      Where: TDECU Stadium, Houston, Texas

      Preview: SMU at Houston
      Gracenote
      Oct 4, 2017

SMU will take its high-scoring offense to in-state rival Houston on Saturday in a key American Athletic Conference matchup. The Mustangs have won back-to-back games by a combined 44 points and rank third nationally with a scoring average of 48.2 points per game.

Quarterback Ben Hicks - who is fourth nationally with 14 passing touchdowns - and the Mustangs will get a test from a Houston defense that is allowing 14.8 points. Houston may be without star tackle Ed Oliver (sprained left MCL), who is listed as day-to-day after leaving in the first half of the win at Temple. "Once he gets the brace on and starts getting more active with it, we'll have to evaluate it throughout the week," coach Major Applewhite told the media Monday. The SMU defense, meanwhile, leads the nation with 21 sacks while the Cougars have allowed four.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network. LINE: Houston -9.5.

ABOUT SMU (4-1, 1-0 AAC): Hicks (89-of-164, 1,275 yards, three INT) is coming off his best game of the year after a 27-of-37 performance for 280 yards and four TDs against Connecticut. Trey Quinn (37 catches for 431 yards, four TDs) and Courtland Sutton (20 catches, 329 yards, FBS-best seven TDs) give the Mustangs a pair of explosive targets. Defensive end Justin Lawler (30 tackles, eight tackles for loss, team-high six sacks) was named the AAC defensive player of the week after recording four sacks and a blocked field goal last week.

ABOUT HOUSTON (3-1, 1-0): Kyle Postma (36-of-54, 371 yards, one INT, two TDs) started in place of Kyle Allen (80-of-104, 771 yards, four INTs, four TDs) last week and is listed atop this week's depth chart, although Applewhite won't name a starter until closer to the game-time. Linell Bonner (32 catches, 300 yards, three TDs) and Steven Dunbar (24 catches, 290 yards) lead a talented receiver corps while D'Eriq King has 12 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown to go with a rushing touchdown in two games. Linebacker Matthew Adams leads the conference with 10.8 tackles while safety Khalil Williams has a team-best seven tackles for loss.

      EXTRA POINTS

      1. SMU is one of two FBS schools -- joining AAC foe Central Florida -- to score at least 36 points in every game this season.

      2. SMU's Kyran Mitchell (3), Tyeson Neals (3) and Mason Gentry (2) also have multiple sacks.

      3. Sophomore DT Aymiel Fleming (three tackles this season) got the most playing time of his career in place of Oliver last week.

      PREDICTION: Houston 38, SMU 31

          Preview: Kansas State at Texas
          Gracenote
          Oct 5, 2017

First-year Texas coach Tom Herman came in with a reputation as one of college football's top offensive minds after winning the Broyles Award as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Ohio State's 2014 national championship team. But it's been a much-improved defense that is carrying the Longhorns into Saturday night's Big 12 contest with visiting Kansas State.

Texas allowed an average of 31.5 points and and 448 yards per game in 2016 and was embarrassed by Maryland, 51-41, in Herman's Longhorn head coaching debut on Sept. 2. But in three games since that debacle, including a better-than-expected 27-24 double overtime loss at Sam Darnold-led USC, Texas is allowing an average of just 11.3 points and 298.3 yards per game and has held each opponent to less than 100 yards rushing, including Iowa State to just 10 yards on the ground in a 17-7 victory last week. That defense figures to be put to the test again this week by a physical Kansas State offense that is averaging 37.5 points and 229 yards rushing. "I'm really proud of the way that our defense has played the last three weeks," Herman said. "They're certainly playing at a level that we can certainly win with."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Texas -7

ABOUT KANSAS STATE (3-1, 1-0 Big 12): Senior quarterback Jesse Ertz is off to a strong start for the Wildcats, rushing for a team-high 332 yards and three touchdowns while also passing for 706 yards and five more scores. He had 78 yards rushing and two touchdowns to go along with 171 passing yards and another TD to highlight Kansas State's 24-21 win over the Longhorns last season. The defense, led by linebacker Trent Tanking (26 tackles) and tackle Will Geary (three sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss), ranks 15th nationally in scoring (15.0 points allowed) and 21st in total defense (308.5 yards).

ABOUT TEXAS (2-2, 1-0): Shane Buechele, who returned to the starting lineup at Iowa State after missing two games with a shoulder injury, is expected to start again at quarterback despite wearing a walking boot earlier in the week for a sprained ankle. He passed for 171 yards and connected with 11 different receivers in the Iowa State win despite playing behind a thin offensive line that is without All-American left tackle Connor Williams (sprained MCL, torn meniscus, sprained PCL) for the immediate future. The The defense, led by nose tackle Poona Ford, linebacker Malik Jefferson (team-high 33 tackles) and cornerback DeShon Elliott (four interceptions in last two games), has already forced eight turnovers this season, including seven interceptions.

