      Playoff Series:
      World Series; Series Tied 3-3

      Preview: Astros at Dodgers

      Gracenote
      Nov 1, 2017

Either the Los Angeles Dodgers will end a 29-year title drought or the Houston Astros will celebrate their first World Series championship when the teams compete in Game 7 at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday. The wild series that has featured a record 24 homers was extended to a seventh game Tuesday as the Dodgers posted a 3-1 victory.

Los Angeles solved Astros ace Justin Verlander in Game 6 and looks to ride the momentum when Yu Darvish takes the mound against Houston's Lance McCullers Jr. "You've got the two best teams in baseball going head-to-head," Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts told reporters after Game 6. "Like we've talked about from the beginning, these two teams mirror one another. But we worked all year long to have home-field advantage, and here we are." The Astros hope a second chance will deliver the outcome they crave after seeing their offense get shut down on Tuesday. "Now it feels like we need to play seven," Houston manager A.J. Hinch told reporters after the setback. "I'm glad the series isn't over in their favor. But this series has been back and forth - and two incredible teams trying to get to the finish line."

      TV:
      8:20 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Lance McCullers Jr. (1-0, 2.95 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Yu Darvish (2-1, 4.15)

McCullers was on hold for possible relief duty in Game 6, so he did his day-before throwing in right field following the conclusion of Tuesday's contest. The 24-year-old defeated the Dodgers in Game 3, when he gave up three runs and four hits with four walks over 5 1/3 innings. "I just have to stick with my game plan and execute a little bit better than last time in certain spots and just be a competitor out there," McCullers told reporters after Game 6.

Darvish was dreadful when matched against McCullers in Game 3 as he gave up four runs and six hits - including a homer by Yuli Gurriel - while lasting just 1 2/3 innings. "I can't pay that much attention to what happened last time," the Japanese Darvish said through his interpreter at a press conference. "Just focus on (Wednesday's) outing and have a good game." Darvish has served up seven homers in 24 2/3 career postseason innings, which includes his tenure with Texas.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. This will be the first Game 7 between two 100-win clubs since the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Athletics in 1931.

      2. Houston RF George Springer (9-for-24, five walks) hit his fourth homer of the series on Tuesday and is one shy of the World Series record shared by Reggie Jackson (1977) and Chase Utley (2009).

      3. Los Angeles LF Joc Pederson, who batted .212 in the regular season, is 5-for-14 with a franchise record-tying three homers in the series.

      PREDICTION: Dodgers 5, Astros 4

                      Preview: Flyers at Blackhawks

                      Gracenote
                      Oct 31, 2017

Joel Quenneville is no stranger to using colorful language to get his point across, however, one might ascertain there's a bit more behind Tuesday's profanity-laced outburst with the Chicago Blackhawks on the wrong end of five of their last six contests. With just six goals during their three-game losing skid, the Blackhawks look to get it in gear on Wednesday when they host the Philadelphia Flyers.

"I didn't like the last part of our practice. The intensity and the pace went down to a tough-to-watch (level). It was just, 'Let’s go,'" Quenneville told the Chicago Sun-Times. Patrick Kane has been held off the scoresheet in back-to-back contests following a six-game point streak, but the former Hart Trophy winner has tormented Philadelphia with 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 11 career contests - and that's excluding his Stanley Cup-clinching goal in 2010. The Flyers became the first team to fall victim to Arizona on Monday, dropping a 4-3 overtime decision despite Sean Couturier scoring twice to give him eight points (five goals, three assists) in his last four games. The 24-year-old Couturier, who has 32 points and is a plus-28 in his last 32 games dating to last season, has nine goals to lead the team and resides just six tallies shy of matching his career-best total after playing all 82 contests in the 2014-15 campaign.

                      TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN

ABOUT THE FLYERS (6-5-1): Rookie forward Nolan Patrick joined defensemen Shayne Gostisbehere (upper body) and Andrew MacDonald (lower body) by being placed on injured reserve on Tuesday, with the second overall pick missing the last three contests while nursing an upper-body ailment. Philadelphia recalled Will O'Neill from Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League on Tuesday, with the defenseman barely able to contain himself as he sits on the verge of making his NHL debut. "It's my first time here and it's been a long time coming for me, so I'm excited and looking forward to it," said O'Neill, who has scored one goal and set up two others in nine games with the Phantoms.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (5-5-2): Artem Anisimov has shown signs of breaking out of his offensive slump by scoring in his second straight contest in Saturday's 6-3 setback to Colorado. The 29-year-old Russian scored two goals and set up two others in a 7-4 rout of Philadelphia on Oct. 18, 2016 before adding an assist in a 3-1 setback to the Flyers on Dec. 3. Brandon Saad, who leads the team with six goals, has just one point - an assist - in his last six games.

                      OVERTIME

                      1. Philadelphia captain Claude Giroux, who notched a pair of assists on Monday, has scored at least one point in nine of 12 contests this season.

