Winnipeg Jets vs. Nashville Predators Preview and Predictions 05-10-2018

    9th May 2018 by Gracenote
the two best teams in the regular season have battled through six incredible games in the western conference semifinals, and now it is time to decide whether the winnipeg jets or the nashville predators will advance to the conference final. the predators host the jets in thursday's game 7 - the finale of a series in which neither team has won consecutive games, the road team has prevailed four times, and both have the same amount of shots (177) and attempts (338) playing 5-on-5.

"it's a really tight series," nashville captain roman josi told reporters wednesday. "even the games where the score doesn't really show it, they're all tight games. they could've gone either way." the key thursday could be who scores first, as the predators jumped ahead in games 4 and 6 and then deployed a defense-focused mindset in the final two periods to keep the jets at bay. in between, winnipeg survived a first-period onslaught in game 5 before pounding in four second-period goals en route to a 6-2 victory, using the speed and precise passing that nashville's defense negated in games 4 and 6. "have the confidence that you're going to go out and perform at your best," winnipeg coach paul maurice told reporters after wednesday's practice. "enjoy it, the whole part. the nerves before the game, the tension of the game, the excitement of the game."
tv: 8 p.m. et, nbc sports network, cbc, sportsnet, tva
about the jets: winnipeg had chances in game 6 but saw its power play, one of the nhl's best this season, come up empty four times in the 4-0 defeat - three times in the opening period with the jets trailing 1-0. mark scheifele and blake wheeler, who have combined for 12 goals and 15 assists in the postseason, were a combined minus-4 with three shots apiece in game 6, while 29-goal scorer nikolaj ehlers has not scored in the playoffs. connor hellebuyck gave up a goal 62 seconds into game 6 and finished with 25 saves, his lowest total of the series.
about the predators: nashville is alive thanks in large part to its top line, as filip forsberg and viktor arvidsson each scored twice with one assist in game 6, and center ryan johansen added two assists as each member of the trio finished with a plus-4 rating in an elimination game on the road. pekka rinne has been pulled twice against the jets, but the vezina finalist made 34 saves in his strongest game of the series. the predators were outstanding defensively in front of rinne, blocking 23 shots in the game and holding winnipeg to just four shots in killing off the four jets power plays.
    overtime
    1. thursday marks the first home game 7 (and only third overall) in predators history, and the first game 7 of any type in jets franchise history.

    2. nashville c mike fisher did not practice tuesday or wednesday with an undisclosed injury, and if he cannot play, f calle jarnkrok would slide into the middle between f scott hartnell and f ryan hartman.

    3. winnipeg has won two of three games in nashville in the series, outscoring the predators 14-8.

    prediction: jets 5, predators 4

#4 FILLET OF SOLE drops in class (-10) is the overall speed leader in this claiming field racing at, or about, today's distance of 8½ furlongs on the dirt, and has turned in "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in each of his last five starts, hitting the board in three of those outings, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in his 4th race back. Jockey Luis Saez, and Trainer Todd Pletcher send him to the post ... they've hit the board with 54% of more than 100 entries saddled as a team to date. #3 ONE MORE ROUND, a 5-1 shot, has hit the board in four of his last five starts, winning twice, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in his 3rd race back.

#5 LUCKY ME LUCKY YOU (ML=5/1)
        #3 PARKERELIZABETH (ML=6/1)

LUCKY ME LUCKY YOU - The February 8th event at Turfway Park was at a class level of (74). Dropping to a lower level significantly, so she should be in a good position to win. The latest fig of 70 is the best last race speed fig in the group. Recent speed figs show dominant pattern of improvement. PARKERELIZABETH - Handicapping information show this racer with 3 improving speed ratings. Court should be on a live one in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 CHOCOLATE BOUQUET (ML=5/2), #1 OLDFASHIONED ANGEL (ML=3/1), #7 LIL MS PERFECTION (ML=7/2),

CHOCOLATE BOUQUET - Doubtful for this thoroughbred to do much running with no recent success in a short distance race. I usually try to beat these types of morning-line choices off the long layoff. OLDFASHIONED ANGEL - Showed very little in the last affair. Really can't expect a reversal of fortune today. Hasn't hit the board in any sprint contests recently. Unlikely to see her doing it this time around either. LIL MS PERFECTION - Tough to take this runner at the odds after the finish (sixth) in the last affair. A pattern of decreasing speed figs 67/58/45 for this horse.

