Al Cimaglia: Scioto Downs Pick 5 Analysis

        August 18, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
Scioto Downs has a 14-race card ready to roll with the first post at 6:15 EST. The 0.50 Pick 5 begins in Race 5, it has a 14% takeout and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 5

2-Winna Winna (9/2)-Bumps up after a nice try at Nfld from the 8-hole. Only 1-15 this year but has won 3 of 16 at ScD and fits with this crew. Should be forwardly placed and is a threat for top honors with a good steer.
7-Sip And a Bite (3-1)-Takes a good drop and has been stuck with post 10 in 2 of the last 3. Beat NW5000L4 on 7/9 and should be in the mix but Sutton needs to find some live cover.

        Race 6

5-Secret Jet (9/2)-Only 1-17 at ScD and this is a field with many who are camera shy, but does pass foes down the lane. Should offer a square price and could be a threat if Presley can provide a good steer.
6-Humps Peter (2-1)-Starts with a nose on the gate after last two from the 2nd tier. Comes off a nice win to break maiden and upswing may continue after a confidence booster. Not excited about the short price and needs to mind manners.

        Race 7

2-Fools Desire (6/5)-Hoosier shipper has won 6 of 32 at ScD and drops into a soft spot. Noble will want the top and if not pushed there isn't any excuse. Having enough speed isn't a concern but it may come down to catching a breather and being able to seal the deal.
3-Town Icon (7/2)-Should be sitting in the pocket behind the program chalk and will use in case #2 doesn't have his fast ball.

        Race 8

1-Mj'slibertyvalance (5/2)-Has been competitive but only 2 wins in 23 starts. It's hard to leave off the ticket but Barker needs to provide a sharp drive. Has had the rail in 2 of last 3 starts and doesn't get the top, but now faces a field without a standout.
5-Uncle Joe (3-1)-Has the gate speed to get the top. The issue has been fading in the lane. Hasn't won here (0-10) but is another who should like the company.
7-Greek Legend (7-1)-Has faced some tough foes and does have the gate speed to get a good seat. Kaufman is back and he knows well. Well worth a swing at this price and race could set-up well for this 3-year-old.

        Race 9

2-Swapportunity (5-1)-Drops to the lowest level since the restart and this could be a wakeup call. Should be out and winging and 10-time winner from 2019 could take its 2nd picture in 14 starts this year.
6-Volley Ball Beach (5/2)-Drops after flying off the gate and blazing the opening half in 53.3. Makes 3rd start for the Morgan barn and Noble takes a seat. This is another who should like the company.
9-Winwood Mac (15-1)-7-year-old has hit the board in 23 of 45 starts at ScD with 8 wins. Sutton is back and that shouldn't hurt. The pace could be quick and with live cover Mac will be rolling late at a nice price.

        0.50 Pick 5

        2,7,/5,6/2,3/1,5,7/2,6,9
        Total Bet=$36

          Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

          Finger Lakes - Race #2
#1 Carlson City Lightly raced runner sure doesn't meet much, got the prep out of the way in his return from a November break, in an MSW no less, and now adds Lasix on the drop; thinking he's very live.
#4 Gatto Marrone ML favorite will get bet hard since he's been running on the NYRA circuit for Breen, but all three were dismal on the turf, and new trainer Barrow is 0-for-7 going turf-to-dirt; trying to beat.
#6 Price Hero Newcomer is another who has been running on the big circuit, but he's 0-for-9 with no upside, and will be overbet too, and new trainer Bireta is just 1-for-22 on the year as well; tread lightly.
Race Summary You don't have to think too hard that this was the spot they had in mind all along with the 1, who got the perfect prep, has plenty of upside off just two starts, and meets a pair of ML favorites who are just impossible to trust, so play him in all the slots, and especially to kick off the early Pk4, as he's very likely to deliver a lifetime best today, and that would give him a huge show against a crew like this.
          Finger Lakes - Race #5
#7 So Noted Deserving ML favorite improved second-off the long break, now makes the third start of ihs form cycle, drew the perfect attack post for his pressing style, and would win this in a canter if he only repeats the 2nd last time; imposing.
#4 Tchaikovsky Longshot is one of just a few in here who can lag back and pass some in the lane, and there's a lot of speed here, so while his form isn't much and his new trainer hasn't started a horse all year, this could fall apart late; EX bomber.
#6 Magic Roy The perceived main danger based on the ML was a fine 2nd from a terrible post in his return, then possibly bounced last time, but it came at 1-5, and he was dreadful, so the play might be trying to get him out of the EX; not seeing it.
Race Summary You certainly won't get rich on the 7, but if they bet the 6 again maybe that 8-5 ML will hold, so make an aggressive win and place bet if you get 6-5 or better, while using a big price in the EX who will like the race flow (like the 5) though his real value comes in kicking off the Pk5, as you cans single him, which is not a move the betting public likes to make to kick off a horizontal sequence, which means you'll not only get more value than you should, but it will also allow for more coverage in the deeper ensuing legs, as he's got this group over a barrel.
          Finger Lakes - Race #7
#6 Dr. Lloyd Price player didn't break then ran in place in his return, but he was a close 6th, should only build off that, and shows several speedy races last year that would hit hard here; upset special.
#7 Financialstability Newcomer goes off the claim for Baker (a 1-for-9 angle) off an easy N2L win at Sar for Brown, and leaving that barn is dicey, but this isn't much of a rise, and he drew perfectly; huge chance.
#4 Irish Roar ML favorite was close 3rd at the level in his local debut for Jeff Englehart, so clearly he hits hard, but the top-2 seem to have a bit more upside, and this one will be overbet; mixed signals.
Race Summary There's a lot to like about the 6, most notably the price, and the expected improvement he's going to show here, so play him in all the slots, and in the Pk5, and late Pk4 as well, since he could fall through the wagering cracks, which means a win would go a long way in adding plenty of value to both sequences.

