    Preview: Pacers at Bulls

    Gracenote
    Nov 9, 2017

The Chicago Bulls began the season with drama when Bobby Portis punched Nikola Mirotic in the face, hospitalizing Mirotic and earning himself an eight-game suspension. Portis is back in the lineup and will once again try to make fans think of him for his exploits on the court when the Bulls host the Indiana Pacers on Friday.

Portis returned from his suspension at Toronto on Tuesday and delivered 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting, 13 rebounds and four assists in 24 minutes off the bench in a 119-114 loss to the Raptors. "Just tried to go out there and play the best I could and have fun," Portis told reporters. "It's been a long time since I played the game of basketball. I'm not going to stop being myself; situation happened. But at the end of the day, I have to be myself no matter who is around, who is my teammate, what team I'm on." The Pacers are losers of four in a row following a 5-3 start and allowed an average of 115 points in the four setbacks. "It sucks that we haven't won in a while, but it's part of the game and it's a part of the NBA," Indiana guard Victor Oladipo told reporters. "How teams respond separates the good teams from the great teams, and we've got to figure out what kind of team we want to be."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Indiana, NBCS Chicago

ABOUT THE PACERS (5-7): Indiana ranks 28th in the NBA in defensive field-goal percentage entering play on Thursday, allowing opponents to go off at 48.3 percent from the floor, including 37.2 percent from 3-point range. The Pacers allowed the Detroit Pistons to shoot 51.8 percent from the floor and knock down 12-of-27 from beyond the arc in a 114-97 setback on Wednesday. "They made some plays, and once again, we didn't get the stops that we needed," Indiana coach Nate McMillan told reporters. "It looked like we were a little fatigued tonight and just didn't have enough."

ABOUT THE BULLS (2-7): Portis' return did not solve all of Chicago's issues on the defensive end, and coach Fred Hoiberg was not happy with the effort in the first half of the loss. "It shouldn't take me ripping their (butts) at halftime to come out and play with that type of effort and intensity," Hoiberg told reporters. "(The Raptors) got anything they wanted in the first half. We didn't take one thing away. It was too easy. ... Awful effort defensively." The Bulls are actually one of the better defensive teams in the league, limiting opponents to 100.6 points and 44.3 percent shooting.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Pacers C Domantas Sabonis (calf contusion) missed the last two games and is day-to-day.

    2. Bulls C Robin Lopez (knee) sat out practice on Wednesday and is questionable for Friday.

    3. The home team took each of the four meetings last season.

    PREDICTION: Pacers 109, Bulls 98

        Preview: Clippers at Thunder

        Gracenote
        Nov 10, 2017

The Los Angeles Clippers are tumbling in the wrong direction after a 4-0 start and look to reverse their fortunes when they visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday. Los Angeles has dropped three straight games and five of its last six while the Thunder are also spiraling downward with four consecutive setbacks.

Both teams held long meetings after their latest defeats, as Oklahoma City again displayed chemistry issues while suffering a 102-94 road loss against the Denver Nuggets on Thursday. "It was just good to get everything out on the table," Thunder forward Paul George said after the postgame meeting. "Especially where we're at right now, it's no good if we're bottling it up." Los Angeles allowed 15 3-pointers in Tuesday's 120-107 loss to the San Antonio Spurs to continue a recent trend of subpar defensive performances. Making matters worse it that pesky point guard Patrick Beverley (knee) was sent back to Los Angeles and will sit out at least two games, a bad development in that Beverley has always willing to mix it up with Oklahoma City star Russell Westbrook.

        TV:
9 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FSN Oklahoma

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (5-5): Tensions ran high during a players-only meeting that lasted nearly 30 minutes after the loss to the Spurs. Some of the dialogue had to with the shoddy defense that has allowed an average of 115.2 points over the past five games, including 141 in a loss to the Golden State Warriors. "We have no excuse to be honest," guard Austin Rivers told reporters. "We have the best defensive five in the NBA. We have the best defensive point guard (Beverley) in the NBA. I consider myself an elite, top five shooting-defensive guard in the league. We have too many good defenders. We should be a top five defensive team without a doubt."

