Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Late Pick 5 Analysis

    August 3, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
Tonight, Woodbine Mohawk Park has 11-races set to go with the 0.20 Late Pick 5 starting in Race 6. The sequence has a 15% takeout and will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6

2-Big Rich (2-1)-Was used hard off the gate from the 7-hole in last, did get on the engine but lost the race by a head. Should be tighter tonight, was off 3-weeks before that start and this is a very soft spot. Should have no excuse.
8-Perfetto (9/2)-Comes off an impressive win and now bumps up but still fits. Has the gate speed to get a close-up seat and has beaten better than this in the past. Has won 10 of 34 here and will use at a square price as #2 can be camera shy.

    Race 7

2-Lefkada (8-1)-Has hit the board in 11 of 18 starts at Wbsb and should be nice price. Does show 2 breaks in the last 7 months, both at Grand River so will toss last. Last win here came on 12/20 and that was with Roy, who is back tonight.
4-HP Bruxelles (5/2)-Filion returns to take the lines and that should help. Not sure if simply got tired in the last few yards or the driver wasn't alert but lost a very tight photo. Program chalk is in a nice spot to make amends.

    Race 8

1-Cheapskate Hanover (8-1)-Price shot picked up a check in 1st race back after the restart and paced the back half in 54.4. Team Cullen trainee can make some noise here. Does like to win, 20 of 93 lifetime and has won 8 of 27 at Mohawk.
2-Jaydens Place (8-1)-Another who can put some juice in the Pick 5 payout. Does get a ++ driver change with McNair back aboard. Should be put in play from the start and could surprise with a nice move down the lane.
6-Ocenaview Magnum (3-1)-Comes off a win versus Preferred company at GeoD and fits well with this field. Roy drives for Moreau, an encore could be in the cards.
7-Julerica (8/5)-Scorched the field from the 8-hole at this class last week and went off a 1/2. Was claimed in last and Filion will be between the pipes as 8-year-old looks for 3rd straight picture. Will respect but will look to others for more value.

    Race 9

3-Dunbar Hall (7/2)-Drops again after fading down the lane after a difficult journey. Best to respect in this spot, could be tighter and better. Was off 3 weeks before last start and comes back within a week this time.
6-Buzz (4-1)-Drops to a spot to shine. Drury is back, he can put on the engine and Buzz knows how to win there. Not really any gate speed inside and comes back to race within a week. Could be sitting on a big try.

    Race 10

1-White Tiger (8-1)-JMac is out injured, maybe Filion will get the steer? Drops to good spot in 3rd start off the break after starting slowly in previous 2 races. This could be go time and may look to race on the engine or the 2-hole.
4-Treasured Tee (5/2)-Moreau trainee is still the morning line favorite despite coming off a sick scratch and not racing since 6/29. Has only raced 20 times the past 2 years, but has a big shot if fires hot off the bench.
5-Mister Magic (4-1)-Last 4 lines are a win, a break, a win, a break and that sequence can hold true if minds manners. Kadabra 5-year-old knows how to win going 15 of 44 past 2 years and has won 16 of 55 for 29% at Wbsb.

