          Preview: Washington at Stanford

          Gracenote
          Nov 7, 2017

Eighth-ranked Washington knows it must win out to have a chance at reaching the four-team College Football Playoff as it enters Friday's Pac-12 road contest at Stanford. The Huskies are ranked ninth in the CFP rankings and lead the Pac-12 North Division by a half-game over Washington State and Stanford.

Washington features the nation's top-ranked defense (240.9 yards per game) and stands sixth in rushing defense (91.1) as it attempts to slow down Cardinal star Bryce Love. The junior has rushed for 1,456 yards -- second nationally behind San Diego State's Rashaad Penny (1,602) -- and has recorded 11 runs of 50 or more yards this season. "He's just one of those guys that's really fast, strong, keeps his legs going at all times," Huskies coach Chris Petersen said of Love. "He's hard to tackle. He bounces off, runs through hard tackles, really powerful. Obviously, he's got really good vision." Stanford's special teams unit will have their collective eyes on Huskies senior punt returner Dante Pettis, who has four return touchdowns this season and an NCAA-record nine during his career.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Washington -5.5

ABOUT WASHINGTON (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12): Junior running back Myles Gaskin (918 yards, 10 touchdowns) has topped 100 yards in four of the past six games and is on pace to top 1,300 rushing yards for the third straight season. Junior quarterback Jake Browning is tied for the school record of 75 touchdown passes (Keith Price, 2010-13), with 16 of them coming this season against just five interceptions. Junior inside linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven has registered a team-leading 59 tackles while senior Keishawn Bierria matched the school record of eight career fumble recoveries.

ABOUT STANFORD (6-3, 5-2): Love was held to a season-low 69 yards last Saturday in a loss to Washington State but still managed a 52-yard scoring run to keep his streak alive of having at least one 50-yard gain in each game this season. Redshirt freshman quarterback K.J. Costello is making his second career start and he struggled in the snowy conditions in Pullman, Wash., by going 9-for-20 passing for 105 yards and one interception. The Cardinal allow an average of 21.3 points per game but the defense features two standouts in junior strong safety Justin Reid (tied for second nationally with five interceptions) and senior defensive tackle Harrison Phillips (team-best figures of 68 tackles and five sacks).

          EXTRA POINTS

          1. Washington posted a 44-6 victory over Stanford last season for only its third win in the past 12 meetings.

          2. Stanford coach David Shaw has 70 victories -- one behind legendary Glenn "Pop" Warner (1924-32) for most in school history.

          3. Gaskin's 34 career rushing touchdowns is tied for second in school history with school legend Napoleon Kaufman (1991-94).

          PREDICTION: Washington 26, Stanford 23

                      Friday, November 10

NCAAF Game of the Day: Washington at Stanford betting preview and odds

Washington Huskies at Stanford Cardinal (+6, 44.5)

                      TV:
                      10:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1.

                      LINE HISTORY:
Washington opened as eight-point road favorites but as of Thursday night that spread was down to six points. The total hit betting boards at 47 and was bet down to 44.5 heading into game day.

                      INJURY REPORT:

Washington - WR Quinten Pounds (Out For Season, Knee), TE Hunter Bryant (Out Indefinitely, Leg), OL Trey Adams (Out For Season, Knee), DB Jordan Miller (Out For Season, Ankle), WR Chico McClatcher (Out For Season, Ankle), DB Byron Murphy (Late Nov, Foot), TE David Ajamu (Out For Season, Leg).

Stanford - RB Bryce Love (Probable, Ankle), LB Curtis Robinson (Probable, Undisclosed), T Walker Little (Probable, Undisclosed), CB Alijah Holder (Out For Season, Knee), CB Terrence Alexander (Out Indefinitely, Forearm), LB Sean Barton (Out For Season, Knee).

                      ABOUT WASHINGTON (8-1 SU, 6-3 ATS, 3-6 O/U):
Junior running back Myles Gaskin (918 yards, 10 touchdowns) has topped 100 yards in four of the past six games and is on pace to top 1,300 rushing yards for the third straight season.