        ABOUT THE THUNDER (4-7):
Getting badly outplayed in the fourth quarter by the Nuggets prompted a postgame team meeting of more than 30 minutes as a revamped Oklahoma City squad continues to underachieve. Offseason acquisitions Carmelo Anthony and George are still trying to fit in with reigning MVP Westbrook and the loss to the Nuggets was another example of the failure of the trio to mesh as George took just one shot in the final stanza. While Anthony (24,385 career points) scored 28 to pass Allen Iverson (24,368) and move into 24th place on the NBA all-time scoring list, Westbrook (6-of-22) and George (6-of-14) tallied only 13 points apiece and Westbrook had a season-low five assists.

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. The teams split four meetings last season with each winning once on the road.

        2. Oklahoma City C Steven Adams (calf) departed late in Thursday's game and is questionable to play versus the Clippers.

        3. SF Danilo Gallinari (hip) will sit out for the second straight contest, while Rivers (ankle) is questionable after being injured in Thursday's practice.

        PREDICTION: Thunder 114, Clippers 112

            Preview: Bucks at Spurs

            Gracenote
            Nov 9, 2017

The San Antonio Spurs are winners of three in a row and are coming off one of their best offensive performances of the young season. The Spurs will try to maintain that level on offense and pick things up on the other end when they host Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.

San Antonio shot 53.6 percent from the floor in Tuesday's 120-107 win over Los Angeles but allowed the Clippers to shoot 51.2 percent. "We've still got a long way to go defensively," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters after the win. "We made shots tonight. Had 33 assists, which is a great, unselfish game. Really good. And a lot of people participated. Making shots does make things simpler, but the ball moved, the pace was better, but our defense still needs to get better. That'll take some time." The Bucks have a few things to work out on the defensive end as well after allowing the Cleveland Cavaliers to shoot 50 percent from the field in a 124-119 loss on Tuesday -- their fourth consecutive setback. "Just got to stop fouling," Antetokounmpo told reporters after the loss in Cleveland. "I think we did a bad job giving them easy fouls. ... We've got to do a better job of not fouling and being solid on defense."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), CW35 (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE BUCKS (4-6): Milwaukee hopes to have Eric Bledsoe in uniform on Friday after acquiring the point guard from the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday in exchange for veteran center Greg Monroe and draft picks. Bledsoe was benched by the Suns after the third game for publicly displaying his displeasure with the organization and averaged 15.7 points and three assists in those first three contests after putting up career highs of 21.1 points and 6.3 assists in 66 games last season. "He's a great player, he's a great guy, too," Antetokounmpo told reporters of Bledsoe. "I'm looking forward to meeting him in San Antonio. ... I think he's going to help the team and I think he's going to make the game easier for everybody."

ABOUT THE SPURS (7-4): San Antonio would have fewer problems on the defensive end with Kawhi Leonard on the floor, but the 2015-16 NBA Defensive Player of the Year has yet to play this season while dealing with a quadriceps injury. "He's just coming along more slowly for whatever reason," Popovich told reporters in comparing Leonard's rehab to point guard Tony Parker (quad), who also has yet to play this season. "It's just been more difficult for him to get through the rehab routine. So, his body hasn't reacted the same way as Tony. I wouldn't want (Leonard) to go right from rehab to jumping on the court. He's got to go three-on-three, five-on-five, feel comfortable because in the end, that confidence is what's going to ... anybody who's been out for any length of time has to get that back; even if the doctors say, 'Yep, you're ready to go.' You're really not until you're mentally ready to go." LaMarcus Aldridge is leading the team in Leonard's absence with averages of 22.6 points and 8.3 rebounds.

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. Spurs SF Rudy Gay matched a season high with 22 points on Tuesday and reached the 20-point plateau for the second time in three games.

            2. Bucks PG Malcolm Brogdon is averaging 21 points in the last three games and is 9-of-15 from 3-point range in that span.

