          Preview: Pelicans at Nuggets
          Gracenote
          Nov 16, 2017

Two teams coming off disappointing efforts try to get back to what they were doing when the New Orleans Pelicans visit the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. Both improving squads were rolling along with five wins in six contests before New Orleans struggled to defend in a 125-116 loss to Toronto on Wednesday and the Nuggets could not score in Monday’s 99-82 setback against Portland.

The Pelicans ranked 23rd in the league in scoring defense entering Thursday, but were much worse Wednesday as the Raptors drained 59.2 percent from the field and 16-of-34 from 3-point range. “The rotations were bad, communication was pretty bad,” New Orleans leading scorer DeMarcus Cousins told reporters after the loss. “We let guys that are known shooters get wide open shots. That’s on us. We were a bit limited.” Denver scored 11 points fewer than their previous low this season Monday while shooting just 35.7 percent from the field after averaging 113 in their previous three contests - 22.7 from 6-10 center Nikola Jokic, who was named Western Conference Player of the Week. “We were in a very good offensive rhythm coming in here,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone told reporters. “And they took us out of our rhythm right away.”

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT PELICANS (8-7): Point guard Rajon Rondo made his first start of the season Wednesday in his second appearance since returning from core muscle surgery in the preseason, contributing four points and eight assists in 14 minutes. “I’m just taking my time and trying to do the right thing,” Rondo told the Times-Picayune. “I haven’t had any practices and these games are like practices. I’m just trying to make sure I manage it correctly. It’s a marathon not a sprint.” Cousins is averaging 28 points and 13.7 rebounds while Anthony Davis is chipping in 25.6 and 11.4, respectively, for New Orleans.

ABOUT NUGGETS (8-6): Jokic leads six players averaging in double figures in scoring (16.4), but must rebound from a rough shooting night against Portland when he was 2-for-9 from the floor with six points. Paul Millsap (15.7 points) has picked up his production by scoring 17 per game over the last four and Jamal Murray scored 50 points combined in the past two contests. Malone told reporters he expects to have Gary Harris, who is scoring 12.4 per game and shooting 44.1 percent from 3-point range, back in the lineup Friday after he missed the previous two contests with a shoulder injury.

          BUZZER BEATERS

          1. Denver SF Wilson Chandler averaged 13.5 points the last two games - five better than his season mark.

          2. New Orleans G/F Tony Allen is questionable after missing the last three games with knee soreness.

          3. The Nuggets won three of the four meetings last season, splitting a pair in Denver.

          PREDICTION: Pelicans 111, Nuggets 103

              Preview: Suns at Lakers
              Gracenote
              Nov 17, 2017

Lonzo Ball's highest-scoring output of his 15 NBA games came against the Phoenix Suns and that might be why he will still be in the starting lineup Friday. Ball is averaging 4.5 points on 4-of-19 shooting over the past two games but Los Angeles Lakers coach Luke Walton said he isn't moving the No. 2 overall pick to the bench for the home tilt against Phoenix.

Ball scored a season-high 29 points (he also had 11 rebounds and nine assists) against the Suns on Oct. 20 but struggled in the rematch Monday when he tallied only seven on 2-of-10 shooting. Then came an even poorer effort against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday when Ball scored two points on 1-of-9 shooting and didn't play in the fourth quarter for the second straight game. "He's our starting point guard," Walton insisted after Thursday's practice. "So there's no discussion, no talks as of now of moving Lonzo to the bench. Nah. He's our starting point guard." Phoenix has dropped seven of its last eight games and its defense was non-existent while giving up 90 first-half points in Thursday's 142-116 loss to the Houston Rockets.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona (Phoenix), Spectrum Sports Net (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE SUNS (5-11): Center Greg Monroe started against the Rockets in his Phoenix debut and had season highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes, and he is also expected to start the Lakers. Monroe, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks in the recent deal for guard Eric Bledsoe, was inserted into the lineup because starter Tyson Chandler is away from the team because of a respiratory illness. Standout shooting guard Devin Booker registered a season-best 10 assists against Houston but scored only 18 points after scoring 35 or more in each of the previous two games.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (6-9): While Ball continues to struggle, second-year forward Brandon Ingram (26 points) and rookie forward Kyle Kuzma (24) each recorded career-best point totals during the loss to the 76ers. Ingram, the second overall pick in 2016, is averaging 14.7 points while Kuzma is faring even better at 15.5 and said the scrutiny Ball is under is more than a tad unfair. "I know he wants to play better and wants to be that guy," Kuzma told reporters. "I think he is going to be all right. The media and everybody in the country wants him to be a Hall of Famer, wants him to be an All-Star right now, but he is still a rookie. It is tough to play at this level for anybody. There are 10-year vets that play way worse than he does and nobody talks about them."

              BUZZER BEATERS

              1. The Lakers are 2-0 against the Suns this season after losing 16 of the previous 22 meetings.

              2. Phoenix backup SG Troy Daniels matched a franchise record with six 3-pointers in a quarter (the second) versus the Rockets and finished with season bests of 23 points and seven 3-pointers.

              3. Los Angeles reserve PG Jordan Clarkson has scored 20 or more points in each of the past two games and is averaging a team-leading 15.8 points.

              PREDICTION: Lakers 125, Suns 119

UNLV vs. New Mexico Over 56

These two defenses are such a struggle, making this Over worth a move here on Friday.
UNLV is giving up 32.3 points per game as this defense simply cannot stop ranks 116th in the NCAA in total yards against.
On the other side of things, New Mexico is just as bad. They are giving up 30.9 points against and are 96th against the pass.
These two have started to open the playbook some too over the pass couple games. With both having poor seasons, things are starting to get more loose as the season winds down. That bodes well for this Over as they should take plenty of chances deep down field for us.
Some trends to note. Over is 6-1 in Rebels last 7 Friday games. Over is 7-1 in Lobos last 8 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
This number is too low given how bad these defenses are.
                    Back Over.
                    Good Luck, Razor Ray.

                      Northeastern vs. Stanford
                      Northeastern+8.5

The Huskies have an early afternoon game against Stanford on Friday. Northeastern is getting some balanced scoring from five different players who average nine points or more. They are taking on a Cardinal team that lost to Eastern Washington last time out and are dealing with injury issues. Senior Guard Dorian Pickens and sophomore forward Kodye Pugh are out with Marcus Sheffield dealing with ailments. Stanford has North Carolina on deck so focus could be an issue although they are coming off a loss. They have covered just nine of their last 25 as a favorite. I think the road team is a live dog in this one.

                          Pelicans vs. Nuggets
                          Nuggets-4½

The Nuggets’ stinker at Portland on Monday night notwithstanding, there are a lot of positive signs for Denver heading into this game. The Nuggets are rested, they’ve had time to work out issues that cropped up Monday and they hope to be a deeper team with the expected return of Gary Harris to the starting lineup. Harris enables Will Barton to return to the bench and add depth. And with Jokic and Millsap, Denver also has the size to deal with New Orleans’ Davis/Cousins two-headed monster in the paint. Toss in that Denver has been tough at home of late (5-1 at the Pepsi Center in November, including wins over Toronto and Oklahoma City) and the building blocks are in place for a cover tonight.

Heat are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a winning home record & Underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between Heat and Wizards.

                              Wizards -5

Nets (+) over Jazz- Utah started the season 5-3 but are just 1-6 since with the lone win in that span coming against the Nets 114-106 in Utah. Now, Utah is traveling to Brooklyn where the improved Nets are 3-3 at home while the Jazz are 0-5 on the road. But, Utah has won three straight meetings in Brooklyn. Reversal here...Take BROOKLYN!
