    Preview: Grizzlies at Knicks

    Gracenote
    Dec 5, 2017

The New York Knicks have been outmatched without their top two scorers the last two games, and they hope for at least one of them to return when the Memphis Grizzlies pay a visit Wednesday night. Playing without Kristaps Porzingis (ankle, illness) and Tim Hardaway Jr. (leg), the Knicks fell behind by as many as 38 points in Monday's 115-97 loss at Indiana, their fifth defeat in six games.

Porzingis appears closer to returning for a New York team that hopes to build on a 10-5 record at home. The Grizzlies were able to snap an 11-game losing streak with a 95-92 victory over Minnesota on Monday, their first win since firing coach David Fizdale last month. "It's been awhile," interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters. "You almost forgot what it felt like to win because guys want it so bad, and they're emotionally invested. Every loss that kept popping up became a heavier and heavier weight." Marc Gasol's 21 points led the way for Memphis, which has still lost five in a row on the road.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Memphis), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (8-15): Gasol was at the center of the recent organizational shift for Memphis, first apologizing to fans for the team's lackluster play and then getting benched in the fourth quarter prior to Fizdale's firing. The 32-year-old big man is averaging 21.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals in December after going for 17.8, 8.5 and 0.3 in the team's difficult November, and he is fully invested in a turnaround for a squad that will get some key pieces back soon. "It was the biggest regular-season win that I have ever been a part of," Gasol told reporters Monday.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (11-12): Center Enes Kanter has been a steady contributor in his first season with New York but was part of a starting unit that faltered at Indiana, prompting coach Jeff Hornacek to replace all five starters at once early in the third quarter. "When he takes all five out that means we're not competing out there," Kanter told the New York Daily News. "Yeah (I wanted to go back in), but I can't do nothing about it. Take me out, take me out. Take everybody out. He's the boss." Kanter was held to a season-low seven points and Michael Beasley - who is filling in for Porzingis - had 13 but also a team-high five turnovers in just 14 minutes.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Memphis G Tyreke Evans is averaging 18 points and 7.5 assists while making 10-of-20 3-pointers in four starts while filling in for the injured Mike Conley.

    2. Grizzlies SF Chandler Parsons (knee) has missed three of the last four games.

    3. The teams split two meetings last season, with Porzingis' 21 points leading the Knicks to a win in the one encounter at Madison Square Garden.

    PREDICTION: Knicks 101, Grizzlies 95

        Preview: Warriors at Hornets

        Gracenote
        Dec 5, 2017

The Golden State Warriors watched one of their MVPs go down with an ankle injury and saw the other one ejected from the game but still managed to knock off the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday. The Warriors expect to have one of them back when they visit the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday.

It's unlikely to be a happy homecoming for Stephen Curry, who grew up in North Carolina and puts up big numbers during Golden State's annual visits, after he suffered a sprained ankle in Monday's 125-115 win at New Orleans. "I always look forward to that trip," Curry, who left the arena in a walking boot and on crutches but had x-rays come back negative, told reporters of Charlotte. "And playing in that arena and playing in front of people that seen me grow up. ... Hopefully my fans show up and support the other guys if I'm not out there and we have a good game." The Hornets snapped a four-game slide with a 104-94 win over the Orlando Magic on Monday but shot just 40.5 percent from the floor, including 3-of-17 from 3-point range. The Hornets entered play on Tuesday 26th in the league in field-goal percentage (.443) while Golden State (.514) leads the NBA.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (19-6): Forward Kevin Durant was ejected with 1:14 left in Monday's game after an altercation with Pelicans center DeMarcus Cousins - the third time he has been tossed this season. "I got to be more focused, I got to be more poised," Durant told reporters. "I can't let anybody take me off my game. I've been in the league too long. Especially somebody like Cousins, we know that he's feisty, we know that he's emotional. We know that he plays that way, so I can't get involved in any of that. That's who he is. I got to be me." Golden State, which is averaging 127 points during a four-game winning streak, was already without backup point guard Shaun Livingston on Monday after he drew a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
ABOUT THE HORNETS (9-13): While the Warriors were losing their star point guard to an injury, Charlotte was getting its back as Kemba Walker scored 29 points on Monday after missing two games with a shoulder injury. "I feel like when I'm around things are different, and then when I come back, it changes," Walker told reporters. "That's the kind of guy I am. I'm the leader of this team. My team goes as I go." Walker put in solid work on the defensive end in his return as well, grabbing three steals as the Hornets forced 20 turnovers in the win.

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. Warriors SG Klay Thompson is shooting 61.1 percent from the floor over the last four games.

