Indians vs. Rangers Preview and Predictions

    by Gracenote on 07/19/2018

All-Star Shin-Soo Choo looks to extend his streak of reaching base to 52 consecutive games when the Texas Rangers host the Cleveland Indians on Friday for the opener of their three-game series. Choo recently surpassed Julio Franco's franchise-record single-season mark of 46 straight contests set in 1993 and is closing in on Will Clark's overall streak of 58 games bridging the 1995 and 1996 campaigns.

Choo has been a bright spot in a lackluster season - the Rangers are 15 games below .500 - as he is batting .293 with 18 home runs and 43 RBIs. "Every hitter has a different goal, but my goal is always to get on base, get a hit, walk or get hit by a pitch," Choo told reporters. "It doesn't matter. That mentality makes this on-base streak special. Experience is a big help. When you play this long, you see a lot of pitches, different styles and different type of pitchers." The Indians hold a 7 1/2-game lead over Minnesota in the American League Central and made a move to shore up a shaky bullpen by acquiring two-time All-Star Brad Hand and Adam Cimber from San Diego on Thursday for highly regarded catching prospect Francisco Mejia. Cleveland All-Stars Jose Ramirez (.302 average, 29 homers, 70 RBIs) and Francisco Lindor (.291-25-62) have combined for 112 extra-base hits - 57 by the former.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FS Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (8-6, 2.24 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Martin Perez (2-4, 7.67)

Bauer is 3-1 with a 1.27 ERA and 54 strikeouts over 42 2/3 innings in his last six starts. The 26-year-old ranks fourth in the major leagues with 175 strikeouts - 21 shy of the career high he set last year - and has fanned 10 or more batters on eight occasions. Bauer is 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA in five career starts against the Rangers, including a no-decision on April 30 in which he gave up two runs and four hits with 11 strikeouts in 6 2/3 frames.

Perez was sharp in a loss to Baltimore on Saturday, giving up just one run and five hits over seven innings. The outing was the first in 2 1/2 months for the 27-year-old as he was sidelined with a right elbow injury he initially suffered during an offseason incident with a bull. Perez is 0-2 with a 9.20 ERA in four career appearances (three starts) against the Indians but has held Lindor (0-for-5) in check.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. The Indians scored 25 runs while taking two of three from the Rangers from April 30-May 2.

    2. Texas has lost 10 of its 13 games this month.

    3. Cleveland All-Star LF Michael Brantley is batting .316 with six two-hit performances in July.

    PREDICTION: Indians 4, Rangers 1

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Milwaukee Brewers Preview and Predictions 07-20-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 19th July 2018 by Gracenote
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat out a number of other National League contenders - including the Milwaukee Brewers - to acquire the services of Manny Machado during the All-Star break, adding even more thump to an offense that leads the NL in home runs. Two days after being acquired in a six-player deal, the four-time All-Star is expected to make his debut for the Dodgers on Friday as they visit the Brewers for the opener of their three-game series.

Los Angeles sent five prospects to Baltimore on Wednesday to fill the void both at shortstop and in the batting order that has existed since Corey Seager was forced to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery after playing only 26 games. The Dodgers, who have belted an NL-high 129 homers this season, figure to utilize the 26-year-old Machado as their regular cleanup hitter after he finished the first half ranked sixth in the American League in blasts (24) and tied for fourth in RBIs (65) while playing for the league-worst Orioles. The Brewers could use a bit of a spark after dropping a season-high six straight while going 1-7 on an eight-game road trip prior to the break. Milwaukee has won six of its last seven at Miller Park, however, and owns the second-best home record in the NL (30-18).

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Rich Hill (2-4, 4.55 ERA) vs. Brewers LH Wade Miley (1-1, 2.38)

Hill has been steady over his last three starts (3.38 ERA, 22 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings) but may be on the verge of losing his spot in the rotation as Los Angeles has dropped seven of his 11 turns. The 38-year-old pitched in relief for the first time since 2014 on Saturday, walking two and striking out two in one hitless frame versus the Los Angeles Angels. Jesus Aguilar (1-for-2) is the only Brewer to go deep against Hill, who is 2-1 with a 3.92 ERA in seven career appearances (six starts) versus Milwaukee.

