    Preview: Maple Leafs at Ducks

    Gracenote
    Oct 31, 2017

The Anaheim Ducks have adjusted to life without Ryan Getzlaf for much of the early season, so they likely won't experience much in the way of an adjustment on Wednesday when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs. Getzlaf, who has missed five games already this season due to a lower-body injury, was placed on injured reserve after he was struck in the face by a deflected puck in Sunday's 4-3 shootout win over Carolina.

"You have no control over it. There's no feeling sorry for yourself because there's nobody in the league that's going to feel sorry for you," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle told the Orange County Register. Toronto likely isn't feeling sorry for anyone but itself, as the club has seen its fast start to the season slowed by scoring just seven goals during its three-game losing skid. "We can still be a lot better but we just have to get out of the little funk we're in and continue to play a full 60 minutes," Maples Leafs forward Auston Matthews told reporters. The reigning Calder Trophy winner has six points (three goals, three assists) during his last five games, but the Maple Leafs are 1-4-0 in that stretch after posting a 6-1-0 mark in the previous seven tilts.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Ontario, FSN West (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (7-5-0): Nazem Kadri, who has three goals in his last two games, has gashed Anaheim for eight points (six goals, two assists) in eight career encounters. While Toronto's second-ranked offense often receives rave reviews, goaltender Frederik Andersen has been on the defensive for much of the season - and Monday's 3-2 setback to San Jose was no exception. The 28-year-old made a season high-tying 36 saves in that encounter, marking the 10th time in 11 starts that he has faced at least 30 shots on goal.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (6-4-1): While Getzlaf will be sidelined, Anaheim received a boost with the return to practice of defenseman Kevin Bieksa as he bids to end a three-game absence due to a hand injury. Bieksa is hopeful to return to the club this week while left wing Nick Ritchie's availability for Wednesday's tilt is in question after he was hit with a puck early in Tuesday's workout. Goaltender John Gibson, who has yielded two goals or fewer in seven of his last eight games overall, has turned aside 55 of 60 shots to split a pair of career encounters versus Toronto.

    OVERTIME

    1. Maple Leafs D Morgan Rielly has set up three goals in his last four contests to increase his team-leading assist total to nine.

    2. Anaheim C Andrew Cogliano, who is a Toronto native, has answered a three-game point drought with a goal and two assists in his last three contests.

    3. Maple Leafs LW James van Riemsdyk has yet to score a goal in nine career encounters versus the Ducks.

PREDICTION: Maple Leafs 4, Ducks 2

        Preview: Predators at Sharks

        Gracenote
        Oct 31, 2017

Logan Couture has been on a force on the offensive end and the San Jose Sharks have benefited as a result. With 11 points (seven goals, four assists) in his last seven contests, Couture aims to keep his foot on the gas Wednesday when the Sharks play the second contest of their five-game homestand against the Nashville Predators.

Couture notched an assist on Monday as San Jose collected its fifth win in seven outings with a 3-2 victory over Toronto. While the Sharks are treading water in the top-heavy Pacific Division, the Predators have dropped three of four overall and seen their offense stuck in neutral with just nine goals in their last five. "We've had a lot of good games where we haven't gotten points, and a couple of bad ones that we just have to forget about," said Nashville forward Filip Forsberg, who has three tallies in his last four games overall and resides one goal shy of 100 for a career that is only 275 games old. The 23-year-old Swede was held off the scoresheet in all three contests versus San Jose last season and has just three points (one goal, two assists) in nine career encounters.

        TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (5-4-2): Nashville has had plenty of time to stew after John Tavares netted a hat trick in the New York Islanders' 6-2 romp on Saturday, perhaps reason enough for coach Peter Laviolette to welcome the challenge of the team's upcoming road trip. "Going on the road and getting some wins and building something on the road, there's always something to be said for that," Laviolette told reporters. "I think if you've been around long enough, you've come back from road trips and (you've been successful) and then I've been on road trips that go the other way, too. But our group is ready to go on the road." The Predators will play three games in four nights against the California contingent, with a rematch of the Western Conference final slated for Friday against Anaheim.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (6-5-0): Rookie defenseman Tim Heed has made the most of his opportunity to step into the lineup in place of veteran Paul Martin, who sustained an ankle injury three weeks ago. The 26-year-old Heed logged a career-high 21:06 of ice time and collected a goal and an assist for his first career multi-point performance on Monday to increase his point total to six (two goals, four assists) in the past seven games overall. "When I look at his game (Monday), I thought it was excellent. There isn't a whole lot I would change," Sharks coach Pete DeBoer told the San Jose Mercury News of Heed, who was signed as a free agent out of Sweden in 2016.

        OVERTIME

        1. Nashville G Pekka Rinne owns an 11-6-4 mark with one shutout and a 1.87 goals-against average and .942 save percentage in 22 career encounters with San Jose.

        2. Sharks F Joe Thornton notched an assist on Monday to move into sole possession of 20th place on the NHL's all-time scoring list with 1,399 career points.

        3. Predators F Craig Smith has scored in back-to-back contests after mustering just two points (one goal, one assist) in his previous nine contests.

