-- The previous title for the Sparks came in 20012 when the franchise pulled off the rare repeat.

-- Los Angeles failed to three-peat in 2003 as it was defeated by the now defunct Detroit Shock.

-- Since the 2011 season, Minnesota has won three championships and finished runner-up twice. The victories included two sweeps.

-- The Lynx have alternated titles the last six years and if that trend continues, they’ll be champions this seasons.

              NCAAF

              Friday, September 29

Friday's NCAAF Game of the Day: USC at Washington State

Southern California Trojans at Washington State Cougars (+4.5, 62.5)

USC and Washington State will meet for the first time since 2014 when the No. 16 Cougars host the No. 5 Trojans in a Pac-12 showdown on Friday night. Washington State has won its first four games for the first time since opening the 2001 season with seven straight wins, and USC has won 13 consecutive games, its longest streak since winning 34 in a row from 2003-05.

The Cougars will be playing their fifth straight home game to open the season for the first time in program history, and they've scored at least 31 points in their first four wins. USC hasn't had an easy time in any of its first four victories, but the Trojans are a lot better off than last season, when they opened 1-3, including 0-2 in the Pac-12 after losses to Stanford and Utah. That was the stretch when Sam Darnold took over as starting quarterback and he's gone 13-1 in that role, though he hasn't been as sharp as many expected this season. His completion percentage (67.2) is nearly identical to last season, but he has been intercepted seven times in four games, compared to eight times in 10 games as a starter last season.

              TV:
              10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

              LINE HISTORY:
USC opened as 5.5-point road favorites and by Thursday night that number was bet down to 4.5. The total hit betting boards at 64.5 and is down two full points to 62.5.

              INJURY REPORT:

USC - LB H. Echols (Questionable, Hip), DL J. Lichtenstein (Questionable, Back), DL J. Tufele (Questionable, Back), T N. Smith (Questionable, Knee), CB K. Young (Questionable, Hamstring), WR S. Mitchell (Questionable, Groin), RB R. Jones (Questionable, Ankle), DT J. Fatu (Questionable, Ankle), DE P. Gustin (Out Indefinitely, Bicep), TE D. Imatorbhebhe (Out Indefinitely, Hip), PK M. Brown (Out For Season, Knee), DB J. Lockett (Out For Season, Hip), LB T. Katoa (Out For Season, Knee).

Washington State - OL R. Valencia (Questionable, Undisclosed), LB P.Pelluer (Out For Season).

              ABOUT USC (4-0 SU, 1-3 ATS, 2-2 O/U):
Darnold is running out of healthy receivers at an alarming rate, and the latest to go down is Deontay Burnett, who is fifth in Division I-A in receptions (33) and seventh in receiving yards (462). Burnett has a shoulder injury and didn't practice Monday, leaving his status in doubt against the Cougars. USC is already without its second-best receiver, Steven Mitchell Jr., who missed Saturday's win against California with a groin injury, and he appears further away from returning than Burnett.

              ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS, 2-2 O/U):
Luke Falk is in his fourth year as the starting quarterback for the Cougars and he's off to a strong start, completing 76.9 percent of his passes for 1,378 yards and 14 touchdowns with one interception. His completion percentage is tied for first in the country, his touchdown total is second and his passing yards are fifth. Falk made the first strong impression of his career against the Trojans three years ago when he replaced Connor Halliday, the nation's passing yardage leader at the time who suffered a season-ending broken leg in the first quarter, and completed 38-of-57 passes for 346 and two touchdowns in the 44-17 loss.

              TRENDS:

              * Trojans are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 conference games.
              * Cougars are 0-5 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
              * Under is 4-1 in Trojans last 5 road games.
              * Over is 5-1-1 in Cougars last 7 conference games.
              * Over is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings in Washington State.

              CONSENSUS:
The road favorite Trojans are getting 54 percent of the action from users and the Over is picking up 70 percent of the totals wagers.

"There is little doubt in my mind Duke will win this game outright."

That was the text message I received earlier this week, from someone extremely close to the Miami program.

Now I don't always go off what people tell me, especially if they're close with a program. Of course those folks are usually pumping their own team, and this time they're advocating the Canes will lose. But I still do my own research, as well.

What I see is a 4-0 Duke team that is - yikes! - two wins from becoming bowl eligible.

The Blue Devils own double-digit wins over Northwestern, Baylor and North Carolina. And with momentum in their coffers, they'll be pumped for three home games in the next four.

The run continues with a win over Miami, a team that is 2-0 with wins over, gulp, Bethune-Cookman and Toledo. Now a conference team, and a real showdow, against Duke before heading to play Florida State.