Miley will make his fourth start of the season after allowing three runs and eight hits over 11 1/2 innings in his first three turns, including a loss at Pittsburgh on July 12 in which he yielded two runs and four hits over five frames. It was the first outing since May 8 due to an oblique injury for the 31-year-old native of Louisiana, who issued five walks to raise his season total to nine - matching his number of strikeouts on the year. Miley owns a 3-5 record and 4.16 ERA in 12 career starts and one relief appearance against the Dodgers.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. Dodgers SS-OF Chris Taylor is expected to move into a super-utility role but should make the majority of his starts at second base following the acquisition of Machado.

      2. Aguilar, who leads the NL with 24 homers, went 6-for-27 during the Brewers' recent eight-game road trip.

      3. Machado is 4-for-25 with no homers in six career games against Milwaukee.

      PREDICTION: Dodgers 7, Brewers 4

Twins vs. Royals Preview and Predictions

        by Gracenote on 07/19/2018

The Kansas City Royals are saddled with the worst record in the majors as they resume play after the All-Star break by hosting the Minnesota Twins on Friday. The 2015 World Series champions are an abysmal 27-68 as they enter the opener of a three-game set with the Twins.

Kansas City lost 13 of its final 15 games prior to the break and one of the two victories during the stretch occurred in a road contest against the Twins on July 10. All-Star catcher Salvador Perez is batting just .221 but he finished play prior to the break by going 8-for-26 with two homers, and seven RBIs during a six-game hitting streak. Minnesota was on a tear before the stoppage by winning nine of 11 games and scoring 10 or more runs on three occasions. Second baseman Brian Dozier has four homers and 13 RBIs over the past eight games and he is being mentioned in trade rumors with the Twins 7 1/2 games behind the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Kyle Gibson (4-6, 3.42 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (5-8, 4.59)

Gibson has won back-to-back starts in which he allowed four runs and nine hits and struck out 18 over 15 innings. The 30-year-old is holding opposing batters to a .197 average in nine road outings while going 2-2 with a 2.84 ERA. Gibson blanked Kansas City on five hits over seven innings in a no-decision on May 29 and is 6-4 with a 3.22 ERA in 16 career turns against the Royals.

Duffy struck out 17 over 13 scoreless innings in his final two starts before the All-Star break, including a July 9 no-decision in which he gave up six hits over six scoreless innings against the Twins. The 29-year-old is 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in seven home starts this season and is winless in his past eight turns at Kauffman Stadium dating back to last season. Duffy has a 0.75 ERA in two no-decisions against Minnesota this season and is 5-1 with a 2.27 ERA in 19 career appearances (15 starts) against the Twins.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. The teams have split six meetings this season with the Royals taking two of three in Kansas City from May 28-30.

        2. Royals OF Paulo Orlando, who is batting just .172 in 87 at-bats this season, is a scorching 8-for-13 with two walks against Gibson.

        3. Minnesota LF Eddie Rosario is 13-for-31 with one homer and seven RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak.

        PREDICTION: Twins 8, Royals 5

Giants vs. Athletics Preview and Predictions

          by Gracenote on 07/19/2018

The Oakland Athletics finished the first half of their season as the hottest team in baseball due in part to their strong showing against National League competition. The red-hot Athletics attempt to pick up where they left off last weekend when they host the San Francisco Giants for the opener of their three-game interleague series.

Oakland entered the All-Star break having won 21 of its last 27 games, thrusting itself into the conversation for the final wild-card spot in the American League after beginning the season with a 34-36 record. The Athletics went 6-1 against the NL West during that run, taking all four of its meetings with San Diego before winning two of three in San Francisco to wrap up the first half of the campaign with a 9-3 mark in interleague play. The Giants haven't been more than five games above or below the break-even mark all year, but they begin the second half of the season four games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West after finishing 2017 an NL-worst 64-98. Journeyman infielder Chase d'Arnaud has been a spark atop the batting order for San Francisco lately, collecting two hits - including a pair of solo homers - in each of his last three starts.

TV: 9:35 p.m. ET, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco), NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Dereck Rodriguez (4-1, 2.89 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Edwin Jackson (1-1, 2.59)

Rodriguez has settled in after a bit of an uneven beginning to his major-league career, as he has yielded a total of three runs over 23 innings in his last four appearances (three starts). The 26-year-old Texan held the Chicago Cubs hitless over the final three frames of a 13-inning victory on July 11 to extend his winning streak to three games. Rodriguez is allowing opponents to bat .304 while going 1-1 with a 3.79 ERA on the road entering his first career interleague outing.

