MLB public betting, line movement for August 18
        Patrick Everson

The Rays are among the hottest teams in baseball right now, winning eight of their last nine. Tampa Bay opened an even-money underdog to the Yankees, then moved to a slight -107 favorite.

MLB betting odds are posted and drawing dollars for Tuesday’s 15-game slate. Noteworthy matchups include the Yankees opening a three-game road set against the AL East rival Rays, and the Cardinals and Cubs in prime time.

Multiple oddsmakers provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Tuesday’s games. Covers will update this action report with MLB sharp picks vs. public bets and line movement throughout the day.

        MLB line movement

The Yankees are on a six-game win streak entering this 7:05 p.m. ET clash, and the Rays are quite hot, too, at 8-1 in their last nine games. Caesars sportsbooks gave a slight edge to Masahiro Tanaka and New York, opening at -110 against Blake Snell and Tampa Bay at even money. However, the first moves were toward Tampa, with the line going to Rays -107/Yankees -103 late Monday night.

St. Louis, continuing to work its way back into form after a lengthy layoff due to COVID issues, split a Monday doubleheader against the Cubs. Chicago is -175 chalk for Tuesday’s 8:15 p.m. ET start, with the Cardinals +160.

Kenta Maeda is 3-0 with a 2.66 ERA in four starts for the Twins, and as such, Caesars opened Minnesota -165 for Tuesday’s 8:10 p.m. ET meeting with the visiting Brewers. Late Monday night, the line ticked to Twins -160/Brewers +150.

        MLB public betting

Despite the Rays’ hot streak and an early moneyline flip, Covers Consensus showed plenty of support for the Yankees, who were landing 66 percent of picks Monday night. The Cubs were drawing 60 percent of early picks against the Cards, and the Twins grabbed 64 percent of early Covers Consensus plays against the Brewers.

NHL public betting, line movement for August 18
                Patrick Everson

Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals are in desperation mode for Tuesday's Game 4, looking to dodge elimination against the Islanders. New York is a -115 favorite and Washington even money.

NHL betting odds are up for Tuesday’s games, with four matchups on the conference quarterfinal docket. The Capitals and Islanders are in the prime-time contest, with third-seeded Washington surprisingly on the verge of being swept out of the NHL playoffs.

Caesars sportsbooks provided insights on NHL opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Tuesday’s contests.

                NHL line movement

The Capitals suffered a 2-1 overtime loss in Game 3 Sunday, putting them on the brink of a first-round ouster, two years after winning the Stanley Cup. Caesars sportsbooks opened New York a slim -110 favorite, with Washington -105, and the line ticked to -115/even money for this 8 p.m. ET matchup.

Like the Islanders, the Golden Knights can secure a conference semifinal spot with a win over the Blackhawks. Vegas couldn’t finish off a sweep Sunday, losing 3-1 in Game 4, but opened a -190 favorite at Caesars for Game 5. Chicago is a +170 underdog for the 10:30 p.m. ET faceoff, and there was no line movement Monday night.

The Flyers and Canadiens open the day in a 3 p.m. ET Game 4 puck drop, with top-seeded Philadelphia holding a 2-1 lead and aiming to create some breathing room against No. 8 Montreal. Caesars opened Flyers -125/Canadiens +110, and there was no movement by late Monday night.

                NHL public betting

Consensus is a good indicator of public play, and on Monday night, it was all Golden Knights. Vegas was landing 75 percent of early picks against the Blackhawks. The Flyers and Islanders were landing 57 and 56 percent of picks, respectively, and the 5:30 p.m. ET Flames-Stars game was the closest to dead two-way, with Calgary taking 52 percent of Consensus picks.

                          # 1A SKIPIN ON ORCHARD 5/1
                          # 6 DR. LLOYD 8/1
                          # 2 TENENCY 4/1
I give my vote to SKIPIN ON ORCHARD here. Should go off at a decent number and has some positive things going for him. The class rating of today's contest is much lower than his last contest. DR. LLOYD - He looks quite good in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint. TENENCY - With Davila getting the mount, watch out for this animal. Davila will almost certainly be able to get this gelding to break out early in this race.

                            Belterra Park - Race #1 - Post: 12:35pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $7,500 Class Rating: 61

                            Rating:

                            #3 ROBOTRON (ML=4/1)

ROBOTRON - Ran in the last race against a higher rated class of horses at Belterra Park. The move to a lower level should suit her well. Look at this mare's PP lines. With each race she keeps getting closer. This mare is in fine form, having run a strong race on August 7th, finishing third.

                            Vulnerable Contenders: #6 QUEEN OF CORONA (ML=2/1), #5 ROSEBUD'S TIGER (ML=3/1), #1 LIL POM POM (ML=5/1),

QUEEN OF CORONA - Hard to keep chasing this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse. Notched a substandard speed rating last out in a $5,000 Claiming race on Aug 6th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that number. ROSEBUD'S TIGER - Doesn't look to have enough positive qualities to warrant the price. LIL POM POM - Finished fourth on August 7th after the very long layoff. Doubtful if there will be any betterment in this contest. Will be tough for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put her on the possibly overvalued contestants list.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - ROBOTRON - Advancing each step of the way, this thoroughbred has recorded significant increases in her speed figures over her last two affairs.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 ROBOTRON is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better

                              Thistledown - Race #2 - Post: 1:20pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,200 Class Rating: 52

                              Rating:

                              #1 LAISSEZ FAIRE (ML=5/2)

LAISSEZ FAIRE - Trainer Skerrett gave this mare a good stiff morning drill. Last one was 2nd fastest of the day. Mare took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 ALL THE BEST (ML=3/1), #5 GOODFRIDAY MORNING (ML=7/2), #3 STONE ZONE (ML=9/2),

ALL THE BEST - This horse doesn't have a champion's attitude. Repeatedly finishes in the place and show hole. Finished second in her most recent race with a mediocre speed fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this field. GOODFRIDAY MORNING - You always believe this horse has a shot to be victorious, but she fails most every time. STONE ZONE - No picnic to play any entrant in a sprint race if she hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last 60 days. This steed hasn't been close at the finish line recently.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #1 LAISSEZ FAIRE to win. Have to have odds of at least 1/1 or better though

                                # 4 QUIET BARBARA 3/1
SILVER SIREN is my choice. Has to be considered against this group displaying respectable figures lately and an average speed rating of 68 under similar conditions. Her earnings per start in turf route contests alone makes you take a look at her. Likely to see a much stronger performance with the drop. QUIET BARBARA - Green has recent return on investment numbers which make this horse a good bet. Has ran admirably in turf route races.
