The annual border battle between Colorado and Utah will feature some added spice this Saturday night. Both teams enter the regular-season finale with 5-6 overall records and will be fighting for bowl eligibility when they clash in Salt Lake City.

The Utes are hoping to extend their postseason streak to four straight seasons while the Buffaloes are aiming to procure the program’s first back-to-back bowl berths since 2005. Saturday’s loser will not only miss out on the postseason but will finish last in the Pac-12 South Division as both teams enter the contest with identical 2-6 conference records as well. A year ago, Colorado won the South with an 8-1 mark while Utah finished third at 5-4. “There’s a lot at stake for them and for us,” Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre told the school’s website earlier this week. “CU hasn’t been to back-to-back bowl games in 12 years, and our kids know that. … Utah goes to a bowl game every year so they want to keep their tradition going. It’s a big deal for both teams.”

ABOUT COLORADO (5-6, 2-6 Pac-12): The Buffaloes have dropped three of their last four but had a bye week last weekend to get in some extra preparation. Quarterback Steven Montez has topped 300 yards passing in each of the last three games and has a trio of 500-yard receivers to throw to in Bryce Bobo (640), Shay Fields (623) and Devin Ross (508), but Colorado’s most potent weapon has been senior running back Phillip Lindsay, who ranks second in the conference in yards from scrimmage (149.6 per game) and is tied for fourth with 14 total touchdowns. Linebackers Rick Gamboa and Drew Lewis are averaging a combined 19.6 tackles per game for a defense which has been gashed for an average of 34.6 points and 495.4 yards in Pac-12 play.

ABOUT UTAH (5-6, 2-6): Coach Kyle Whittingham’s Utes will be trying to shake off last Saturday night’s stunning 33-30 loss at Washington in which the Huskies rallied for 10 points in the final 58 seconds. Quarterback Tyler Huntley rolled up 341 total yards and accounted for a trio of touchdowns in the game and ranks second in the Pac-12 with an average of 302.9 yards of total offense while wide receiver Darren Carrington II has battled through aches and pains of late and ranks third in the conference with 85.4 receiving yards per outing. The Utah defense was without starting defensive end Kylie Fitts and safety Chase Hansen against the Huskies but ranks third in the Pac-12 in yards allowed (357.0) and fourth in points surrendered (24.9).


EXTRA POINTS

1. Utah has won four of the six meetings since both schools joined the Pac-12 in 2011, but Colorado prevailed 27-22 at home in last season’s regular-season finale to wrap up the South Division title.

2. Each of the six Pac-12 meetings between the schools have been one-score affairs with an average margin of victory of 5.3 points.

NCAAF opening line report: Alabama opens as 4.5-point favorites for Iron Bowl

"Alabama has owned this rivalry recently, winning the game outright by double digits in five of the last six years."

Week 12 of the college football season featured a bunch of huge pointspreads and very limited good matchups. On the flip side, 13 is a lucky number, with a lot of big games on the docket this week, including a major SEC showdown. Patrick Everson checks in on the opening lines and early action with Dave Mason, brand manager for offshore sportsbook BetOnline.ag.

No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 6 Auburn Tigers (+4.5)

Alabama heads into the annual Iron Bowl carrying the only unblemished record among the contenders for the four-team College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide (11-0 SU, 5-6 ATS) had what amounted to a bye in Week 12, taking FCS outfit Mercer to the woodshed in a 56-0 victory to cash as a massive 49.5-point home favorite.

Auburn has two losses, but also holds an impressive win over then-unbeaten Georgia in Week 11 and therefore still harbors some CFP hopes. The Tigers (9-2 SU, 5-4-2 ATS) also had a gimme game in Week 12, dumping Louisiana-Monroe 42-14 as a 38-point home chalk.

“There is little doubt that Saturday's Iron Bowl will be the biggest-bet college football game on Thanksgiving weekend,” Mason said. “Alabama has owned this rivalry recently, winning the game outright by double digits in five of the last six years. Despite ‘Bama’s recent dominance, Auburn is taking on the most bets out of any college team so far. Just 29 percent of early bettors are on the Tide.”

No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan Wolverines (+11)

Ohio State leads the Big Ten East Division and needs to wrap up a spot in the conference championship game to remain among the CFP prospects. The Buckeyes (9-2 SU, 5-6 ATS) thumped Illinois 52-14 laying 41 points at home Saturday.

Michigan is hoping to play spoiler against the Buckeyes in The Game, one of college football’s most-storied rivalries. The Wolverines (8-3 SU, 4-6-1 ATS) hung around through three quarters at Wisconsin, but ultimately fell short 24-10 as a 6.5-point underdog in Week 12.