Jackson has been everything Oakland could have asked for through four starts, helping the team win three of his turns while holding the opposition to fewer than three earned runs each time. The 34-year-old journeyman took a hard-luck loss last Friday at San Francisco, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks across six innings. Andrew McCutchen (16-for-41, three homers) has fared well against Jackson, who is 5-5 with a 4.56 ERA in 13 career appearances (12 starts) versus the Giants.

          WALK-OFFS

          1. Athletics OF Stephen Piscotty is riding a nine-game hitting streak and has homered five times over that span, but only one of his 12 blasts this year have come at home.

          2. San Francisco has hit a major league-worst six home runs this month.

          3. Oakland has won 14 of its last 20 home games in the all-time series.

          PREDICTION: Athletics 5, Giants 3

Colorado Rockies vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Preview and Predictions 07-20-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 19th July 2018 by Gracenote
Two teams looking to emerge from the pack in the tight National League West race meet Friday as the Arizona Diamondbacks host the Colorado Rockies for the opener of their three-game series. The Diamondbacks trail the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers by one half-game while Colorado sits two back.

Both teams entered the All-Star break on a tear, with Arizona winning 14 of its last 19 games and Colorado going 13-3 over its last 16 contests, including a three-game sweep of Seattle last weekend. Rockies shortstop Trevor Story was named NL Player of the Week after hitting .400 with three homers and three doubles, and he continued his stellar season with a solo blast in Tuesday's All-Star Game. The Diamondbacks have recovered from a dismal month of May (8-19) thanks in part to the resurgence of Paul Goldschmidt, who is hitting .369 with 14 home runs and 33 RBIs since June 1. "I don't feel like we've hit our stride yet," Arizona's A.J. Pollock told reporters. "We feel like the best of us has yet to come."

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado), FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH German Marquez (8-8, 4.81 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (3-2, 5.03)

Marquez won his third straight start last time out, allowing two runs and five hits over six innings in a 19-2 victory over Arizona on July 11. The 23-year-old Venezuelan has posted a 1.80 ERA and 22-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio during his winning streak. Marquez owns a 1-4 record and 4.29 ERA in 10 career games (nine starts) against Arizona and has struggled to contain Goldschmidt (9-for-17, four home runs).

Ray was encouraged after allowing two runs while recording eight strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in a 5-1 loss at Colorado on July 12. "That's about as good as I've been all year with all my pitches," he told reporters. "I was mixing, and me and (catcher John Ryan Murphy) got on the same page pretty quickly, and whatever he was throwing down, I was throwing it, and it was working." Charlie Blackmon is 15-for-33 with four homers against Ray, who is 3-4 with a 5.52 ERA in 11 career starts versus Colorado.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. The Diamondbacks have won 13 of their last 18 regular-season meetings with the Rockies.

            2. Colorado starting pitchers have posted a 2.25 ERA over 92 innings in their last 15 contests.

            3. The Rockies own a 28-22 road record as opposed to a 23-23 mark at home.

            PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 7, Rockies 3

Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels Preview and Predictions 07-20-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 19th July 2018 by Gracenote
The Houston Astros finished the first half with just two wins fewer than their 2017 World Series champion and look to continue pulling away in the American League West when they visit the Los Angeles Angels on Friday to start a three-game set. The Astros staggered slightly by losing four of seven before the All-Star break, but lead the West by five games over Seattle with Los Angeles 14 back.

Houston's Alex Bregman put a stamp on a outstanding first half of the season with a tie-breaking solo homer in the Midsummer Classic on Tuesday and brings a seven-game hitting streak into the series while teammate Yuli Gurriel has hit safely in 12 straight outings. Dallas Keuchel looks to continue his roll on the mound and takes a 10-2 career record against the Angels into Friday's clash against fellow left-hander Tyler Skaggs, who beat Houston on April 23 with seven scoreless innings. If Los Angeles is ever going to get back into the AL wild-card race it will probably have to start with a strong 10-game homestand coming out of the break, which includes series against the Chicago White Sox and Seattle. All-Star Mike Trout is 10-for-28 in his last eight games for the Angels and teammate Andrelton Simmons has hit safely in six straight contests, going 10-for-27 in that stretch.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), FS West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (7-8, 3.75 ERA) vs. Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (7-5, 2.57)

Keuchel is unbeaten in his last seven starts (4-0), limiting opponents to one or zero earned runs in four of those outings, and has won three straight games. The 30-year-old Oklahoma native held Detroit to six hits over six scoreless innings on July 13 in his last start before the break and boasts a 1.35 ERA in three outings this month. Trout is 14-for-41 with a pair of homers against Keuchel, who owns a 3.67 career ERA versus the Angels over 16 appearances (15 starts).

