            Preview: Penguins at Sabres

            Gracenote
            Dec 1, 2017

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been patient over the years with Tristan Jarry, a luxury that a team can afford with Marc-Andre Fleury and Matt Murray ahead of him on the depth chart. With Fleury now in Vegas and Murray considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury, the visiting Penguins likely will turn to Jarry on Friday for the opener of a home-and-home series against the Buffalo Sabres.

"We believe he is a solid goalie. I think the game he played against Tampa is a perfect example of what he's capable of," coach Mike Sullivan said of the 22-year-old Jarry, a second-round pick of the 2013 draft. "Tristan is going to have to make timely saves for us game in and game out. We believe he can do that." Belief may be in short supply in Western New York, as the Sabres have been shut out in back-to-back encounters, have lost nine of 10 overall and have seen their 30th-ranked power play go 0-for-18 in the last seven contests. "We have to have some attitude when we start the game," Buffalo coach Phil Housley said. "This is our home rink. We've got to get out and establish a forecheck, show more emotion on the ice."

            TV: 7 p.m. ET, AT&TSN-Pittsburgh, Sportsnet, TVAS, MSG-B (Buffalo)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (13-10-3): Captain Sidney Crosby has recorded back-to-back three-point performances, highlighted by recording his 11th career regular-season overtime goal in Monday's 5-4 win over Philadelphia to move into a tie with Mario Lemieux and Evgeni Malkin for the most in franchise history. The two-time Hart Trophy winner has 10 points in his last four games, including setting up a power-play goal in each of those contests. Phil Kessel also is riding a four-game point streak, with three goals and five assists in that stretch.

ABOUT THE SABRES (6-15-4): Zach Bogosian, who has been sidelined with a lower-body injury, is in line to make his season debut on Friday after participating in a full practice for the third time this week. "I've had a couple good days of practice," Bogosian said. "I feel ready. We'll see what tomorrow brings, but I'm sure I'll have a conversation with Coach sometime either today or tomorrow morning and go from there." Robin Lehner was absent from practice due to a maintenance day, but Housley expects the netminder back on the ice for Friday's game.

            OVERTIME

            1. Pittsburgh C Jake Guentzel has scored five times in his last four games to tie Kessel for the team lead in goals (11).

            2. Buffalo C Jack Eichel scored and set up a goal in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Penguins on Nov. 14 after notching just one assist in the previous five career encounters versus the club.

            3. Pittsburgh LW Conor Sheary, who scored twice in the previous meeting with Buffalo, has been held off the scoresheet in each of his last five games and nine of his last 12.

            PREDICTION: Penguins 5, Sabres 3

                Preview: Senators at Islanders

                Gracenote
                Dec 1, 2017

The New York Islanders are averaging the most goals per game in the NHL and that offense has been especially lethal at home, where the team has yet to lose in regulation. The surging Islanders have won four consecutive games and seven of their last eight as they prepare to host the ice-cold Ottawa Senators on Friday night.

New York improved to 8-0-2 at Barclays Center with Tuesday's 5-2 drubbing of Vancouver, marking the 11th time they have scored at least five goals and the seventh time in the 10 home games. "We're playing well offensively," Islanders coach Doug Weight said. "We have guys playing with a lot of confidence who are consistently figuring each other out." The opposite holds true for the Senators, who enter the second stop of a seven-game road trip mired in a seven-game losing streak, including a 2-1 setback to New York on Saturday night. Ottawa has not won since sweeping a pair of games from Colorado in Sweden on Nov. 10-11 and has scored a paltry nine goals during the 0-6-1 slide.

                TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN5, RDS (Ottawa), MSG-Plus (New York), NHL.TV

ABOUT THE SENATORS (8-9-6): Captain Erik Karlsson remains stuck on one goal and has not collected a point in seven games -- the defenseman's longest drought since an eight-game spell as a rookie. He caused a stir off the ice after Thursday's practice when he addressed his contract, which runs through the 2018-19 season. “When I go to market, I’m going to get what I’m worth, and it’s going to be no less, no matter where I’m going,” Karlsson said. "I think it’s time to realize that when we go to the table, it’s business on both parts, not just (owners).”

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (15-7-2): Jordan Eberle has notched all 10 of his goals over the past 14 games after scoring for the third straight game Tuesday, capping a three-goal first period for New York, which is 10-0-0 when netting the opening goal. "When you start like that it's tough for teams to come back," Eberle said. "We want to continue to start well and we've been good at home so far and we want to keep that going." Captain John Tavares has 10 points in the last eight games to tie Josh Bailey for the team scoring lead.

                OVERTIME

                1. Islanders C Mathew Barzal leads all rookies with 24 points and owns a seven-game point streak, the longest in the NHL.

                2. Ottawa's power play is in a 3-for-26 rut over the past seven games.

                3. Tavares needs one point to tie Pat LaFontaine (566) for sixth place on the franchise's all-time list.

                PREDICTION: Islanders 3, Senators 1

                    Preview: Hurricanes at Rangers

                    Gracenote
                    Nov 30, 2017

The New York Rangers saw their eight-game home winning streak come to a halt in their last outing, but coach Alain Vigneault's team has an even longer run under the belts heading into Friday's tilt versus the Carolina Hurricanes. The Rangers have won a staggering 13 straight versus the Hurricanes, including a 6-1 drubbing of coach Bill Peters' club on Nov. 22.