        2. Hornets C Dwight Howard (12,361) grabbed nine rebounds on Monday to move into 19th place on the all-time list.

        3. Golden State took the last six in the series, including three straight at Charlotte.

        PREDICTION: Warriors 123, Hornets 111

            Preview: Pistons at Bucks

            Gracenote
            Dec 5, 2017

Although an upcoming homestand is loaded with challenging opponents, the Detroit Pistons will be happy to finish a road-heavy portion of their schedule Wednesday at Milwaukee. The Pistons dropped the first three legs of their current four-game road trip and they are 4-6 overall since beginning a stretch in which they play nine of 11 away from home.

That span began with a 99-95 loss at Milwaukee on Nov. 15, and it continued with Monday's 96-93 setback at San Antonio. "We've got to be able to sustain our offensive energy better," coach Stan Van Gundy told reporters after the loss. "I probably overplayed guys tonight, but our bench just struggled, I mean they just struggled." Van Gundy will need more contributions up and down the roster on an upcoming three-game homestand that includes Golden State and Boston, and will need a complete effort against Milwaukee, which won eight of its last 12. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 40 points in the Bucks' loss to the Celtics on the road Monday night and ranks second in the NBA in scoring with 29.9 points per game.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

ABOUT THE PISTONS (14-9): Van Gundy referenced a rocky outing for his reserves, but one bright spot was the play of forward Stanley Johnson, who scored 14 points and grabbed a career high-tying 10 rebounds in his first game off the bench after 19 starts. Anthony Tolliver got the surprise start in Johnson's place and was held to one basket and one assist in 24 minutes. Guard Reggie Jackson, who was held to a season-low six points in the loss at Milwaukee last month, scored 27 against the Spurs and topped the 20-point mark in four of his last five games.

ABOUT THE BUCKS (12-10): Milwaukee committed just 10 turnovers, shot 87.5 percent from the line and made a respectable 9-of-21 3-pointers in the loss to the Celtics, but their season-long struggles on the boards were an issue. Boston had a 45-28 advantage on the glass and the Bucks managed only three on the offensive end, well below their NBA-worst average of seven per game. Point guard Eric Bledsoe scored at least 18 points in six straight games and is 9-for-18 from 3-point range over his last four contests after going 7-for-34 through his first nine with Milwaukee.

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. Detroit SG Avery Bradley, who is averaging 25.5 points while making 9-of-16 3-pointers in two games against the Bucks, is 8-for 33 from the floor on the road trip.

            2. Bucks C John Henson missed all six of his shots at Boston after finishing at 50 percent or better from the floor in each of his previous eight games.

            3. Pistons C Andre Drummond has three straight double-doubles and entered Tuesday ranked third in the NBA with 17.

            PREDICTION: Bucks 104, Pistons 102

The New Orleans Pelicans got a little feisty while going up against the defending champions on Monday, but it still didn't result in a win. The Pelicans will try to keep their emotions in check and hang onto a lead when they host the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday.

New Orleans squandered a 20-point halftime lead and frustration seemed to boil over in the final minutes as a slew of technical fouls were handed out and DeMarcus Cousins was ejected. "I keep telling our guys, as bad as this loss is, what we keep proving is that we have the ability to play extended minutes with the world champs," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters after the 125-115 loss. "We have to now find a way to not do it for 32 or 36 minutes, but for 48." New Orleans is operating with frontcourt star Anthony Davis (groin) sidelined, and the Nuggets are in the same predicament with Nikola Jokic (ankle) considered day-to-day. Denver is 10-2 at home but just 3-8 on the road after kicking off a six-game trip with a 122-105 loss at Western Conference-worst Dallas on Monday.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, Altitude (Denver), FS New Orleans

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (13-10): The Dallas Mavericks are 25th in the league in scoring average (100.8) heading into play on Tuesday but shot 57 percent from the floor against Denver on Monday, and the defense is not where it needs to be. "They get their 3s from dribble penetration," Nuggets coach Michael Malone told reporters of the Mavericks. "When you can't guard their guards and they live in the paint for scores and they live in the paint for kick-out 3s, they got everything tonight. You're not going to beat anybody when you're giving up that kind of productivity in the paint and behind the arc." Jokic, who anchors that defense from the middle, is traveling with the team but is unlikely to return by Wednesday.
ABOUT THE PELICANS (12-12): Davis had an MRI on his groin reveal no major damage, and he is considered day-to-day with a left adductor strain. New Orleans is making up for the loss of production by asking more of its backcourt, and Jrue Holiday (34) and E'Twaun Moore (27) combined for 61 points on Monday. Holiday is playing off the point with Rajon Rondo running the offense and has seen his scoring tick up to an average of 22.6 points in the last five games, with Rondo averaging nine assists in that span.

                BUZZER BEATERS

                1. Nuggets SG Jamal Murray is 9-of-16 from 3-point range in the last two games after going 5-of-36 over the previous eight contests.

                2. Moore is 24-of-36 from the floor in the last three games, including 13-of-16 from 3-point range.

                3. Murray scored 31 points and Denver shot 62.9 percent from the floor in a 146-114 home win over New Orleans on Nov. 17.