“Speaking of one-sided rivalries, Ohio State has a five-game winning streak over Michigan,” Mason said. “The Game will most likely be the second-most-bet game on Saturday, after the Iron Bowl. The house will be huge Wolverine fans, as 85 percent of early bettors are on the Buckeyes.”

That helped tick the line up to 11.5 Sunday evening.

No. 15 Washington State Cougars at No. 14 Washington Huskies (-9.5)

Washington State controls its fate in the Pac-12 North Division, heading into the Apple Cup showdown Saturday night. The Cougars (9-2 SU, 7-4 ATS) enter this instate clash off a bye week, after fending off Utah 33-25 as a 1-point road fave on Week 11.

Washington can’t win the division and therefore can’t make it to the Pac-12 title game, but would love to wreck its rival. The Huskies (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) got all they could handle from Utah on Saturday, pulling out a 33-30 victory on a last-minute field goal.

“While the Iron Bowl is getting the most early action, (this game) is getting the most lopsided early action,” Mason said. “It's looking like we will be rooting for the Huskies, considering 90 percent of early bettors are taking the Cougars and the points.”

South Florida at Central Florida (-10.5)

Central Florida remains undefeated, but has no shot at the CFP and will instead hope to stay on course for the American Athletic Conference title and a spot in a bigger-name bowl game. The Knights (10-0 SU, 6-3-1 ATS) coasted past Temple 45-19 giving 13.5 points on Saturday.

South Florida (9-1 SU, 4-6 ATS) could get to the conference title game with a victory over UCF. The Bulls topped Tulsa 27-20 in Week 12, falling way short as 24-point chalk.

“Despite their impressive SU records, neither team has been generous to their loyal bettors recently,” Mason said. “South Florida failed to cover the number in each of its last four games. Meanwhile, after starting the season on a torrid covering rate, Central Florida is just 1-3 ATS in its last four. Not a ton of early action yet, but 60 percent of early bettors are on Central Florida.”

The Knights were up to -11.5 Sunday evening.

Georgia Bulldogs at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (+11, 52)

Georgia's red-zone rampage vs. Georgia Tech's downfield D problems

Georgia remains on the periphery of the College Football Playoff, but will likely need a little help to get there. The Bulldogs can help their own cause this weekend as they visit rival Georgia Tech in their final regular-season game. Georgia has played mostly flawless football this season, but a one-sided loss to Auburn on Nov. 11 might just torpedo their chances at a national title. That said, they should have little trouble this Saturday - particularly when they reach the Yellow Jackets' 20-yard line.

The Georgia defense has earned most of the platitudes this season - and with good reason, as the Bulldogs have limited opponents to a minuscule 14.4 points per game. But the offense has been impressive in its own right, averaging better than 35 points per contest while producing points on a whopping 97.6 percent of trips inside the opponent's red zone (40-for-41) - tied with Arizona State for the best success rate in the nation. And 30 of those visits have resulted in touchdowns.

To that end, Saturday's matchup couldn't be any sweeter for the visiting Bulldogs. Georgia Tech's quest to finish above .500 - both in conference and overall play - hinges on the ability to keep Georgia off the scoresheet. And that might be too tall a task given that the Yellow Jackets rank dead last in Division I when it come to red zone defense, allowing foes to score on 97 percent of their trips inside the Georgia Tech 20. Look for Georgia to make the hosts pay when the get deep into Yellow Jackets territory.

Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan Wolverines (+11.5, 50.5)

Ohio State's third-down stinginess vs. Michigan's drive-extension struggles

One of college football's most storied rivalries will see its next chapter play out this Saturday at the Big House, when the Wolverines wrap up a disappointing regular season against the hated Buckeyes. Ohio State has already secured a spot in the Big Ten title game, but a big win over Michigan this weekend - followed by a victory over Wisconsin next week - could put the Buckeyes in the CFP conversation. Working in its favor Saturday: Ohio State has a significant edge when it comes to third-down play.

The Ohio State offense, led by quarterback J.T. Barrett, was a thing to behold this season, as it enters this week's showdown with the Wolverines ranked third in the nation in scoring offense at 44.9 points per game. But the defense is nothing to scoff at, either: the Buckeyes have limited opposing teams to a 30.1-percent success rate on third downs, ranking 14th among FBS schools. Limiting foes to shorter drives was certainly a catalyst in Ohio State's powerhouse offense overwhelming the competition.

Michigan can only wonder what could have been. Despite having one of the top defenses in Division I, the Wolverines are well out of the College Football Playoff picture thanks in a large part to offensive struggles that persisted for most of the season. Among them: an inability to convert on third down; Michigan comes into the weekend ranked 112th in the country in scoring or extending drives on third down, doing so just 32.7 percent of the time. Expect that number to dip even further against the relentless Buckeyes.