        PREDICTION: Sharks 3, Predators 1

                    Preview: Bucks at Hornets

                    Gracenote
                    Nov 1, 2017

Kemba Walker is well on his way to being remembered as one of the most potent offensive players in Charlotte history and he looks for another solid outing when the Hornets host the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. The seventh-year pro has matched Larry Johnson's record for most 20-point outings (192) and can surpass the mark if he reaches at least 20 for the fourth consecutive contest.

Walker scored 27 points in Monday's 104-99 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies and is averaging 29 points over the past three games. "He's just so good," Hornets coach Steve Clifford told reporters. "I mean, we get a shot every time he goes pick and roll. And if they double-team him, we get a shot, too. (Former coach and current television analyst) Jeff Van Gundy told us when we played Boston, everyone's talking about Kyrie Irving, but he's right there, too. He's really good. I mean, he's not just good. He's like really, really good." Milwaukee has a pretty good talent as well in star small forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who matched his "season low" with 28 points in Tuesday's 110-91 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The output marked just the second time in seven games that Antetokounmpo (34.7 average) scored fewer than 30 points this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Southeast (Charlotte)

ABOUT THE BUCKS (4-3): Antetokounmpo has been carrying Milwaukee but he attempted just 14 shots against Oklahoma City - his first time under 20 this season - due to foul trouble that kept him on the bench for eight minutes of the second quarter. "I need to do a better job of being aware," Antetokounmpo said afterward. "I know my team needs me on the floor, but that can't stop me from being aggressive. I had two offensive fouls and I'd rather have those than the touch fouls. I just need to do a better job of staying on the floor and helping my teammates." Nobody else scored in double digits for the Bucks, who were just 9-of-30 from 3-point range and outrebounded 46-31.

                    ABOUT THE HORNETS (4-3):
Center Dwight Howard was in double digits on the boards in each of his first six games with the club before struggling badly against the Grizzlies. Howard grabbed just seven rebounds and had only two points on 1-of-9 shooting after being above 50 percent from the field in each contest this season. Despite the poor showing, Howard is averaging 13.7 points and 15 rebounds and his presence in the paint is helping create room for Walker on the perimeter.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. The Bucks have won the past three meetings, including a 103-94 home win on Oct. 23 behind 32 points and 14 rebounds from Antetokounmpo.

                    2. Milwaukee SG Khris Middleton had just nine points on 3-of-13 shooting against Oklahoma City after scoring a season-high 27 two nights earlier against the Atlanta Hawks.

                    3. Charlotte PG Michael Carter-Williams (knee) has been assigned to the Greensboro Swarm of the G League for a rehab stint.

                    PREDICTION: Hornets 103, Bucks 99

                        Preview: Pacers at Cavaliers

                        Gracenote
                        Nov 1, 2017

The Cleveland Cavaliers look nothing like the team that has won three consecutive Eastern Conference titles as they enter Wednesday's home game against the Indiana Pacers. The Cavaliers have lost three straight games, beginning with a loss to the Brooklyn Nets and followed by back-to-back blowout defeats against the New Orleans Pelicans and New York Knicks.

Getting pounded 114-95 by the Knicks led to the Cavaliers holding a team meeting on Tuesday in search of figuring out how to start a turnaround. "I feel like we can get in better shape, that's going to help us on the defensive end," Cavaliers center Kevin Love told reporters after the meeting. "Communication, energy and just getting the new guys to (become) adjusted, well adjusted and on the floor, with more time together. So time will tell how it's going to play out." Indiana rolled to a 101-83 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday as offseason acquisition Domantas Sabonis contributed 12 points and a career-best 16 rebounds. The second-year forward came to the Pacers from Oklahoma City along with guard Victor Oladipo in exchange for All-Star forward Paul George.

                        TV:
7 p.m. ET, FSN Indiana, FSN Ohio (Cleveland)

ABOUT THE PACERS (4-3): Sabonis is dealing with an upper respiratory infection and that is only making his recent strong play look even better. He has collected double-digit rebounds in five consecutive games - averaging 12.4 during the stretch - and scored 22 points on 9-of-9 shooting in a recent victory over the San Antonio Spurs. "He's a very intelligent basketball player," Indiana coach Nate McMillan told reporters. "He plays within himself. He is always in the right place on both ends of the floor. His basketball IQ is high and he makes teammates better."

                        ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (3-4):
Forward LeBron James failed to reach 20 points in either of the past two losses and coach Tyronn Lue said the former MVP is still bothered by the left ankle he injured during the preseason. "He's trying to work himself back in shape, but the games are coming so fast and it's hard to really do that," Lue told reporters. "The best way to do that is by him playing more minutes and getting in game shape and we just got to go from there." Cleveland's lackluster start is also due to poor defense as the club is allowing 110.1 points per game and seeing opponents shoot 45.9 percent from the field.

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. The Cavaliers went 3-1 versus the Pacers in the regular season and later swept a four-game playoff series.

