NCAAF Game of the Day: Penn State at Ohio State

Penn State Nittany Lions at Ohio State Buckeyes (-6.5, 56.5)

A crucial moment in Penn State's rise toward the top of the college football landscape was its dramatic upset of Ohio State last season, and the host Buckeyes hope for some payback when the Big Ten powerhouses tangle Saturday in Columbus. A fourth-quarter rally capped by a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown lifted the Nittany Lions to a stunning victory in last year's meeting, which sparked a closing push that led to Penn State's Big Ten title.

The second-ranked Lions enter this matchup coming off an impressive 42-13 win over then-No. 15 Michigan and once again can carve out a path to the conference championship if they can take care of No. 6 Ohio State.

"I don't think there's any doubt when you find a way as an organization to beat the No. 2 team in the country, I don't care where you're at in your program's development, that win has a big impact from a lot of different perspectives," Penn State coach James Franklin told reporters of last year's triumph and the impact it had moving forward.

The Buckeyes have been steamrolling opponents since their early loss to Oklahoma, winning five in a row by an average of 42 points, and they are coming off a bye week that should have them primed and ready for the challenge. Ohio State has produced at least 500 yards of offense in each of those five straight wins, the longest stretch in program history, and it enters the week tied for the FBS lead in scoring (47.3).

      TV:
      3:30 p.m. ET, FOX.

      LINE HISTORY:
The line opened at some locations at OSU -7 and been bet down a half a point to 6.5 at most sportsbooks. There are a few shops dealing Penn State +6. The total opened offshore at 56, got bet down to 54.5 but is now back up to 56.

      INJURY REPORT:

Penn State - OL Andrew Nelson (Questionable, undisclosed)

Ohio State - CB Shaun Wade (Questionable, undisclosed)

      ABOUT PENN STATE (7-0 SU, 5-1-1 ATS, 2-5 O/U):
The usual suspects did their thing against the Wolverines as quarterback Trace McSorley threw for 282 yards and a touchdown while scoring three times on the ground, and running back Saquon Barkley had two rushing TDs to go along with a juggling reception for a third score. Ohio State's top-rated offense will be tested by the nation's No. 1 scoring defense (9.6), led by senior linebacker Jason Cabinda, who had 12 tackles, a half-sack and a forced fumble last week. Senior wideout DaeSean Hamilton has 17 catches for 272 yards and three TDs over the last three games and needs nine yards to move into third place on the school's all-time list.

      ABOUT OHIO STATE (6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS, 5-2 O/U):
Senior J.T. Barrett ranks second to McSorley in the Big Ten in passing yards with 1,838 and he has 18 TD passes with no interceptions during the five-game run. "With a quarterback who has played as long as he has, he's had several of them [to prove himself]," coach Urban Meyer said of Barrett, who has had very few but notable bad games in big situations. "I wouldn’t say this is the one, but this is obviously a very important one." J.K. Dobbins leads the way on the ground with 775 yards and five TDs for the Big Ten's top team in yards per carry (six).

      TRENDS:

*Penn State is 11-1-1 ATS in its last 13 conference games.
*Ohio State is 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.
*The over is 4-0 in the Buckeyes' last four games overall.
*The home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four matchups between these two sides.

      CONSENSUS:
The road dogs from Nittany Lions are picking up 71 percent of the action on the spread and Over is getting 54 percent of the totals selections.

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (112-61) at Houston Astros (110-66)

        Playoff Series:
World Series; Houston leads 2-1Preview: Dodgers at Astros

        Gracenote
        Oct 28, 2017

The Houston Astros are two wins away from winning the first World Series title in franchise history and they look to take another step when they host the Los Angeles Dodgers in Saturday's Game 4. Houston has won the past two games to take a 2-1 lead in the series and emerged victorious in Friday's game 5-3 when it received 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief from Brad Peacock.

