    Preview: Knicks at Raptors

    Gracenote
    Nov 16, 2017

The Toronto Raptors are soaring on the offensive end and will try to stay hot when they host the New York Knicks on Friday in the opener of a quick two-game homestand. The Raptors scored at least 119 points in each of their wins during a 4-1 stretch, with the lone loss a one-point setback against the dominant Boston Celtics on the road.

Toronto turned some heads by winning both ends of a road back-to-back at Houston and New Orleans while scoring an average of 127 points. "I think we're just playing together, understanding the game plan each and every night," guard Kyle Lowry told the media after the 125-116 victory over the Pelicans. "I think everyone is locked into what we're trying to do. We're a good team." The Knicks are making the same claim amid an 8-3 stretch, although seven of the wins have come at home and they lost each of their last seven games against Toronto. Tim Hardaway Jr.'s late 3-pointer lifted New York to a 106-101 win over Utah on Wednesday to cap a 2-1 homestand.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG (New York), Sportsnet ONE (Toronto)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (8-6): Hardaway scored four points on 2-of-11 shooting in the opener of the homestand before averaging 27 points, eight rebounds, 5.5 assists and making 7-of-17 3-pointers over the next two contests. The emerging star had 14 of his 26 points in Wednesday's win in the fourth quarter, including seven in the final 32 seconds as he thrived on the energy at Madison Square Garden. "It was awesome," Hardaway told reporters. "Those are the moments you live for; you live for and you dream of when you're a kid. Come into a grand stadium like this and making game-winners, making go-ahead baskets and playing defense and giving the fans what they want."

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (9-5): It is no wonder that Lowry's emergence from an early slump has keyed Toronto's offensive surge, as the veteran point guard is finding the rhythm that carried the squad many times last season. "Coaches are preaching when you've got open looks, take them and be aggressive in all the things that you do," he told the media. After missing all four of his shots and getting ejected in a loss to Washington on Nov. 5, the 31-year-old was shooting 37.6 percent from the floor, but he's at 48.3 percent while averaging 19 points in five games since.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Raptors SG DeMar DeRozan averaged 32 points in four wins against the Knicks last season.

    2. New York PF Kristaps Porzingis is averaging 21 points - nearly eight below his season average - over the last two games and shot below 50 percent from the field in consecutive outings for the first time this season.

    3. Toronto SF C.J. Miles hit a combined 11-of-18 3-pointers in the wins over Houston and New Orleans.

    PREDICTION: Raptors 119, Knicks 111

        Preview: Hornets at Bulls

        Gracenote
        Nov 16, 2017

The Charlotte Hornets fell apart in the second half of a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday and suffered their fifth consecutive loss. The Hornets won’t face a team with quite as much offensive firepower as the Cavaliers on Friday, when they visit the lowly Chicago Bulls.

Charlotte was swept on a four-game road trip but looked refreshed early while scoring 67 first-half points at home against the Cavaliers before slumping to 40 after the break and dropping a 115-107 decision. The Hornets are making a brief trip before coming home for three straight games beginning on Saturday against the Los Angeles Clippers and are looking to turn things around against the Bulls, who are riding their own five-game slide and are tied for the fewest wins in the NBA. Chicago trailed by at least 20 points at the end of the first quarter in each of its last two games and could not find much offense in Monday's 92-79 setback at Oklahoma City. "At the start of the game we haven't been able to get it going," Bulls rookie forward Lauri Markkanen told reporters. "We have to come out and play hard. ... If we are competing at the level that we have been practicing, then we are going to win a lot of basketball games. But we have to give ourselves a chance and come out the gates playing hard. When the game starts we have to be ready to play."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), WGN (Chicago)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (5-8): Wednesday's loss did contain two positives for Charlotte with the return of shooting guard Nicolas Batum and a strong performance from forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Batum sat out the first 12 games recovering from an elbow injury and went 7-of-15 from the floor en route to 16 points in 32 minutes while adding six assists and five rebounds on Wednesday. Kidd-Gilchrist scored a season-high 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting - 12 points better than his previous season high.

