Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Pick 5 Analysis

    September 1, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
Tonight, Yonkers Raceway has a $7,500 guaranteed pool in place for its 0.50 Pick 5. That sequence starts in Race 5 and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 5

2-Western Beachboy (5/2)-This race is a real taffy pull and will take a swing with Brennan on a DiDomenico trainee who makes his 3rd start since a trainer change. Should get a good trip and may enjoy returning to YR. Connections had this 5-year-old racing better in January so will look for similar tonight.
4-Mr Wiggle Pants (2-1)-The entire field has missed time and Pants has been off since 8/7 but has faced better. Harris trainee has hit the board in 4 of 10 YR starts and has two wins. Hasn't been the same since a sick scratch on 7/11. Fits and can take a picture with a return to better form.

    Race 6

1-Windfall Profits (2-1)-Makes YR debut coming off a winning effort at Phl and now steps up. Should be forwardly placed throughout and another picture could be in the cards.
2-Lady Maya (6-1)-Beat $12k claimers on 8/20 and came the back half in 56.1. This is a good step up but there aren't any monsters in this field. Can win at a square price and is 1-1 at Yonkers.
6-Sporty Juliana (9/2)-Will use expecting this filly gets overlooked at the windows and goes off above the morning line. Marohn needs to work a trip but if pace is decent may come off cover and surprise. Faces tougher now but did win here on the engine in 53.1 on 7/27.

    Race 7

1-Orillia Joe (5/2)-Old-timer has won 21% of Yonkers starts and drops to a spot to shine. Should like the company but might be used hard to protect the rail. Will use and look to others for more value.
3-Mach West (8-1)-Made 1st YR start on 8/21 but was off 19 days. Raced from the back and sizzled the 2nd half in 54.2 on 8/21 and could be ready for a more aggressive try here. Loses Stratton to #1 as Marohn takes a seat and that will probably help the price.
6-Abraxas Blues A (7/2)-Seems to be rounding into form and makes 2nd start at this level after dropping. Needs a trip but last start was the best effort since starting up again. Veteran likes the oval and there could be an honest pace which should help chances.

    Race 8

1-Vettel N (8/5)-Drops to a more comfortable spot and has the gate speed to protect the rail. Will likely blast out as Joe B. will look to control the fractions. Will be tough to beat with a top effort.
5-Our Correlli N (2-1)-Like #1, will be making Yonkers debut. 6-year-old has the gate speed to leave hard and get a good seat and then battle the program chalk down the lane.

    Race 9

1-Somebaddude (7/5)-Cruised home by almost 4 lengths versus easier in 1st local race since the restart. Steps-up but has performed well against better than this at YR and should be a big threat tonight.
4-Caviart Reagan (7-1)-Won at this class on 7/24 and will toss last start from the 8 hole. Should like the post relief and it should be noted paced a .54 last half in the 8/20 start. Has the gate speed to be in the pocket behind the morning line choice or on the engine.

    0.50 Pick 5

    2,4/1,2,6/1,3,6/1,5/1,4
    Total Bet=$36

      #3
      Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

      Finger Lakes - Race #3
#4 Oneshotatforever Newcomer was facing tons better on the NYRA circuit, new trainer Buckley is a solid 16% with his newbies, and, aside from the chalk, there's nothing to fear here; look out.
#2 Political Aforementioned chalk will be bet off the board after the 22-length romp, but now faces winners, and they won't be impressed, so regression could be coming; backwheel time.
#3 Engineers Report Underlay has the speed to make the front and the troubled run can be excused last time, but yikes, at 23-1-5-5 you get the idea of where he likes to finish; underneath, as always.
Race Summary That 5-1 ML on the pick seems pretty juicy, especially since the 2 could have a rude wakening on the class rise, so ply him to win and place, and especially in the early Pk4 as well, since budget players will be singling the chalk, and therefore a win by 4 will knock a lot of tickets out.
      Finger Lakes - Race #5
#2 Idaside Price player wired last time, though she almost blew a 5-length late lead, but note that win came off a year layoff, so she was expected and allowed to get tired, but with that behind her she may have a lot more in the tank this time; come and catch the pick.
#3 Sweet Shallots Versatile miss was close to a soft pace last time and just missed by a head, in what was a very strong run, and she can close too, if need be, and the added half-furlong she gets to work with here could all she needs to get there 1st this time; looms mighty large.
#6 Sister Patricia Huge underlay was dreadful behind 'Sweet, and sure, she can improve since that run was off a year layoff, but C. Englehart is as good as they come here, so to see her with such a dud is a real worry, and the price won't be right to string along today; not thanks.
Race Summary The price and potentially the race flow will be right with the 2, who takes an aggressive rise in class, which only is a confident move by Conway, so play her in all the slots, and especially in the Pk5, and to kick off the late Pk4 as well, as she may fall through the wagering cracks, which means a win would add plenty of value to both sequences.
      Finger Lakes - Race #6
#2 Let's Workout Interesting firster comes in off a slew of Sar works for Rodriguez, cost 52k as a son of 15k sire Outwork, and he doesn't run in the toughest 2yo heat of the meet; spotted to score.
#8 Pazzion Jeremiah miss didn't fire at 9-5 on debut at Sar for 50k, but this is likely a class drop, she drew perfectly, and won't ave to run much faster to get her picture taken here; huge chance.
#3 Bourbon Brown Logical contender was a solid 3rd on debut, albeit in slow time, but she closed along the rail, which is impressive for a debuting 2yo, though she needs to run faster today; in the mix.
Race Summary Tab the tote on the 2, as you want to see him live and taking money, and if that's the case you can play him in all the slots, though you can get some built-in value by using him in the Pk5, and late Pk4 as well, since this is a race there for the taking, and the fillies he meets aren't any great shakes either.

