      Preview: Hurricanes at Blue Jackets

      Gracenote
      Nov 9, 2017

The Carolina Hurricanes finally put an end to their four-game slide, even though it came against the worst team in the Eastern Conference. The Columbus Blue Jackets will be trying to avert a four-game skid of their own Friday night when they square off against the visiting Hurricanes, who are mired in last place in the Metropolitan Division.

Despite its current spot in the standings, Carolina believes things will turn around after outshooting opponents by a staggering 182-107 margin over the past four games. "If we continue to play like that -- we're getting tons of shots ... I think we're going to score goals and have success," Hurricanes center Derek Ryan said after Tuesday's 3-1 victory over the Florida Panthers. The Blue Jackets were singed for four third-period goals in a 5-3 loss at the New York Rangers on Monday night and allowed two tallies in the final 20 minutes of a 3-1 setback to Nashville 24 hours later. “What I like is we have two days here (before the next game) and we always seem to regroup well and get ready for big ones like this weekend,” Columbus forward Nick Foligno said.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Carolina, FSN Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (5-5-3): Defenseman Brett Pesce has missed the past three games with a concussion but could be ready to return to the lineup after the team sent rookie blue-liner Roland McKeown to Charlotte of the American Hockey League on Thursday. McKeown took the place of Pesce in the lineup against Florida and collected a pair of assists to register his first career points in his second NHL game. Scott Darling has earned the start in the past two games in goal and turned aside 53 of 55 shots.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (9-6-1): Rookie Pierre-Luc Dubois scored in his NHL debut but then muddled through a 14-game goal drought before wowing his teammates with the lone tally against Nashville after stripping perennial All-Star defenseman P.K Subban of the puck. “That was pretty special,” forward Cam Atkinson said of the goal by the 2016 No. 3 overall draft pick. “That’s a prime-time play right there, a prime-time goal.” Atkinson played more than 23 1/2 minutes and had four shots on goal in his return from a four-game absence.

      EXTRA POINTS

      1. Columbus owns the league's worst power-play unit, converting on only 5 of 48 chances.

      2. Carolina activated F Lee Stempniak from injured reserve and sent him to its AHL affiliate for a conditioning stint.

      3. Blue Jackets G Sergei Bobrovsky is 9-5-0 with a 2.11 goals-against average versus the Hurricanes.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 3, Hurricanes 2

          Preview: Islanders at Stars

          Gracenote
          Nov 9, 2017

The Dallas Stars have won all three matchups against Eastern Conference opponents this season and look to keep that streak intact when they host the New York Islanders on Friday night. It's the first of a back-to-back for the Islanders, which will wrap up a stretch in which they played 13 of 15 games against teams from the Western Conference.

Dallas is coming off a 4-1 home loss to Winnipeg -- its second three-goal defeat to the Jets in a five-day span -- and has allowed at least four goals in four of the past seven games. Stars forwards Radek Faksa, Tyler Pitlick and Brett Ritchie missed Monday's loss to the Jets but all three will be evaluated at Friday morning's skate. New York recalled Alan Quine from its NHL affiliate in Bridgeport and had him centering the third line between Andrew Ladd and Anthony Beauvillier at Thursday's practice. The Islanders have had considerable success against Dallas over the past four seasons, posting a 6-1-1 mark in eight meetings.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New York), FSN Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (8-5-2): Center Mathew Barzal continues to make a big impression in his rookie season, registering a pair of goals and nine assists during a six-game point streak. The No. 16 overall pick in the 2015 draft, Barzal is meshing with linemate Jordan Eberle, who has scored five goals in his past five games. “Maybe I’m catching some people by surprise, but this is the best league in the world and these are the best defensemen in the world,” Barzal said. “I’m just trying to do what I can to create chances, create space for my linemates.”

ABOUT THE STARS (8-7-0): The trio of captain Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, and Alexander Radulov has accounted for half of Dallas' 42 goals but coach Ken Hitchcock decided to break up his potent top line. Seguin was moved Mattias Janmark and Devin Shore while Benn centered Radulov and Gemel Smith at practice Thursday. "We just feel right now that we are playing at a high level and not being able to beat the big boys," Hitchcock said. "And in order to beat the big boys, I feel like if we get more people participating it will give us a better opportunity."

          OVERTIME

          1. Dallas' power play has converted on 8 of 18 opportunities over the past five games.

          2. New York placed LW Nikolay Kulemin on injured reserve.

          3. Stars D Marc Methot (lower body) is expected to miss Friday's game.

          PREDICTION: Stars 4, Islanders 3

              Preview: Jets at Golden Knights

              Gracenote
              Nov 9, 2017

The Winnipeg Jets are picking an opportune time to pay a visit to Vegas -- riding a hot streak in which they have lost only once in regulation over the past 12 games. The surging Jets have points in eight consecutive games as they prepare to face the expansion Golden Knights on Friday night in the second stop of a three-game road trip.

Winnipeg opened the season by giving up 13 goals in a pair of lopsided drubbings but the team is 8-1-3 since and riding a wave of good vibes. “Every team in this league is great and you can’t expect to win games, but we’re comfortable with our game, we’re confident in our game and when we put a full 60 minutes together, we know we’re a tough team to beat,” center Mark Scheifele said. Vegas was the feel-good story of the league after winning eight of its first nine games, but it returns home after winning just once on a six-game road trip (1-4-1). “It was a great trip,” Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant insisted. “We only got three points out of it, but I thought we deserved a lot more.”

              TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Vegas)

ABOUT THE JETS (8-3-3): Scheifele scored twice and captain Blake Wheeler collected four assists in Monday's 4-1 win at Dallas, continuing a sensational five-game stretch by the duo. Scheifele has six goals and four assists in that span while Wheeler has amassed 13 points, including two games with four apiece. "I think we could say probably right from the day those two guys got together there was some real good chemistry," coach Paul Maurice said. "Blake is always driven to get better and Mark's like that, too."

