Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Tonight, Woodbine Mohawk Park has an 11-race card set to go. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8 and that sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 8

5-On The Ropes (4-1)-This is the lowest level in a quite a while and draws well. Comes right back to race and Drury has options. Should be put in play early on and this is a good spot for an overdue picture.
8-Steuben Hanover (3-1)-Blais trainee comes off a brutal trip in the Hambo Maturity and now faces a much easier task. McClure returns and he knows how to get this 4-year-old into striking range. Looks like a player with a smooth journey.

Race 9

2-Happy Looker (9/2)-Was bet down last week like the race was already won and faltered down the stretch. Fits here and could make the most of starting inside of main foes.
4-Whiskey To Wine (7/2)-It looked like Jamieson was sitting behind the winner, but he was locked in down the lane. This will be the 3rd start for the Pereira barn and fits well with this crew. Looking for a more aggressive steer and a better finish.
8-Sound Idea (3-1)-Has been facing better and was stuck with the 9-hole in 2 of last 3 starts. Does need the right trip from this post but can snag 2nd lifetime win if within striking range at the top of the lane.

Race 10

5-Grandma Heidi (5/2)-Drops and should like the company. McNnair blasted out last week but the quick fractions took its toll. Could use the same plan except the pilot will try to make sure her tank isn't drained too quickly.
6-Refi (9/2)-Bumps up and missed a week but it's hard to dismiss. Baillargeon barn has been red-hot all year and this 4-year-old has hit the board in all 14 starts in 2020 with 4 wins. The week off may help and should offer a fair price.
8-Mass Fortune K (4-1)-Auciello trainee comes out of the same race as #5 and gets some needed class relief. JMac has some options, has the gate speed to get a good seat and be in the hunt throughout.

Race 11

5-Trix And Stones (5/2)-Dropped to this level last week, got jammed up and led to a DQ, so had an excuse plus missed a start. Tonight, should be different, draws better and comes right back so Jamieson should provide a confident drive.
7-Sortie (5-1)-Drops to a soft spot, will toss last versus better and that start was after being idle 3 weeks. Has won 4 of 24 at Wbsb and should be a player if minds manners. The post draw shouldn't be a big issue and can roll by off cover.

Finger Lakes - Race #1

#1 Doyle the Warrior	Major player goes off the layoff for a Barrow barn that has started the meet on a hot streak, catches a soft field, and at 4-for-10 she wants to beat you; look out.
#5 Sweet Shallots	Class dropper was in too tough when last seen in Nov. but the win two-back against similar to what she meets here was strong, and she'll be a price too; worth a look.
#4 Tousled	ML favorite is also the speed, but there's a bit in here, so she may not clear, and this is a rise in class off those three straight wins to end last year; comes unglued late.
Race Summary	That 2-1 ML seems mighty juicy on the pick, as not only is she the best horse here, but she goes for a barn that's firing early at the meet, so play her aggressively to win and place, while getting some added value by singling her to kick off the early Pk4, as she looks primed to start her year with a race the rest of these simply won't be able to handle.

Finger Lakes - Race #3

#5 Lightning Jack	Rice firster goes for only an 8% debut barn, and the fact this one is here and not on the bigger NYRA circuit says he's not all that much, but main man Gomez rides (a whopping 38% riding for Rice), there's a slew of works on display, and he sure doesn't meet much to be scared of; call at first asking.
#3 Blessed Honour	Lifetime maiden is 0-for-30 but is priced at 2-1 on the ML, which about says it all here, and he does have an edge on paper, and is the class off all those NYRA races too, not to mention he has a recency edge too, but yikes, taking short prices on these types will get you to the poor house; second-best.
#6 Theresa's Boy	ML favorite has several races that would beat a group like this but he's 0-for-28 himself, so there's that huge negative, not to mention he hasn't been out since November either, so the extended layoff is a real concern, as is the underlaid price in lieu of all those losses; using underneath, as always.
Race Summary	Tab the tote on the 5, as he almost has to be live and taking money for these connections against this type of crew, and play him accordingly to win and place if the money shows, and especially in the early Pk4 as well, since his main main protagonists are a combined 0-for-58, which means he's got a great chance to better their win total in his first career start.

Finger Lakes - Race #5

#3 Open Book	Speedster was a huge price at the level eight days ago but didn't run poorly when dueling early and tiring late to be a relatively close 5th, should only be tighter off that, and looks to have a decided tactical edge on a field without a lot of early zip on paper, all at what figures to be a very nice price as well; come and catch the upset special.
#5 Magic Roy	Deserving chalk was comfortably ahead of the pick when 2nd last week, and he did it from a nightmare draw and nightmare start, as he broke last-of-12 from the far outside slot, so that was a huge run, which means he could regress here, as it was a taxing one too, all at what will be a minuscule price on the toteboard as well; backwheel time.
#2 Dial One	Tricky read hasn't been out in 17 months and was on the Poly when last seen for Jordan, and now he's on the dirt for Acquilano, so what you get here is a real guess, but Davila rides, and this is a barn that is a stiff 31% with its newcomers, and 23% off extended layoffs, though this 5-2 ML would be way too short to find out; mixed signals here.
Race Summary	The price will be right and then some on the 3, and you do have to have some imagination to land on him, but the risk-reward is there, and he seems to own a race flow edge too, so give him a look in all the slots, and in the Pk5, and to kick off the late Pk4 as well, as a win would go a long way to blowing up both sequences, and it's not as impossible as his win odds might indicate.

Mountaineer - Race #1

#5 Midnight Leap	Moved forward in that second start off the bench when second at 18-1, and though the price will get shorter today, a repeat of that keeps her right in the mix with these.
#2 Baronet	Drops in class after a distant runner-up effort when rained over to the dirt, and she'll need to turn the tables on the one listed above who beat her back in June.
#6 Shes a True Beauty	Has spent most of her time with much better than this, and while she owns some back form that would make her very tough here, she's probably overbet off the layoff.
Race Summary	Midnight Leap's last fits very well here, and the 3-1 ML favorite has been tailing off for some time and now must fire off the bench.

Mountaineer - Race #2

#9 Lovely J T	Has some early speed and a little bit of turf on the bottom side of the pedigree, so she has at least some chance to improve at a price on the surface switch.
#6 Hell's a Poppin	Tactical type should be right up on the early splits again in this one, and while she's probably the one to beat, she doesn't have to win this.
#7 Matzo Bella	Has run fairly well on the grass in the past with some better groups, and she might get a decent kind of tracking trip while moving back to the grass.
Race Summary	Lovely J T is typically all or nothing, but there isn't a ton of other speed in this spot, and if he handles the turf, he might be able to get brave at a nice number.

Mountaineer - Race #3

#2 Bret's at Caddies	This guys is 13-for-22 in the Exacta on the grass in his career, and he should be able to get a really nice trip from just off the splits. Can win right back.
#3 Greg Rules Da	Almost had this guy on top, as he'll get a good run of things here and may hang around for a piece underneath.
#9 Shacklefords Storm	Most likely winner has good back turf form and a couple of blowout local wins, but this is a tougher spot and he's sure to get bet.
Race Summary	Bret's at Caddies won a slow main track race last out, and he brings back turf form that can make him tough with these at a fair price.