            # 3 LISKA 12/1

            # 4 KNIGHT SOLAIRE 5/1

            # 1 WALK ON WATER 2/1

LISKA looks decent to best this group of animals and could score at a price in here. Will almost certainly come out solid - I have liked the way this gelding has moved speedily to the lead recently. KNIGHT SOLAIRE - Will almost certainly come out strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved sharply to the front end recently. Looks very good for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid figs in dirt sprint races recently. WALK ON WATER - Boasts reliable Equibase speed figs on average overall when matched with the rest of this field. Could beat this group given the 88 speed figure garnered in his last outing.

              # 4 GOLD MAN 9/5

              # 2 TIPSY MOOSE 2/1

              # 5 BESSIE'S BOY 10/1

GOLD MAN is the best wager in this race. McClellan has this gelding racing well and is a formidable choice based on the very strong Equibase Speed Figs garnered in sprint races lately. This gelding with Hernandez in the irons makes him a key contender. Has formidable early speed and ought to fare admirably versus this group of animals. TIPSY MOOSE - Overall the speed figures of this pony look respectable in this race. McMahon has one of the top winning percentages in this group of animals with entries running at this distance and surface. BESSIE'S BOY - He has a competitive distance/surface win record - 9 for 28.

                #4 BUSTAMOVE (ML=5/2)
                #2 HAUS (ML=8/1)

GENERAL SHERMAN - I think the shorter trip will help this gelding stay the trip. Trainer Chleborad moves this horse down in the class scale to face a lower level today. Look for a good effort given this drop. PP data show this thoroughbred with three improving speed ratings. Birzer should be on a live horse in this event. BUSTAMOVE - Moquett drops him down to this class level. You don't need too much more from the pp lines to think this horse should run well at this level. Ran a lackluster race at Oaklawn Park in the last race. Racing under normal track conditions puts this gelding at the top of my contenders list. HAUS - Martin drops him down to this class level. You don't need too much more handicapping knowledge to figure that this horse is in a good spot at this level. Three consecutive improved Equibase speed figures (24-38-48) make this horse a dominant contender.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #3 MAGIC MIRACLE (ML=4/1), #5 STRIKING EKATI (ML=9/2), #8 CONQUEST ASSASSIN (ML=6/1),

MAGIC MIRACLE - Not probable for this horse to make an impact with no recent good showings in a short distance event. STRIKING EKATI - Didn't close any ground whatsoever on Apr 28th. Hard to bet on this time out at the expected odds. CONQUEST ASSASSIN - Just can't wager on any steed right back after he doesn't finish in the money after any long breather. When looking at today's class figure, he will have to garner a much better speed rating than last time out to be competitive in this dirt sprint.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Game 7 Betting Preview and Odds: Jets at Predators

Winnipeg Jets at Nashville Predators (-165, 5.5)

                    Series tied 3-3.

The two best teams in the NHL this season have battled through six incredible games in the Western Conference semifinals, and now it is time to decide whether the Winnipeg Jets or the Nashville Predators will advance to the conference final. The Predators host the Jets in Thursday's Game 7, the finale of a series in which neither team has won consecutive games, the road team has prevailed four times, and both teams have the same amount of shots (177) and attempts (338).

“It’s a really tight series,” Nashville captain Roman Josi told reporters Wednesday. “Even the games where the score doesn’t really show it, they’re all tight games. They could’ve gone either way.” The key Thursday could be who scores first, as the Predators jumped ahead in Games 4 and 6 and then deployed a defensive-focus mindset in the final two periods of both games to keep the Jets at bay. In between, Winnipeg survived a first-period onslaught in Game 5 before pounding in four second-period goals en route to a 6-2 victory, using the speed and precise passing that Nashville’s defense negated in Games 4 and 6. “Have the confidence that you’re going to go out and perform at your best,” Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice told reporters after Wednesday’s practice. “Enjoy it, the whole part. The nerves before the game, the tension of the game, the excitement of the game.”

                    BETTING STATS:

LINE HISTORY: The Predators opened as -165 moneyline favorites for Game 7 and as of Wednesday night that number has not moved. 66 percent of early moneyline wagers are on the favored Preds. The total hit betting boards at 5.5 and has yet to move.

                    Pekka Rinne 42 13 4 2.31 .927 8

ABOUT THE JETS (59-23-9-2, 45-46 O/U): Winnipeg had chances in Game 6 but saw its power play, one of the NHL’s best this season, come up empty four times with the man advantage in the 4-0 defeat – three times in the opening period with the Jets trailing the game 1-0.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (60-23-4-7, 47-46 O/U): Nashville is alive thanks in large part to its top line, as Filip Forsberg and Viktor Arvidsson each scored twice with one assist in Game 6, and center Ryan Johansen added two assists – each member of the line finishing plus-4 in an elimination game on the road.
