thoughts & prayers have meant the world to me. Pushing forward," he said in a message on Instagram.
Stanton was scheduled to meet with doctors on Tuesday to assess his recovery. He suffered facial fractures and dental damage from being hit.
---Houston Astros outfielder George Springer was shut down for the remainder of the season, bringing a premature close to his promising rookie season.
Springer was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 20 with a left quad strain and suffered a setback during a subsequent rehab assignment.
Despite rest and rehab, the club opted to keep Springer out. Springer hit .231/.336/.468 with 20 home runs and 51 RBIs in 78 games.
---Indians OF Ryan Raburn returned to Cleveland on Tuesday to undergo an MRI on his left knee.
Raburn suffered a hyperextension at Detroit on Sept. 13.
A decision on his return will be made pending the results of his MRI.
---Yankees infielder-outfielder Martin Prado will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing an appendectomy on Tuesday morning.
The 30-year-old Prado, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list, was batting .316 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs in 37 games for the Yankees since he was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the trade deadline on July 31.
To take his spot on the roster, the Yankees signed minor leaguer Jose Pirela to a major league contract. Pirela could become the 57th player to see action this year for the Yankees, which would be a club record.
---Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis helped rescue accident victims in an overturned truck on a freeway Monday.
Davis, who is serving a 25-game suspension for a positive test for amphetamines, came upon an overturned truck on I-295 and waived passers-by over to help him lift the truck off a man who was pinned underneath, according to MASNSports.com.
One person was ejected from the vehicle and three others were injured. A 61-year-old man was transported to a hospital with serious injuries that were not life threatening, according to a report.
---When the Atlanta Braves open their new stadium in Cobb County and leave Turner Field behind, the venue will also have a new name: Sun Trust Park.
The 25-year naming rights agreement was announced Tuesday at a groundbreaking ceremony.
The Braves will play at Turner Field in Atlanta until 2016, before the stadium built in 1996 for the Olympics -- the Braves' first season there was 1997 -- shuts its doors.
Sun Trust is a bank holding company with more than $170 million in assets.Comment

Preview: Brewers (78-72) at Cardinals (82-68)
Game: 2
Venue: Busch Stadium
Date: September 17, 2014 8:15 PM EDT
After a dismal slump dropped them out of the NL Central lead and threatened their playoff chances altogether, the Milwaukee Brewers are back to playing the type of baseball that had them in first place for a majority of the season.
In order to gain more ground, Milwaukee likely will have to solve a pitcher who held it in check just 10 days ago.
The Brewers seek a sixth victory in seven games as they face Adam Wainwright and the division-leading St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.
Milwaukee (79-72) held a 1 1/2-game edge in the Central on Aug. 25, then dropped 13 of 14 before its current run. It sits four games back of St. Louis in the division after beating the Cardinals 3-2 in 12 innings Tuesday, and it remained 1 1/2 behind Pittsburgh for the second wild card after the Pirates beat Boston 4-0.
Carlos Gomez walked and stole the next two bases before scoring on Hector Gomez's bloop hit in the 12th.
"We're playing like it's the playoffs right now and I think that's what we need," Carlos Gomez said. "Nobody told us it was going to be easy. We have to fight for it."
The Cardinals (83-68) had their three-game winning streak snapped after being shut out for the final 11 innings. They'll look to bounce back behind Wainwright (18-9, 2.56 ERA), who can tie for the major league lead in wins.
Wainwright dominated the Brewers on Sept. 7 and needed only 100 pitches to toss a complete game in a 9-1 victory. He followed that by winning his third straight start Friday, allowing one run in eight innings of a 5-1 win over Colorado.
Things weren't going so well for the right-hander prior to those outings. He allowed a season worst-tying seven runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 7-4 loss to Milwaukee on Aug. 1, beginning a stretch during which he went 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA in seven starts before beating the Brewers.
"When I'm cruising, I'm ahead in the count, throwing all my pitches for strikes, trusting my defense and pounding the bottom of the zone," Wainwright said. "So, doing those things, usually things work out right."
Wainwright also beat Milwaukee 10-2 on July 12, giving up two runs in seven innings.
He's had some trouble with a couple of the Brewers, though, as Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez each are 4 for 9 against him this season. Ramirez is hitting .411 with three homers and eight doubles off Wainwright in his career.
Milwaukee counters with Mike Fiers (6-2, 1.84), who will be making his first start since being involved in an unfortunate incident.
Fiers improved to 6-1 with a 1.74 ERA in seven starts since being recalled from the minors Aug. 9 after allowing three hits in five scoreless innings of a 4-2 win over Miami on Thursday.
The right-hander, though, hit Giancarlo Stanton during his final inning and the Marlins slugger suffered facial fractures. Reed Johnson pinch-hit for Stanton, and Fiers hit him on the very next pitch. In an odd twist, umpires ruled both players had swung at the pitches that hit them and Fiers got out of the inning before the benches cleared.
"You never think of throwing at somebody like that. Never in my life has that happened," Fiers said. "I just feel very, very sad that I hit him. I'm sorry to their teammates, their fans, his family. It is just tough."
Prior to that outing, Fiers gave up two runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 6-2 win over the Cardinals on Sept. 5. He's 2-0 with a 1.31 ERA in three starts and two relief appearances in his career against St. Louis.Comment