Mika Zibanejad collected a goal and an assist in that contest, but New York's leader in goals (11) and points (22) was a late scratch for Tuesday's game against Florida before Vigneault told reporters two days later that the 24-year-old Swede is out indefinitely with a concussion. David Desharnais fared well in his stead, notching three assists on a line with Chris Kreider and Pavel Buchnevich in the Rangers' 5-4 loss to the Panthers. The Hurricanes also fell on Tuesday, dropping their third contest in four outings with a 3-2 shootout at Columbus. Sebastian Aho, who was held off the scoresheet in that game as well as the two that preceded it, capped a five-game goal-scoring spree with Carolina's lone tally versus the New York.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Carolinas, MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (10-8-5): Scott Darling was gashed for all six goals in the first encounter versus New York - including Zibanejad's soft wrist shot from center ice that the 28-year-old netminder joked that he "lost it in the lights." The 28-year-old has rebounded in a big way, turning aside eight of nine shots in relief on Friday versus Toronto before stopping 68 of 73 shots in back-to-back shootouts versus Nashville and Columbus. Jeff Skinner leads the team with nine goals, but only two were scored in November.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (13-10-2): Kreider collected two goals and an assist versus the Panthers to increase his point total to eight (five goals, three assists) in his last seven games. Included in that stretch is a two-goal performance versus Carolina in the first encounter, giving the 26-year-old multi-point performances in each of the last three meetings with the Hurricanes. Impressive numbers to be certain, but Henrik Lundqvist may have him beat as the 2012 Vezina Trophy winner owns a scintillating 17-3-0 mark with a 1.77 goals-against average and .940 save percentage in his last 20 appearances against the Hurricanes.

                    OVERTIME

                    1. New York F Mats Zuccarello, who leads the team with 16 assists, has scored one goal and set up five others during his five-game point streak.

                    2. Carolina C Jordan Staal has one point in his last six games after erupting for six assists in his previous two.

                    3. The Rangers' winning streak versus the Hurricanes is their longest against one opponent in franchise history.

                    PREDICTION: Rangers 4, Hurricanes 2

                        Preview: Ducks at Blue Jackets

                        Dec 1, 2017

The Anaheim Ducks have responded well to their two worst losses this season, rebounding from each by knocking off a conference leader in their next game. Fresh off a 3-2 victory at Western Conference-best St. Louis, the Ducks will feature a new-look lineup when they continue a six-game road trip at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night.

The Ducks, who had lost four in a row prior to beating the Blues, made a move to bolster their injury ravaged lineup by shipping defenseman Sami Vatanen to New Jersey in exchange for centers Adam Henrique, Joseph Blandisi and a 2018 condition third-round draft pick. “You never like to give up a guy like Sami because he’s such a competitive player and has done so many good things for us," Anaheim general manager Bob Murray said. "It probably wasn’t easy for them to give up Adam either. Hopefully this one works out for both teams.” The Blue Jackets rebounded from a 3-1 loss at Montreal on Monday with a 3-2 shootout win over Carolina 24 hours later, the eighth victory in nine games for the Metropolitan Division leaders. Cam Atkinson and Artemi Panarin converted both attempts in the shootout for Columbus, which improved to a league-best 8-0-1 in games that went to overtime.

TV: 7 p.m. ET; Prime Ticket (Anaheim), FSN Ohio (Columbus), NHL.TV

ABOUT THE DUCKS (11-10-4): With leading scorer Rickard Rakell missing the last three games and top centers Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler each out for a length time, Murray made the move to import Henrique, who scored 20 goals last season and a career-best 30 in 2015-16. Henrique played well in New Jersey's run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2011-12, collecting 13 points in 24 games. “He’ll kill penalties. He can help out on the power play. Has got a really good shot. Really good release," Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler said. "I think it’s great for us.”

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (16-8-1): Forward Josh Anderson is meshing well on the top line with Panarin and rookie Pierre-Luc Dubois, scoring his ninth goal Tuesday to extend his point streak to a career-best four games. “You can see Andy is feeling it, too,” coach John Tortorella told the Columbus Dispatch. “He thinks that he should be doing these things (and) that he needs to take it to another level. ... Because there is another level with Andy." The power play is still sputtering, converting on 1 of 29 chances over the past dozen games.

                        OVERTIME

                        1. Blue Jackets G Sergei Bobrovsky has not allowed more than two goals in eight consecutive starts.

                        2. Blandisi has eight goals and 18 assists in 68 NHL games.

                        3. Columbus has won three straight overall and three in a row at home against the Ducks.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 3, Ducks 2

                            Preview: Sharks at Panthers

                            Gracenote
                            Nov 30, 2017

The Florida Panthers hope the third time is the charm as they attempt to extend their winning streak to a season-high three games on Friday against the visiting San Jose Sharks. Florida exited the Metropolitan area with a pair of one-goal victories, highlighted by Roberto Luongo becoming the second goalie in NHL history to win 200 games with two different teams following a 3-2 triumph versus New Jersey on Monday.