            3. The teams split two meetings last season, with Milwaukee earning a 109-107 win at San Antonio on Jan. 10.

            PREDICTION: Spurs 115, Bucks 108

                Preview: Magic at Suns

                Gracenote
                Nov 9, 2017

The Orlando Magic took a brief detour back into their offensive inconsistency after a sizzling start but pulled out of it with a win on Wednesday, just in time to generate some positive momentum prior to a four-game road trip out west. The Magic will try to make it back-to-back wins and get the trip started on the right foot when they visit the Phoenix Suns on Friday.

Orlando averaged 85.5 points in home losses to the Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics but got point guard Elfrid Payton (hamstring) back from an eight-game absence on Wednesday against New York and watched him steady the offense while collecting 11 points and 11 assists. "A sight for sore eyes -- that's what it was for me seeing Elfrid Payton back out there," Magic coach Frank Vogel told reporters. "We know that he and Aaron (Gordon) have great lob chemistry, so with Elfrid being back we put that in as the first play, for him to look for Aaron, and he executed it well. He just carried it throughout the whole game, really." The Suns waved goodbye to one of their point guards this week by trading away disgruntled veteran Eric Bledsoe but suffered their fourth straight loss 126-115 at home to the Miami Heat on Wednesday. Phoenix allowed the Heat to shoot 53.1 percent from the floor and are hoping the return from the Bledsoe trade -- veteran center Greg Monroe -- can help provide some defensive stability once he recovers from soreness in his left calf.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Orlando), FS Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE MAGIC (7-4): Orlando was without both Payton and fellow point guard D.J. Augustin (hamstring), and the lack of a facilitator was apparent as the team combined to shoot 38.4 percent from the field against the Bulls and Celtics. The Magic shot 53.8 percent from the floor in Wednesday's 112-99 win, with Gordon, Nikola Vucevic and Evan Fournier going a combined 26-of-43. "Missing two point guards, that was tough, but it was so good to have (Payton) back, especially that first unit who is very comfortable playing with him because he knows everybody's comfort zones and sweet spots," Vucevic told the team's website. "He got us all the ball early and put us in good positions, so it gave us a huge boost."

ABOUT THE SUNS (4-8): Bledsoe's departure leaves 21-year-old shooting guard Devin Booker as the unquestioned leader of the young team, and he is making it his responsibility to make plays for his teammates. Booker led the team with six assists to go with his team-high 30 points on Wednesday and is drawing praise from his older teammates. "I think he knows there's so much attention and if he doesn't make the passes, the double-team will come harder," veteran forward Jared Dudley told the team's website of Booker. "For his age, his IQ is very high, the game is slowing down for him. It usually takes your third year to slow down, it has been. Not only does he have the green light, he has a confidence when he chooses his spots."

                BUZZER BEATERS

                1. Suns C Tyson Chandler (back spasms) sat out Wednesday and is day-to-day.

                2. Fournier went 3-of-6 from 3-point range on Wednesday after going 3-of-14 in the previous two games.

                3. Orlando snapped a four-game losing streak in the series with a 109-103 win in Phoenix on March 17.

                PREDICTION: Magic 116, Suns 109

                    Preview: Heat at Jazz

                    Gracenote
                    Nov 10, 2017

The Utah Jazz are struggling to rediscover their defensive identity and will take on a Miami Heat team that is coming off its best offensive effort of the season when the teams meet in Salt Lake City on Friday. After opening the season with a 5-3 record while holding every opponent to 103 points or fewer, the Jazz have dropped three in a row while giving up an average of 116.7.