Are the Canes going to be focused?

Take Duke tonight, as it rolls toward an outright win.

                2* DUKE

Can it be? Another loss to Utah State?

I think yes, and so do the wiseguys. Don't let the squares fool you, the line move earlier this week was from the sharps. And so, my free play is with the Utah State Aggies over the BYU Cougars.

A Cougars loss to suddenly dangerous Aggies could be disastrous, and I think Utah State can win this game outright, as the annual game for the Old Wagon Wheel is at rowdy Maverik Stadium. And the natives are restless.

BYU has opened the season 1-3, while Utah State is 2-2, and will be treating this game like it does every year - like its own BCS Championship.

The Aggies demolished Mountain West-foe San Jose State last Saturday, and will be motivated to follow up with a win over struggling BYU tonight.

                  Take the home team.

                    Now about this complimentary winner

My free play for tonight is on USC, which is putting a better football product on the field than the other two teams in Los Angeles - and I mean the Chargers and Rams. Even UCLA is better football to watch.

Tonight the Trojans are up in Pullman, and I like their chances of getting this one done.

Sam Darnold is the real deal, and he should be offended the guy up in Laramie was considered the best quarterback in college football, back in July, when teams were meeting in conference centers for Media Days.

Darnold is a gamer, he plays all four quarters and he will light up Wazzu's secondary. He's thrown nine touchdowns, against seven interceptions. But let's not be fooled by the seven picks. He was trying to make something happen and threw off the back foot with a couple of those. You have to read between the lines and actually watch football games to comprehend what is going on.

Darnold is smarter than his TD-to-interception ratio, and tonight he will prove that.

As for Washington State's offense, ranked 15th in the nation, will be stymied by USC's staunch defense.

                    3* USC

                      MLB | Brewers vs Cardinals
Play on: Brewers -130 at 5Dimes

10* FREE MLB PICK (Brewers -130)
The Cardinals were just eliminated from postseason play by the Cubs last night in gut-wrenching fashion, as St Louis was robbed of a home run that would have tied the game in the bottom of the 11th. Even knowing they can play spoiler to Milwaukee, who is 2-games back of the Rockies for the final Wild Card spot, I don't see the Cardinals coming to the park the least bit interested in this game. This is a team that really thought they had what it takes to get back to the postseason and win this division. While St Louis is hanging their heads, the Brewers are going to be 100% locked in on this game, as they have to sweep here to have any chance of catching Colorado. They got the right starter on the mound to get off on a good note, as they send out Chase Anderson, who is 11-4 with a 2.81 ERA in 24 starts and owns a 2.04 ERA over his last 3 outings. Give me the Brewers -130!

                        MLB | Dodgers vs Rockies
Play on: Rockies +101 at BMaker

Jack's Free Pick Friday: Colorado Rockies +101

The Colorado Rockies would clinch the second wild card spot with a win and a Milwaukee loss tonight. Their magic number is only two games now as they are two games ahead of the Brewers with three to go. It should be a packed house at Coors Field with a playoff-type atmosphere tonight.

The Los Angeles Dodgers don't have much to play for right now as they have already clinched home-field advantage in the National League. I don't expect them to offer much resistance here in trying to stop the Rockies from making the postseason.

Hyun-Jin Ryu has been one of the weak links in the Dodgers' rotation and he's unlikely to get a start in the postseason. He is 5-8 with a 3.58 ERA and 1.351 WHIP in 23 starts. He is also 3-5 with a 4.97 ERA and 1.584 WHIP in eight career starts against Colorado. He has given up 14 runs, 9 earned, in 10 innings over two starts against the Rockies in 2017.

Chad Bettis has held his own at home this season with a 4.07 ERA and 1.192 WHIP over four starts. The Dodgers are 0-9 in Ryu's last nine starts vs. a team with a winning record. The Rockies are 21-8 in Bettis' last 29 home starts. Colorado is 6-0 in its last six vs. a team with a winning % above .600. Bet the Rockies Friday.

We have two starting pitchers headed in opposite directions here. Wade Miley is 0-3 with a 13.94 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in his last three starts, yielding 16 earned runs in 10 1/3 innings. Jake Odorizzi is 2-1 with a 1.72 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in his last three starts for the Rays. Miley gave up 5 earned runs in 6 innings of a 4-5 loss at Tampa Bay on July 25th in his last start against them. Odorizzi pitched 6 innings without allowing an earned run in his last start against Baltimore on September 23rd. Give me the Rays.
