      Preview: Air Force at Navy

      Gracenote
      Oct 4, 2017

Navy hosts Air Force on Saturday in the 50th installment of their Commander-In-Chief's Trophy meeting, which has shifted between the two service academies for the last 20 years with each team winning the round-robin 10 times. The Falcons prevailed last season 28-14 en route to their 20th CIC trophy and second in the last three seasons, leaving Navy with 15 titles -- well ahead of Army's six -- with four retentions since the series was officially recognized in 1972.

While the Midshipmen try for their first 5-0 start since 2004, the Falcons have lost three of their first four games with two coming against ranked teams -- No. 7 Michigan 29-13 on Sept. 16 and No. 21 San Diego State 28-24 on Sept. 23. “Same old Air Force. Always a good program. They have played everyone tough,” Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo told reporters. “We know the players because a lot them we recruited. We’re going to have our hands full.” The Midshipmen threw an uncharacteristic 30 passes in last year's meeting, but could revert back to a dominating ground attack that has produced 400 yards per game this season -- the most in the country -- and face the 26th-worst run defense nationally among the 129 FBS teams. Navy has attempted 29 passes in 2017 while the Falcons have chucked it 47 times with the schools combining for a 44.7 percent success rate.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBSSN. LINE: Navy -7.5

ABOUT AIR FORCE (1-3): The Falcons own the No. 10 rushing game in the country at 274.8 yards per game with quarterback Arion Worthman at the controls. The junior has carried a team-most 93 times, averaging only 2.6 yards per carry with three touchdowns. Senior running back Timothy McVey (6.6 yards per 42 carries, three TDs) and junior running back Parker Wilson (5.2 yards per 34 carries) have combined with Worthman to record nearly 70 percent of the rushing attempts for an attack that has seen 19 players carry the ball.

ABOUT NAVY (4-0): Junior quarterback Zach Abey is the dominant force, averaging 5.6 yards per 117 carries -- representing 45 percent of their rushing attempts -- with a team-high seven touchdowns. Abey's handoffs mostly go to senior fullback Chris High, who averages 4.8 yards on 60 carries with a TD, and explosive sophomore running back Malcolm Perry (9.5 yards per 23 carries, two touchdowns), who became the first Midshipmen player to record consecutive 100-yard games last week since 2009. Senior wide receiver Tyler Carmona has four catches for 188 yards and two TDs, including one for 74 yards.

      EXTRA POINTS

      1. Air Force has scored in a team-record 302 consecutive games, the third-longest streak in the nation behind Florida (365) and TCU (310), and fifth-longest in NCAA history.

      2. Abey is third nationally at 164 yards rushing per game -- more than 33 yards ahead of the next quarterback (Georgia Tech's Taquon Marshall, 130.8).

      3. Air Force leads the series 29-20, splitting the last four meetings.

PREDICTION: Navy 28, Air Force 21

          Preview: West Virginia at TCU

          Gracenote
          Oct 5, 2017

Two of the most productive offenses in the nation will go head to head when No. 10 TCU hosts No. 23 West Virginia in a Big 12 game on Saturday. The Mountaineers are second in the FBS at 594.8 total yards a game and TCU is No. 17 at 497 yards, and both teams should be well rested coming off their bye weeks.

The Horned Frogs should have had an especially pleasant week off after knocking off then-No. 7 Oklahoma State two weeks ago in Stillwater, Okla., rushing for 238 yards on 52 carries in the 44-31 victory. The Mountaineers have struggled against the run, giving up 367 rushing yards on 50 carries in a 56-34 win against Kansas on Sept. 23, dropping them to 114th among 129 FBS teams in run defense. Expect a lot of carries early on from TCU sophomore running back Darius Anderson, who is coming off a career-high 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns against Oklahoma State. What makes the Horned Frogs especially tough is that they also have a solid quarterback in senior Kenny Hill, who has been less mistake-prone this season compared to the past.

          TV: 3:30 p.m., FOX Sports 1. LINE: TCU -13.5.

ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA (3-1, 1-0 Big 12): The Mountaineers are in good shape with their running game as well, thanks to senior running back Justin Crawford, who has hit the 100-yard rushing mark in all four games this season and scored six touchdowns in the last three. Crawford, in his second season with West Virginia after transferring from Northwest Mississippi Community College, tried to play with a sprained ankle last season against TCU and finished with minus-two rushing yards on one carry in the 34-10 victory, so he should be extra motivated this time around. Kennedy McKoy gives the Mountaineers a solid second option in the run game, and he's also coming off a strong performance against Kansas, rushing for 105 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.

ABOUT TCU (4-0, 1-0): Hill once replaced Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, and then promptly broke his school record by passing for 511 yards in his first career start, a 52-28 victory against higher-ranked South Carolina, ending the Gamecocks' 18-game home win streak. Hill hasn't been asked to throw the ball 60 times for TCU, but he's made the most of his drop-backs, completing 72.7 percent of his passes for 965 yards and nine touchdowns with three interceptions. If he has a favorite receiver, he hasn't shown it yet, as five different receivers for the Horned Frogs have from nine to 14 catches, and 101 to 151 receiving yards.

          EXTRA POINTS

          1. TCU and West Virginia each lost 12 of their first 18 games in the Big 12, but the Horned Frogs have since gone 44-24 and the Mountaineers 39-29.

          2. The Horned Frogs have 21 seniors on scholarship compared to eight last season.

          3. TCU leads the nation in third-down conversion percentage at 63.2.

PREDICTION: TCU 42, West Virginia 38

              Preview: Minnesota at Purdue

              Gracenote
              Oct 5, 2017

A pair of Big Ten squads still looking for their first conference victories of the season will square off when Minnesota travels to face Purdue on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Gophers are coming off a tough home loss to Maryland, while the Boilermakers had a bye last weekend after dropping their league opener to Michigan

Minnesota is averaging over 30 points a contest while holding opponents to just 13.8 per game, but it will have its hands full with a Purdue squad that is putting up just under 30 points an outing. The Gophers' offense is balanced, averaging 180.8 rushing yards and 187 passing yards, with quarterback Conor Rhoda (685 passing yards, three TDs) at the controls after coach P.J. Fleck juggled signal callers earlier in the season. Boilermakers quarterback David Blough has been accurate with the football, completing 70 percent of his passes, but he also hasn't taken many chances, averaging just 11.2 yards per completion. Purdue's defense has improved this year in many areas, including turnover margin, where the Boilermakers are a plus-4 on the season after being minus-17 last year.

              TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2. LINE: Purdue -4

ABOUT MINNESOTA (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten): The Golden Gophers' running game has struggled of late, but thoughts around the team are that the return of suspended quarterback Demry Croft, who has sat out the last two contests, will provide a boost. Croft rushed for 96 yards on just seven carries in the first two games of the season, coming in for Rhoda, who Fleck prefers to keep in the pocket as much as possible in order to keep him healthy. Minnesota rushed for just 80 yards on 31 carries in the loss to Maryland, so, even though he's listed as the third quarterback on this week's depth chart, Croft could come into the game Saturday to try to give the ground attack another option and a little more flash.

ABOUT PURDUE (2-2, 0-1): Purdue's depth on the defensive side of the ball will be put to the test this week -- at least in the first half -- as starting free safety Jacob Thieneman and starting middle linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley will be out because of targeting penalties against Michigan. The losses are significant, as Thieneman is considered the defense's "quarterback" because he calls the defenses and Bentley is the team's leading tackler with 29 stops. Walk-on Antonio Blackmon is expected to get more time in Thieneman's absence, while senior Garrett Hudson will likely take Bentley's spot in the starting lineup.

              EXTRA POINTS

              1. Minnesota will likely be without its two starting safeties this week, as Antoine Winfield Jr. is slowed by a left hamstring injury and Duke McGhee remains suspended because of a violation of team rules.

              2. Purdue is one of just 12 teams in the country that is perfect in the red zone this season, scoring on all 15 trips.

              3. The Golden Gophers have won the last four matchups between the teams, though three of those were in Minneapolis. Purdue has won nine of the last 11 meetings played in Ross-Ade Stadium.