                      2. Chicago is 0-for-14 on the power play in the last three games and surrendered four tallies while on the penalty kill in that same stretch.

                      3. Flyers RW Wayne Simmonds has been held off the scoresheet in four straight contests after recording nine points (six goals, three assists) in his previous eight.

                      PREDICTION: Blackhawks 4, Flyers 1

                          Preview: Penguins at Oilers

                          Gracenote
                          Oct 31, 2017

The Pittsburgh Penguins have long been known for their scoring prowess, making their current offensive issues quite puzzling. Pittsburgh looks to end a string of five straight games with fewer than three goals when it continues its five-game road trip Wednesday against the Edmonton Oilers.

The Penguins have lost the first two games of the trek and dropped three in a row on the road, scoring one goal in each of the setbacks. They posted a pair of overtime home victories in between, with both contests ending in 2-1 decisions. One of those triumphs came last Tuesday against Edmonton, which is in the middle of a five-game homestand on which it split the first two contests. The Oilers edged Dallas 5-4 on Thursday before dropping a 5-2 decision to Washington two days later for their fourth setback in six home games.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh, Sportsnet One, TVA (Edmonton)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (7-5-1): Pittsburgh has been outscored 9-2 over the first two games of its road trip, with Evgeni Malkin scoring in each of the setbacks. The 31-year-old Russian, who is a two-time Art Ross Trophy winner, is tied with captain Sidney Crosby and Conor Sheary for the team lead in goals (five) and even with Phil Kessel for tops on the club in points (13). Malkin has collected four tallies and nine points over his last seven contests.

ABOUT THE OILERS (3-6-1): Connor McDavid leads the team with five goals but has yet to score on the power play, where Edmonton is 4-for-33 on the season. The Oilers' special teams could use plenty of improvement, as they are tied with Anaheim for 29th in the league with a 12.1 percent success rate with the man advantage while ranking 30th on the penalty kill (70.3 percent). Patrick Maroon is riding a five-game point streak during which he has registered four goals and an assist.

                          OVERTIME

                          1. All 22 players who have skated for the Penguins this season have a negative plus/minus rating, with D Kris Letang being worst at minus-14.

                          2. Edmonton is 0-for-12 on the power play over its last four contests.

                          3. Pittsburgh recalled Tristan Jarry from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and assigned fellow G Casey DeSmith to the American Hockey League club.

                          PREDICTION: Penguins 4, Oilers 3

Two of the most surprising teams in the early season meet Wednesday night when the New Jersey Devils begin a three-game trip to Western Canada against the Vancouver Canucks. The Devils, who missed the playoffs each of the last five seasons, have won eight of the first 10 games and the Canucks boast points in the last five contests (4-0-1) after suffering two years without a postseason.

New Jersey, which has won two in a row and scored 36 goals in its eight wins while netting two combined in the two setbacks, is 4-0-0 on the road but face the first trip of more than two contests. “Obviously, a lot of the young guys haven’t done the trip before,” Devils captain Andy Greene told reporters of the trek, which includes games at Edmonton and Calgary. “I think it’ll be good for this group to get out on the road and see what happens.” Vancouver saw its four-game win streak come to an end with a 2-1 overtime loss against Dallas on Monday, but has given up only seven goals during the point streak and is giving teams a different look. “If they faced us the last couple years, we’re playing a lot harder and faster than we did in the past,” Canucks defenseman Chris Tanev told Sportsnet. “That’s how you have to play in this league now.”

TV: 10 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New Jersey), Sportsnet 360 (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE DEVILS (8-2-0): Power forward Brian Boyle told reporters, “I’m ready to rock here,” and is expected to make his New Jersey debut at some point on the trip after being treated for Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. “We have a speed game but he’s a very smart player,” Devils coach John Hynes told The Record. “With his size and his understanding of the game, he fits in well with the type of group we have up front. He also brings some things we don’t have. He’s got a big body. He’s a good centerman who can kill penalties.” Right wing Kyle Palmieri is expected to miss all three games on the trip while he recovers from a left foot injury.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (6-3-2): Vancouver posted 39 shots in Sunday’s loss, including 16 in the first period, but could not score until Sam Gagner registered his first of the season with a power-play tally in the third. The Canucks were without leading scorer Brock Boeser (two goals, nine points) because of a bruised right foot, suffered after blocking a shot last Thursday against Washington, but the rookie forward could return Wednesday. Forward Derek Dorsett was kept off the scoresheet Sunday, but is off to a great start with six goals in 11 contests, and offseason free-agent signing Thomas Vanek notched his sixth point with an assist against Dallas.

                              OVERTIME

                              1. The Devils have won five straight meetings, including a 2-1 overtime triumph at Vancouver last January.

                              2. Tanev leads the team with a plus-8 rating and has recorded a pair of goals along with three assists.

                              3. New Jersey LW Taylor Hall leads the team with 13 points - eight in the last four contests.

                              PREDICTION: Canucks 4, Devils 3
