MLB public betting, line movement for August 20
      Patrick Everson

Sonny Gray and the Reds head to St. Louis for a four-game series that begins Thursday night. Caesars sportsbooks opened Cincinnati a -139 favorite, with the Cardinals +129.

MLB betting odds are on the board, and Thursday’s 14-game docket is already getting attention from bettors. The Cincinnati Reds are still a couple of games below .500, but they’ve got a couple solid starters, and one of them is on the bump in a series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Caesars sportsbooks provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Thursday’s games.

      MLB line movement

Trevor Bauer (3-0, 0.68 ERA) and the Reds blanked the Royals 5-0 on Wednesday, and Sonny Gray (4-1, 2.05 ERA) takes the ball for Thursday’s 8:15 p.m. ET contest against the host Cardinals, who counter with Adam Wainwright (2-0, 1.64 ERA). Caesars books opened Cincinnati -139/St. Louis +129, and there was no line movement Wednesday night.

Shane Bieber (4-0) brings his 1.30 ERA to the mound when the Cleveland Indians visit the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Indians opened -234 at Caesars books and moved in a tick to -230, with the Pirates +200 for a 7:05 p.m. ET meeting.

And on the West Coast, Clayton Kershaw (2-1, 2.65 ERA) gets the nod for the Los Angeles Dodgers in a road game against the hapless Seattle Mariners. Caesars pegged the Dodgers -240 favorites and went to -244 late Wednesday night, with Seattle +214 for a 7:10 p.m. ET start.

      MLB public betting

Not surprisingly, the Consensus demonstrated plenty of early public support for Kershaw and Bieber. The Dodgers were landing 78 percent of early picks against the Mariners, while the Indians piled up 75 percent of early picks against the Pirates.

But the public apparently isn’t yet sold on Gray or feels Wainwright is more deserving of respect. The Reds were landing just 41 percent of Consensus picks Wednesday night against the Cardinals.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and the Capitals hope to continue their comeback against the Islanders in Wednesday night's Game 5. Caesars installed Washington as a -115 favorite.

NHL betting odds are on the board for a light Thursday slate in Stanley Cup playoffs conference quarterfinal play. The marquee matchup features the Washington Capitals continuing their quest to stay alive against the New York Islanders in a prime-time Game 5.

Caesars sportsbooks provided insights on NHL opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Thursday’s contests.

                NHL line movement

The Capitals put themselves in a 3-0 hole in their best-of-7 series against the Islanders, then found themselves trailing Game 4 2-0 just nine minutes in. But Washington rallied for a 3-2 victory to gain a little hope, and in fact, Caesars books opened the Caps -115 favorites for an 8 p.m. ET puck drop. New York is an even-money underdog.

In the only other Thursday matchup, the Dallas Stars and Calgary Flames fire it up for Game 6. The Stars won the last two games to take a 3-2 series lead and can advance to the conference semifinals with a win in this 10:30 p.m. ET contest. Dallas opened a -125 favorite at Caesars, with Calgary +110, and as with the Islanders-Caps game, there was no line movement Wednesday night.

                NHL public betting

In the Consensus, often indicative of public opinion, both Thursday matchups are getting two-way action. The underdog Islanders are landing 53 percent of early picks against the Capitals, while the favored Stars are drawing 54 percent of picks against the Flames.

Orlando and Milwaukee get back after it for Thursday just 48 hours after the injury-riddled Magic jumped out to a 10-point lead after one quarter of play against the # 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and held on for a rather tidy looking 12-point win in a game that landed Over the total.

Orlando was able to put up 122 points, while Milwaukee was held to 110 points which is well below their near 119 points per game average that led the league in scoring.

Expect a better result from Milwaukee in the point scoring department today and expect this game to also land Over the posted total.

The Magic are now Over the total in 3 of their last 4 games and in 6 of their 9 games contested overall since the return of NBA action.

The Bucks are also now 6-3 Over the total in their 9 games played in Florida.

It is hard for me to imagine the Bucks come out "sluggish" in this game. Look for that offense to get into a better flow and rhythm earlier rather than later.

                        Magic-Bucks Over in Game Two.

Rolling into Thursday on a 15-5 run with complimentary MLB plays.

My free play for Thursday is on the Milwaukee Brewers over the Minnesota Twins, as I like the pitching matchup I see and think the road dog carries the value.

If applicable, please be sure to list Brandon Woodruff over Jose Berrios.

Woodruff is 1-1 with a 3.16 ERA this season, and he rolls into this game after a strange outing his last time out. The right-hander twirled a no-hitter through four innings and after setting down the first batter in the fifth, the next six batters reached safely. He's much better than that, and he'll be out for redemption in this one.

Berrios, meanwhile, is 1-3 with a 5.92 ERA this season, and he still can't seem to find a rhythm on the mound. He's allowed 10 walks in his last three starts, including a season-high four against Kansas City this past Saturday. In three of this five starts he's allowed four or more runs - all earned - while batters are hitting .284 against him this season.

Perspective: the league as a whole is hitting just .241 this season, the lowest since the league hit .237 in 1968.

I'll play the Brewers here, as their offense comes alive and Woodruff pitches a gem.