              PREDICTION: Purdue 27, Minnesota 23

                  Preview: LSU at Florida

                  Oct 4, 2017

LSU is officially in crisis mode after last week's home loss to Troy, but the Tigers don't have much time to figure things out. No longer ranked for the first time in a year, LSU visits No. 20 Florida on Saturday in SEC action.

The Tigers had won 49 straight games against visiting non-conference opponents and were favored by three touchdowns against the Trojans before suffering another embarrassing effort under coach Ed Orgeron. "At the end of the day, it was who wanted it more," said LSU linebacker Devin White. "You could tell they wanted it more." That's not a good sign for LSU, which must now bounce back against a Florida team that is already 3-0 in the conference, albeit with a major asterisk after last week's win. Gators starting quarterback Luke Del Rio suffered a broken collarbone in the 14-point victory against Vanderbilt and will miss the remainder of the season.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: Florida -6.5

ABOUT LSU (3-2, 0-1 SEC): The Tigers' lead back is Darrel Williams, who was held out of the end zone for the first time this season in last weekend's defeat despite a season-high 17 carries. Danny Etling threw two touchdowns for the second straight game as the squad continued to play without standout running back Derrius Guice (knee), who is questionable for this weekend. Devin White (13 tackles) and Christian LaCouture (two sacks) were among the defensive standouts last week for LSU, which has allowed an average of 29 points in its last three games.

ABOUT FLORIDA (3-1, 3-0): The Gators posted back-to-back wins in dramatic fashion before pulling away late against Vanderbilt after Del Rio was lost for the season. "Eventually we're going to break the wall down, man. We're going to be a really good team," said Feleipe Franks, who replaced Del Rio and went 10-of-14 for 185 yards in the most efficient effort of his freshman campaign. Malik Davis and Lamical Perine ran for a combined five touchdowns to take some of the pressure off Franks, who entered his name into Gators lore last month with a 63-yard game-winning TD pass against Tennessee as time expired.

                  EXTRA POINTS

                  1. Eleven different Gators have caught a 10-plus yard pass this season.

                  2. Florida won 16-10 at LSU last season, stuffing Guice from the 1 in the final seconds.

                  3. LSU WR D.J. Chark has a rushing score, but he is still seeking his first receiving TD despite 16 catches for 338 yards - both team highs.

                  PREDICTION: Florida 23, LSU 20

                      Preview: Maryland at Ohio State

                      Gracenote
                      Oct 4, 2017

Ninth-ranked Ohio State is beginning to find its best form on both sides of the ball and looks to continue moving forward when improving Maryland pays a visit for a Big Ten matchup Saturday afternoon. The Buckeyes have scored 148 points over the last three games since the loss to Oklahoma, capped by a 56-0 victory at Rutgers last week, and senior quarterback J.T. Barrett has 10 touchdowns passes without an interception in that stretch.

“Yeah, we’re finally connecting,” Ohio State’s junior wide receiver Johnnie Dixon told reporters. “We’re getting our communication and things down. We’re getting on a roll for sure.” Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, who will coach his 200th collegiate game (169-30), faces a former assistant for the second straight week as Maryland’s D.J. Durkin worked under him at both Bowling Green and Florida. Durkin’s Terrapins rebounded from a surprising home loss to Central Florida by winning 31-24 at Minnesota last week to open its Big Ten slate as third-string quarterback Max Bortenschlager threw two touchdown passes. “It’s going to be an unbelievable opportunity this weekend,” Durkin, whom Meyer calls one of the top coaches to ever be on his staff, told reporters. “This is a great football team that we’re playing. … They’re extremely talented, not any holes anywhere on the roster and they’re very well-coached. Our guys know the task at hand.”