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Mountaineer - Race #2
#3 Rhapsodies Sign Forward player seemingly has the pedigree to handle the new footing, and his pace may allow him to try to have a go for it from the break.
#1 Lil Mr Matt Steps up for this one, and I'd want something better than the 4/1 ML offering, but that sort of even run last time out might play well on the lawn.
#4 Deputy Ben Most likely winner will surely get bet, and I'm not sure the risk/reward benefit will be there with form that isn't anything to write home about.
Race Summary Rhapsodies Sign can get a good run of things near the top while trying the turf for the first time, and a slightly softer tempo while running two turns may work in his favor, too.
            Mountaineer - Race #3
#7 J Z's Diva Would be thrilled to have anything like the 8/1 ML price, as this one does excellent work here and might have one more step forward in this third start off the layoff.
#3 Pride of Wilko Tactical type loves it here and comes off a very easy win at this level last time out. Beat her at a short price if you want to score.
#1 Bonita Springs Main worry here is that her rating gear barely exists, and the rail draw is probably going to force her rider's hand to show some pace from the fence.
Race Summary J Z's Diva makes her third start off the layoff, and she may offer a playable price with Pride of Wilko likely to hammered at the windows.
            Mountaineer - Race #7
#3 Perfect Blend Had no chance when almost distanced early in the debut run, but he showed a little bit of late interest behind a runaway winner, missing the Exacta by just a couple lengths. He's in light on the stretchout.
#7 Draw the Line Owns running lines that should be pretty tough here, but he has made six starts and has never seriously threatened a winner. Guessing he'll find one or two of them too tough.
#2 Strugar Southern California import was up the track in a couple of dirt starts, but those came with much better company than he's going to find tonight. Don't think the price is going to be fair.
Race Summary Perfect Blend is worth a longshot look in here while moving around two turns. He finished with a bit of energy when far off the pace in the debut run, and a more leisurely route pace may allow him to sit closer here.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              The Meadows - Race #2
#4 GRAYMATTER HANOVER Figures tough if she stays flat, all or nothing.
#6 BOOM BOOM BAY Running out of chances, slowed by pace in latest.
#1 ANNALIOSI No match for 6-5 winner, has speed and the rail.
Race Summary Graymatter Hanover rallied for second behind the odds-on winner with first-time Lasix and should beat this field if her breaking habit doesn’t resurface. Play 4-1 and 4-6 exactas.
              Yonkers - Race #1
#5 OCTANE BLUE CHIP Gets class relief, projects ideal trip, must use on all tickets.
#1 HEEZ ORL BLACK N Speed, rail, starts fresh for 12yo seasonal debut.
#4 ALBERTO CONTADOR N 46-race winner drops for return, should get needed pace flow.
Race Summary Octane Blue Chip, no fire against better at 52-1, can win with a duplicate of his race two back at Pocono Downs. He was trapped in the third quarter and finished willingly after chasing fast fractions. Play 5-1 and 5-4 exactas.
              Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #3
#8 UPTOWN CALLIE Responded to front-end assignment, controlled pace throughout.
#10 ODDS ON VERO BEACH Inside trip, second after :55.2 back half, post the concern.
#9 HAPPY LOOKER Finished on wrong side of photo finishes in 3 of last 5 starts.
Race Summary Uptown Callie controlled a soft pace against lesser rivals, but shrugged off the pocket sitter with ease. She looks like the value of the race, so play 8-9 and 8-10 exactas.

Well, that is how I feel as I go right back to the well with this afternoon's freebie as I ride Philadelphia and Montreal Under the total once again.

The last pair of games in this best-of-seven series have featured shutouts. Carey Price of Montreal blanked Philly in Game Two, while Carter Hart of Philadelphia returned the favor the other night in Game Three.

That makes 3 games played in this series and 3 Unders in the books.

Philadelphia's Under run now stretches to 9 straight games having landed on the Low side, while Montreal is now Under in each of their last 4. The Canadiens have also held Under in 6 of their previous 7 and 8 of their last 10 overall.

One thing I learned a long time ago about playoff hockey is that when the goalies are hot, they tend to stay hot in a series. Such is the case with these 2 gentlemen behind the masks - Mr. Price and Mr. Hart.

Goals have been hard to come by in this series, they stay hard to come by.

Game Four Under the total just like Games One, Two and Three.

                4* PHILADELPHIA-MONTREAL UNDER