Alabama Crimson Tide at Auburn Tigers (+4.5, 47.5)

A spot in the College Football Playoff is most certainly at stake this weekend at Jordan–Hare Stadium, when the Auburn Tigers host the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Auburn has two narrow losses on its ledger but has reeled off four consecutive one-sided victories, and will almost certainly find itself in the CFP if it can prevail in the Iron Bowl. The Crimson Tide come in as a slight favorite, and their passing game has a sizeable advantage over Auburn's underwhelming secondary.

The list of things Nick Saban's team has done well this season is far too lengthy to mention here - but we'll be focusing on an ultra-careful pass attack that has produced 22 touchdowns through the air with just two interceptions on 253 total attempts, tied with San Diego State for the fewest INTs in the nation. Starting QB Jalen Hurts through his only interception of the season Oct. 14 against Arkansas, while freshman backup Tua Tagovailoa's only INT came the following week vs. Tennessee.

Alabama should have little trouble navigating its way through a Tigers pass defense that limited foes to a completion rate below 53 precent, but couldn't turn many errant throws into a change of possession. Auburn has picked off just six of its 348 pass attempts against, more than just 14 Division I teams; while two of those INTs were turned into touchdowns, that interception rate - coupled with Alabama's pinpoint passing - could mean trouble for the home side in a game that will decide the SEC West title.

Washington State Cougars at Washington Huskies (-9, 48.5)

Washington State's abysmal run game vs. Washington's vaunted ground defense

This year's Apple Cup between Washington State and Washington could provide double the satisfaction for the visiting Cougars, who can lock up the Pac-12 North title - and a spot in the conference championship game - with a victory. But it'll be tough sledding for Washington State, which did itself no favors with losses at Cal and Arizona last month; the Huskies are favored by nearly double digits in this one, thanks in large part to an enormous edge in the run game.

How the Cougars got this far without a competent ground attack is anyone's guess (they do rank third in the nation in passing yards per game, which helps.) Washington State averages just over 80 rushing yards per game, the second-lowest total in all of Division I, while their seven rushing scores also rank second from the bottom. The Cougars' longest run of the season is a modest 35 yards, and no single player has accumulated more than 91 rushing yards in a game in 2017.

Don't look for this weekend's encounter to be a get-right contest for the Washington State run game. Washington boasts one of the most formidable run defenses in the nation, allowing the fourth-fewest rushing yards per game (102.9) while limiting opponents to just seven scores on the ground. Washington State passes the ball on 70 percent of its plays, so Washington's pass defense will be tested - but if the Cougars can't make any inroads the other 30 percent of the time, their Apple Cup title hopes are in trouble.

Iron Bowl betting preview and odds: Alabama at Auburn

The Auburn Tigers haven't beaten Alabama since the miracle ending to the Iron Bowl in 2013. Will quarterback Jarrett Stidham be the difference in this year's SEC rivalry matchup?

Alabama Crimson Tide at Auburn Tigers (+4.5, 47)

The SEC West title is at stake on Saturday when top-ranked Alabama visits sixth-ranked Auburn in the Iron Bowl and the contest also carries College Football Playoff implications. The Tigers fall out of CFP consideration with a loss while the Crimson Tide would all but clinch a spot in the four-team playoff with their 12th consecutive victory.

Alabama coach Nick Saban said there is no need to explain the importance of Saturday's matchup to his players, especially with so much on the line in the latest installment.

"The Iron Bowl is a tremendous rivalry game and there's a lot of passion on both sides," Saban said at a press conference. "Lots of people are interested in it and it's got lots of ramifications this year. As a competitor, this is always a game you look forward to having the opportunity to play in."

Auburn has averaged 44 points while recording four consecutive victories after it looked like it was falling out of contention and coach Gus Malzahn is glad his team has this opportunity.

"This is a huge game for us. I'm excited for our team, and they've worked extremely hard to get to this point," Malzahn told reporters. "We're playing the No. 1 team in the country two times (the Tigers routed Georgia on Nov. 11) in the last three weeks. It's for the SEC West championship, so, real excited to play this week."

Sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts has thrown 14 touchdown passes against one interception and has accounted for 22 total touchdowns while leading an offense that ranks seventh nationally at 41.4 points per game. Junior wideout Calvin Ridley has 52 receptions for 858 yards and he ranks third in school history with 2,672 receiving yards.

