CFL Betting Notes - Week 15
    David Schwab

    Week 14 Betting Recap

Last weekend’s betting action in the CFL started with Winnipeg’s 29-9 victory against Ottawa as an 8 ½-point home favorite. In the backend of Friday night’s doubleheader of games, Hamilton stunned British Columbia 24-23 as a heavy 12 ½-point underdog on the road.

In a big East Division clash on Saturday, Toronto upended Montreal 33-19 as a seven-point home favorite to move into first place in the standings. Week 14 came to a close with Calgary grinding out a 15-9 victory on the road against Saskatchewan as a 5 ½-point favorite to extend its straight-up winning streak to nine games.

    Friday, Sept. 29

Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS) vs. Ottawa RedBlacks (5-8-1 SU, 9-5 ATS)

    Game Overview

The Roughriders remain in the thick of the playoff hunt despite Sunday’s loss, but they are going to have to find a way to get their offense back in gear down the stretch run of the regular season. Kevin Glenn was back in the lineup at quarterback against Calgary after missing some time due to injury, but he ended the game completing just 12 of his 19 passes for 127 yards. He left the game in the second half with an injured hand. Saskatchewan’s ground game did not help the cause with 28 yards on 12 carries.

Ottawa fell out of first place in the East with its second loss in three games both SU and against the spread. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in its last seven games. Last Friday’s loss was the first time that the RedBlacks failed to post at least 20 points in a game this season. Ryan Lindley got the start at quarterback for an injured Trevor Harris and he completed just 44.4 percent of his 36 passing attempts for 151 yards.

    Betting Trends

-- Saskatchewan has won four of the last six meetings SU with the series tied at 3-3 ATS. The total has gone OVER in the last three games in this inter-division tilt.

Montreal Alouettes (3-10 SU, 4-9 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (11-1-1 SU, 8-4-1 ATS)

    Game Overview

Montreal will have a tall task on its hands this Friday night to try and stop its current six-game skid both SU and ATS. The Alouettes have posted just one SU victory in their last nine games while going a costly 2-7 ATS. In last week’s loss to Toronto, their defense held Ricky Ray to 182 yards passing, but it gave up 141 yards to James Wilder running the ball. Montreal quarterback Darian Durant was picked off three times in that game.

Calgary proved it can win ugly if it has to after averaging 32.9 points in the first eight wins of its current streak. Bo Levi Mitchell went an efficient 24-for-32 against Saskatchewan on Sunday for 222 passing yards and Jerome Messam extended his league-leading rushing total to 897 yards with 127 yards on 23 carries for an average of 5.5 yards a run. The Stampeders also lead the league in points allowed; giving up an average of 17.8 points a game.

    Betting Trends

-- Montreal actually won the first meeting this season on July 14 in a 30-23 victory as a four-point home underdog. The Alouettes are 4-2 SU in the last six meetings with a perfect 6-0 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last nine games in this inter-division matchup.

            NCAA-F | Miami-FL vs Duke
            Play on: Miami-FL -6 -110 at betonline

Duke is off to a 4-0 start, matching its 2014 season when it started 4-0 and that streak ended with a loss against the Hurricanes and we can expect a similar result here. The Blue Devils have shown good balance on offense and the defense has overachieved thus far as they are ranked No. 16 in total defense and No. 17 in scoring defense. Offensively, they have been buoyed by a strong rushing attack that has three players with over 200 yards on the ground but the opposition has played a factor in that. The Miami defensive front will be the best the Blue Devils have faced as the Hurricanes came into the season with the No. 2 ranked defensive line and No. 2 ranked linebacker unit in the ACC. Duke is one of four teams in the nation that is off to a perfect 4-0 ATS start and while some people ride those streaks, it is best to go contrarian. We like what we saw with Miami last week. After having not played in 21 days because of the effects of the hurricane, it got off to a slow start against Toledo and trailed 16-10 at halftime. The Hurricanes found their groove however as they outscored the Rockets 42-14 in the second half. That is something they can carry over into this week and while laying chalk on the road is a rare thing for us, we make the exception here with a team that talent-wise is much better. Good news on the injury front for Miami is that 2016 leading rusher Mark Walton, who was injured last game and 2016 leading receiver Ahmmon Richards, who has missed both games, have both been upgraded to probable. Going back, the Hurricanes are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points. Play (105) Miami Hurricanes

              NCAA-F | Miami-FL vs Duke
              Play on: Miami-FL -6 -110 at BMaker

              Miami FL -6
The Hurricanes head into Duke Friday night and have value laying under a touchdown here.
The Hurricanes ended up blowing away the Toledo Rockets last week, after trailing by 6 at the break. It showed a lot in terms of what this Miami team is really like, as they came out with what looked like a purpose in that 2nd half.
Miami is easily the quickest and most difficult team this Blue Devils team will have seen thus far into the season. They also haven't had much luck against the Hurricanes in the history of the program. Miami leads the head to head series 12-2 and has dominated in almost every fashion.
Some trends to note. Hurricanes are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.Hurricanes are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games on grass.
This number is valuable here. Miami will control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
              Back Miami.
              Good Luck, Razor Ray.