TV: 4 p.m. ET, Fox. LINE: Ohio State -30.5

ABOUT MARYLAND (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten): Bortenschlager, a sophomore, completed 18-of-28 passes for 154 yards and also ran for a score against Minnesota in his first start after the Terrapins’ top two quarterbacks - Kasim Hill and Tyrrell Pigrome - went down with season-ending knee injuries. The biggest threat is junior wide-out DJ Moore, who leads the Big Ten in receptions (30), receiving yards (403) and receiving touchdowns (five) while junior running back Ty Johnson has rushed for 411 yards (8.9 per carry). Senior linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. led the team in tackles the last two seasons and tops the Terrapins again with 29, including 2.5 sacks.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (4-1, 2-0): Barrett has been outstanding the last three games while completing 52-of-73 passes and boasts 13 TD strikes with just one interception overall while throwing for scores to nine different receivers. Dixon leads that group with four TD receptions on just eight catches and the Buckeyes’ rushing attack is fully healthy with freshman J.K. Dobbins (573 yards, three touchdowns) and sophomore Mike Weber, who ran for three scores against Rutgers after struggling with hamstring issues. The Ohio State defense has allowed fewer than 100 passing yards in each of the last three games after averaging 403 against the first two.

                      EXTRA POINTS

                      1. Moore is the first Maryland receiver with five TD catches through four games since Torrey Smith accomplished the feat in 2010.

                      2. The Buckeyes are second in the nation with 45 tackles for loss, including 22 in the last two weeks, and sophomore DL Nick Bosa leads the way with eight overall.

                      3. The Terrapins were tied 21-21 in the third quarter during their last trip to Columbus (2015) before losing 49-28 and dropped a 62-3 decision last year at home.

PREDICTION: Ohio State 45, Maryland 17

                              Preview: Arkansas at South Carolina

After a much-needed reboot last week, Austin Allen and the rest of the Arkansas offense looks to even its record in conference play as it takes on host South Carolina in an SEC tussle. Allen racked up a season-high 264 yards and three touchdown passes in last week's 42-24 win over New Mexico State, erasing the sting of a narrow loss to Texas A&M.

Head coach Bret Bielema admitted that his team was furious after dropping a 50-43 decision to the Aggies, and took their collective frustrations out on New Mexico's Aggies, piling up nearly 500 yards of total offense. "I think our guys knew going into that game that we could win," Bielema told reporters afterward. "I think that was the chippiness, the anger, even from a coach. You do all this work ... why not put ourselves in a position to be talked about on a bigger scale?" The Gamecocks are coming off their own seven-point defeat at the hands of Texas A&M, and were equally disappointed after failing to sufficiently protect quarterback Jake Bentley, who was sacked seven times. "At the end of the day you've got to block the pass rushers," head coach Will Muschamp said after the game.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: South Carolina +2

ABOUT ARKANSAS (2-2, 0-1 SEC): Allen accumulated more than 3,400 passing yards last season but scuffled mightily to start the season, throwing for just 273 yards over his first two games before breaking out with 229 in the loss to Texas A&M. The run game remains the best part of the offense, with Devwah Whaley, Chase Hayden and David Williams combining for 698 rushing yards and 10 scores; each player has between 40 and 50 carries on the season. Junior WR Jonathan Nance hauled in a pair of touchdown passes in the victory over New Mexico State, and has four receiving scores in his past three games.
ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (3-2, 1-2): Bentley is doing his best to keep the Gamecocks competitive - ranking second in the conference in passing yards (1,257) and fourth in touchdown passes (nine) - but has already been sacked 15 times. Pass protection isn't the only area in which the South Carolina offensive line has faltered; the team is averaging a dreadful 3.0 yards per carry on 139 attempts - the third-worst rate in the SEC - and its 84.6 rushing yards per game ranks 122nd out of 129 FBS teams. Wide receiver Bryan Edwards sits fourth in the conference in receiving yards but is still looking for his first touchdown of the season.

                              EXTRA POINTS

                              1. South Carolina has just four rushing touchdowns in four games after finishing with 20 a season ago.

                              2. Bentley has been sacked 39 times in 12 career games with the Gamecocks.

                              3. The Razorbacks have scored touchdowns on 83.3 percent of red-zone visits, tied for the best mark in the SEC.

PREDICTION: Arkansas 31, South Carolina 27