    0.20 Late Pick 5

      Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

      Finger Lakes - Race #1
#2 Forecaster Class riser looked good winning off the break last time, and while this group is a bit tougher, he owns a big recency edge; call right back.
#1 Lumberer Heavy favorite hasn't been out since October and could need this, not to mention the rail offers no value at shorts odds; backwheel time.
#5 Rollo Lothbrok Heavy hitter is another off the break, and this one has no early speed either, so he may be left with too much to do late; runs out of room.
Race Summary You'll get fair value on the 2, and you can't discount the edge he has by having an out this year, while the 1 and 5 enter off long breaks, so play him to win and place, and especially to kick off the early Pk4 as well, since he seems to get all the best of it here.
      Finger Lakes - Race #5
#4 Amers Bel invader was a middling 4th to better open 10k claimers last time, has an important recency edge on the favorite, and goes for a Jeff Englehart barn that wins races in droves in these parts, love her chances here.
#1 Trouble for Skylar Aqu runner meets much easier for Rice and Gomez, a potent 40% combo here, but she was awful last time, and no goes out of town looking for easier, which says her form may be failing; trying to beat on top.
#2 She's Not Bluffing Capable miss should trip out here and isn't far off the top pair on paper, but she's another who is off an extended break, so she could need this, for a Maver barn that hasn't run a horse all year long; tabbing today.
Race Summary That 3-1 ML seems very fair on the 4, as she is in form, meets a weaker crew than the one she just faced, and meets a pair who could need this off the layoff, so play her aggressively to win and place, while getting some added value by keying her in the Pk5, and late Pk4 as well, since a win over a stiff ML favorite would knock out a lot of tickets.
      Finger Lakes - Race #6
#7 Encryption Key Tricky read would lap this field on his best, but he hasn't been seen since 10/18, so what you get is a guess, but the works whisper ready, this attack post is key too, and new trainer Ferraro is a huge 35% off these extended breaks; look out.
#1 A Maize Zing Rip Stalker should trip out, as there's some speed that will cross over and allow him to settle early, and his return was a sharp 2nd, so if he moves forward, and the pick isn't ready, then he's going to be in a good spot off the turn; the main danger.
#6 Disco Deana Pace player dueled and held for a fast win last time, but the pace looks honest here, and the pick will be on her throughout, not to mention this is a class rise, and he could bounce off what was a very strong local return; comes unglued late.
Race Summary Tab the tote on the 7, as you want to see him live and taking money (you don't want to see this 6-1 ML) to show he's ready, and if that's the case you can play him in all the slots, though you'll get some built-in value by using him in the Pk5, and late Pk4 as well, since he could get overlooked on the break, which means a win in the 3-1 range would add some value to both sequences.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Mountaineer - Race #1
#3 West Coast Temple Has to turn the tables on the chalk in this one, but the price should be right to give her a look with these. It's not saying much, but she's better than ever right now.
#1 Belle Magie Should appreciate the move back to the grass after chasing a blowout winner last time around, and she'll be in line for a great trip from close range.
#7 Celebrated Artist Took a step forward when trying turf for the first time last out, and she should be able to stay in touch early on the move around two turns.
Race Summary West Coast Temple finishing behind Belle Magie on the grass when they recently met, but the former should offer a much better price and isn't out of the question.
        Mountaineer - Race #2
#5 Orbital Deity Even but useful run off the layoff might give her something to build on, and though this is her 14th career start, she doesn't meet a particularly deep group here.
#2 Deep Space The clear one to beat in this spot, just missed last out and finished well in front of the top choice that day. Short price is the most likely winner.
#3 Delicate Christy Races with blinkers today for the first time, and that might allow her to take a step forward that would get her in range of the rest of these at a price. Maybe.
Race Summary Orbital Deity got a useful run under her belt last time out, and if she can step forward off that try, she has a claim on this at a nice number.
        Mountaineer - Race #3
#5 Marcie's Candy Just rolled a lesser group on the main track here, and she's bred to handle the turf. Not sure she's going to offer the 5/1 ML price, but she can be tough here.
#4 Loupacate Has a big claim on the top spot, but she has fallen short in a couple of recent local tries, and she's going to get bet again. Need her on the tickets.
#8 Legendarys First Has run big in both career turf starts, but she beat a small group with a pretty good setup last time out, and she is probably a bit overbet tonight.
Race Summary Marcie's Candy ran the race of her life last out, and while I don't at all expect her to run back to that, she's bred to like the new footing and is a good fit here.

          Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

          Indiana Grand - Race #6
#3 Hidden Ruler Set the pace for a half-mile in a fast allowance at Keeneland and takes a drop here; his best should be good enough against these.
#6 Wild Behavior Was up in time in is second start, which came in November at Cburchill; has worked well and can be a player in his return.
#1 I'm Corfu Has battled for the lead at some point of nearly all his races and has been outrun in the final yards of most; well-timed ride can put him in the mix.
Race Summary Hidden Ruler s extremely fast and has been in vs. outstanding rivals at Oaklawn, Churchill and Keeneland; won from off the pace at Oaklawn and he can adjust to circumstances here.
          Indiana Grand - Race #7
#1 Royal Leige Just missed at Belterra as he uncorked late run and just missed; lightly raced but looked very good in his only turf appearance. Will be a good price.
#3 Intimidation Lacked a huge late run in his last and finished fourth; was in the Jason Servis stable and makes his first for D'Amato. Expect a lot of play and a good effort.
#9 Papajudgy Was dominant on debut and tired in a much tougher spot in his return; has speed and should be able to adapt to grass.
Race Summary Royal Leige will track a fast pace from the inside and can make a strong late run.
          Indiana Grand - Race #8
#3 Sandy's Newsgirl Was pulled up as the heavy favorite last time but had won a state-bred stakes race one race earlier. Is troublesome on the front end and will be the one to catch.
#1 Betcha Was second in her two this year, both under these conditions here; can save ground and could be very difficult to beat.
#9 First Squadron Was second going long and turns back to a sprint; has the speed to get a good position from the outside and could make them pay for a fast pace.
Race Summary Sandy's Newsgirl didn't make the course last time but was a romping stakes winner and Glyshaw would not have her back in if she wasn't ready to return. Worked a good half-mile for this and is the one to beat.