ABOUT THE BULLS (2-10): Chicago committed to a rebuild by trading away Jimmy Butler and buying out Dwyane Wade over the summer, and the inconsistency of the young roster is on display nightly. Kris Dunn, a second-year player acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the deal that sent Butler away, made his first start on Wednesday and struggled, scoring three points on 1-of-11 shooting in 29 minutes. "I think the whole season is going to be part of the learning process for us," Dunn told the team's website. "We are young and we need to learn how to grow, improve, take it to another game and try to learn from it."

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. Charlotte SG Treveon Graham (quad) sat out the last two games and is day-to-day.

        2. Chicago SG Justin Holiday left the team to be with his wife for the birth of their child and is questionable to return on Friday.

        3. The Bulls took two of the three meetings last season, including a 118-111 win in the lone matchup in Chicago.

        PREDICTION: Hornets 110, Bulls 96

            Preview: Thunder at Spurs

            Gracenote
            Nov 16, 2017

A favorable portion of the schedule allowed the Oklahoma City Thunder to get back to .500, but the level of difficulty is about to go up. The Thunder commence the challenging stretch Friday night when they put a three-game winning streak on the line with a visit to the San Antonio Spurs.

After leaving the AT&T Center, Oklahoma City will visit a dangerous New Orleans team before hosting Golden State and Detroit to finish up a span against four opponents who entered Thursday a combined 18 games over .500. The stretch comes on the heels of victories over three losing squads - all at home - including a 92-79 win over Chicago on Wednesday. The Spurs won five of six before falling flat in a 98-86 loss at Minnesota, as leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge was held to 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting in the team's worst offensive effort of the season. "Guys competed and tried to give ourselves a chance, but I thought we had some key breakdowns at bad times," Aldridge told reporters.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Oklahoma, FS Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (7-7): Carmelo Anthony (back) returned from a one-game layoff to notch his first double-double with Oklahoma City, but he struggled from the floor along with fellow stars Paul George and Russell Westbrook. The trio shot 13-for-38 against the Bulls, which left them taking pride in a defensive effort that held Chicago to seven first-quarter points and a 34.7 percent mark from the field for the game. "[It was] the commitment to making multiple efforts on the defensive end, scrambling, being disciplined, doing what we work on and practice on a consistent basis," Anthony told reporters.

ABOUT THE SPURS (9-6): Foul trouble limited Aldridge to 28 minutes in the loss to Minnesota, his second-lowest total of the season, and it was tough to find reliable offensive options for a team still waiting for Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker to make their season debuts. "He has been the main actor of our offense and playing without him is hard," guard Manu Ginobili told the San Antonio Express-News. "We got used to relying on him to score and create. So when he got into foul trouble we ran out of resources. It's just harder when he's not on the court." Ginobili shot 1-of-6 as he and six other reserves combined for just 26 points.

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. The Thunder entered Thursday ranked second in the NBA in scoring defense (97.1 points), while the Spurs were tied for third (98.9).

            2. Oklahoma City C Steven Adams (calf) missed three games in a row and is questionable for this one.

            3. San Antonio won two of three meetings last season and claimed four in a row at home.

            PREDICTION: Spurs 101, Thunder 96

                Preview: Timberwolves at Mavericks

                Gracenote
                Nov 16, 2017

The Minnesota Timberwolves are finally beginning to play some defense, which raises their ceiling considerably. The Timberwolves will try to hold a third straight opponent under 100 points when they visit the NBA-worst Dallas Mavericks on Friday.

Minnesota was allowing opponents to shoot better than 50 percent from the field through the first four weeks of the season and is still last in the NBA in field-goal percentage defense (49.3), but at least it is moving in the right direction. The Timberwolves held opponents under 100 points in each of their last five wins and put together one of their best defensive performances on Wednesday, when they held the San Antonio Spurs to 41.8 percent shooting in a 98-86 triumph. The Mavericks aren't much better on the defensive end and pair that with an offense ranked 29th in the NBA while shooting 42.3 percent. "There has to be balance," Dallas forward Harrison Barnes told the team's website of the offense. "I think we have guys on this team who can create off the dribble, who are good at that. But at the same time, I understand what (coach Rick Carlisle is) saying, just in terms of moving, making sure everyone's touching it, getting a flow to the offense. I think there's a balance to be had with both. Right now, in trying to get out of this rut, I think we're trying to figure that out."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (9-5): Minnesota is asking a lot of center Karl-Anthony Towns, and he is delivering. The Kentucky product, who turned 22 on Wednesday, recorded his fourth straight double-double with 26 points and 16 rebounds while playing 40 minutes against the Spurs -- the third straight game in which he logged at least 39 minutes. Towns' performance on Wednesday helped the Timberwolves overcome a rough night from swingman Jimmy Butler, who went 2-of-13 from the floor.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (2-13): Dallas began its four-game homestand with a 97-91 loss to the Spurs on Tuesday -- its third straight setback -- but is starting to see improvement, at least in effort. "We've just got to keep bringing the same kind of fight we brought (Tuesday) and we've brought really the last three games," Carlisle told reporters. "I think the last four games our level of fight is really good. We've got to get some more shots in, and we've got to get off the dribble a little bit. We're dribbling too much at times, and we've got to fight it out on the boards and do a good job with turnovers." Rookie Dennis Smith Jr. scored a season-high 27 points in the loss to San Antonio and is averaging 21.3 points over his last four games.