                      ABOUT STANFORD (6-3 SU, 3-5-1 ATS, 3-6 O/U):
Love was held to a season-low 69 yards last Saturday in a loss to Washington State but still managed a 52-yard scoring run to keep his streak alive of having at least one 50-yard gain in each game this season.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Huskies are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 conference games.
                      * Cardinal are 12-3 ATS in their last 15 games following a straight up loss.
                      * Under is 8-1-1 in Huskies last 10 conference games.

                      * Home team is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.

                      CONSENSUS:
The road favorites from Washington are picking up 59 percent of the action on the spread and Over is getting 61 percent of the totals wagers.

                        Preview: Panthers at Sabres

                        Gracenote
                        Nov 9, 2017

The Buffalo Sabres created a blueprint last time out of what is needed for them to win consistently, and hope to match that effort when the struggling Florida Panthers pay a visit Friday night. The Sabres posted 15 shots in the first period and carried that momentum throughout to score a 3-1 triumph against Washington on Tuesday for only their fifth victory in 15 contests to open the season.

“It’s so nice and also frustrating to see because when we play like this, we’re just a hell of a hockey team I think,” Buffalo goalie Robin Lehner told reporters. “But then we get away from it. I just really hope we all understand that’s the way we’ve got to play.” The Sabres hope to put together another solid effort on both ends of the ice and take advantage of the fading Panthers, who have lost five straight games and allowed 33 goals in their past seven. Florida allowed at least 38 shots throughout its losing streak, two of which ended after regulation, and has not won since scoring a season-high eight against Anaheim on Oct. 26. The Panthers have sunk to the bottom of the Eastern Conference with their slide and have won only one of six games on the road in the early going.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Florida, MSG Buffalo

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (4-8-2): Florida is still tied for sixth in the league in scoring through Wednesday’s contests (3.43) despite a 3-1 loss at Carolina last time out, but sits last in the league in goals-against per contest (4.14). Center Vincent Trocheck has posted goals in three straight games and shares the team lead in points with left wing Jonathan Huberdeau at 16. Roberto Luongo, who needs one victory to pass Curtis Joseph (454) for fourth on the NHL’s all-time list, has turned aside 84 of 91 shots in two games since returning from a hand injury.

ABOUT THE SABRES (5-8-2): Buffalo could take some pressure off its offense if it can find some success on the power play, which has converted 1-of-25 opportunities over the last eight contests. Left wing Evander Kane leads the team with nine goals, including three in the last three games, and 15 points while Benoit Pouliot boasts three tallies and an assist in his past three contests. Nathan Beaulieu (upper-body) and Josh Gorges (lower-body) could return against Florida while fellow blueliner Rasmus Ristolainen (upper-body) was downgraded to week-to-week.

                        OVERTIME

                        1. Buffalo C Jack Eichel had four goals in the first nine games and has been shut out in the past six.

                        2. The Panthers recalled F Dryden Hunt from the American Hockey League and sent F Chase Balisy down.

                        3. The teams split four games last season with each team winning a pair on home ice.

                        PREDICTION: Panthers 4, Sabres 3

Toronto Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock told reporters that Auston Matthews is making progress from his upper-body injury, but that doesn't mean he's rushing the reigning Calder Trophy recipient back to the ice. After missing the first game of his young career, Matthews' availability is in question for Friday's opener of a home-and-home series against the Boston Bruins at Air Canada Centre.