Play on: Utah State +3½ -102 at betonline

Play - Utah State (Game 110).
Edges - Aggies: 6-3 ATS the last nine games in this series, including 3-0 when BYU is playing with rest… Cougars: 0-3 SU and ATS and ITS (In The Stats) versus FBS foes this season… With college football home dogs that scored 55 or more points in a SU road favorite win and cover in their last game 14-8 SU and 15-6-1 ATS, we recommend a 1* play on Utah State. Thank you and good luck as always.

                  Play On: Miami -6.0
Duke has started the season 4-0. However, their 3 wins over FBS opponents came against teams (North Carolina, Baylor, Northwestern) that currently have a combined 3-8 record. Friday night will be far and away their toughest opponent they’ve faced this season. They’ve also benefitted from a turnover margin of +5 thus far, and Miami has turned it over just once during its first 2 games.
Miami shook off the rust from a 3-week layoff in last Saturday’s 52-30 home win over a very good Toledo team, and covered as a 13.5-point favorite while doing so. The Canes trailed 13-10 at the half in that contests before outscoring Toledo by a decisive 42-17 margin during 2nd half action. This will be Miami’s first road game of the year, and they were a perfect 4-0 SU&ATS last season as an away favorite under new head coach Mark Richt. Since 2005, Miami is 6-0 in games played at Duke and won by 10 points or more on each occasion. Bet on Miami minus the points.

                    NCAA-F | Nebraska vs Illinois
Play on: Illinois +6½ -120 at betonline

A few weeks ago, I successfully played on Illinois when it upset Western Kentucky. Readers of this column may recall that we successfully played against the Illini in their following game. Playing their first road game and doing so on a short week, I predicted that they'd get blown out at USF. They did.
The shoe is on the other foot this time though. Illinois hasn't played since that loss at USF, a full two weeks. Nebraska, on the other hand, will be playing on a short week. Also, the Huskers face Wisconsin next week. Note that Nebraska lost its only road game and also that the Huskers, who lost outright vs. Northern Illinois, have yet to win a game by more than 10 points.
The last meeting here saw Illinois score an upset, a 14-13 win in 2015. The Illini also covered at Nebraska last season. With the schedule in favor of the home dog, consider grabbing the points with Illinois.

                      Gracenote
                      Sep 29, 2017

The New York Yankees may have seen their last chance at catching the first-place Boston Red Sox slip away, blowing a three-run lead in a loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday. Assured of the top wild card, the Yankees have to decide how much effort they want to exert to catch Boston when they open a three-game series Friday against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.

Aaron Judge continued his torrid final month, extending his hitting streak to 11 games by belting his American League-leading 51st homer - his 14th in September and one of four hit by New York in Thursday's 9-6 loss. Greg Bird has homered in three straight games and owns four blasts to go along with nine RBIs during a six-game hitting streak for the Yankees, who trail the Red Sox by three games with three to play. Toronto has played its last six games against New York and Boston, going 4-2 and piling up 40 runs while hitting 10 homers against the Red Sox. Outfielder Teoscar Hernandez has swatted six homers and collected 11 RBIs during his six-game hitting streak.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, Sportsnet (Toronto), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Joe Biagini (3-12, 5.34 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (12-12, 4.94)

Biagini made one mistake last time out against the Yankees and it was a biggie, serving up a three-run homer to Bird in the fifth inning that wrapped up a postseason berth for New York. He is winless over his last nine appearances, although he had to settle for a pair of no-decisions in two stellar starts against Baltimore in September. Judge is 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles against Biagini.

Tanaka was hit hard by the Blue Jays in Toronto in his last turn, surrendering three homers among six hits while giving up eight runs over 5 2/3 innings. He lasted only four innings in a no-decision at Toronto on Aug. 9, but beat the Blue Jays with seven innings of one-run ball on July 3 at Yankee Stadium. Josh Donaldson, Kendrys Morales and Ryan Goins are a combined 6-for-65 against Tanaka.