They were a bit better on that end of the floor against Philadelphia on Tuesday, but shot a season-low 30.3 percent in a 104-97 loss. "Right now, I think we're a little too much in our head," forward Thabo Sefolosha told reporters. "We worry about not making shots and things like that. But those things take care of themselves. I think it's mostly communication on the defensive end." The Heat hope to provide a similar challenge after posting a 126-115 win at Phoenix on Wednesday to improve to 2-2 on their six-game road trip. Goran Dragic had a season-high 29 points as Miami shot 53.1 percent and outrebounded the Suns by a 53-34 margin.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Miami), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah)

ABOUT THE HEAT (5-6): Dragic has scored in double figures and has at least one 3-pointer in each of Miami's first 11 games, and he hit all 10 of his free throws in Wednesday's win. "Greatness in this league is consistency, and Goran, you can book it every single night what you're going to get from him," coach Erik Spoelstra told the media. "He had a little bit extra punch to him in this game." Fellow star Hassan Whiteside has run counter to Dragic with a very inconsistent stretch, but he notched his fourth double-double in six games this season with 23 points and 10 boards versus Phoenix.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (5-6): Rookie Donovan Mitchell led the woeful shooting effort against Philadelphia with a dismal 3-for-21 showing, while point guard Ricky Rubio continued to slump following a torrid start. Rubio, never a serious perimeter threat in six seasons in Minnesota, buried 11-of-21 3-pointers in a recent three-game stretch while averaging 23.7 points, but he is 1-for-14 from long range and shooting 25.7 percent overall during the losing streak. Fellow starting guard Rodney Hood has also struggled with accuracy of late, making 15-of-54 shots in his last four contests.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Heat PF James Johnson is averaging 16.3 points on 56.4 percent shooting off the bench during the road trip.

                    2. Jazz C Rudy Gobert entered Thursday leading the NBA in blocked shots per game (2.55) after swatting three against Philadelphia.

                    3. The teams split two meetings last season, with the road team winning both times.

                    PREDICTION: Jazz 106, Heat 100

                        Preview: Nets at Trail Blazers

                        Nov 10, 2017

Damian Lillard will try to bounce back from his worst offensive effort of the season when his Portland Trail Blazers continue a six-game homestand against the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. Lillard had a season-low 12 points while shooting 4-for-16 - including 0-for-5 from the 3-point line - in Tuesday's 98-97 loss to Memphis.

The performance came on the heels of four straight 30-point games for the two-time All-Star, and it contributed to the Blazers' first loss of the homestand. "We had some turnovers and some possessions on defense where we allowed them to take advantage of us," Lillard told the media. "They just made more plays than we did in that fourth quarter. We had some fouls. Let that one slip. We had our chances." The Nets are 1-2 thus far on a five-game trip after falling 112-104 in Denver on Tuesday. Tyler Zeller scored a season-high 21 points off the bench as Brooklyn's starting five combined for just 40 points while shooting 38.5 percent.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), NBCSN Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE NETS (4-7): Small forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson sat out the loss in Denver due to a hip issue, joining a growing list of injured players for coach Kenny Atkinson, who has been forced to adjust his rotation on the fly. "It's a challenge for continuity, which is the big thing, especially with a new team, just getting your rhythm," Atkinson told reporters. "It's continuity in the lineups where you want the same guys playing together. We're mixing and matching right now." Zeller took advantage of his opportunity to steal some minutes with an 8-for-10 shooting effort, while guard Isaiah Whitehead saw his first action on the trip and responded with five points, four assists, four steals and two blocked shots in 15 minutes.

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (6-5): CJ McCollum picked up the slack for Lillard with a season-high 36 points but missed an opportunity to hit a game-winner in the closing seconds as Portland fell to 4-3 at home. Backup Shabazz Napier saw some rare playing time and responded with 12 points - also a season high - to pace a solid effort by the bench. "Their second unit plays a small lineup, they spread the court and I just thought it was a chance for us to kind of match that," coach Terry Stotts told reporters of using Napier. "I thought we needed a little bit of a spark. I really like Shabazz. It's unfortunate he hasn't been able to get a lot of time so far and I thought it was a good opportunity to get him on the court."

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. Lillard has hit 44.6 percent of his 3-pointers in 10 career games against the Nets.

                        2. Hollis-Jefferson (hip) is hopeful to play Friday.

                        3. Portland swept the two-game series each of the last two seasons.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 114, Nets 103