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (9-5-1): Vegas reached an agreement with Vadim Shipachyov that allows the Russian to be placed on the NHL voluntary list and return home to play in the Kontinental Hockey League. "Vadim did not want to put in any time at the American Hockey League level, and he did not want to be traded to another club, which we could have done," general manager George McPhee said. "He just wanted to go home, so we've accommodated him and wish him well." Maxime Lagace will make his sixth straight start in goal.

              OVERTIME

              1. Jets G Connor Hellebuyck has yet to lose in regulation, posting an 8-0-2 mark and 2.12 goals-against average.

              2. Golden Knights F David Perron has four assists during a three-game point streak.

              3. Winnipeg's power play has converted on six of nine chances over the past three games.

PREDICTION: Jets 5, Golden Knights 3

                          Preview: Hawks at Pistons

The Detroit Pistons are quietly emerging as a power in the Eastern Conference and will try to extend their latest winning streak to four straight games when they host the Atlanta Hawks on Friday. The Pistons are winners of six of their last seven and rolled over the Indiana Pacers 114-97 on Wednesday.

Detroit is showing off the depth of its roster and had 11 players score in Wednesday's win, including a combined 22 points off the bench from guards Ish Smith and Langston Galloway. "We're only 11 games in and literally all 14 guys have made significant contributions at one point or another," Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy told reporters. "Players hear it all the time: 'Everybody's going to get their opportunity.' We're only 11 games in and it's come true." The Hawks are trying to spread the opportunity around as well as they search for any combination of players to support point guard Dennis Schroder. Atlanta might be starting to figure it out after winning at Cleveland and taking the Boston Celtics down to the wire in a 110-107 setback on Monday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE HAWKS (2-9): Atlanta won its first game and then dropped eight in a row before winning at Cleveland over the weekend, and the offense took center stage in the last two games. The Hawks shot 47.7 percent from the floor in the 117-115 win over the Cavaliers and shot 48.1 percent, including 13-of-26 from 3-point range, in the loss to the Boston Celtics, who own the NBA's best scoring defense. Schroder was at the center of the offensive breakthrough in both games, totaling 51 points on 18-of-33 shooting, and is averaging 22.6 points and 6.6 assists.

ABOUT THE PISTONS (8-3): One of the most surprising aspects of Detroit's hot start was the solid production at the free-throw line from center Andre Drummond. The career 38.8-percent free-throw shooter went 30-of-40 from the line in the first 10 games before slipping up with an 0-of-7 performance in Wednesday's win. "At times the missed free throws messed with him a little bit," Van Gundy told reporters of Drummond. "The only thing we talked to him about is, he's a great player, keep your head in the game. Be solid. Play your game and help us get a win. Nothing else matters."

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. Pistons SF Stanley Johnson (hip) sat out Wednesday and is day-to-day.

                          2. Hawks SG Marco Belinelli scored 19 points on Monday after going scoreless on 0-of-9 shooting in the previous two contests.

                          3. The Pistons took two of the three meetings last season, including the lone matchup in Detroit 118-95 on Jan. 18.

                          PREDICTION: Pistons 112, Hawks 101

Even as the injuries mount for the Boston Celtics, so do the wins, and the hottest team in the NBA seeks an 11th consecutive victory Friday night against the visiting Charlotte Hornets. Playing without center Al Horford (concussion protocol) and losing star rookie Jayson Tatum (ankle) in the second quarter, the Celtics worked their way past the rival Los Angeles Lakers by a 107-96 margin Wednesday.

Their 10-game run, which came on the heels of an 0-2 start that included the loss of prize free-agent signee Gordon Hayward, features four victories at home and nine in which Boston's opponent was held to 96 points or fewer. "We're just trying to do our best to stay healthy, man," guard Kyrie Irving told reporters. "That's it. Hopefully everything's alright with Jayson (Tatum), hope everything is alright with Al." The Hornets are trending in the other direction, dropping three in a row to begin their four-game road trip while giving up an average of 112.7 points. Three players scored 21 points but Charlotte allowed the New York Knicks to shoot 60 percent from the field in a 118-113 loss at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.

ABOUT THE HORNETS (5-6): Rookie Malik Monk joined veteran stars Dwight Howard and Kemba Walker among the 21-point scorers in Tuesday's loss, and the one-and-done Kentucky product is proving to be a spark plug - albeit an inconsistent one - off the bench. "He's learning the NBA game. It's a big adjustment," Hornets coach Steve Clifford told reporters. "I know his numbers aren't very good, but his progress has been there." Clifford was referring to some of the rocky shooting efforts Monk has had, but the 19-year-old has also hit five 3-pointers twice in the last four games and is averaging 12.6 points in 21.6 minutes in Charlotte's five wins.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (10-2): Horford's absence allowed big man Aron Baynes to score a career high-tying 21 points to go along with eight rebounds and three assists. "We have such great creators on this team, I found myself in the right position," Baynes told the media. "I was just trying to make the right play and trying to finish as best I could, so it's a compliment to the other guys on the team getting me the ball in great position." Without Tatum (52.9 percent 3-point shooter) for most of the game and Horford (47.4) for all of it, the Celtics shot a season-worst 24.1 percent from long distance.

                              1. Tatum is expected to have tests done on his ankle Thursday.

                              2. Howard is averaging 17.8 points on 66.7 percent shooting and 10.5 rebounds over a four-game span.

                              3. The Celtics swept the four-game season series in 2016-17.

                              PREDICTION: Celtics 105, Hornets 97