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. Judge belted his 32nd homer at Yankee Stadium, tying Babe Ruth for the most at home in franchise history.

                      2. Hernandez set a franchise rookie record with eight home runs in September.

                      3. Yankees SS Didi Gregorius is 4-for-25 in the last six games, including 1-for-12 against Toronto.

PREDICTION: Yankees 7, Blue Jays 3

Washington Nationals manager Dusty Baker is liberally resting his stars in a bid to keep his team as healthy as possible as it awaits postseason play, and that includes the recently returned Bryce Harper. The 2015 National League MVP looks to draw back into the lineup on Friday as the Nationals host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second contest of their four-game series.

"Nothing. Don't be alarmed. Nothing. Again ... nothing," Baker said in response to reporters asking if something was wrong with Harper, who missed 1 1/2 months with a knee injury before returning to action on Tuesday. Baker also noted that he wants the 24-year-old "to get sharp" before the Nationals face the reigning World Series champion Chicago Cubs in the NL Division Series. Daniel Murphy had three singles in Thursday's 5-4 win to improve to 7-for-15 with a homer, three RBIs and as many runs scored over the last four games for Washington, which has won four of six. Pittsburgh's Josh Bell went deep for the second time in as many games with a two-run homer in the ninth inning on Thursday, giving him six hits and six RBIs in his last three contests.

                          TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh, MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (12-11, 4.23 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (14-4, 2.63)

Cole picked up his first win since Aug. 26 on Saturday, albeit in less-than-stellar fashion. The 27-year-old surrendered five runs and seven hits for the second time in three outings in an 11-6 triumph over St. Louis. Cole has yielded 14 runs in last three starts (16 2/3 innings) and looks to regain the form that saw him allow one run on three hits in a 6-1 rout of Washington on May 17.

Strasburg saw his four-start winning streak stalled as he settled for a no-decision in Saturday's game against the New York Mets. The 29-year-old allowed three runs in that contest after tossing five straight outings (35 innings) in which he did not surrender an earned run. Strasburg picked up the win versus Pittsburgh on May 16 after permitting three runs in six innings.

                          WALK-OFFS

                          1. Starling Marte is riding a nine-game hitting streak, with multi-hit performances in each of his last four.

                          2. Washington (96-63) can set a franchise record in victories if it wins the final three games of the series.

                          3. Pittsburgh OF Andrew McCutchen has two homers, eight RBIs and seven runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

                          PREDICTION: Pirates 3, Nationals 2

While the New York Mets have been an up-and-down organization in recent years, one constant has been their dominance of the Philadelphia Phillies, who host the Mets for a season-ending three-game series starting Friday night. New York has won 11 of 16 meetings this season, is 50-23 against the Phillies since 2014 and has won six straight season series between the National League East rivals.

The Mets enter this encounter on a good note after taking three straight against Atlanta to close out their home schedule - potentially the final games in New York for manager Terry Collins, whose contract expires after this season. Regardless of who is managing the Mets next season, they will hope for a bounce-back effort from struggling right-hander Matt Harvey, who starts the series opener looking for some positives to take into the offseason. The 28-year-old is 9-16 with a 5.71 ERA over the last two injury-ravaged campaigns and will be tendered a contract to return to the team, according to reports. The Phillies took two of three from Washington to begin their six-game homestand.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Matt Harvey (5-6, 6.60 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Ben Lively (3-7, 4.35)

Harvey is 1-3 with an 11.78 ERA in five appearances this month after returning from a shoulder injury. He allowed three runs and four hits - two home runs - over four innings of relief Saturday against Washington. The North Carolina product defeated the Phillies with 5 2/3 solid innings April 11 and he is 7-2 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 career meetings.

Lively dominated the Mets in his first start this month and followed it up with eight solid frames at Washington, but he's struggled ever since. The Florida native surrendered two runs in three innings in a rain-shortened start two turns ago and was rocked for six runs across five innings at Atlanta last Friday. Lively is 1-2 with a 5.04 ERA in five home starts, giving up seven home runs in 25 innings.

                              WALK-OFFS

                              1. Phillies RHP Hector Neris has successfully converted 20 straight saves for a bullpen that owns a 2.52 ERA over a 30-game stretch.

                              2. Mets C Travis d'Arnaud has 12 RBIs in his last eight games.

                              3. New York is 6-1 in Citizens Bank Park this year.

                              PREDICTION: Phillies 6, Mets 5