Luongo, who is expected to get the start on Friday, turned aside all 35 shots he faced in a 2-0 victory over the Sharks on Nov. 16 to give coach Bob Boughner a win in his return to San Jose. Boughner served as an assistant coach for the Sharks in the previous two seasons before becoming the bench boss with Florida. The Panthers are just 5-4-2 at home and face a San Jose club that has secured at least a point in seven of nine (6-2-1) away from the SAP Center. "Our style is good for the road, but I think our style is good for wherever we are playing," defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic said after the Sharks opened their four-game road trip with a 3-1 win at free-falling Philadelphia.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (San Jose), FSN Florida

ABOUT THE SHARKS (13-8-2): Veteran Joe Thornton extended his point streak to four games with a power-play goal against the Flyers, giving him two goals and three assists in that stretch. Logan Couture set up Thornton for that goal and also assisted on a second-period tally from Vlasic, giving him back-to-back multi-point performances. Aaron Dell, who is in line to start back-to-back games for the first time in his NHL career, turned aside 22 shots in place of the injured Martin Jones (undisclosed) on Tuesday.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (10-12-2): Colton Scevior and Nick Bjugstad each scored a goal in the first encounter versus San Jose and both centers notched an assist in Florida's 5-4 win over the New York Rangers on Tuesday. Jonathan Huberdeau (team-leading 17 assists, 25 points) collected a goal and two assists in that contest after mustering just one point (an assist) in his previous six games. Fellow forward Vincent Trocheck leads the club with 10 goals, but has just two in his last nine outings.

                            OVERTIME

                            1. San Jose F Joonas Donskoi (upper body) is considered "day-to-day and making good progress," general manager Doug Wilson wrote via text message to The Athletic.

                            2. The Panthers' 28th-ranked penalty kill has thwarted all nine short-handed situations over the last four games and both of the Sharks' power plays in the first encounter.

                            3. San Jose has scored with the man advantage in three straight contests and four of its last five after going 0-for-17 in its previous six.

                            PREDICTION: Sharks 3, Panthers 2

                                Preview: Kings at Blues

The St. Louis Blues were perfect in their own rink during October but have been just average at Scottrade Center since, needing a victory over the visiting Los Angeles Kings on Friday to clinch a winning five-game homestand. The Blues were 5-0-0 at home in October and have gone 4-4-0 in their last eight games in St. Louis after dropping a 3-2 decision against Anaheim on Wednesday.

“For me, right now, we’re not consistently hard enough to play against at home,” Blues coach Mike Yeo told reporters. “It seems like we do it for a game and then we kind of back off a game. … Whether we just come to the rink with the assumption that the result is going our way, I’m not sure. We earned the position that we’re in. We’re in a good spot, but we have to remember that we earned it.” St. Louis still is just one point behind Tampa Bay (36) for the most in the league and is 5-1-0 in its last six meetings with Los Angeles, including a 4-2 home victory on Oct. 30. Los Angeles has turned things around following a baffling 1-6-1 stretch, recording three straight wins - including a 5-2 victory at Washington on Thursday in which Marian Gaborik scored a pair of goals. The 35-year-old Slovakian was playing in just his fourth game of the season due to injuries and pulled within two of both 400 goals and 800 points.

ABOUT THE KINGS (15-8-3): Los Angeles earned a big victory on Thursday without a point from its top three scorers - captain Anze Kopitar (12 goals, 16 assists), Dustin Brown (10, 11) and defenseman Drew Doughty (four, 14). Rookie forward Jonny Brodzinski scored his second NHL goal and Jussi Jokinen netted the go-ahead tally - his first goal in eight contests since being acquired from Edmonton. Jonathan Quick made 27 saves for his third straight victory (four goals allowed in that span) but has yet to play on back-to-back nights this season and is 8-11-3 lifetime versus St. Louis.

ABOUT THE BLUES (17-7-1): St. Louis has allowed a pair of power-play goals in each of its last two games and dropped to 27th in the league in penalty-killing (17.9 percent) through Wednesday’s contests. “I think we’ve got to stop the bleeding now and find a way to get better,” forward Kyle Brodziak told reporters. “We’ve still got time, but a game like (Wednesday), the penalty kill could have found a way to win a game for us, and instead, we found a way to lose the game.” Jaden Schwartz has recorded 15 points in his last 11 games and leads the team with 32.

                                OVERTIME

                                1. St. Louis RW Vladimir Tarasenko, who is second on the team behind Schwartz (13) with 12 goals, has notched six points in his last four contests.

                                2. Los Angeles C Torrey Mitchell has yet to play his first game since being acquired from Montreal on Nov. 23 due to visa issues.

                                3. Blues C Patrik Berglund, who missed the team's first 24 games due to shoulder surgery, registered three shots in his season debut on Wednesday.

                                PREDICTION: Blues 4, Kings 3