          EXTRA POINTS

          1. Kansas State leads the series with Texas, 10-7, but is just 3-6 in Austin.

          2. Texas already has five non-offensive touchdowns this season after having none in 2016 and leads the NCAA with four defensive TDs.

          3. Kansas State has won its last six games against teams from Texas including five major FBS programs (Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor).

PREDICTION: Texas 21, Kansas State 14

              Gracenote
              Oct 4, 2017

No. 19 Virginia Tech has a good opportunity to rebound from its first loss of the season when it visits Boston College for an ACC tilt Saturday night. The Hokies were outclassed by No. 2 Clemson 31-17 last weekend, outgaining the Tigers by 10 yards but committing each of the game's three turnovers.

"We were prepping to play a good team and practicing hard, we all expected to execute," sophomore defensive tackle Tim Settle told reporters. "And the fact we didn't is kind of a low blow. Our motto is the next game, 1-0. So we've just got to move forward." The Hokies could draw upon their recent meetings with the Eagles, including a 49-0 rout at home last year and a 26-10 win at Chestnut Hill in 2015. Boston College lost 34-7 to Clemson two weeks ago to finish a difficult stretch of games before returning home to knock off Central Michigan by a 28-8 margin last week. Jon Hilliman scored three times for the Eagles, who are playing under the lights on a Saturday night at home for the first time since 2014.

              TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, ESPN2. LINE: Virginia Tech -16.5

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (4-1, 0-1 ACC): Freshman Josh Jackson threw multiple interceptions for the first time in his young career against Clemson but he did manage to complete at least 65 percent of his passes for the third straight game. Jackson is one of five rushers to amass between 133 and 191 yards and one of seven to find the end zone for the ACC's fifth-ranked ground attack (192.6 yards). Senior Cam Phillips is second in the conference in receiving yards (597) and needs five catches to surpass Isaiah Ford (210) and establish a school record.

ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (2-3, 0-2): Hilliman did find the end zone three times but often was outshined by rising freshman AJ Dillon, who broke out for a personal-best 120 yards on 25 carries. Coach Steve Addazio said that Dillon "is doing really great" after he was forced from the Central Michigan game due to a big hit. The Eagles are 12th in the ACC in yards per carry (3.6) and could use some improvement to assist redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Brown, who has totaled just 218 yards on 51 passes over the last two weeks.

              EXTRA POINTS

              1. Hokies K Joey Slye is 8-for-14 on field goals this year but needs seven points to overtake K Shayne Graham (371) as the program's all-time leading scorer.

              2. Eagles FS Lukas Denis is tied for the FBS lead with five interceptions after recording two last week.

              3. Boston College was held to 124 total yards and completed 9-of-29 passes in last year's blowout loss at Virginia Tech.

PREDICTION: Virginia Tech 27, Boston College 14

Top-ranked Alabama has looked more than imposing over the past two weeks and aims for another convincing victory when it visits Texas A&M on Saturday in SEC play. The Crimson Tide routed Vanderbilt and Ole Miss by a cumulative 125-3 over the past two games while averaging 645 yards of total offense.

Even never-satisfied coach Nick Saban complimented his players for the back-to-back shellackings but he also is cautioning his squad that it needs to be supremely prepared for the Aggies, who have won four straight games. "This is by far, I think, the strongest team we've played to this point all the way around," Saban told reporters of a slate that began with Florida State. "It's certainly going to be a real challenge for us and test for us being a division game on the road." Texas A&M has responded well from its season-opening loss against UCLA -- when it blew a 34-point lead -- and coach Kevin Sumlin insisted his club won't deviate from the formula against the red-hot Crimson Tide. "Our emphasis and what we're doing here is not going to change because of the opponent," Sumlin said at a press conference. "We've got goals every week internally that we're trying to reach, and this team responds to that by getting a little bit better every week. ... Whether or not that will be good enough, we'll see."

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Alabama -26.5

ABOUT ALABAMA (5-0, 2-0 SEC): Sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts has gone 169 passes without throwing an interception dating back to last season -- the third-longest streak in school history -- but is a bigger force with his legs as he has a team-best 461 rushing yards. Junior receiver Calvin Ridley is having another solid campaign with 24 receptions for 322 yards and his 185 career catches are third most in school history behind Amari Cooper (228 from 2012-14) and D.J. Hall (194 from 2004-07). Senior cornerback Levi Wallace, who has a team-best three interceptions, was the SEC Defensive Player of the Week after picking off two passes and returning one for a touchdown in the 66-3 annihilation of Ole Miss.

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (4-1, 2-0): The Aggies have already racked up 20 sacks -- led by 5.5 from junior defensive end Landis Durham -- and are receiving solid play from senior safety Armani Watts (team leader with three interceptions and 37 tackles) and junior weakside linebacker Otaro Alaka (team-best seven tackles for loss). Junior gamebreaking receiver Christian Kirk is only averaging 11.5 yards per catch while hauling in 23 passes (including four scores) but has been superb with a 30.2 kickoff return average to go with one touchdown. Freshman quarterback Kellen Mond has passed for 808 yards and six touchdowns against two interceptions while sophomore running back Trayveon Williams (384 yards) hasn't maintained his season-opening dominance when he rushed for 202 yards against UCLA.