MLB public line movement for August 3
            Patrick Everson

Gerrit Cole leads the Yankees in a Monday night game against the Phillies, who haven't played in a week due to COVID concerns. New York is a heavy -350 favorite at Caesars sportsbooks.

MLB betting odds are on the board and seeing some early action for the Monday slate. The Phillies finally return to the field, though as big road underdogs to the Yankees. There’s also an NL West battle between the Dodgers and the Padres, and it’s a Jacob deGrom Day.

Multiple oddsmakers provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Sunday’s contests. Covers will update this action report with MLB sharp picks vs. public bets and line movement throughout the day.

            MLB line movement

Caesars sportsbooks opened the Yankees hefty -350 favorites with Gerrit Cole on the mound. The Phillies, off for a week due to COVID concerns, are +300 pups with Jake Arrieta starting. Those prices held steady Sunday night for a 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch.

Walker Buehler and the Dodgers opened -130 at Caesars, with the Padres a +120 underdog behind Chris Paddack. By late Sunday night, there was already a modest move toward visiting Los Angeles, with the line at -134/+124 for a 9:10 p.m. ET clash.

And the Mets, with deGrom taking the ball, opened -120 favorites on the road against the Braves (+110). There was no line movement Sunday night for the 7:10 p.m. ET meeting.

MLB picks and predictions for August 3
                        Rohit Ponnaiya

The Dodgers are 5-0 in their last five vs the Padres in San Diego, and lit Chris Paddack for 12 runs (nine earned) and four homers through 14 1/3 innings across three contests last year.

A new week of MLB betting begins on Monday headlined by a west coast battle between the NL World Series favorite Los Angeles Dodgers and the up-and-coming San Diego Padres.

We break down the baseball odds for this game and more as we bring you our best free MLB picks and predictions for August 3.

                        Cleveland Indians vs Cincinnati Reds

The first game of the day is an interleague matchup between Cincinnati and Cleveland. The Tribe haven't been able to hit the broad side of a barn this season, batting .206 and averaging the second-fewest runs per game in the majors at 2.78.

Thankfully for Cleveland fans they have Zach Plesac on the mound. Plesac had a solid rookie season in 2019 pitching to a 3.81 ERA and he started the year off throwing eight innings of shutout ball against the Chicago White Sox.

The Reds will hand the ball to Sonny Gray who had a breakthrough year last season going 11-8 with a 2.87 ERA and a BAA of .196. He's off to a sizzling start this year as well, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out 20 batters across 12 2-3 innings. Back the Under.

                        PREDICTION: Under 8.5 (-120)

                        Oakland Athletics vs Seattle Mariners

Although the A's have struggled at the plate this season, they have more than enough talent in their lineup to snap out of it. At least on paper, the likes of Matt Chapman, Marcus Semien and Matt Olson are far superior to Seattle's lineup.

Oakland's sluggers should have an easier time against Mariners starter Justus Sheffield. He pitched to a 5.50 ERA across 36 innings last year, and give up four earned runs through three innings in his first start this year.

Frankie Montas will take the hill for the A's. Although Montas hasn't been quite as sharp this year as he was last season when he went 9-2 with a 2.63 ERA, he's still a much better option than Sheffield. Take Oakland on the run line.

PREDICTION: Run line Oakland A's (-115)

Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres

Both the Dodgers and Padres have aces on the mound for this contest between two NL West squads that are off to strong starts this season.

LA's Walker Buehler was limited to 56 pitches in his first start of this season he should be able to increase his workload on Monday. Buehler went 14-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 2019, and dominated the Padres going 2-0 against them while allowing just one run and striking out 26 batters in 15 innings.

Chris Paddack had an impressive rookie season last year but he roughed up in two of three starts vs. the Dodgers. Paddack allowed 12 runs (nine earned) and four homers through 14 1/3 innings across all three contests versus LA. With the Dodgers 5-0 against the Padres in the last five meetings in San Diego, back them on the first five innings run line.

PREDICTION: First Five Innings Dodgers -0.5 (-110)

                        Yesterday's MLB record: 1-2
Season MLB betting record: 17-12, +3.55 units