"When he's ready to go, when he's out there skating around, we'll know he's a day closer," Babcock said of the 20-year-old Matthews, who leads the team in goals (10) and points (19). "The kid wants to play hockey. It's not serious, but it's something we've got to get fixed." Nazem Kadri helped Toronto fix its recent troubles of losing five of six by scoring twice in a 4-3 win over Vegas on Monday before tallying again two nights later in a 4-2 victory over Minnesota. David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron each scored a goal and set up another in a 4-2 setback at the New York Rangers, resulting in Boston's fourth loss in six games. Pastrnak has 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in his last 11 contests while Bergeron has 10 (three goals, seven assists) in his last six.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), TSN4 (Toronto)

ABOUT THE BRUINS (6-5-3): Coach Bruce Cassidy showed considerable fire along the bench as he liberally gave his players the business during Boston's game against New York, with the match seemingly being lit after his team's painfully slow start. "We want to see the urgency at 7 or 8 (p.m.) when the puck drops - not when we're behind a couple (goals)," Cassidy said. "That's the message we're trying to get through and hopefully it sinks in Friday because we've got another tough building." Cassidy wasn't sure on Thursday if Brad Marchand would answer the bell in the opener versus the Maple leafs as he deals with an upper-body injury.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (10-7-0): Connor Brown scored and set up a goal versus the Wild to increase his point total to five (four goals, one assists) in five games. Fellow forward William Nylander would love that type of production, however he insists he isn't dwelling on his current nine-game goal drought. "I think I've had the opportunities, but maybe just haven't been able to get the shot off," the 21-year-old Nylander said. "... Goals will come when they come, there's no point wasting energy (worrying about) that."

                            OVERTIME

                            1. Cassidy told reporters that he is leaning toward Anton Khudobin in net on Friday before turning to fellow G Tuukka Rask at home.

                            2. Toronto LW Patrick Marleau has scored two goals and set up two others over his last five games.

                            3. The Original Six rivals will reconvene in Boston for Saturday's tilt before steering clear of each other until a Feb. 3 contest at TD Garden.

PREDICTION: Maple Leafs 4, Bruins 2

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals traditionally are two of the higher scoring teams in the NHL, but a few decorated players are enduring considerable offensive woes. Penguins superstar captain Sidney Crosby, who is as decorated as they come, aims to end a nine-game goal drought on Friday as the Metropolitan Division rivals clash at Capital One Arena.

"There's been some chances there, some posts and things like that, but I can generate a little bit more," said Crosby, who will play in his 800th career game on Friday. The two-time Hart Trophy recipient notched his 61st point (20 goals, 41 assists) in 42 career games versus Washington with an assist in Pittsburgh's 3-2 win on Oct. 11, and gashed the Capitals for two goals and five assists in the Penguins' seven-game, second-round series victory last spring. Washington has a pair of stellar forwards mired in point droughts, as T.J. Oshie has failed to dent the scoresheet in eight games while Nicklas Backstrom has zero points in his last seven. "I realize that I've got to be better and I've got to create more chances, produce and be one of the leading guys on the team," Backstrom said.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, Sportsnet, TVAS, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh, NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (9-6-2): Patric Hornqvist scored to seal the win in Game 7 versus the Capitals last spring and had a power-play goal and assist in his season debut against Washington at Capital One Arena. "We have a lot of good memories there from last year, when we won that Game 7. This year, we played a really good game there too," the 30-year-old Swede said. Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel didn't dent the scoresheet in the first meeting with Washington, but each scored a goal and set up two others in Tuesday's 3-1 victory over Arizona.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (8-7-1): Alex Ovechkin scored a goal for the third straight contest on Tuesday, but Washington failed to muster anything else offensively and saw its three-game winning streak come to a halt with a 3-1 setback to Buffalo. The three-time Hart Trophy winner also scored in the team's first encounter to give him 31 goals and 21 assists in 49 career games versus Pittsburgh. Former Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik has notched an assist in two of his last three contests after setting up just one goal in his previous 13.

                                OVERTIME

                                1. Washington G Braden Holtby has permitted just nine goals during his four-game winning streak.

                                2. Pittsburgh, which boasts the third-ranked power play, has scored at least one goal with the man advantage in 13 of 17 games this season.

                                3. The Capitals have just three wins at home this season, with only Carolina, Buffalo, Detroit and Arizona having fewer.