Skaggs has already set a career high in wins along with strikeouts (105), and can set a club record for a left-handed pitcher with a seventh straight start allowing one or no earned runs Friday. The 27-year-old California native, who will match his career-high with his 18th start, has given up just four earned runs over 38 innings across his last six starts with 41 strikeouts. Jose Altuve is 7-for-18 versus Skaggs, who is 4-2 with a 2.76 ERA lifetime against the Astros.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia can break the tie with Ralph Houk (1,619) for 18th on major league baseball's all-time wins list.

              2. The Astros lead the league with a plus-188 run differential and their starting pitchers own a major league-best 3.02 ERA.

              3. Angels OF Kole Calhoun is 8-for-22 with four homers and six RBIs in his last six contests to raise his batting average 17 points to .187.

              PREDICTION: Astros 5, Angels 2

Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners Preview and Predictions 07-20-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 19th July 2018 by Gracenote
                by Gracenote on 07/19/2018

The Seattle Mariners aim to avoid matching a season-worst five-game losing streak when they host the Chicago White Sox on Friday for the opener of their three-game series. Seattle limped into the All-Star break by being outscored 29-13 over a four-game span but still possesses the fourth-best record (58-39) in the major leagues.

The Mariners are vying to halt the longest postseason drought of the four major sports as they haven't been a playoff participant since 2001. Jean Segura, who went 2-for-2 with a three-run homer in the All-Star Game, was just 5-for-26 with no blasts or RBIs in his final seven contests prior to the break. Chicago owns the third-worst record (33-62) in the majors and has struggled to a 14-33 road record. White Sox All-Star Jose Abreu is struggling this month, hitting just .156 with one homer and five RBIs.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH James Shields (4-10, 4.43 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Wade LeBlanc (5-1, 3.63)

Shields is 2-1 over his last four starts but was pounded for eight runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings by Houston in his one setback during the stretch. The 36-year-old is just 1-5 with a 6.14 ERA in eight road appearances (seven starts) this season, compared to a respectable 3.51 mark in 13 home starts. Shields gave up four runs and six hits over six frames in a loss on April 25 to fall to 5-8 with a 4.66 ERA in 19 career starts against the Mariners.

LeBlanc was unbeaten in 13 starts this season before giving up four runs and six hits over 4 1/3 innings against Colorado in his final turn before the break. The 33-year-old has displayed stellar control with just four walks over 35 1/3 frames in his last six outings and 18 overall this season. LeBlanc gave up two runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief on April 23 and owns a 2.87 ERA in four career appearances (one start) versus the White Sox.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. The Mariners have won five of their last six overall meetings with the White Sox but have lost the last three at home by a combined score of 26-3.

                2. Chicago optioned OF Charlie Tilson to Triple-A Charlotte and plan to make a corresponding move prior to Friday's contest.

                3. Seattle 3B Kyle Seager, who is 8-for-22 with three homers against Shields, has failed to go deep in his last 10 games.

PREDICTION: Mariners 5, White Sox 3

BC Lions vs. Ottawa RedBlacks Preview and Predictions 07-20-2018 in CFL

CFL Previews 17th July 2018 by Gracenote
                  by Gracenote on 07/17/2018

The BC Lions look to build off their memorable Week 5 win when they travel to the nation's capital to face the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday. Ty Long kicked a 16-yard field goal on the final play as the Lions erased a 17-point third-quarter deficit en route to a 20-17 victory against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Travis Lulay's first start at quarterback in nearly 10 months, and they hope to notch back-to-back wins for the first time in a year.

"This should be a great confidence builder," Lulay told reporters. "It could be a big win for us, but it's up to us to see how we respond to it." Ottawa is left to pick up the pieces following a 27-3 home loss to the Calgary Stampeders. The Redblacks were held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since Nov. 1, 2015 and hope to stay in the thick of the East Division race by earning their first victory in three meetings with the Lions. "It never feels good when you get your butt whipped and we did," Ottawa head coach Rick Campbell told reporters. "You have to have a short term memory and move on because the games are just going to keep getting bigger and bigger."