        #4
        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Mountaineer - Race #1
#9 Mauk's Tuff Finished with some energy in those Midwestern turf sprints, and she handled the local two-turn trip nicely here last year. Price should be right.
#1 Walkin Princess Will need to hold her form for the new connections, but she's a reliable type that almost always fires and can flash some pace from the inside.
#2 Golden Treasury Versatile type can get the right kind of run near the top, but she seems likely to find one or two of them a bit too good tonight.
Race Summary Mauk's Tuff is probably a bit better going short, but this trip is within her scope off a couple of useful sprint efforts at Ellis and Belterra
        Mountaineer - Race #2
#4 Beautiful B One of the main players in a competitive spot, she loves the local footing and can get a perfect first-jump kind of trip.
#7 Chasing the Kitty Another who figures to be in the early action, she woke up in a hurry when dropped in with claiming company last time out. Dangerous right back.
#2 Yankee Rose Speed only knows how to roll early and try to hold on, but something like her last would make her interesting with these even though she's probably going to face a bit more early heat tonight than she did in that last one.
Race Summary Beautiful B owns a 4-for-7 local record over the turf and has enough tactical pace to stay in the mix early on while tracking the other listed players who figure to settle in near the top.
        Mountaineer - Race #7
#1 Coco Machen Reliable type should be able to work out a trip from the inside , and she doesn't meet much other pace tonight. Price won't be much, but she feels like a logical single.
#7 Team Freedom Capable of big things on her best day, this one's best chance would seem to be tracking the top choice in the early going and trying to press past late.
#5 Tunstall Steps up off a couple of decent tries at Delaware and Colonial, and she has the tactical speed to stay close throughout. Still, think the top pair will be too tough for her.
Race Summary Coco Machen will try to go for it from the fence, and she's probably quick enough to find the front without too much trouble. Thinking she's gong to be very tough to get past here.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Pocono Downs - Race #1
#2 CRITICAL MASS Right set-up, right price for new connections.
#1 DI OGGI Trotted evenly in last pair against better, moves inside.
#4 BROADWAY MOJO Rewarded loyal backers, parlayed pocket trip into a win.
Race Summary Critical Mass rallied past the odds-on favorite to finish third at this level two starts back. He should get able pace flow to launch a contending rally at a good price. Play a 1-2-4 exacta box.
          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
#5 NO ANGEL HERE Steady check-getter, clear third behind the faves in latest.
#4 PROFOUND DRAGON Three sire stakes wins since July at different tracks.
#9 PROTOSTAR Out-kicked by deep closing, 24-1 shot through one minute back half.
Race Summary No Angel Here followed a pair of sub 2-to-1 favorites and settled for third in a split race that timed 1-1/5 seconds faster. She should retain betting value, so play 5-4 and 5-9 exactas.
          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #3
#6 BROOKLETSJUSTIFIED Could spring mild surprise with well-timed move in slower paced race.
#9 E L WILD SPIRIT Sustained rally to beat several of same rivals for his 28th win, enters new barn.
#5 DUSTYLANEWESTY Drops, starts fresh, gets Gingras, price attached.
Race Summary Brookletsjustified raced close-up from an inner post but sustained the middle move he made to lead at the stretch call. The same type of move into a projected softer pace could lead to the winner’s circle.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Indiana Grand - Race #4
#4 Neighborly Improved in his second start as he was runner-up; trainer wins his share and this one looks like he's sitting on a victory.
#5 Harbor Court Has two races to his credit and was a factor in each, finishing third and second; he shipped to Colonial for a second on turf and should be very tough as he runs back on the Indiana Grand main track.
#8 Shotgun Joe Made a move to second in the stretch and then hung in the final yards to finish third; eligible to improve.
Race Summary Neighborly improved with distance and experience in his second start and has what it takes to graduate from the maiden level.
            Indiana Grand - Race #7
#2 Gift Wrapped Had a pair of seconds and a third in his last three and has done very well over the local turf; can run them down.
#3 Delicious Pursuit Breezed home in his last two, which came a Belterra and Arlington; troublesome on the front end.
#4 Magine Whistled in her last one at Churchill Downs and makes her first try on the turf; classy enough to be a factor.
Race Summary Gift Wrapped is a decent stalker and can make a late run in this spot; overdue to get back to the winner's circle, which she last saw about a year ago.
            Indiana Grand - Race #8
#5 Rainy Day Dreamin Ran longer in his last two, returns to a sprint and will be set up by a fast pace.
#2 Son of Batman Was an easy maiden winner last time and has been a solid player in his last four; tough if he runs back to his latest.
#11 Colonel Hubert Has enough speed to secure a good spot from the outside and will provide company on the front end.
Race Summary Rainy Day Dreamin will be far back from a speed battle and after coming out of mile races can tune it up late.