Yuli Gurriel's homer to open a four-run Astros' second inning was the lone blast on Friday after the teams combined for a record eight homers in Wednesday's epic Game 2. Houston is 7-0 at home in the postseason and thriving in front of a raucous atmosphere so the pressure is squarely on the Dodgers to win at least one game and get the series back to Los Angeles. "Obviously this crowd is into it, very educated, very enthusiastic," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters after Game 3. "They've got some confidence over there, that team. ... But honestly, I don't think we see it as pressure, just go out and play a good clean game." National League Championship Series co-MVPs Justin Turner (2-for-13, one homer) and Chris Taylor (1-for-9, one homer) are struggling for Los Angeles, while Astros star Jose Altuve (3-for-15, one homer) is also having a quiet series.

        TV: 8:20 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Alex Wood (0-1, 5.79 ERA) vs. Charlie Morton (1-1, 6.23)

Wood is making just his second start of the postseason as he gave up three runs (all on solo homers) and four hits while striking out seven over 4 2/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS. The 26-year-old is pitching for just the second time in 31 days and he is aware Roberts has been quick to pull starting pitchers this postseason. "We don't have the longest leash," Wood told reporters at his Friday press conference, "so if anything, it kind of holds us to a higher standard, like you need to go out and shut it down and put up zeroes, and not give up any runs and then you can stay in longer."

Morton hasn't pitched more than five innings in any of his three postseason starts while striking out 14 in 13 innings. The Astros took a flyer on the 33-year-old after he pitched in just four games for Philadelphia last season and the investment paid off as Morton won a career-high 14 games and now gets to make his first World Series start. "It's an honor," Morton said at his Friday press conference. "Most people don't get a chance to play in the postseason, let alone in a Championship Series or the World Series. I'm going to try to enjoy it, but at the same time I've got a job to do."

        WALK-OFFS

        1. The Astros have outscored opponents 36-10 at home in the postseason.

        2. Houston RF Josh Reddick is 4-for-11 with a walk and three runs scored in the World Series after going 1-for-25 in the American League Championship Series.

        3. Los Angeles 1B Cody Bellinger fanned in all four at-bats on Friday and is hitless in 11 at-bats (seven strikeouts) in the series.

        PREDICTION: Astros 4, Dodgers 3

Dodgers at Astros 10/28/17 - World Series Game 4 - MLB Picks & Predictions

                    Latest Odds : HOU -125 Total 8

The Los Angeles Dodgers will look to even the 2017 World Series at two games apiece when they battle the Houston Astros from Minute Maid Park on Saturday night. Last night, SP Yu Darvish recorded just five outs and gave up four earned runs during a 5-3 loss. Los Angeles managed just four hits and committed two errors in defeat.

Twenty-six year old southpaw Alex Wood (16-3 2.72 ERA) will get the nod for the Dodgers on Saturday night. In his lone appearance this postseason, Wood allowed three solo home runs and struck out seven batters during a 3-2 loss at Chicago.

With a win on Saturday, the Houston Astros would move one game away from becoming World Series Champions. In Game Three, Yuli Gurriel homered and Brian McCann had three hits to spark the Houston offense. SP Lance McCullers Jr. gave up three runs over five plus frames and was credited with the victory for the Astros.

The Astros will tab thirty-three year old righty Charlie Morton (14-7 3.62 ERA) to start in Game Four. Morton has appeared three times this postseason and has allowed nine runs over 13 innings of work.
                    Recent Betting Trends:
Dodgers are 8-3 in Woods last 11 road starts.
Astros are 4-0 in Mortons last 4 home starts.
Over is 5-2 in Woods last 7 starts overall.
Under is 4-1 in Mortons last 5 home starts.
Dodgers are 0-4 in the last 4 meetings in Houston.
Free Betting Pick: OVER 8 Runs
Los Angeles 1B Adrian Gonzalez (back) is not traveling with the team this postseason. Through 162 games, Los Angeles ranked 22nd in batting average and 12th in runs scored. For the season, Houston ranked 1st in batting average and 1st in runs scored. Take the over on Saturday. Final Score Prediction, Houston Astros win 6-5.