                BUZZER BEATERS

                1. Mavericks SG Wesley Matthews is 7-of-33 from the floor over the last three games, including 3-of-19 from 3-point range.

                2. Timberwolves C Gorgui Dieng (finger) sat out the last three games and is day-to-day.

                3. Minnesota beat Dallas 112-99 at home on Nov. 4 behind 31 points and 12 rebounds from Towns.

                PREDICTION: Timberwolves 106, Mavericks 92

                    Preview: Trail Blazers at Kings

                    Gracenote
                    Nov 16, 2017

The Portland Trail Blazers look to take advantage of a struggling team when they visit the Sacramento Kings on Friday night for the opener of a home-and-home, two-day set. The Trail Blazers have won four of their last six contests after outlasting Orlando 99-94 on Wednesday and holding an opponent under 95 points for the second straight game.

Portland was tied for third in scoring defense (98.9) entering Thursday and holds opponents to 43.6 percent shooting to go along with an offense led by All-Star guard Damian Lillard, who is averaging 24.5 points after scoring 26 versus Orlando. The Trail Blazers hope to keep their focus against the Kings, who have dropped three in a row since their only winning streak of the season (two) and are second-to-last in the league in scoring (93.6). Sacramento won its last two at home - Oklahoma City and Philadelphia - but regressed on the recent road trip that ended with a 126-80 loss at Atlanta on Wednesday that caused coach Dave Joerger to tell reporters: “Losing’s one thing, but we’ve got to do a better job of competing.” Kings rookie guard De’Aaron Fox has struggled shooting of late, making 10-of-34 from the field over the past four contests, but had just five total turnovers in that stretch.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBCSN Northwest (Portland), NBCSN California (Sacramento)

ABOUT PORTLAND (8-6): Reserve guard Shabazz Napier has picked up his production of late while scoring in double figures three of the last four games, culminating with 19 points that included a 5-for-5 effort from behind the arc Wednesday. Lillard’s backcourt mate, CJ McCollum, also poured in 24 points in the win over Orlando and has shot at least 50 percent from the field in three of his last four outings. Center Jusuf Nurkic matched his season high with five assists last time out and is averaging 15.4 points and 7.2 rebounds overall.

ABOUT SACRAMENTO (3-11): Leading scorer Zach Randolph (13 points) scored 16 against Atlanta while veteran guard George Hill was the only other player who reached double figures with a dozen. Rookie guard Justin Jackson has cooled off after putting together back-to-back double-figure scoring performances, going just 7-of-31 from the floor over the past three contests. Guard Buddy Hield is averaging 13.4 points in November, but is coming off his worst game of the month as he was held to six points on 2-of-8 from the field.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Sacramento PF Skal Labissiere has drained 12-of-22 shots from the field in the last three contests.

                    2. Portland’s rookie PF Caleb Swanigan made his second career start Wednesday, but did not score in six minutes.

                    3. The Trail Blazers won two of the three meetings last season with each team winning on its home court.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 110, Kings 103

                        Preview: Rangers at Blue Jackets

                        Gracenote
                        Nov 16, 2017

The New York Rangers saw their six-game winning streak end with a thud Wednesday in Chicago, but they will try to earn a split of the two-game road trip when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night. The teams have already met twice, with the Blue Jackets posting a 3-1 win in Columbus on Oct. 13 and New York winning 5-3 at home on Nov. 6.