                  Mitchell Newman

My Tuesday free play will be the same free play I gave you on Sunday - a winner by the way! - on Boston and Toronto to hold Under the posted total once again.

The Raptors could not reach 100 points in their Game One loss, as they trailed the whole game and the game held Under the total. That makes it 3 of their last 4 this postseason Under the total for Nick Nurse's club and it also puts the Raptors on an overall Under run of 9 of 13 since arriving in Orlando. That 9-4 run does include one regular season meeting with Boston just before the playoffs started.

The Celtics are on an even more pronounced Under run, as they have played each of their last 3 and 6 of their last 7 overall Under the total. If we include the regular season August meeting in Orlando against the Raptors that landed Under it is a 7-2 Under run now for Brad Stevens' team their last 9 times on the hardwood.

Series numbers show 4 of the past 6 meetings between these Eastern Conference rivals having held Under the total.

Until I see Toronto actually figure out how to score against Boston, I will look at the Under as being the way to go.

                  Celtics-Raptors Under the total.

                  3* BOSTON-TORONTO UNDER

                    Bob Valentino

My comp play for Tuesday comes with the tried-and-true and that is to continue to play the Philadelphia Flyers Under the posted total.

Philly just cannot score. Just 7 total goals in the 4 games played in this series and 4 of the goals came in their lone win back in Game Two!

The Under is 2-1-1 in this series so far, but a look at the Flyers overall Over/Under numbers shows Philadelphia on a 6-2-2 Under run this postseason and an overall run of 12-2-2 Under the total for their past 16 skates.

The Islanders happen to be on a 4-1-2 playoff Under run as they head into this potential series-clinching game and aside from that Game Two loss in which they allowed the 4 goals to the Flyers, the Isles have allowed just 11 goals to score in their 8 other playoff affairs.

Expect the goals to continue to be hard to come by again for the Flyers tonight.

Under we go in Game Five between the Flyers and the Islanders.

                    5* N.Y. ISLANDERS-PHILADELPHIA UNDER

                            Parx Racing - Race #7 - Post: 3:37pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 73

                            Rating:

                            #3 OUR FLIRTATION (ML=5/2)
                            #13 SMARTY CAT (ML=7/2)
                            #4 LADY LUCY LU (ML=4/1)

OUR FLIRTATION - Filly shipped to this track and won; now goes for back-to-back wins. 'Horse-for-the-course' is a classic handicapping angle. Since this filly has won over this turf course it may give her an edge. This trainer is 'stretching-out' this horse. Making the move to 1 mile for the 1st time, and Ness has had some great success doing that. The morning line odds on this filly are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of trainer Ness. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. SMARTY CAT - This filly should give a strong account of herself in today's race. LADY LUCY LU - Using this jock/handler combination is a good move. This horse brings in a lot of dough per race. Tops in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #15 LIGHT UP NIGHT (ML=2/1), #5 LOST SCROLL (ML=9/2), #2 RAGAZZA CARINA (ML=5/1),

LIGHT UP NIGHT - Aug 6th is the last time we've seen this filly around. Have to be a little bit leery. LOST SCROLL - Won't be easy for this racer to beat this bunch off of that last speed figure. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put her on the vulnerable contenders list. This pony will probably bounce off of the last strong outing. RAGAZZA CARINA - When checking today's class rating, she will have to record a much better speed fig than last time around the track to vie in this turf route.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - OUR FLIRTATION - Racing on the turf in a route makes this horse extremely dangerous today. Ness has an excellent win percentage with horses at today's distance/surface.

                              # 7 SMOLTZ 9/2
My selection in this event is LEO. Could provide positive gains based on very good recent speed figures with an average of 82. Could best this group of horses based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 89 - of his last effort. He has quite good class ratings, averaging 92, and has to be given a shot for this event. KEYED ON TOP - Has to be used in the exotic offerings. With a solid 88 speed fig last time out, will clearly be a factor in this contest. SMOLTZ - Will most likely come out strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved sharply to the lead recently. In fine fettle, and coming back in next to no time again today.
