NBA public betting, line movement, sharp money for August 19
Patrick Everson
Luka Doncic and the Mavericks hope to even up their series against the Clippers in Wednesday's Game 2. Los Angeles is a 6.5-point favorite at The SuperBook at Westgate.
NBA betting odds are on the board for a Wednesday quartet of Game 2s in the NBA playoffs. Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers meet Luka Doncic and the Mavericks, and the Celtics begin an anticipated four-week stretch without Gordon Hayward when they face the 76ers.
The SuperBook at Westgate provided insights on NBA opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Wednesday’s matchups.
NBA line movement
The No. 2 seed Clippers got a stern Game 1 test from the No. 7 Mavericks, but ultimately won and covered 118-110 as 6.5-point favorites Monday. For Game 2, Los Angeles opened -6.5 at The SuperBook on Tuesday morning, and the line dipped to -5.5 for a couple of hours before rebounding to -6.5 for a 9 p.m. ET tipoff.
Meanwhile, Tuesday’s news of Hayward potentially missing a month with an ankle sprain led to an adjustment in the Game 2 line. The SuperBook opened the Celtics -5.5 and moved to -4.5 for a 6:30 p.m. ET start against the 76ers.
“The market moved 1 point on the Hayward news, so we went with it,” SuperBook manager Eric Osterman said.
The Nuggets, who needed overtime to beat the Jazz in Game 1, opened -4 for a 4 p.m. ET Game 2, and that line was steady.
NBA sharp money
Osterman said the moneyline was a popular place for early sharp action on Wednesday’s games. The SuperBook saw wiseguy bets on the 76ers moneyline +200, and that price is now +165, and on the Mavericks moneyline +250, now +240.
NBA public betting
The Consensus, often indicative of where public play is, showed solid two-way action on the Mavs-Clippers tilt. In fact, underdog Dallas had a modest edge, landing 52 percent of picks on Tuesday night. The Celtics were seeing 60 percent of early Covers Consensus picks, and most of those were at -4.5, after the Hayward announcement.
The Jazz-Nuggets contest also had two-way on Covers Consensus, with Denver drawing 53 percent of the picks. And in the first game of the day, a 1:30 p.m. ET Nets-Raptors matchup, 11-point chalk Toronto was taking 62 percent of early Consensus picks.