ABOUT THE LIONS (2-2): Lulay hadn't played since suffering a knee injury against Montreal on Sept. 8, 2017, but looked like his old self as he threw for 326 yards and a touchdown en route to earning one of the CFL's Top Performers of the Week honours. Jeremiah Johnson, who leads the team in rushing yards (222), gained 26 on three carries before leaving the contest in the second quarter with an ankle injury and is doubtful for Friday's clash. Chris Rainey accounted for 114 yards from scrimmage in Johnson's absence and will be the feature back on Friday while All-Star linebacker Solomon Elimimian was placed on the six-game injured list with a fractured wrist.

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (2-2): Trevor Harris was limited to 93 yards on 14-of-22 passing while William Powell, who rushed for a season-high 138 yards in the Week 4 win against Montreal, was held to 17 on eight carries in the loss to Calgary last week. Ottawa released cornerback Josh Johnson, who appeared in eight games for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016, and signed defensive backs Dejuan Butler and Tafon Mainsah on Tuesday. Offensive lineman Evan Johnson suffered a lower-body injury in the fourth quarter against the Stampeders, but is expected to recover in time to play on Friday.

                  EXTRA POINTS

                  1. BC has lost seven of its last eight road games.

                  2. Redblacks WR Greg Ellingson has caught at least one pass in 31 consecutive games.

                  3. Lions short-yardage QB Cody Fajardo has rushed for a touchdown in three straight games.

                  PREDICTION: Redblacks 27, Lions 23

                              Friday's Diamond Notes
                              Kevin Rogers

                              Hottest team:
                              Rockies (8-2 last 10)

The only division in baseball that showcases four teams with at least 50 wins at the All-Star break is the National League West. Arizona and Colorado hook up at Chase Field for a weekend set after the Rockies won the final five contests of a six-game homestand. Following a loss to the Diamondbacks in the opener, the Rockies captured the last two games, including a 19-2 blowout in Game 2 of that set. Colorado swept Seattle to finish 5-1 on the season against the Mariners, while owning a 5-2 mark in its past seven road contests.

In Friday’s opener, right-hander German Marquez will look to keep Colorado’s win streak alive. Marquez owns a 3-0 record in his last three starts, including an easy victory in that 17-run blowout of Arizona last Wednesday. The Rockies have won six of Marquez’s nine road assignments this season, including a victory at Chase Field as a +130 underdog on March 31.

                              Coldest team:
                              Brewers (0-6 last six)

It’s a bitter taste in the mouths of the Brewers, who finished a promising first half with a thud. Milwaukee put together a successful 6-1 homestand to start July, but lost two of three at Miami, followed by getting swept in a rare five-game series at Pittsburgh. In the finale of the Pirates’ series, the Brewers squandered a late three-run lead in an extra-innings setback as Milwaukee has dropped into second place of the NL Central behind surging Chicago.

The task doesn’t get easier for the Brew Crew, who welcome in another hot squad in the Dodgers to Miller Park this weekend. Manny Machado is set to make his Dodgers’ debut after getting acquired by the Orioles on Thursday and he will help lead a lineup against Milwaukee southpaw Wade Miley. In three starts this season, the Brewers are 2-1 with Miley on the bump, while coming off a loss at Pittsburgh last Thursday in his previous outing.

                              Hottest pitcher:
Dallas Keuchel, Astros (7-8, 3.75 ERA)

Three seasons removed from claiming the AL Cy Young award, Keuchel owns a 30-25 record since 2016. Following a rocky start to this season, Keuchel is returning to ace form by winning three consecutive starts. Even though those victories came against below .500 squads in the White Sox, Rangers, and Tigers, Keuchel has allowed three earned runs in the last 19 innings of work, while Houston has compiled a 6-1 mark in his past seven starts. Keuchel will be tested by a tough Angels’ club on Friday in Anaheim, as he has not faced L.A. this season, but Houston won both his starts against the Halos in 2017.