                  EXTRA POINTS

                  1. Alabama holds a 7-2 series edge and has won the past four meetings.

                  2. Crimson Tide senior DE Da'Shawn Hand (knee) will miss the contest, while sophomore CB Trevon Diggs (foot) is questionable.

                  3. The Aggies allowed just 23 rushing yards and had seven sacks in last Saturday's 24-17 win over South Carolina.

                  PREDICTION: Alabama 48, Texas A&M 20

                      Oct 5, 2017

Kentucky hopes to keep its SEC East title hopes alive when it hosts struggling Missouri on Saturday. The Wildcats have won their last two meetings with the Tigers, including a 35-21 road victory a year ago.

The Wildcats’ division title hopes took a hit with a heartbreaking 28-27 loss to Florida on Sept. 23, but they have a favorable schedule over the next five weeks. If Kentucky can run the table during that stretch, its Nov. 18 contest at Georgia could have title implications. Missouri is making its first road trip of the season and hopes to have more luck than it has had at home. The Tigers have had two weeks to try to figure things out since being routed 51-14 by Auburn for their third straight loss - a slide during which they’ve been outscored 117-30.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: Kentucky -10

ABOUT MISSOURI (1-3, 0-2 SEC): The Tigers average 445.2 total yards per game, although that total is skewed by a record-setting effort in a season-opening win over Missouri State. The offense has mostly sputtered since then despite returning most of the key players to a unit than came on strong at the end of last season, including quarterback Drew Lock. However, the Tigers’ biggest concerns are on defense, as they’ve allowed 452.5 total yards and 40 points per contest.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (4-1, 1-1): The Wildcats have the third-best run defense in the nation, allowing just 74 yards per game after limiting Eastern Michigan to 13 last week. They’ve also been opportunistic, ranking third in the SEC and 11th in the nation with a plus-7 turnover margin. Running back Benny Snell Jr. is Kentucky’s biggest threat on offense, and he could be in line for a big performance against a Missouri defense that allows 194.8 rushing yards per game.

                      EXTRA POINTS

                      1. Kentucky WR Garrett Johnson has 127 career receptions and needs two to move into the top 10 on the school’s all-time list.

                      2. Missouri WR J’Mon Moore has caught a pass in 21 straight games, the fourth-longest active streak in the SEC.

                      3. Kentucky K Austin MacGinnis (298) needs eight points to pass Lones Seiber as the leading scorer in program history.

                      PREDICTION: Kentucky 30, Missouri 23

Seventh-ranked Michigan looks to keep its perfect record intact when it hosts Michigan State in the battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy on Saturday. The Wolverines have won their first four games of the season, including a 28-10 victory against Purdue, but will be without starting quarterback Wilton Speight, who suffered a neck injury against the Boilermakers, and John O'Korn hopes to rise to the occasion by leading Michigan to back-to-back wins against the Spartans for the first time since 2006-07.

"John's done a fantastic job ever since he got here," Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters. "He's acquitted himself very well including coming off the bench and leading our team to a victory against Purdue." Michigan State bounced back from a disappointing 38-18 home loss to No. 22 Notre Dame by shutting down Iowa 17-10. The Spartans, who held the Hawkeyes to just 231 total yards, are hoping for a repeat performance against Michigan's struggling offensive line, as they strive for their fifth win in their last six visits to Ann Arbor. "When you play in a rivalry game, it's just not another football game, it means more," Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio told reporters. "My goal when I came here was to make it a rivalry and I think it's a rivalry so we'll leave it at that."

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten): Wide receiver Felton Davis was named the Big Ten's Co-Offensive Player of the Week after hauling in a career-high nine passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Iowa. Brian Lewerke threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns to go along with another 42 on the ground to take his season total to 248 rushing yards, which is second best among Big Ten quarterbacks. Senior running back Gerald Holmes, who has rushed for 1,120 yards and 13 touchdowns in his career, and safety Matt Morrissey were named the team captains for Saturday's clash.

ABOUT MICHIGAN (4-0, 1-0): O'Korn came off the bench to replace Speight, who will miss "multiple weeks," according to Harbaugh, and put on an impressive display as he completed 18-of-26 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown in the win against Purdue. Defensive end Chase Winovich continues to terrorize opposing backfields as he registered eight tackles, including 3.5 for loss, and 2.5 sacks against the Boilermakers to give him five sacks on the season, which ranks second nationally. Defensive back Nate Johnson was dismissed from the team on Wednesday after he was charged with domestic violence.

                              EXTRA POINTS

                              1. Michigan State has won seven of the last nine meetings with Michigan.

                              2. The Wolverines lead the nation in total defense (203.3 yards) and sacks (4.5) per game.

                              3. Saturday will mark the first night game in the 110 editions of the rivalry.

PREDICTION: Michigan 27, Michigan State 17
