It's been well-documented how the Patriots struggle against mobile QBs. Dallas' Dak Prescott definitely fits that category and is playing at an MVP-type level as far as passing goes. I worry about the Cowboys' defense in this game, but not enough to think they can't cover the spread against New England.

The blame for every Eagles loss always falls at the feet of others and not QB Carson Wentz. In all honesty, he has to play better - especially against the NFL's stronger teams. Wentz has another opportunity to do so this week. But with the Seahawks coming off a bye and possessing an MVP candidate in QB Russell Wilson, I don't think Wentz - or the Eagles - can get the job done.

The Raiders find themselves in the thick of the AFC playoff race and face a New York team that has won back-to-back games. Oakland wasn't as crisp last week against Cincinnati in what I think was its wake-up call. The Jets have begun to play much better, but the Raiders are a step up in class, so this will be an uphill climb for them.

Coming off of a bye week, the Giants hope for a better effort from their defense. While the Bears do have offensive weapons on the perimeter, their QB situation is in shambles. What keeps me from trusting New York in this matchup is rookie QB Daniel Jones' propensity to turn over the ball. And he will be facing one of the better defenses in the NFL in Chicago.

My model says that the 49ers cover the spread 58 percent of the time, so you're getting good value playing San Francisco at this point spread. The 49ers rebounded from their first loss of the season to post their sixth double-digit victory of the year last week. Green Bay also bounced back from a defeat, but QB Aaron Rodgers will be facing the NFL's top-ranked pass defense in this one. Take San Francisco.

While teams playing a road game after a bye has been a strong trend, I think we have to go with the 49ers here. They've been the better all-around team this year, ranking seventh in points per drive on offense and second on the other side of the ball. The Packers' defense has been hit or miss despite the team's record and, in particular, has struggled to defend the run. That's how the 49ers stacked wins early in the season, and I expect them to return to that strategy in this matchup. That will help alleviate injury concerns in the passing game as well, and if the 49ers' talented D-line does its job, the home team should win.

Analysis:
The Patriots are 60.1% ATS since 2003, which is a more then 300 game sample size. They have accomplished this remarkable ATS record despite seemingly having negative value every single week. This week, for one rare time, I have value on New England. I make this game Patriots -8.


The Patriots were just laying 4.5 on the road to a Eagles team that is slightly inferior to the Cowboys, yet are now only laying 6 at ho—me to Dallas. Recently, the best role the Patriots have had is competitive spreads in home games. In "competitive spread games", which I classified as the spread being seven points or less, the Patriots are a remarkable 23-6-1 ATS in their last 30 games. They are 8-1 in their last 9 games when laying a touchdown or less.


The Patriots have the fifth best defense in DVOA since 1985. Amari Cooper is playing at less then 100%. The Cowboys have played four above average teams this season in my rankings, losing three of them to the Vikings, Saints, and Packers. You will hear a lot about the Patriots offensive struggles recently, but those were on the road against an elite Ravens defense and improving Eagles defense. The Cowboys defense has let up above expectation games recently to Aaron Rodgers, Sam Darnold, Kirk Cousins, and Jeff Driskel. This is not a unit to fear. Plus, they are one of the worst defenses in the league at giving up passes to running backs, specifically against screens, which is a strength of the Patriots offense.


The coaching edge is huge in this game, with a rookie play caller on offense and Jason Garrett going against Belichick. The Patriots have won 21 straight home games, winning 19 of them by 6 points or more.
