If Jacob deGrom is the best pitcher in the world, then daytime deGrom at home against the Marlins might be the most dominant pitcher since Pedro Martinez. deGrom faces the Marlins for his fourth consecutive start, and he’s done exactly what you’d expect in the first three: 27 strikeouts and just three runs allowed across 18.0 innings. He completed seven innings for the first time this season on Wednesday and will look to push as deep into the game as he can to ensure his bullpen needs to do as little work as possible. Miami left-hander Trevor Rogers makes his second big-league start, once again facing the Mets at Citi Field. Rogers didn’t allow a run in his four innings on Tuesday, but he did walk five. The Mets are seeing the ball better after an impatient start to the season and will be sure to work Rogers hard in the early innings to take their chances against the Miami bullpen. The run line may look enticing but the Mets have blown late leads for deGrom twice in a row, so to be safe take the Mets money line.

deGrom has been arguably the top pitcher in the Major Leagues ever since he was called up in 2014. One month ago, most baseball fans probably wouldn’t have expected to see three teams in the American League East four games above .500 at the trade deadline, but that’s exactly what happened. The surging Blue Jays probably won’t catch Tampa Bay in the top spot, but their playoff chances improve by the day as they look for a four-game sweep of the Orioles. The Jays send veteran Chase Anderson to the mound. Anderson has been limited in his previous outings but should be good to go for six innings if he pitches well, leaving the end of the game to the lockdown Jays’ pen. The Orioles start lefty Keegan Akin, who makes his first big-league start after two appearances out of the bullpen. Akin has struck out just one in 3.1 innings to start his career, not yet showing the strikeout numbers he put up in the minors. He may eventually turn into an effective big-leaguer, but he’s not there yet, so put your faith in a veteran like Anderson who’s backed by the exciting Toronto lineup. Take the Jays for the sweep.


Over Under Pick
The Jays have scored five, five, and six runs in the first three games of the series, taking Sunday’s game after another late implosion by the Baltimore bullpen. They don’t have any superstars in their lineup, but it’s solid from top to bottom, enough to give any pitcher making his first career start fits.
