      Preview: Senators at Flames

      Gracenote
      Oct 12, 2017

Jaromir Jagr is one game into his 24th NHL season and will play his first home contest in Canada when the Calgary Flames host the Ottawa Senators on Friday night. The league's No. 2 career leading scorer, Jagr made his season debut Wednesday in Calgary's 4-3 overtime win at Los Angeles -- the Flames' third straight victory.

Signed to a one-year contract earlier this month, the 45-year-old Jagr acknowledged he didn't feel great in his Calgary debut, but he's thrilled with what he's seen from his new team. "The expectation is very high, and it should be," Jagr said. "There's a lot of great offensive players. The defense is fantastic. ... It's up to us how far we can go." Ottawa picked up its first victory in the opener of its three-game road trip through Western Canada and made a bit of history in the process. The Senators, who are still missing injured captain Erik Karlsson, outlasted Vancouver in a shootout 3-2 and became the first team to start a season with three consecutive shootouts.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, RDS2, TSN5 (Ottawa), Sportsnet Flames (Calgary)

ABOUT THE SENATORS (1-0-2): While Karlsson remained in Ottawa, the Senators could get a boost along the blue line with the possibility of Johnny Oduya joining the team if he receives medical clearance. Craig Anderson has been in net for each of the first three games, but coach Guy Boucher said backup Mike Condon will get a start this weekend in the back-to-back against Calgary and Edmonton. Ottawa is 0-for-16 on the power play but has killed off all nine penalties.

ABOUT THE FLAMES (3-1-0): After being held off the scoresheet in the season opener, Johnny Gaudreau has seven points in the past three games after setting up a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in Calgary's win at Los Angeles. Veteran Mike Smith has won three straight decisions and was outstanding in the two-game sweep of Anaheim and Los Angeles, turning aside 85 shots. “Our goalie, in my mind, has got us the last two, for sure," coach Glen Gulutzan said.

      OVERTIME

      1. Jagr has feasted on Ottawa in his career with 44 goals and 90 points in 78 games.

      2. F Mike Hoffman leads the Senators with 11 shots but also is a team-worst minus-4.

      3. Calgary swept the two-game season series against Ottawa last season, including a 5-2 victory at home.

      PREDICTION: Flames 4, Senators 2

          Preview: Ducks at Avalanche

          Gracenote
          Oct 13, 2017

The Colorado Avalanche won three of their first four games in 2016-17 before they were snowed under in the midst of what quickly became a lost season with an NHL-worst 48 points. Intent on preventing history from repeating itself, the Avalanche look to continue a strong start to this campaign on Friday when they host the Anaheim Ducks at the Pepsi Center.

Former top overall pick Nail Yakupov scored three goals in Colorado's home-and-home sweep of Boston, while Matt Duchene collected three points (one goal, two assists) in what he admitted was a fun performance in the Avalanche's 6-3 win on Wednesday. "We said it on the bench and we talked about at the end of the game, we have fun with this one but it's the same thing on Friday night," the 26-year-old Duchene said. "We want to come out against Anaheim and do the same thing. You have to have a short memory when you're winning and when you're losing." The Ducks are taking their show on the road for the first time this season after closing out a four-game homestand with a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders. Patrick Eaves returned from a three-game absence due to a lower-body injury to score the eventual game-winning goal.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NHL.TV, Prime Ticket (Anaheim), Altitude (Colorado)

ABOUT THE DUCKS (2-1-1): Andrew Cogliano scored and set up a goal against the Islanders to increase his point total to five (two goals, three assists). Rickard Rakell has seen a significant uptick in ice time this season with his move to that of a full-time center, as he's averaging 22 minutes compared to 17-plus in 2016-17. "I would say that he’s still a work in progress," coach Randy Carlyle told the Orange County Register. "Raks shows that in some situations how dynamic he can be and in other situations, I think there's still a learning curve to be around the puck more and be stronger on it in certain situations."
ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (3-1-0): Jonathan Bernier has been tabbed to face his former club, with which he stepped up last season in lieu of injuries to John Gibson and posted a 21-7-4 mark and recorded at least a point in 14 of his last 15 starts (12-1-2). Facing a former team is nothing new for the Quebec native, as he made 35 saves in a 4-1 loss to New Jersey last Saturday. Fellow goaltender Semyon Varlamov will get the start in Dallas on Saturday as Colorado braces for the first of 11 back-to-back games this season.

          OVERTIME

          1. Colorado D Sven Andrighetto recorded his second consecutive two-point performance with a pair of goals versus Boston on Wednesday.

          2. Anaheim placed F Ondrej Kase (head) on injured reserve Thursday, with the move retroactive to Tuesday.

          3. Avalanche F Tyson Jost was limited to an off-ice workout on Thursday, with coach Jared Bednar telling reporters that he was unsure if the rookie would play versus the Ducks.

          PREDICTION: Avalanche 3, Ducks 2

Preview: Red Wings at Golden Knights

              Gracenote
              Oct 13, 2017

James Neal has been everything advertised, and then some, for the Vegas Golden Knights during their record-setting start to the season. The veteran forward looks to continue his scorching pace as the Golden Knights attempt to remain undefeated when they host the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.