                        2. Cleveland SG Iman Shumpert (knee) will miss at least one week after being injured on Sunday.

                        3. Indiana C Myles Turner (concussion, neck) will miss his seventh consecutive game.

                        PREDICTION: Cavaliers 107, Pacers 102

                            Preview: Hawks at 76ers

                            Oct 31, 2017

The Philadelphia 76ers were the team battling to stay out of last place in the Eastern Conference the last few seasons as "the process" took shape, but now they look like playoff contenders. The Atlanta Hawks, who visit the 76ers on Wednesday, may be the team getting ready to take Philadelphia's place at the bottom of the East.

The 76ers picked up wins in three of their last four games, with the lone loss in that span on a last-second shot, and proved they could win on the road against a tough opponent with a 115-107 triumph at Houston on Monday that completed a two-game Texas sweep. "The Dallas game gave us a lot more confidence, and coming into Houston, we came in with the same mentality, and that was to get a win," rookie point guard Ben Simmons told reporters. "Now we go home to play Atlanta and Indiana, and that’s where our focus is." The Hawks are trying to find some focus and had their losing streak reach six straight with a 117-106 home loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday. Atlanta began the season with five straight games on the road - dropping the final four - and plays five of the next seven on the road as well, with the lone home games in that span against the Rockets and the Boston Celtics.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta), NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE HAWKS (1-6): Atlanta lost plenty of offense with Paul Millsap, Dwight Howard and Tim Hardaway Jr. departing over the summer, but at least point guard Dennis Schroder is still around. Schroder returned from a two-game absence due to an ankle injury on Friday and showed no signs of any lingering issues while combining for 41 points on 15-of-32 shooting and 14 assists in losses to Denver and Milwaukee. Kent Bazemore is enjoying an expanded role as well and is averaging 13.1 points but shooting only 36.6 percent from the floor, including 31.8 percent from beyond the arc.

ABOUT THE 76ERS (3-4): "The process" is growing around center Joel Embiid and Simmons, who are already developing a connection two weeks into their first season together. Embiid delivered 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting, nine rebounds and five assists in the win over Houston while Simmons tacked on 24 points on 10-of-15, nine assists and seven boards. “Those two guys together (have) been really good,” Philadelphia coach Brett Brown told reporters. "Our wins have come on the road, and those two players especially have been excellent together."

                            BUZZER BEATERS

                            1. 76ers PF Amir Johnson recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds on Monday.

                            2. Hawks PF Ersan Ilyasova (knee) is out for Wednesday and will miss at least the next week.

                            3. Atlanta took the last seven in the series, including four in a row in Philadelphia.

                            PREDICTION: 76ers 109, Hawks 103

The Washington Wizards survived a West Coast trip with two wins in four outings and return home for six of the next seven, starting with a visit from the rejuvenated Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night. The Wizards lost consecutive games against the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State before rolling to a 110-83 victory at Sacramento on Sunday while draining 17-of-34 from 3-point range.

“It was probably the best that we’ve played on both ends of the court,” Washington coach Scott Brooks told reporters after his team held the Kings to 39 percent shooting from the floor. “Hopefully we can continue that trend.” All-Star point guard John Wall, who had struggled shooting in the first five games, made 7-of-12 from the field against Sacramento and will compete against one of the league’s most promising young guards in Devin Booker of Phoenix. Booker scored a season-high 34 in a tough loss at Portland on Saturday and followed that up with 32 - one day after his 21st birthday - in a 122-114 victory at Brooklyn on Tuesday as the Suns improved to 3-1 under interim coach Jay Triano. Booker averaged 17.8 points while shooting 41.2 percent from the field in the first five games of the season before erupting the last two contests.

ABOUT THE SUNS (3-4): Mike James, a 27-year-old rookie guard who has been playing overseas, has made quite an early impression with Phoenix and recorded a career-high 24 points in the win over Brooklyn while adding five assists in 29 minutes. James, who is averaging 13 points and had a season-high four steals Tuesday, picked up some of the slack since guard Eric Bledsoe was banished from the team, and has started the last four games. TJ Warren scored 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter against Brooklyn and Tyson Chandler reached double figures (13) in rebounding for the third time in four games.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (4-2): Wall leads the team in scoring (21.7) and assists (10.3) despite shooting just 39.3 percent from the field in the early going while Bradley Beal and Otto Porter Jr. are each scoring at least 18 per game. Beal, who avoided a suspension for his fracas with Draymond Green in the loss at Golden State on Friday, is averaging 19.5 points and Porter (18.7) has connected on 16-of-25 shots the last two games - improving to 55.7 percent from the floor overall. Center Marcin Gortat (12.3 points) tops the team in rebounds (9.7) and is shooting a robust 57.1 percent from the field.

                                OVERTIME

                                1. Phoenix SF Josh Jackson, the fourth pick in the 2017 draft, is just 9-for-33 from the field over the last three contests since scoring a season-high 15 versus Sacramento.

                                2. The Wizards have swept a pair of games from the Suns in each of the last two seasons, but all four wins came by a combined amount of 19 points.

                                3. Washington PF Markieff Morris, who has not played this season due to an abdomen injury, practiced Tuesday and could make his debut as early as Friday against Cleveland, provided he is medically cleared and serves his one-game suspension Wednesday for leaving the bench during the melee against Golden State.

                                PREDICTION: Wizards 112, Suns 98