Artemi Panarin scored in each of the first two meetings against the Rangers, but scoring has been an issue for the Blue Jackets with a combined five goals in the past four games. “It’s not one guy. It’s four or five guys that are struggling offensively,” coach John Tortorella said. “We’ve just got to keep on trying to work out of it and get something good to happen for us.” New York has played the second-fewest road games in the Eastern Conference, falling to 2-4-0 away from home after allowing five third-period goals in a 6-3 setback to the Blackhawks. “We got what we deserved,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. “We didn’t deserve to win and we didn’t.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, TVAS, MSG-Plus (New York), FSN Ohio

ABOUT THE RANGERS (9-8-2): Defenseman Brendan Smith, acquired at the trade deadline last season and signed to a four-year, $17.4 million contract in June, will finally return to the lineup Friday after being a healthy scratch for six straight games. “Brendan’s handled this as a pro, stayed focused, worked hard," Vigneault said. "He wasn’t happy, there’s no doubt.” Henrik Lundqvist, who won all six games during the winning streak before he was yanked in Wednesday's loss, will make his eighth consecutive start.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (11-7-1): Columbus halted a four-game skid with back-to-back 2-1 victories -- both beyond regulation -- on the back of Sergei Bobrovsky, who made a spectacular highlight-reel save in each contest. “Right now, the Columbus Blue Jackets own the best save of the year in the highlights, and the second best save of the year,” Tortorella said of the reigning Vezina Trophy winner. Forward Lukas Sedlak, expected to be out six weeks, practiced Thursday 3 1/2 weeks after injuring his ankle.

                        OVERTIME

                            Preview: Sabres at Red Wings

Forward Anthony Mantha has put the pieces together to make a profound impact with the Detroit Red Wings, so much so that goaltender Jimmy Howard told reporters that he thinks the 23-year-old can be a "superstar in this league." Mantha looks to keep the Red Wings churning in the right direction on Friday when they play the third contest of their five-game homestand against the Buffalo Sabres.

With two goals and an assist, Mantha increased his point total to 11 (six goals, five assists) in his last eight contests as Detroit improved to 5-2-1 in that stretch with an 8-2 romp over Calgary on Wednesday. "I just think it's part of the maturation of him as a player," coach Jeff Blashill told MLive of the 6-foot-5, 214-pound Mantha. "As you mature as a player, he gets more ice time. As you get more ice time, you get a chance to produce more when you're talented like he is." Mantha and his mates were blanked in their last encounter with Buffalo, but the Sabres are hardly singing in the streets after losing three in a row and six of eight overall as well as three straight on the road. Benoit Pouliot scored in Buffalo's 5-4 overtime setback to Pittsburgh on Tuesday and also netted the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Detroit on Oct. 24.

                            TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG-B (Buffalo), SN360, FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE SABRES (5-9-4): Evander Kane is enjoying the best start to a season in his career with team-leading totals in goals (10) and points (18) in 18 contests. The 26-year-old extended his point streak to four games (three goals, two assists) in the first period following a feed from Jack Eichel, who picked up his team-leading 11th assist on that exchange before snapping an eight-game goal drought in the second. The 21-year-old looks to build on that momentum versus Detroit, against which he has four goals and seven points in nine career meetings.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (9-8-2): Defenseman Luke Witkowski was suspended 10 games by the NHL for his role in Wednesday's melee versus the Flames. After being escorted off the ice following a fight with Brett Kulak, the 27-year-old Michigan native attempted to rejoin the fracas and was assessed a fighting major, two 10-minute misconducts and a game misconduct. Witkowski brazenly boasted following the match that he deemed his actions to be "old-time hockey" and said "I think it's good for the game," although the league readily disagreed with that assessment the following day.

                            OVERTIME

                            1. Detroit C Dylan Larkin matched Mantha with a three-point performance on Wednesday and has nine points (two goals, seven assists) in his past eight games.

                            2. Sabres G Robin Lehner, who made 32 saves in last month's encounter, turned aside 97 of 102 shots to post a 2-0-1 mark versus the Red Wings last season.

                            3. Howard sustained the hard-luck loss in the teams' previous meeting, but owns an 8-1-1 mark versus Buffalo and has yet to yield more than two goals in regulation against the club in his career.

PREDICTION: Red Wings 3, Sabres 2