                      Preview: Cavaliers at Pelicans

                      Gracenote
                      Oct 27, 2017

The Cleveland Cavaliers added several new faces in the offseason and are having a little trouble getting on the same page early in 2017-18. The Cavaliers will try to bounce back from a loss to the Brooklyn Nets when they visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday.

Cleveland returned J.R. Smith and Tristan Thompson to the starting lineup on Wednesday to spark the defense, but the Nets still ended up knocking down 17 3-pointers while beating the Cavaliers 112-107. "These guys are NBA players," Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue told reporters. "If we don't contest shots and get out to the 3-point line, they're going to continue to make them. We come into the game, we told them they're second in the league in attempts and they're getting them up. We're running around here worrying about getting the Brooklyn (draft) pick (in 2018); they might want our pick." The Cavaliers can count on a defensive test from Pelicans center DeMarcus Cousins, who dominated his former team on Thursday with 41 points and 23 rebounds in a 114-106 win at Sacramento. Cousins buried 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and New Orleans knocked down 13 3-pointers despite missing star forward Anthony Davis (knee, quad).

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Cleveland), FS New Orleans

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (3-2): LeBron James served as the point guard on Wednesday with Derrick Rose (ankle) and Dwyane Wade (knee) out of the lineup and ended up with 29 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds. The superstar forward handled the point in each of the last two games - handing out 13 assists in each - but the team doesn't plan to have him there permanently. "It's a lot of pressure to put on LeBron to have to handle the ball for 40 minutes," Lue told reporters. "That's why I talk about playing the point guard position, it can wear you down. Unfortunately, that's all we have right now until D-Rose gets back."

ABOUT THE PELICANS (2-3): Davis remains day-to-day, but Cousins is showing he is ready to pick up the slack after dealing with the boos from Sacramento fans and thriving while shooting 14-of-25 from the field in 44 minutes. “It was a special night," Cousins told reporters. "The fans were beautiful. They were into the game. They let it be well-known that they hated every shot I made. Now I know how other players feel (when they visit Sacramento). I used to be on the other side of the fence. I can remember games where the crowd was the reason we won. It’s well-known that the Kings have incredible fans." Cousins recorded a double-double in each of the first five games and is averaging 33 points and 14.2 rebounds.

                      BUZZER BEATERS

                      1. Cavaliers PF Kevin Love recorded a double-double in four of the first five games and is averaging 11.2 rebounds.

                      2. Pelicans PG Jameer Nelson is averaging 11 points and 4.3 assists in three games off the bench since signing with the team.

                      3. The teams split two meetings last season, with New Orleans pulling out a 124-122 victory at home on Jan. 23.

                      PREDICTION: Cavaliers 111, Pelicans 102

                          Preview: Celtics at Heat

The first few days of the regular season were painful - literally and figuratively - for the Boston Celtics, but their turnaround has been impressive. The Celtics look to make it four wins in a row when they cap a quick two-game road trip at the Miami Heat on Saturday.

The loss of Gordon Hayward in the season opener was followed by an eight-point loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in the opener at home for Boston, but it returned the favor with a 96-89 win over the Bucks on Thursday in Milwaukee. Al Horford had his best offensive game of the season with 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting and Kyrie Irving followed suit with a season-high 24 points for the Celtics, who held opponents to an average of 90 points during the winning streak. The Heat are 2-1 thus far on a six-game homestand after dropping a 117-100 decision to the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. Miami center Hassan Whiteside (knee) missed three straight games and remains day-to-day.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS Boston, FS Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE CELTICS (3-2): Aside from Horford and Irving, the rest of the Celtics combined to shoot a woeful 12-for-46 from the floor, but the two stars can credit reserve Marcus Smart for helping to find a way to raise their production. "Al's a unique player that we have who can dominate from the inside and the outside," Smart told reporters. "So as a guard it's our job to get him the ball. If he hits his first two shots you've gotta go back to him, so you've gotta find ways for him to get the ball. When Kyrie has the ball, he draws so much attention that on the back side, when you set screens, they're not even paying attention. ... So he found his sweet spot to the corner and Kyrie found him." Horford made 4-of-5 3-pointers - two during a third-quarter run when Smart set a key screen to free Horford for one and then fed him for another - and is 9-for-16 from beyond the arc over the last three games.