Neal has scored five of his team's nine goals, including two in Tuesday's 5-2 triumph over Arizona in its home opener as Vegas became the first club in NHL history to begin its inaugural season with three straight victories. The 30-year-old Neal, who has eclipsed the 20-goal plateau in each of his first nine campaigns, is the first player since Philadelphia's Brian Propp in 1982-83 to net the winning tally in each of his team's first three games in a season. Detroit posted a 4-2 victory at Arizona on Thursday to improve to 2-1-0 on its four-game road trip. Captain Henrik Zetterberg forged a tie in the final minute of the second period and Luke Glendening scored a short-handed goal with 3:24 remaining to snap a tie while defenseman Mike Green notched a pair of assists to grab a share of the league scoring lead at eight points.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Vegas)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (3-1-0): All eight of Green's points have been assists, tying him with Washington's Evgeny Kuznetsov for first in the NHL in that category. The blue-liner, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Thursday, is well on his way to his best season in Detroit as he registered 22 assists and 36 points in 72 games last campaign after collecting 35 points over 74 contests in his first season with the club in 2015-16. Fellow defenseman Niklas Kronwall made his season debut Thursday, posting a minus-1 rating while seeing 17 minutes, 27 seconds of ice time on 26 shifts after missing the first three games because of back and groin injuries.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (3-0-0): Neal's tenure with Vegas got off to a rough start as he underwent hand surgery a month after being plucked from Nashville's roster in the expansion draft and was unable to participate at the start of training camp. But he has been an offensive force over the franchise's first three games, scoring both goals in a season-opening 2-1 victory at Dallas, tallying in overtime at Arizona for a 2-1 triumph the following night and netting a pair versus the Coyotes three days later. "I'm just surprised I was able to play (against Dallas), just having surgery so late in the summer. I wasn't sure if I was going to be ready," Neal, who joined Quebec's Real Cloutier as the only players to record five goals in the first three contests of a team's existence since expansion began in 1967-68, told NHL.com.

              OVERTIME

              1. Golden Knights G Marc-Andre Fleury has allowed only four goals on 107 shots over the club's first three games.

              2. Red Wings D Danny DeKeyser missed Thursday's contest with a lower-body injury he suffered two nights earlier at Dallas.

              3. Vegas LW Tomas Nosek, who recorded one goal in 17 games with Detroit over the last two seasons, netted the first home tally in franchise history Tuesday.

PREDICTION: Golden Knights 3, Red Wings 2

My free play is on a College Football side for Saturday, as I like the Miami, Florida Hurricanes over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. I will have a later free play for Saturday, too, and it will be available when this complimentary winner kicks off.

I don't trust the Jackets in this spot, with Miami looking to strengthen its spot atop the Coastal Division in the ACC, and laying a rather low number. Yes, the Yellow Jackets are a dangerous team at 3-1 and some believe are on the brink of cracking the Top 25, but the competition they've faced leaves me wondering if this team is as good as its record.

If Georgia Tech beats Miami, my question is answered. But I think the Canes will be the one answering my question.

Under Mark Richt’s direction, this team looks revitalized and prepared to making a run with the first CFB Playoff rankings are a few weeks away.

With a strong showing this month, I believe Miami will play its way into national contention and we may even see it set up a play-in game against Clemson in early December.

                    Take the home team here.

                    4* MIAMI, FLA.

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach Friday NHL Free Pick OVER 5.5 goals +105 in Columbus Blue Jackets vs New York Rangers @ 7:05 ET - With both teams having scored a total of only three goals in their past two games, the first reaction here will be to go under. However, in typical contrarian fashion I am on the over here but it certainly is with good reason. The emphasis for both of these clubs is in the offensive zone in this one. They know they've got to start scoring more goals if they're going to keep up in the high-powered Metropolitan Division. Divisional foes like the Penguins and Capitals are high-scoring machines and now even the Flyers and the Devils (particularly) have been scoring at a high rate early this season. So look for the Rangers and Blue Jackets to be taking plenty of shots at each other in this one. Also, note that Columbus and the Blueshirts have been known for high-scoring shootouts in recent meetings. 7 of the last 9 meetings have gone over the total! The five meetings last season saw an average of 7.4 goals scored per game. Only 19 of the Rangers last 65 divisional games have resulted in an under. When the Blue Jackets are off of a divisional game, only 26 of 65 (40%) have resulted in an under. After the Jackets low-scoring 2-1 battle at Carolina, look for a wild one now that they are back home where they scored 5 goals in their only game in Ohio this season. As for the Rangers, they also scored 5 goals in their only road game this season! Free Pick on OVER the total in Columbus EARLY Friday evening. Best of luck, Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach

                                Play on: UNDER 5½ -112

ASA FREE PLAY: UNDER 5.5 goals Calgary Flames vs Ottawa Senators, Friday at 9:05 PM ET

The Flames have a very strong blue line. Calgary has gone over the total in 2 of their 4 games this season but the long-term trend will prove out with the Flames being more of an "under" team this season. In the early season action it takes awhile for the markets to adjust properly and the result is value in a spot like this with this total at 5.5 goals when, arguably, a total at the key number of 5 would be more appropriate. The Flames are allowing just 2.25 goals per game this season and Ottawa has allowed just 2 goals in each of their last 2 games. Each of those games stayed under the total for the Senators and Ottawa has had just 3 overs in their last 9 Friday night games. The Senators also continue to be impacted by the absence of Erik Karlsson and the result is the Sens are purposefully trying to play a defensive-minded game limiting their opponents chances. Winning a tight low-scoring game is what the Sens are happy to do and the Flames, as noted above, are very solid in their own zone as they have an excellent roster of defensemen. We expect 4 goals here or 5 at the most so take advantage of the value here. FREE PLAY: UNDER 5.5 goals in Calgary in evening action Friday.
