    Preview: Spurs at Bulls

    Gracenote
    Oct 20, 2017

LaMarcus Aldridge and Gregg Popovich cleared the air before the star forward signed a contract extension with the team, with Popovich vowing to make Aldridge more comfortable within the offense. Aldridge certainly looked comfortable in the season opener and will try to make it two straight strong performances when the Spurs visit the Chicago Bulls on Saturday.

Aldridge put up 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Spurs to a 107-99 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday and is getting a chance to lead the team with MVP candidate Kawhi Leonard (quadriceps) slowly making his way back into game shape. Leonard sat out the opener and remains day-to-day while Kyle Anderson and Rudy Gay combine to fill the hole left by Leonard on both ends of the floor. The Bulls certainly won't have any sympathy if San Antonio remains shorthanded on Saturday as they move forward without guards Zach LaVine (knee) and Kris Dunn (finger) and forwards Nikola Mirotic (facial fractures, concussion) and Bobby Portis (suspension). Chicago dropped its opener 117-100 at Toronto on Thursday, two days after Portis was suspended for punching Mirotic in an altercation that left Mirotic hospitalized.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (San Antonio), WGN (Chicago)

ABOUT THE SPURS (1-0): Rumors swirled last season and over the summer that Aldridge was on the trade block, but instead he and the team agreed on a three-year contract extension worth a reported $72.3 million. "He just didn't feel comfortable," Popovich told reporters while explaining his conversations with Aldridge over the summer. "It's 98.75 percent on me, and whatever's left -- because I can't subtract that much -- on him. But I tried to change him. ... I tried to make him a different player, and I think that really affected his ability to feel comfortable and confident on the court. And we took care of that, basically by me letting him know that we were going to do it differently, and that it was on me, not him." Aldridge responded by outplaying Minnesota's budding star Karl-Anthony Towns on Wednesday while logging a team-high plus-15 rating.

ABOUT THE BULLS (0-1): The only positive to come out of the Mirotic-Portis altercation was that it opened up extra playing time for rookie Lauri Markkanen, who collected 17 points and eight rebounds over 33 minutes in his NBA debut. "I thought Lauri was really good," Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg told reporters. "He ran the floor well. He was OK (defensively). We want him hunting shots. What we like most about him is he has no fear out there. He can miss two or three in a row and if he has any daylight, he's going to shoot with confidence." Kay Felder, who was picked up at the end of training camp after being waived by Atlanta, added six assists in 16 minutes off the bench.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Dunn and LaVine both traveled with the Bulls to Toronto and are practicing but both expect to sit out Saturday.

    2. San Antonio F/C Pau Gasol recorded three of the team's 11 blocked shots in the opener.

    3. The home team took each of the last six meetings in the series, with Chicago earning a 95-91 win on its homecourt last season.

    PREDICTION: Spurs 110, Bulls 96

        Preview: Mavericks at Rockets

        Gracenote
        Oct 21, 2017

The Houston Rockets opened the season with an impressive 2-0 road trip, but they return home on a bit of a negative note. Star point guard Chris Paul is expected to miss up to four weeks with a bruised left knee, which will leave him out of the home opener Saturday against the Dallas Mavericks.

Paul, acquired in a massive trade with the Los Angeles Clippers in June, initially suffered the injury in the preseason and hobbled through a season-opening win at Golden State before sitting out Wednesday's 105-100 win at Sacramento. According to reports, Houston has reached out to the camp of veteran Jameer Nelson, who was recently released by the Denver Nuggets and has cleared waivers. The Mavericks have dropped their first two games - both at home - after they were dominated on the boards in a 93-88 setback against Sacramento on Friday. Rookie Dennis Smith Jr., who was impressive in his debut against Atlanta on Wednesday, was a late scratch due to a left knee effusion.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Dallas), AT&T SportsNet - Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (0-2): Dallas was outrebounded 57-36 against Sacramento after gathering nine fewer boards in Wednesday's season-opening loss to Atlanta. Dirk Nowitzki (nine rebounds) and Nerlens Noel (six) were the only two players to grab more than four. Noel, who stepped into the starting lineup for Friday's loss after opening the season on the bench, has made all nine of his shots on the season to go along with five blocks and four steals.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (2-0): Eric Gordon started in place of Paul in Wednesday's win and finished with 25 points, although he needed 23 shots to get there. Center Clint Capela carried much of the load with 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting to go along with 17 rebounds and three steals, while James Harden moved to the point guard position and handed out nine assists versus just two turnovers. Trevor Ariza missed all five of his 3-point attempts in the victory and is 3-for-15 from the floor on the season.

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. Gordon is 4-for-19 beyond the arc through the first two games.