ABOUT AUBURN (9-2 SU, 5-4-2 ATS, 7-4 O/U): Junior running back Kerryon Johnson has been superb with 1,172 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns but the Tigers will need a strong performance from sophomore quarterback Jarrett Stidham (2,445 yards, 16 touchdowns, four interceptions) against Alabama's stingy defense.

"I think it's going to be a big key for us, if we want to move the ball on these guys," Stidham said of having a balanced attack. "Obviously, they're a very, very talented defense. I think if we come and execute, establish a really good tempo, I think it will put us in a good position for the rest of the game."

Auburn is tied for eighth nationally in scoring defense (16.6) and ranks 10th in total defense (302.3) while receiving solid campaigns from junior pass rusher Jeff Holland (team-best nine sacks) and junior middle linebacker Deshaun Davis (team-leading 58 tackles).

The Philadelphia 76ers will be without sensational rookie Ben Simmons for the first time this season when they continue a six-game homestand against the Orlando Magic on Saturday. Simmons is dealing with swelling in his left elbow and will be re-evaluated over the weekend, the team announced Friday, leaving a big hole to fill for one of the NBA's hottest teams.

The 21-year-old is averaging 18.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 2.1 steals and already owns nine double-doubles to go along with two triple-doubles for Philadelphia, which has won nine of 12 after a 101-81 win over Portland on Wednesday. The Sixers still have big man Joel Embiid, who is averaging 28.4 points and 12.4 boards during a 4-1 stretch and recorded double-doubles in both games he played against the Magic last season. Orlando could be an easy target as it continues a tailspin following a strong start, dropping its seventh in a row with a 118-103 setback at Boston on Friday. Opponents are averaging 115.1 points during the slide.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (8-11): Leading scorer Evan Fournier (18.4 points) was limited to seven points on 3-of-13 shooting and Aaron Gordon (17.6) was held to 11 on 2-of-10 against Boston. Center Nikola Vucevic finished with 12 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds to record his third consecutive double-double. Terrence Ross dipped from 22 points in Wednesday's loss at Minnesota to five at Boston, but the veteran is 18-for-28 from the floor over a four-game span.

ABOUT THE 76ERS (10-7): To go along with his gaudy numbers, Embiid is seemingly more comfortable in all phases of the game and is taking a particular amount of pride in his defense. "Not to be cocky, but I think I'm the best defensive player in the league right now," he told reporters Wednesday. "I just want to keep on growing. I'm still getting better. My blocks are a little bit down, but I'm a better rebounder this year. ... I'm doing a lot of things to help the team win, and the guys around me do a lot of things to help me, too. I just want to keep on growing defensively and be the best defensive player in the league. Hopefully, this year I can win (NBA) Defensive Player of the Year." The Sixers have held consecutive opponents under 90 points for the first time since last December after limiting Portland to 33.7 percent shooting.

Preview: Spurs at Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets pushed the Cleveland Cavaliers to the brink before falling and now face one of the other top teams in the NBA when they host the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. Charlotte dropped a 100-99 decision in Cleveland on Friday as its three-game winning streak concluded.

San Antonio, which lost 107-90 to the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday, has won the past three meetings with the Hornets and that includes a 108-101 victory on Nov. 3 in which Charlotte guard Kemba Walker was limited to 13 points. "He has just steadily become a professional over the years and has taken his craft seriously because he wanted to be an all-around player and not just somebody who can shoot open 3s," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters about the high-scoring Walker. "He's gone to work every day with that thought." Walker tallied just 15 points on 6-of-21 shooting in Friday's setback as center Dwight Howard led the way with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The Spurs haven't played well on the road this season and bring a 3-5 mark into the contest.

ABOUT THE SPURS (11-7): Fourth-year pro Kyle Anderson has proven to be an asset this season while starting all 18 games in place of injured All-Star small forward Kawhi Leonard. Anderson is shooting 50 percent from the field while averaging 8.8 points and 6.2 rebounds and has scored in double figures in three straight games and five of his past seven. "We're not surprised at all," Popovich said of Anderson's strong performance. "He's just had a hard time getting minutes with Kawhi at that spot. He's always been a good basketball player. I just haven't given him the minutes that he's gotten this year. When Kawhi does come back, I've got some figuring out to do, because he should still be on the court somehow or other."

ABOUT THE HORNETS (8-10): Starting shooting guard Nicolas Batum (elbow) is questionable after sitting out Friday, which would mean another start for Jeremy Lamb despite his struggles against the Cavaliers. Lamb suffered through his worst shooting performance of the season against Cleveland as he scored just 11 points on 4-of-15 shooting and missed a potential game-winning 3-point shot in the final seconds. The 25-year-old has four 20-point outings this season, topped by a season-high 27 on 10-of-15 shooting in the loss to San Antonio earlier this month.