                PREDICTION: Pelicans 123, Nuggets 121

                    Preview: Heat at Spurs

                    Gracenote
                    Dec 5, 2017

The San Antonio Spurs continue a difficult stretch in which they play six games in nine days when the inconsistent Miami Heat pay a visit on Wednesday night. The Spurs, who are still waiting for All-Star Kawhi Leonard (quad) to play his first game this season, have won seven of their last nine after rallying for a 96-93 victory over Detroit at home Monday.

“I thought the guys in a tough back-to-back did a heck of a job to hang in there, keep playing and trusting each other,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich told reporters after his team had seven players score in double figures Monday. “We made some great plays down the stretch from a lot of people. A lot of people participated.” The Spurs will go for their 11th straight victory against the Heat, including the 2014 NBA finals, and rolled to a 117-100 victory in Miami on Oct. 25 as LaMarcus Aldridge scored 31. The Heat have dropped three of four since stringing together a season-high three-game winning streak after getting pounded by Golden State 123-95 on Sunday. “We just look like some games we have a lot of energy and come out battling,” Miami guard Goran Dragic told the Miami Herald. “But some games, I don’t know how to describe it but it’s like we didn’t eat all day.”

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Miami), FSN Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE HEAT (11-12): Dragic managed 20 points against Golden State and leads the team at 17.6 per game while backcourt mate Dion Waiters (15.0) must recover from a 1-for-10 performance Sunday. Miami is expected to be without center Hassan Whiteside (14.9 points, 12.7 rebounds) for the fourth straight contest with a knee injury and the Heat is 3-5 without him in the lineup. Center Kelly Olynyk has stepped up in Whiteside’s absence, averaging 14 points in the last three games, and guard Josh Richardson scored 16.8 per contest in the past four.

ABOUT THE SPURS (16-8): Aldridge has carried San Antonio most of the season, averaging more than 10 points better than anyone else on the team (22.8) after scoring 17 against Detroit and missing the previous night’s loss versus Oklahoma City. Starting small forward Kyle Anderson will miss 2-to-3 weeks with a MCL sprain of his left knee and Rudy Gay had 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists while starting in his place Monday. Center Pau Gasol recorded 15 points against Detroit after managing 17 combined in his previous three contests.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Miami’s rookie C Bam Adebayo has drained 14-of-20 from the field over the last four contests.

                    2. San Antonio PG Tony Parker is averaging 7.8 points in four games since returning from a quad injury and the Spurs are 4-0 with him in the lineup this season.

                    3. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra owns 451 career wins with the team and is three from tying Pat Riley for the franchise record.

                    PREDICTION: Spurs 112, Heat 100

                        Preview: Timberwolves at Clippers

                        Gracenote
                        Dec 5, 2017

The Minnesota Timberwolves were able to rebound from a road loss by defeating the Los Angeles Clippers over the weekend, and they'll try for a repeat performance when they visit the Clippers on Wednesday. The Timberwolves, who exchanged wins and losses over their last nine games, topped Los Angeles 112-106 at home before dropping a three-point decision at Memphis on Monday.

"Our defense in the first half hurt us badly," coach Tom Thibodeau told the media after the loss. "I thought it was a little better in the second half. We didn't come up with any loose balls at the end, and that could have separated the game." Jimmy Butler was a force down the stretch against the Clippers and stayed hot in Memphis with 30 points, while leading scorer Karl-Anthony Towns was held to seven in 38 minutes. Los Angeles has lost all three of its games since losing star forward Blake Griffin to a knee injury, but at least the banged-up squad has enjoyed some time off with no game action since Sunday's loss to Minnesota. Forward Danilo Gallinari, who has missed 13 straight games with a hip issue, could return for this one, while point guard Milos Teodosic (foot) has been practicing with the team's G-League affiliate.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN North (Minnesota), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (14-11): Thibodeau continues to give his starters heavy minutes, utilizing just three reserves in each of the last two games. Forward Andrew Wiggins entered Tuesday fourth in the NBA in playing time (36.9), while Butler was tied for sixth (36.7), Towns was 19th (34.6) and point guard Jeff Teague 28th (33.9). A favorable stretch for any fatigued players is on the horizon, as Minnesota has three days off after the game in Los Angeles and then opens a five-game homestand Sunday night against Dallas.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (8-14): Los Angeles is 3-10 without Gallinari, who knows that a sense of urgency has developed around the locker room and hopes that he has no issues adjusting to game action without Griffin on the floor. "Hopefully not a long time (to adjust), we need to win games right away, right now," Gallinari told reporters at practice Tuesday. "To not have Blake is different, but we need to find ways to win games." Center DeAndre Jordan is doing all he can to fill the void and is averaging 15.5 points on 14-of-15 shooting and 14.5 rebounds over the last two games.

                        BUZZER BEATERS