                              Coldest pitcher:
Clayton Richard, Padres (7-8, 4.43 ERA)

San Diego won five consecutive starts made by the left-hander from late May through June. However, the Padres have dropped three of Richard’s last four starts, while allowing 15 runs in the past 24 innings of work. Richard had the unfortunate task of taking the mound for six consecutive road starts prior to a no-decision in a home defeat to the Cubs last weekend. The good news for Richard is the Padres won both of his starts against the Phillies last season, including a complete-game shutout at Petco Park last August.

                              Biggest OVER run:
                              Reds (8-0 last eight)

Cincinnati returns home for the first time since July 4 as the Reds are coming off eight consecutive OVERS to finish off a nine-game road swing. Cincinnati’s offense continues to put up strong numbers since June as the Reds have scored four runs or more in 13 of the past 14 games. The Reds welcome in the rival Pirates on Friday as right-hander Tyler Mahle looks to bounce back after getting tagged for seven runs in 2.1 innings of a 19-4 drubbing at Cleveland last Wednesday.

                              Biggest UNDER run:
                              Diamondbacks (6-1 last seven)

Arizona’s offense busted out for a 20-run performance against San Diego on July 7. In the last seven games combined, the D-backs have plated a total of 17 runs, including only six runs in a series victory at Atlanta prior to the All-Star break. The D-backs received a pair of terrific pitching performances in the first two wins over the Braves behind the Zack G connection of Zack Godley and Zack Greinke as they limited Atlanta to one run. Arizona has lost three consecutive home openers, while scoring three runs or less in each of those contests as the D-backs host the Rockies.

Matchup to watch: Giants vs. Athletics

The Bay Bridge Series continues in the East Bay after Oakland captured two of the first three matchups at San Francisco prior to the All-Star break. After getting blown out in the opener, 7-1, the A’s outscored the Giants, 10-5 in the final two games to close the first half with an incredible 15-4 record in their last 19 contests.

With the venue shifting to the Oakland Coliseum, rookie right-hander Dereck Rodriguez tries to stay on fire for San Francisco. Rodriguez is unbeaten in his last five starts, while tossing three scoreless innings in a 5-4 extra-innings triumph over the Cubs on July 11. Rodriguez is making his first start since July 6, as he has allowed three earned runs in his last three starts (20 innings pitched).

Edwin Jackson is pitching for his 14th team in his 16th season as the veteran right-hander was on the losing end of a 7-1 defeat to Madison Bumgarner and the Giants last Friday night. Jackson wasn’t bad as he yielded two earned runs for the third straight start, but the offense couldn’t get going against Bumgarner. The A’s look to improve on a 6-1 record in their past seven home contests, while splitting a pair of home matchups with the Giants last season.

                              Betcha didn’t know:
The Yankees have grabbed six of the last seven matchups with the Mets in the “Subway Series” since the start of 2017. Granted, the Bronx Bombers didn’t face Noah Syndergaard in any of those games, as the Mets’ right-hander heads to the mound on Friday night at Yankee Stadium. Syndergaard hasn’t seen the Yankees since a 5-0 home loss in 2015, while “Thor” last won as a road underdog in 2016 against the Cubs.

                              Biggest public favorite:
                              Mariners (-205) vs. White Sox

                              Biggest public underdog:
                              Angels (+115) vs. Astros

                              Biggest line move:
Indians (-175 to -190) at Rangers

                                Cards-Cubs Kick Off 2nd Half

The Chicago Cubs host the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night at Wrigley Field and it's the only game in town. There are some amazing total trends for bettors to pay attention to, however. The 'over' is 5-1 in the past six games for the Cardinals, and 4-0 in their past four inside the National League Central Division. In addition, the over is 4-0 in the past four against right-handed starting pitchers, while going 5-1 in the past six for Carlos Martinez. The over has cashed in five of Martinez's past seven road outings against a team with a winning record, too, while going 13-3-1 in his past 17 overall against teams with a winning mark. The over is also 5-0-1 in the past six starts by Martinez against the Cubbies. The wind will also be blowing out to left field at 10-13 mph, making it more difficult for the pitchers to keep the ball in the yard.

As far as the Cubs are concerned, the over has been good for them lately, too. The over is 4-0 in their past four games overall, while going 4-0 in their past four against right-handed starting pitchers. The total has also gone over in five of their past six against NL Central foes, too. If the game goes over, though, it will be against the trends as far as Kyle Hendricks is concerned. The under has hit in 12 of his past 15 starts against NL Central opponents, while going 19-8 in his past 27 starts overall. The under is 22-4-1 in his past 27 home outings against a team with a winning overall record, and 15-3 in his past 18 while working on four days of rest, too. At Wrigley Field, the under is 37-16-1 in Hendricks' past 54 home assignments.