        2. Nowitzki has 1,784 career 3-pointers, three behind Rashard Lewis for 13th on the NBA's all-time list.

        3. Houston has won 10 of the last 13 meetings, including all four last season.

        PREDICTION: Rockets 119, Mavericks 102

            Preview: Warriors at Grizzlies

            Gracenote
            Oct 21, 2017

The defending champion Golden State Warriors continue their three-game road trip against the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday armed with their first victory of the season. After the Houston Rockets spoiled its banner-raising party 122-121 on Tuesday, Golden State regrouped with a 128-120 win over New Orleans on Friday behind 31 points from Klay Thompson and 28 from Stephen Curry.

The Warriors got a bit healthier with the return of Andre Iguodala, who recorded seven points, seven rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes Friday after missing Tuesday's opener with a bad back. Memphis is coming off a season-opening 103-91 victory over New Orleans on Wednesday that served as a coming-out party for rookie Dillon Brooks. The 45th overall selection from Oregon recorded 19 points -- the most by a Canadian-born player in his first NBA game -- and five rebounds, prompting teammate Mike Conley to tell reporters: "Man, somebody made a mistake not drafting (Brooks earlier)." Two of Golden State's 15 losses and one of their five home setbacks in 2016-17 came against the Grizzlies as the clubs split the four-game season series.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area (Golden State), FSN Tennessee (Memphis)

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (1-1): Draymond Green (knee) did not practice Wednesday after recording nine points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes Tuesday, and contributed 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds in 29 minutes Friday. Golden State is 31-for-62 from 3-point range this season after averaging 31.2 attempts in 2016-17 while making 38.3 percent. Kevin Durant is off to a solid start, scoring 22 points Friday after totaling 20 on Tuesday, and is 16-for-31 from the floor in the two games.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (1-0): The usual suspects also produced Wednesday as point guard Mike Conley scored 27 points while center Marc Gasol contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds. Chandler Parsons, who signed a four-year, $94,438,523 contract before an injury-plagued last season -- his first with Memphis, was booed by the home crowd Wednesday while scoring six points. Parsons said the booing was "tasteless,'' while Gasol told reporters: "I wasn't happy with that at all. He's one of us. Booing Chandler is like booing Mike or myself."

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. Parsons averaged 14.3 points in five seasons with Houston and Dallas before slumping to 6.2 in 34 games in 2016-17.

            2. Curry recorded eight assists Friday, moving past Tim Hardaway (3,926) and into second on the franchise's all-time list with 3,929. Hall of Famer Guy Rodgers had 4,855 assists with the Philadelphia Warriors (1958-62) and San Francisco Warriors (1962-66).

            3. Memphis and San Antonio were the only teams to defeat Golden State twice last season.

            PREDICTION: Warriors 111, Grizzlies 103

                Preview: Trail Blazers at Bucks

                Gracenote
                Oct 21, 2017

Damian Lillard has his backcourt mate back in the lineup and the high-scoring duo of Lillard and CJ McCollum look to elevate Portland to a 3-0 start when the Trail Blazers visit the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday. McCollum scored 28 points on 12-of-18 shooting in his season debut Friday as Portland notched a solid 114-96 road victory over the Indiana Pacers.

McCollum missed the Trail Blazers' 48-point drubbing of the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday while serving a one-game suspension for leaving the bench during an altercation in the preseason finale but was on his game against the Pacers. "It certainly helped to have CJ back," Lillard said. "But the main thing is that we continued to defend." Portland allowed an average of 86 points in its first two games while Milwaukee is prepared for another tough contest after opening with the two teams that played in last season's Eastern Conference finals. "It's the NBA," Bucks coach Jason Kidd told reporters. "There are no easy wins in this league. You can get beat on any given night. We started with Boston and Cleveland, now we have to face Portland. We've got a tough task, no matter who we're playing."

                TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN Northwest (Portland), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (2-0): Lillard (27) and McCollum (23) combined to average 50 points per game last season and both players have fared well against Milwaukee. Lillard averaged 30.5 points, 6.5 assists, six rebounds and two steals in two games against the Bucks last season, while McCollum averaged 22 points and 3.5 assists and has scored 20 or more in three straight games against Milwaukee. Portland will look to get center Jusuf Nurkic (6-of-20 shooting in two games) going after he had six turnovers and only two rebounds Friday after having 11 points and 11 rebounds in the season opener.

ABOUT THE BUCKS (1-1): All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is averaging 35.5 points on 28-of-44 shooting after contributing 34 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in Friday's 116-97 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. "Giannis did a really good job trying to find the open guy and being aggressive," Kidd said afterward. "He scored a lot of points but he needs his teammates to make some open shots and take the pressure off him." Reigning Rookie of the Year Malcolm Brogdon was the lone other player in double digits (16 points) against the Cavaliers and is averaging 17.5 points.