ABOUT THE HEAT (2-2): Rookie forward Bam Adebayo made his first career start in Wednesday's loss and finished with four points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes, and was part of a crew that allowed the Spurs to shoot 55.3 percent. "We just need to get just a little bit more acquainted with each other," forward James Johnson (21 points) told reporters of his team, which was a top-5 defensive unit a season ago but has struggled on that end in the early going. "Maybe a little bit more talking, a little bit more eye to communication. The Spurs are a great team and they taught us a lot about ourselves." Tyler Johnson led the way on the offensive end with 23 points after he was held to single digits in each of the first three contests.

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. Smart returned from a two-game layoff due to an ankle injury and was 2-for-10 against Milwaukee, leaving him with a 28.2 percent mark from the floor for the season.

                          2. Heat C Kelly Olynyk, who played his first four seasons in Boston before signing with Miami this offseason, is 6-of-11 from 3-point range.

                          3. The Celtics have won seven consecutive meetings and four in a row in Miami.

                          PREDICTION: Celtics 104, Heat 99

                              Preview: Thunder at Bulls

                              Gracenote
                              Oct 28, 2017

The Oklahoma City Thunder integrated two star attractions into their lineup and the team's power-charged trio is still learning how to play together entering Saturday's road game against the Chicago Bulls. Oklahoma City will be trying to get back to .500 as reigning MVP Russell Westbrook, and forwards Carmelo Anthony and Paul George further their knowledge of where on the floor each other likes to operate.

Westbrook scored 27 points while Anthony and George had 23 apiece Friday but the Thunder fell 119-116 to the Minnesota Timberwolves. "Yeah, you know, we're just trying to figure it out," Westbrook said afterward. "We're trying to find ways to obviously be efficient, but at the same time making sure guys are in a spot to catch the ball and be effective." Chicago lost its first three games of the season before using a 62-40 rebounding advantage to fuel Thursday's 91-86 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. The Bulls were hoping to have point guard Kris Dunn (dislocated left index finger) make his team debut against the Thunder but some soreness lingers and he is considered questionable at best.

                              TV:
8 p.m. ET, FSN Oklahoma, WGN (Chicago)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (2-3): Westbrook is averaging 22.6 points and has two triple-doubles but isn't dominating games in the manner he did last season when he was a one-man show. The final Oklahoma City possession Friday was a sign of the difference as Anthony took the tying 3-point shot that missed and left the Thunder dealing with another defeat. "We had to push the ball at that point in time and I think Russell was just surveying the field and trying to find a way maybe to get Carmelo trailing a little bit there," Oklahoma City coach Billy Donovan explained afterward. "I'll see the film, but I do think that Russell is going to try in those situations to get the best shot, and if he can get Carmelo a shot, I think he's going to try to generate a shot for him."

ABOUT THE BULLS (1-3): First-round draft pick Lauri Markkanen is living up to his billing as an impact rookie by averaging 15.8 points and 10 rebounds through his first four NBA games. The 7-footer, who was the seventh overall pick, has scored 13 or more points in each game, has twice collected 12 rebounds and has made 12-of-30 3-point attempts, including a key late one in Thursday's win over the Hawks. "I am not afraid of big moments," Markkanen said afterward. "Even though my shot was not falling early on, I still believe every shot I shoot is going in."

                              BUZZER BEATERS

                              1. The Bulls have won four of the past six meetings.

                              2. Representatives of F Nikola Mirotic (fractured facial bones, concussion) informed Chicago management that their client doesn't wish to be a teammate of F Bobby Portis (who punched Mirotic in a recent practice) in the future and will waive his no-trade clause if necessary.

                              3. Oklahoma City C Steven Adams scored a season-best 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting Friday and is averaging 15 points and shooting 69.6 percent from the field.

                              PREDICTION: Thunder 106, Bulls 100