                                Friday, July 20

The under has cashed in four straight starts for Anibal Sanchez of the Braves, while going 4-1 in Atlanta's past five games overall. The under is also 6-1 in their past seven against NL East foes. However, the over is 4-1 in their past five on the road against right-handed starting pitchers, and 15-5 in their past 20 games on the road. For Washington, the under is 5-2 in the past seven overall, while going 4-1 in their past five against winning teams and 7-1 in their past eight at home against teams with a winning road mark. However, the over is 40-19-3 in the past 62 home outings for Strasburg, while going 4-0 in his past four starts in Game 1 of a new series. The over is also 5-1 in the past six home starts by Strasburg against the Braves. The head-to-head trends show the under is 4-0 in the past four meetings in D.C., and 8-1-2 in the past 11 meetings overall. However, winds will also play a factor (see below).

The Twins and Royals battle each other in K.C., and the over is the overwhelming trend. The over has hit in five of the past six for the Twins, while going 4-1 in their past five against left-handed starting pitchers. The over is also 6-2 in Minnesota's past eight following an off day, while going 11-4 in Kyle Gibson's past 15 in Game 1 of a new series. However, the under is 13-4-1 in the past 18 road starts by Gibson, and 5-1-1 in his past seven on the road against teams with a losing record. For the Royals, the over is 4-1 in the past five overall, 5-1 in the past six home games. The over is also 4-1 in their past five against the AL Central, and 4-1 in their past five vs. RHP. The over has also connected in four of the past five home outings for Danny Duffy. The over has connected in 10 of the past 14 meetings in Kansas City, and 5-2 in the past sevne meetings overall. The over is also 5-2-1 in the past eight starts by Gibson against the Royals, while the under is 7-1 in Duffy's past eight home outings against the Twins.

                                Other Total Trends

The under is 8-2 in the past 10 interleague games for the Mets, while going 8-2 in their past 10 vs. AL East opponents. The under is 5-1-1 in Noah Syndergaard's past seven starts, too, while going 15-4-2 in his past 21 against teams with a winning record. The under is 5-0 in the past five at home for the Yankees against teams with a losing road mark, and 12-1 in their past 13 interleague games. The under is 11-4-1 in the past 16 home games for the Bronx Bombers, and 27-10-2 in their past 39 overall. The under has also hit in four of the past five in the Subway Series.

The under is 5-2 in the past seven meetings between the Marlins and Rays. While the over is 9-2 in Miami's past 11 road outings, the under is 5-0 in Dan Straily's past five road assignments against a team with a winning mark. The under is also 6-1-1 in Tampa's past eight at home, and 21-9-1 in the past 31 overall.

The over is 13-2-1 in the past 16 games for the White Sox on Fridays. The over is also 9-3 in their past 12 on the road. However, the under is 11-4-1 in the past 16 starts by James Shields, and 6-1-1 in the past eight home outings by Wade LeBlanc.

The Bay Bridge Series between the Giants and A's has seen the over go 10-2-2 in the past 14 meetings overall, including 7-0-1 in the past eight in Oakland.

                                Betting On The Wind

In the matinee battle between the Cards and Cubs, the wind is forecast to be blowing out to left field from 11-14 mph. That will aid in the 'over' as long as the thunderstorms hold off.

The Braves and Nationals will be dealing with 10-13 mph winds blowing out to left field, as Home Run Derby champion Bryce Harper looks to kick off the second half on a high note.

In Cincinnati and Detroit, the winds will be blowing in to help the pitchers. The Red Sox-Tigers will be battling 14-17 mph winds blowing in from straightaway center field to home plate. The winds will be humming from right field to home plate for the Bucs-Reds at a 10-13 mph clip. Both cities face a 40-50 percent chance of rain, so a delay or postponement is possible.

The Indians and Reds won't be dealing with precipitation, but sweltering heat and winds. The gametime temp at Globe Life Park is forecast to be 107 degrees, 'cooling' off to 101 by 9pm CDT. The winds will be howling from right field to home plate at 11-14 mph.

Lastly, the winds will be helping batters for the Giants and Athletics, blowing out to right field from 13-16 mph.