                BUZZER BEATERS

                1. The Bucks won both of last season's meetings and have prevailed in four of the past five matchups.

                2. Portland PF Al-Faroqu Aminu is averaging 14 rebounds through two games after collecting 16 against Indiana.

                3. Milwaukee SG Khris Middleton (11.5 average) is 9-of-27 from the field, including 1-of-10 from 3-point range.

PREDICTION: Bucks 109, Trail Blazers 104

                    Preview: Thunder at Jazz

                    Gracenote
                    Oct 21, 2017

Paul George and Carmelo Anthony needed only one regular-season game playing with reigning league MVP Russell Westbrook to understand how special their time could be together. The star-studded trio attempts to power Oklahoma City to its third 2-0 start in as many years when the Thunder visit the Utah Jazz on Saturday.

"I'm used to watching it. I'm used to going up against it. Now, to be on the other side of that on the same team as (Westbrook), and to reap those benefits of what he can bring to the game - I'm excited about what we started out tonight, what we created tonight and where we're headed," Anthony told reporters after scoring 22 points in Thursday's 105-84 rout of the New York Knicks. George tallied 28 points to complement yet another triple-double from Westbrook, who finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 16 assists. “There's nobody that can stay in front of Russ, so he's always going to attract two (defenders). A lot of times I'm going to be catching wide open,” George told The Oklahoman. The Jazz opened their season with a 10-point home win against Denver on Wednesday but were unable to string together consecutive victories as they gave up a go-ahead 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds remaining in a 100-97 loss at Minnesota on Friday.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN Oklahoma (Oklahoma City), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (1-0): Oklahoma City's new fast-paced offense appeared to be in midseason form - the Thunder held a 35-8 advantage in transition points - but Westbrook still committed seven turnovers and the team went 11-for-38 beyond the arc. Patrick Patterson, another one of Oklahoma City's offseason additions, is expected to see more than the seven scoreless minutes he played versus New York as the team tries to ease him back after he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in August. “Hopefully, we can try to find a way to get him some more minutes against Utah. I think it's important that we get him acclimated and get him in there playing.” Thunder coach Billy Donovan told The Oklahoman.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (1-1): Ricky Rubio thrived in his first game back in Minnesota with 19 points, 10 assists and five rebounds, while backcourt mate Rodney Hood rebounded from a quiet opener versus the Nuggets with 20 points on Friday. However, Hood's night ended after only 24 minutes when he was hurt while defending Jamal Crawford midway through the fourth quarter; he was unable to put any weight on his left leg and was carried off by teammates before he was eventually diagnosed with a calf strain. Rudy Gobert finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds versus the Timberwolves to record his second double-double in as many games and the sixth in his last seven regular-season contests.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Westbrook's triple-double against New York was the 80th of his career.

                    2. Rubio became the first Jazz player to have back-to-back games with at least 10 assists since Shelvin Mack in March of 2016.

                    3. Oklahoma City's 38 3-point attempts were the franchise's most in a game since the Seattle SuperSonics hoisted up 39 on Nov. 16, 2004.

                    PREDICTION: Thunder 111, Jazz 98

                        Preview: Kings at Nuggets

                        Gracenote
                        Oct 21, 2017

The Denver Nuggets made significant strides last season in large part because they could score with just about anyone. After a lackluster offensive effort in their opener, the Nuggets look to get their rhythm going when they host the Sacramento Kings on Saturday in their first home game of the season.

Denver, which ranked third in the NBA in scoring in 2016-17 at 111.7 points per game, had 21 turnovers and managed just 12 free-throw attempts in a 106-96 loss at Denver on Wednesday. "We couldn't score. We couldn't execute. We couldn't value the ball," coach Michael Malone said. "And that led to (the Jazz) getting whatever they wanted on the offensive end." Included in the struggle was a scoreless second half for standout big man Nikola Jokic, who finished with seven points. The Kings picked up their first win of the season Friday in Dallas, riding a balanced attack and a dominant effort on the boards to a 93-88 triumph.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Sacramento), Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE KINGS (1-1): Guard George Hill has settled in well with his new team, following up a 16-point showing in Wednesday's loss to Houston with a team-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting against Dallas. Nineteen-year-old rookie De'Aaron Fox was just 4-of-13 from the floor Friday but posted his first career double-digit assist game with 10 helpers in 26 minutes. Veteran forward Zach Randolph had 13 points in his team debut after missing the opener due to oral surgery.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (0-1): Jamal Murray and Emmanuel Mudiay battled it out for the starting point guard spot in the preseason, but the situation remains fluid and neither stood out in the opener. "We're excited about the future for both of those guys," Malone said. "We're (going to) live with their mistakes and let them play through their mistakes." Murray, who received the start against Utah, was 2-for-6 from the floor in 20 minutes and Mudiay went 3-for-8 in 19 minutes, with both players chipping in just two assists apiece.

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. Kings C Willie Cauley-Stein has back-to-back double-doubles to open the season.

                        2. Nuggets SG Gary Harris hit all three of his 3-point tries against Utah after finishing 10th in the NBA beyond the arc (42 percent) last season.

                        3. Sacramento rookie SF Justin Jackson has seven points and zero assists in 36 minutes through the first two games.

                        PREDICTION: Nuggets 108, Kings 99
